Young man I’m so pleased to watch your hard work, I have one like yours to install and I’ve been putting it off. Thanks I’m ready to go now. God bless you. (Old guy from Arkansas)🇺🇸
I am very pleased you joined Cargo Trailer Campers Facebook group. You are helping many people in our group. You are a very talented young man. God bless you.
Yeah, I've been researching for my own purchase. Another builder split door open and learned it was already rotting on bottom aa door is framed with wood and not treated in any way. Wood or skin to trim. Glad I learned this before I ordered my trailer. Jeesh.. I'm thinking build my own, use skin and try to avoid all the frustrations... Kudos on getting it done!
Great video!!! Those handles are pain in the you know what to install on a hallow door. I went with a 21/32 completely rebuilt the door. Easy, faster and now you can hang tools on it with easy. .
Oh my gosh I’ve had days like that. But perseverance usually ends up being rewarding thank you so much for your video. I don’t think I’m gonna install my door latch now. Lol maybe I will.
This is what I like about you young kids can do no intimidation yours is the best install latch vid ! Ive got mine and gonna study and replicate your method
Nice build.. I came here for the RV door latch, ended up watching a bunch or your trailer build. I admire your courage drilling that first hole for the latch.👍🏻
Good job young man. This video was helpful. I now know that I won't have the time (or patience) and will start with a slide door latch until I can pay an RV place to do it for me. Thanks.
I just converted a cargo trailer to a camper. Of all the tasks, including insulation , wiring, plumbing, kitchen, etc. etc.......the door latch took the most time and labor.
Yes! I'm sure I could do it a little bit quicker the next time around but definitely caught me off guard. Funny, I assumed it would take 2 hours, which quickly turned into 2 days.
Well done Joel, I am embarking on the same project "when it gets warmer" on a side door. Sometimes a seemingly small job takes all the time. My trailer is one inch to tall for the garage door, so in the driveway it must be.
I had the same problem lol so I had to beg a relative to let me use their shop! Thanks for watching. Good luck with the task. In hind sight it wasn't that bad, just gotta take your time! Cheers
I’m about to install the exact same latch set up you installed on a door I built. Pretty lousy that they don’t give you any instructions. I think by watching your struggles I can do it as well. Fingers crossed! Thank you.
Absolutely. I've definitely thought about making a little instruction booklet for these little things that become headaches. In hindsight it wasn't too bad, and I know if I were to install one again, I would be faster. Thanks for watching, good luck with your install!
I was thinking about the replacing. It looks lots of work and needs details. Thanks for showing. But it makes me worry not wearing eye protection when using power tools.
Thank you! I think replacing an existing latch will be easier than installing one from scratch. I try my best to always wear eye protection while using power tools! Sometimes I forget.
I removed my inside paneling and bar latch also removed the inside right panel because i aminsulating and installing windows as well (this is for my side door) also with the paneling removed i will install window in the side door as well
First of all, you did good. The most important thing is that it's functioning how it's supposed to and that it's securely attached. With that said, I think it would have been better to take the inside part of the door apart...separate it completely from the outside and frame. Then you would have seen that the door is hollow and you could have installed a 2x4 or whatever was needed to to give the latch a really strong place to mount through. It also would have given you the opportunity to insulate the door and work on the aluminum trim piece either in a vice or on your workbench. Still, it came out nice and does what it's supposed to do. Good work!
Yes, I started trying to take the door apart but the way it is built, I would have had to dismantle the entire thing... Which I did not feel confident enough to get back together. I found a different way to insulate the door. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for posting this. Your build is top notch! I have a 5x8 and a Subaru Outback and I’m trying to decide between building out one of those or buying a van. I got to this video after watching your full build time-lapse. The latch portion of that vid almost gave me a seizure.
Probably the best video I've seen on this process. Question though, in every video I've watched EVERYONE hogs out the door and aluminum trim on the latch side of the door trying to get the latch mechanism to "tuck" (there're some REAL "shoulda -left-it-to-someone-who-knows-how-to-use-tools vids out there). Why not remove the aluminum door trim and work cleanly?
Thank you! The reason I left the trim on mine is that it was attached to the outter trim and frame. If I wanted to take the trim off, I would of had to dismantle the entire door. I agree, a clean work surface would've been ideal.
No doubt it would be a hassle. I haven't taken mine apart yet, but I had to replace the wood core on an RV door once, the whole thing came apart with screws. I'll put my hands where my mouth is in a bit and let you know how the idea worked for me.
Cargo trailer doors are infuriating, some have a full steel frame, others have a partial steel frame and what is worse you usually cannot take the aluminum trim off w/o investing a day. Believe it or not…this install was easier than most because he chose to avoid any a steel framing. Great work i must say.
That was a very nice meticulous install! All your hard work paid off, it looks great! I thought about doing this to my cargo trailer but I think I’m gonna pass, I don’t think I have the patience! 🤣 LOL
Thank you, In hind sigh it wasn't really that bad haha. Definitely worth the hassle! If I were to do it again, I think I'd be a lot quicker. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed.
Geesgh! WHAT A PAIN THE GRASS! I'm dreading having to do my 1" thick cargo trailer door! And I can't even find one for a 1" door! It seems they're ALL for the standard 1-1/2" ( I guess) thick RV doors. At least on Amazon anyway. Any tips u can pass on from your painstakingly tedious installation? I wouldn't have as much patience as you!
This all looks so great Joel! I notice that it looks quite bright and sunny in Ontario at the time of filming, where are you at with the build at this current moment?
Yup. I've been there, done that. But it Wasn't quite that difficult. The doors on these cargo trailers are absolute junk. Great video. I have subscribed
It definitely varies from latch to latch. I didn't start with a set dimension because I wanted it to fit. It's not that bad once you start! Take your time, measure 30x and cut once :) good luck!
Any trailer manufacturer or RV service center might do it for you, but won't be cheap. It's honestly not that difficult, just take your time, measure twice, cut once!;
I'm curious. couldn't you have just taken the door panel off to access the interior of the door and make it easier to cut the hole and insert the latching mechanism?
I could have but to get the door panel off I would have had to take the entire door off the trailer. It was built funny from factory. Thanks for watching
Yes this is very important! I should have mentioned this in the video. I will be using a puck lock on the latch to keep the bar in the "open" position.
Hey I watched this thinking this guy is where I was 2 years ago planning on installing the same latch . Well done, I didn't do mine though , it's still in the box! Not all cargo trailer doors are made the same so I went to plan B . I do want to say though that someone can now latch you in as it is ! Watch this video and you will see how it is prevented ua-cam.com/video/Hw-9VlzWcb0/v-deo.html I chose to install this prevention and latch from the inside . Much better for my Application.

Thank you! Glad I've found such an amazing group to share my experiences. Happy holidays!
I just bought a handle just like this and will be installing it on my wife's grooming trailer...thanks for the video
Good luck with the install! Thanks for watching
Man I am about to tackle this tomorrow old video but still the best one on UA-cam
Thanks for watching!
I admire your patience and persistence! I would have given up. Excellent job! You should be proud of yourself!
Thank you for the kind words 🙂
Good job! I did the same on my cargo trailer, I can sympathize! It's like building a ship in a bottle!
Thank you!

Good job!!!! I’m putting one in a door I’m making and you have helped immensely!!!!
Glad you found the video helpful! Good luck with your build
@@JoelTremblayCA thank you ❤️

I did it. It took me all day and mine too is a little crooked. It does work though!

Thank you! Good luck with your install.
Thanks for doing this! It lets me know that I’m now NOT going to bother. Jeez that’s a lot of work, but you did a phenomenal clean job!!!
In hind sight it's not too bad, if I were to do it again, it would be much quicker but that's just the process of learning! Thanks for watching.
Nice build.. I came here for the RV door latch, ended up watching a bunch or your trailer build. I admire your courage drilling that first hole for the latch.👍🏻

Great video. I've also had many of those disks break on me. I found they depend greatly upon the quality, so get the expensive ones, so much better!
Hey. Go to harbor freight and get a $10 angel grinder with cutting wheels. Save hours on your build. Good job though.
Thanks for watching!

I bought one of these and I hated installing it. Absolute bastard of a thing
Stellar job done here! Your attention to detail and walking through the installation is very helpful for me as I adapt my trailer.
Thank you! Glad you've found the video helpful.
Thanks man...I appreciate your video - it will be helpful when I do mine
Thanks for watching, good luck!
Thank you for this video! My brand new trailer handle was installed wrong and i have to correct it. I don't know anything‼️

Good job. It appears that the door is 1" thick... same as mine. There isn't much on the internet to see which latch is best or how to install them.
Which is why I decided to record me installing this one haha!

Thank you! Haha yes the latch was very fussy. Took a lot of time monkeying around, trying to get it to fit. Good luck with your build.
If you need a basic template, take the foam gasket off and use that

About 10 hours, taking my sweet sweet time. Second time now I could do it in a few hours no problem.

A multi-tool would be ideal for cutting out where you used a Dremel. If you are like me, you will wonder how you ever did without one.
Yeah I got to borrow one once and it was a game changer! Wish I had thought of it when I was doing this. Thanks for watching and commenting!
What were the dimensions of the hole you ended up cutting? I am terrified to do this to my trailer door. I just dont want to screw up
It definitely varies from latch to latch. I didn't start with a set dimension because I wanted it to fit. It's not that bad once you start! Take your time, measure 30x and cut once :) good luck!
I want to add windows and a RV door lock to my trailer too but don't trust myself install them properly, any advice on who I should contact for help?
Any trailer manufacturer or RV service center might do it for you, but won't be cheap. It's honestly not that difficult, just take your time, measure twice, cut once!;
I'm curious. couldn't you have just taken the door panel off to access the interior of the door and make it easier to cut the hole and insert the latching mechanism?

How has the latch held up with use?
Still does what it needs to do! No problems whatsoever.
THE FACTORY's installation broke my door. 2 weeks later i am still working to fix it‼️
Eeeeek that's terrible. Think they would cover it under warranty?
Did you insulate the door
I did but in a different way you might think. Video link here: ua-cam.com/video/bVjwWibhZPg/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!
I'm no expert, but I'd think a router would've done the latch groove better than a dremel.
Yeah you're probably right! I don't have much experience with a router that's why I chose a Dremel haha. Thanks for watching.
Make sure you can lock the bar lock in the open position so someone can't lock it on you while you are inside.
