Shane Mc Gowan, who wrote this song, was buried yesterday. Shane was an Irish national treasure, and this song has now gone to No 1 in the charts . It went to No 2 before but not to no.1 until he passed during the week. Thousands lined the streets of Dublin as his funeral cortege passed, and his funeral mass was a celebration of his life, with many friends from the music world, performing his songs. We even had dancing in the church. Shane had a beautiful soul and he gave most of his money to charity as he didn't attach much importance to money. He also loved people and didn't seek out the company of celebrities. To Shane, everyone, rich or poor, was the same. RIP Shane, and thank you for leaving us such a wonderful legacy. .
Grown men tear up when this is played, and it's sung loud and proud all over the English-speaking world...and other countries too. Like a rose in a desert it needs to be nurtured, or it dies of thirst.
