    The key thing to remember about these trailers are they are only rated to 750 pounds of cargo on the highway and 500 pounds off-road. So as you start adding structure you quickly loose cargo capacity. Be aware, if you cut out the back panel you are seriously compromising the structural integrity of the side walls. I have the same trailer and the previous owner cut out the rear wall. The joints at the bottom rear corners of the side walls began to break due to the walls flexing in and outward. You can get a CJ tailgate and it should fit in the space the rear wall occupied, but make sure you incorporate something like a removable bar that runs from the top left/right corners of the sidewalls so they can’t flex. That bar could pin in so you can remove it for loading/unloading. You should also add a permanent crossmember or bracing at the bottom. If you can work in aluminum, you could solve the problem by “roofing” the trailer bed, giving you the strength to stop the side from flexing/bowing out and allowing you to replace the rear wall with a tailgate.

    • @JoelTremblayCA
      @JoelTremblayCA День тому

      @@sfcmmacro absolutely good things to remember. Any cutting / fab work I do will definitely be reinforced because of this reason. Simply put this trailer is just a large sheet metal tub! I like the idea of a removable brace. Thanks for your input!

    Our garden trailer was severely damaged after leading to an in-law. We had to collect it from the side of the road by manually lifting on another family-members trailer. After another team member had a depressive slump, I managed to unload it myself, and the experience was just as precarious and irresponsible as what you did raising this trailer upright. I managed to fix our trailer so it is mobile and usable again, but haven’t done any more repairs or improvements since. This video has inspired me to continue the repairs. The new axle and a set of very nice wheels that I had lying around are a bit too pretty compared to the rest of the trailer. Were it me I’d replace the leaf springs and rebuild the hitch. Remove any hooks etc that aren’t original. Build/install HD 3 surface fender. Remove that rear bumper abortion and rebuild the original frame structure but extend it out to mount tail lights on. Plug weld up all the holes in the tube and grind smooth. Best bet is to sand blast the entire trailer. Reuse that receiver hitch by insetting into the rebuild bumper structure. You’ll also need to fab up something on the back to keep the trailer level. Think ahead about what you’ll use this for. Replace the hubs/wheels with ones that match the tow vehicle lug pattern. This way you can use the tow vehicles spare on the trailer instead of carrying one on the trailer. They take up a lot of space. One of those HD trailer tongue storage boxes is the way to go up front. Might also consider mounting a RotoPak gas can to the front of the box. Doesn’t have to be huge…..3 gal is a decent backup for the tow vehicles. Mount a full size shovel along one side and a full size axe in the other. If you want to carry water consider an RV tank you can mount underneath the trailer. I’ve owned/built a couple of these for Rubicon wheeling.

    This is a cool trailer! I recently pulled a homemade truck bed trailer home from the junk yard it was a 1973-1979 Ford f250 frame and 8ft bed. Was really rusty so I pulled the bed and put a 90s Ford 8ft bed on it. Still not perfect but a good project and a work in progress. My next project on it is the oil wheel seal for the axle hub. But all in all I'm into for about $300 so it's not to bad at all.

    Good call with the heater on the outside of the tent. Much safer not burning the O2 that's inside the tent. Use that for the people instead of the heater.

    Great Job getting most of the rust-off before u painted the trailer bottom. I woulda weld-up some of the holes on the bottom first. parts where u couldn't used the grinder.

      @@billyhaddock5540 surprisingly there's no holes on the bottom besides the factory ones and the drainage holes. When I tackle the body, I'll be doing my best to fill in any left over holes. Thanks for watching
