This video is a test to see how the Benelli M2 20 Gauge patterns. I had 3 boxes of shells to use for this test and the results were very surprising.

We have a Caldwell lead sled that we use for sighting in our rifles and slug guns and it works well for doing pattern tests on our waterfowl guns as well. Removes the human error of flinching, etc.

The velocity difference will literally be a inch or three when it actually comes down to lead difference. That doesn't throw your shot off.

Boss #4s and don’t look back! Love them things so much. 20 and 12 absolutely punishes big late season honkers here in Missouri but still great pellet counts for dense patterns on ducks as well.

Every Benelli I've patterned has worked really good with Hevi shot and Kent ammunition
    Kent 2.0 faststeel runs 1550 FPS in 7/8th 20 gauge.. or 1350fps in 1.18th oz 20 gauge.
I run Hevi metel bb for geese. Hevi steel #4 for ducks and Kent fast steel 2.0
    #2shot for all around.

In general in my 20 gauge experience I like a really tight pattern and then It’s all on me to hit my shots, if you aren’t a good enough shot to hit tight pattern shots rather then using a wide pattern and wounding birds you should be shooting a 12 gauge

#3’s are my go to for ducks. It’s a little bit smaller than a number two but still has the knockdown power with more pellets. I use Federal blue box. I don’t recommend using anything under a number two for geese.

I’m on my 3rd season with that gun and I love Boss #5s. I’ve shot ducks, pheasant, geese all with that load. I also swapped out to Carlson cremator chokes and use the ER 90% of the time. I would swap out the recoil pad to a limb-saver. The factory one is not durable and I baby my stuff, I also found that I was not mounting the gun consistent and shot so much better when I swapped to a standard cut pad.

  • @kevintaylor1659
    @kevintaylor1659 3 роки тому +1

You either had wind or your gun is throwing the pattern a little right. With 2 of the loads the center of the pattern was right. I would pattern with a good rest so you can be sure it isn't you throwing the shot or maybe it is the gun/choke. If you want to extend your range then think about a choke that allows you to do that. Most folks go to a 20 with the intention of keeping shots in decoying range but with some of the loads/chokes out there now you can even extend out with a 20. Just depends on your pocketbook.

Great video!!! I like using two Light Modified chokes in my Beretta o:u 20ga when duck/goose hunting with 3” #2 steel. The pattern is more consistent out of my gun. Whereas if I put in modified chokes, the #2 steel has a worse pattern at 40 yds. Man I still remember my last waterfowl hunt using lead #4’s on ducks and #3 on geese. That was in 1990, that last season for lead shot.

Good trial run on the pattern board out of your M2. To my surprise, the Hevi-Hammer did very well out of the gun and choke combo. I would attribute this to the quality of the steel shot being used, the smaller #3 pellet size, and the slower velocity. The 15% of bismuth in that load is a total gimmick. Out of the entire shell there were maybe 15 to 20 #3 Bismuth pellets I could count on camera (which is at or less than 15% of the payload weight/count), so those pellets are doing absolutely nothing for you but driving the cost of the load up.
I would say that if you want to improve your patterns with the #2 pellet Federal blue box load, I would go to a IC or light mod choke. The erratic nature of the pattern is indicative of bridging due to too tight of a choke being used and the pellets being forced into each other (which causes disrupted flight as steel/iron shot is not malleable like other shot types and it will literally ricochet off each other), and this is easy to do with #2's in a 20 bore being that the shot size is a bit large for the bore. #3's and #4's in steel shot will do better in the Modified choke tube, at the cost of effective range. I would also re-test at some point with the lighter constriction chokes at 30 yards so you have a more full picture of how that shot charge is spreading over distance.
To be honest, if you want 40 yards with your 20ga, you'll need to go to a denser shot material (and not a mixed material shot load either) such as bismuth, ITX, or Tungsten-Iron. But, if all of your shots are going to be at 30 and less as you say in the video, play with your Federal Blue Box load using lesser constriction chokes when using the #2 pellet and you should improve your patterns and results on birds.

I do think the "pattern spread" isn't as much personal preference as it is game being chased. Commonly its looked at size of game and "hardiness" of the game being chased. For like grouse/woodcock a "less condensed spread" is so called better because it takes less pellets to kill the bird. vs Ducks/Geese it commonly thought a more condensed spread is better because you will get more pellets on those birds. Just what I have gather over the years. I could definitely be wrong though.

I think you should try number 4 or 5 bismuth in 1, 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 Oz loads. You’ll get much more out of your 20 that way. 7/8 Oz of steel shot ain’t doing you or the 20 gauge any favors.

I bought a new M2 20 ga earlier this year. Like it. Really like 20 my montefeltro as well. As far as shell comparison I’d really like to see your federal 1550 compared to say the Boss at 1350 FPS. Patterning, chronographing and penetration in ballistics gelatin say at 40 yards. Ive heard so many mixed reviews on bismuth loads. I’ve found with my M2 12 I use my II notch choke for really tight patterns on steel.
