can you please do Barry Sanders if you havent already? Your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorite sports channels. I love that you did Lev Bell!
LeVeon Bell is the perfect example of "the grass isnt always greener on the other side". He had the ideal setup in Pittsburgh: a player-first coach, an adoring fanbase that worshiped the ground he walked on, and an o-line that had more pro bowlers than Bell had healthy seasons. He was offered 14M/yr which is an insane contract even today, and he was on a roster that was competing for super bowls for the entirety of that contract. He had EVERYTHING he could have asked for......but he thought he could get it all and more somewhere or somehow else. And we all saw what happened as a result
Simple answer: He left Pittsburgh. This is coming from a Browns fan. Bell and Brown went from top-tier to jokes the second they left. I HATE Pittsburgh, but I respect them 100%. They're a threat every freaking year.
I'm a die hard Steeler fan. I hate the Browns more than anyone else in our division. But I respect you. And you're 100% correct. Usually when a Steeler leaves Pittsburgh, usually for money, they tend to fade into obscurity and mediocrity.
The actual answer is choosing to sit out the year before leaving. That was always going to doom him, and I said it even at the time that he would never be the same.
Didn't Brown do pretty decent for a while at first? I definitely feel like Brown's problem was more that he wasn't mentally the same ever since he got clocked in the head facing the Bengals. I'd agree with you on Bell though, but I think a lot of that has to do with missing a year and joining with the Jets when Gase was the HC. He seemed less of a power back and more of a shifty and elusive style runner. I think that's probably a good part of what made him as effective as a receiving back as well.
@@IStillJustLikeCats Brown was always a loose cannon. It mostly got overlooked because he was in the MAC. That hit only exacerbated what was already there.
Adam Gase's actual comment about Bell was that his offense didn't need a feature back. Seriously? Why would a coach deliberately not try to use a player? If the offensive line sucks, like the Jets did, why not throw to him either out of the backfield or out of the slot? Incompetence reigned supreme with the Jets.
This happens a lot with coaches and just not football it happens in soccer, too. I don't understand how you can't tailor your system. And if you can't, you don't deserve to be a coach. But these guys think their God. There is an Italian coach who said. "My job is to be a tailor and work with what I have to make the best suit. I can't make a slim suit for a heavy man and expect it to look good."
@@justincovert6943 In support of your comment, Charlie Weis discussed the 2019 Jets and their misuse of talent. He said the Jets OC's primary job is to get Le'Veon Bell 15-20 touches per game. But Adam Gase knew better (LOL).
You made me realize that Bell fucked it up for all RB's, He sat out , Connor came in and did great, proved that RB's are the easiest to replace. Last season spotlighted that RB's had trouble getting paid by their team, this off season many had to go to different teams to get their bag.
Him and Todd Gurley. That's why I feel bad for Pacheco in KC. Watching all his teammates get a bag. By the time it's his turn, those tires will be bald.
Running backs that win the heisman are usually the only heisman winners that do well in the nfl. That should say all we need to know. Rb’s are not only disposable and replaceable, but they also have very short careers.
There’s a guy named Ladanian Tomlinson. He ran for over a 1,000 and caught 100 receptions. This was in the early 2000’s. Bell was NOT the first. You can even go to the 90’s and 80’s with guys like Dave Megget and Roger Craig.
I think Bell realized the physical toll playing was putting on his body and knew he didn't have much left. He wanted a big pay day. The RB position falls apart really quick and the athlete knows the end is near way ahead of the team and fans.
I fully agree. He got a fully guaranteed 35 million from the jets. I think we all knew that he was about done once he left Pittsburgh. But great job on him getting that payday when a lot of his contemporaries don't get the chance.
@@Deandrebeck13 He wasn't done if he had stayed in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh was not going to sign him to a 5 year deal, play him one year, and then cut him to save the guaranteed. He left $20MM on the table, and a chance at another 3-4 years of success. The Pittsburgh deal had $10MM guaranteed (signing bonus), and the first two years were for $33MM. There is $43MM right there. which is more than he got from the Jets.
@@bauerj3398It’s certainly a gamble, if he signed the contract with Steelers and got career ending injury like Ryan Shazier in his first year then the Jets contract is better. But if it is not then Steelers contract is better. Considering the toll that running back takes and how Steelers utilize him, I wouldn’t mind take short term option than the long term one.
While a lot of people say him leaving the Steelers, I argue it didn’t help that Gase was an idiot that just spammed HB dive and expected him to make that work. Like you have a guy that’s been amazing weaving in between the tackles and somehow the only move you can try is a run up the guy.
That's part of it though. He made a decision into the unknown and paid for it while he knew what he had with the steelers. He's the writer of his own story and a pretty amateur writer considering how it turned out. He made horrible decisions. Blaming gase though is cute . Do you always blame others for your bad decisions?

The vast majority of top end players get the entirety of their contract, the 70 mil was the way to go. Added in Bell's style of running plus the residuals for being a Steelers legend in a city that lives for football. This is the definition of penny wise, pound foolish.
hoderharris: no, it didn't. He was offered $10MM guaranteed signing bonus from Pittsburgh, and the first two years were for $33MM, and Pittsburgh never cut anybody one year into a long-term. That is $43MM in two years, which is more than $35, and that would only continue to grow since years #3 and #4 exceeded the Jets offer.
That Steeler O-line fit Bell's style perfectly. That hesitation move only works when the OL can hold their blocks. He should have understood that and stayed where he was. I don't blame him for holding out for a bigger guarantee, but the Steelers had the leverage there and he should have just kept doing what he was, holding out for the preseason, keep his legs fresh, and then showing up.

I also broke my neck playing football and was paralyzed from the neck down like Shazzer. I was only 14 and in 9th grade. I lost all chances at being a professional baseball player. When you're that good of an athlete and to lose your ability to walk, run, play sports its devastating, and sent me into severe clinical depression. Even though I recovered better than most ever thought possible. I don't know of or have heard of any other former athlete who sustained the magnitude of injury I had, C4-C5 and can snow ski down double backs unassisted. golf, play tennis etc, still with major weakness in my upper extremities. What was devastating for me is that I never fully recovered and could not compete against able-bodied athletes. Yet I don't need a wheelchair, so para-Olympics was out. because my upper body was to weak. Yet here I was accomplishing physical feats unheard of, but no way to show my athletic ability to anyone because there are nSo competitions for an athlete like myself. My depression hit me hard. I have tremendous empathy for any athlete that suffers a career ending injury. I have people ask me how did I know I could have played professional baseball? Well you just know.
It’s like a catch 22 for running backs man... You don’t want to pay them a lot because they are easily replaced and don’t usually have long careers but at the same time, they kinda deserve the pay, due to the work load/beatings that their bodies take also the shorter career. They don’t have as much time to make money as other skill positions. Idk if it was injuries, him sitting out or what but it really just seems like ignorance and greed to me. Another great video!
Finally everyone sees that it isn't the running backs or even the qbs that make them as good as they are. It's the O-line & the coaching/ play design. Football is the true team sport.
He did it to himself and the fact that all RBs especially one with his unique style requires an amazing O-Line which the Steelers were top 1-3 in the league with that crew.
I was going to write the same thing. He could ONLY have that patient style because the offensive line was incredible and bought so much time. Add that they had great options at wideout AND in the slot... yeah he was a product of the environment. Of course he was talented but that only shone as a result of the attention dedicated to the other skill players. Hell, they were somehow a better team with Deangelo Williams who was over the hill yet effective and he wasn't as skilled as Bell.
He was robbed by the franchise tag. Running backs are screwed because their careers are so short that they don't get a chance to negotiate big contracts later in their careers, and the franchise tag limits their salaries when they are producing the most.

The problem wasn't just "he left Pittsburgh," the bigger issue is where he went afterwards - the *JETS.* If you're hoping to find success outside of the team that drafted you, the last place you want to sign is New Jersey. That's a disfunctional organization at nearly any point, but going there during the Adam Gase era? That's just asking for failure.
I remember like yesterday. Im a Pit fan myself and just knew we were drafting Eddie Lacy as most everyone else thought so too. A lot of ppl forget that. 2013 most said it was a mistake taking Bell over Lacy, then 2014 came, Bell became elite while Lacy couldn't stay in shape. It really makes u appreciate talent evaluators that see things everyone else doesn't.
That MNF game sometime in '13-14 where he basically had more offense than everyone else on the field combined. The guy was an absolute beast at his peak.
Bell falling for the Adam Gase ruse showed just how bad his judgement was regarding his search for guaranteed money. Sam Darnold is only now having a shot to recover from the Gase debacle.
Running backs have a short shelf life. Bell couldn't get along with anyone. He made a few million and got a Super Bowl ring. More than most. Thanks again Lauren.
13:30: This is spot on. Football is a TEAM game. Several coaches have preached the mantra " There is no "I" in team". He decided to leave his teammates in a trash dumpster and they had every right to be angry and upset.
The Steelers 3 Bs of Bell, Ben, & Brown will not be remembered for never playing in a Super Bowl together but rather for (cue the music)… Days of Our Steelers
As a die hard Jets fan I was super excited when we signed him I was like finally we have a superstar running back. Adam Gase was the reason for his downfall, bad lineman and Darnold wasn’t the answer.

Elite line play IS AFC north football. During college pro days, Pittsburgh’s O line coach Pat Meyer is *the* coach that works out the college players for all the NFL coaches to see. He’s the coach picked by all the other coaches to evaluate the future of the league. In hindsight, both Bell’s and Connor’s success in Pittsburgh was, in a very big way, due to that offensive line.
Yep. LeVeon was the first back to be a threat as a pass catcher. Marshall Faulk, Tomlinson, Walker, Emmitt, Payton, Craig, Martin, Barber, Dunn all learned from watching Bell’s tape.
We think of some of these pros like they’re adults but often they are in early or mid 20s and wealthy and famous and everyone asking them for stuff, it can’t be easy to know what to do. Bell seems like a decent guy who just didn’t have the life experience to know it’s not always about chasing every last dollar.
That oline and Ds needing to to respect the pass with big ben and brown allowed his unique hesitation and success. Most teams can't give an rb that kind of time to wait for a gap.
I’m all for players getting their proper share. And he may have gotten it. But it’s hard not to wonder what might have been. When he was at his peak, was the most interesting back in the league.I think he was the best back for a couple years.
The editor made a big goof! At 0:28 she said eastern Michigan and then showed Western Michigan’s logo. As a proud WMU alumni we would have been proud to have Levon bell as a Bronco… but not an Eagle!
I remember for years, I wanted to draft Bell 1.01 in my fantasy drafts. Then finally 2017 rolls around and I get the 1.02. I just started dating this girl that I really liked and one day we were in a really good mood and said let's go watch a movie and extend our date. I left the theater that day with like 15 missed texts from one of my leaguemates because I had the 1.02 and Gurley went 1st overall while I auto drafted Bell during the Jet ski year lmao. My only solace was that I paid a lot of attention to rookies that year and snagged up James Conner. He saved my season but my year could have been so much better because I was not planning on touching Bell with a 15 foot pole that year.

What a joke! He thought the grass was greener on the other side and wanted a bag of money 💰! No one ever accused him of being smart…!
Finally everyone sees that it isn't the running backs or even the qbs that make them as good as they are. It's the O-line & the coaching/ play design. Football is the true team sport.
When talking about RB-as-receiver NFL pioneers, you gotta give Niners legend Roger Craig a shout-out.
very well researched and well done! Didn't know much about Bell and feel like I learned a lot more
Video starts at 13:00
You are absolutely killing it in the UA-cam Sports documentary space!
I just met "BELL" last night in Las Vegas . Very cool and a nice guy. Took a picture with me.
His own ego did him in. Tale as old as time
No. He still succeeded. And the team should have gotten him what he wanted
Incorrect but nice try
Either his ego or the wrong person in his ear telling him he was doing the smart thing. And yes a tale as old as time.
@@ou8428 Yeah O-Lines can make or break an RB unless they are a specimen, AP. Sanders, CMC etc..
5:21 Mary Jane charges...🤣🤣🤣
He was robbed by the franchise tag. Running backs are screwed because their careers are so short that they don't get a chance to negotiate big contracts later in their careers, and the franchise tag limits their salaries when they are producing the most.
he 100% did it himself.
I don't feel sorry for guys making 10 million a year to play a game.
@@BMXAuthority so just ignore everything it takes to get to that level because a tiny percentage of them actually earn a lot? Don't do that dude. Feels like jealousy because you don't like your job. You know it's not just a game.
@@BMXAuthoritydude you sound like a hater!!! People quite literally lose their lives behind that “game.” Such an intellectually dishonest take from you..
don’t be a running back dummy
My favorite sports UA-camr 💚💚💚
Great video🔥💥
Another FIRE 🔥 project. Thank you ma’am
Hey great video. You know your shit. Keep pumpin em out!
for how many problems this dude had, he had a sick running style. No one has ever been as patient as him
Another great video Lauren
The problem wasn't just "he left Pittsburgh," the bigger issue is where he went afterwards - the *JETS.*
If you're hoping to find success outside of the team that drafted you, the last place you want to sign is New Jersey. That's a disfunctional organization at nearly any point, but going there during the Adam Gase era?
That's just asking for failure.
6:55 you had guys like Thurman Thomas and Marshal Faulk too. They were pretty good. Like MVP good.
Him and TODD GURLEY they really messed it up for all the RB from the getting the bag💰💰
Bell falling for the Adam Gase ruse showed just how bad his judgement was regarding his search for guaranteed money. Sam Darnold is only now having a shot to recover from the Gase debacle.
And you’d think they’d give Sam a pass, knowing Adam Gase was his coach and nobody succeeds with the Jets.
He was so good. Patient runner, great route runner. Amazing hands and good power. He should have stayed in Pittsburgh.
Running backs have a short shelf life. Bell couldn't get along with anyone. He made a few million and got a Super Bowl ring. More than most.
Thanks again Lauren.
Bell did it to himself, by a mixture of greed and thinking he did it all by himself.
Great analysis and time line. Far better than the highly paid analysts on networks.
Your vids are pure 🔥
This was a great summary of his career just became a fan ❤❤❤
I grabbed Leveon with the first pick in fantasy his first year on the jets and I regretted it heavily
I love the research and enthusiasm. Great video. The vocal fry makes me want to rip my ears off though.
13:30: This is spot on. Football is a TEAM game. Several coaches have preached the mantra " There is no "I" in team". He decided to leave his teammates in a trash dumpster and they had every right to be angry and upset.
It’s all on him! No matter what you say
The downfall of Big Ben, AB, and Le’veon needs to be studied
It’s crazy to think that trio never won a Super Bowl together!
I mean, Ben got old. Nothing to study there
@@SheGotSports tough when a certain Massachusetts based team existed in their conference 💀
Big ben Rapistburger just retired. That's all
The 3 Killer Bees
The Steelers 3 Bs of Bell, Ben, & Brown will not be remembered for never playing in a Super Bowl together but rather for (cue the music)…
Days of Our Steelers
But I thought he had the hall of fame waiting! He said so in his rap albums.
As a die hard Jets fan I was super excited when we signed him I was like finally we have a superstar running back. Adam Gase was the reason for his downfall, bad lineman and Darnold wasn’t the answer.
And who is? Aaron Rodgers? 😂
On a side note that hit by the Bengals was dirty as hell
W video keep it up
0:28 you say "Eastern Michigan" and show the Western Michigan University logo. You can tell the difference because Western has a big "W" in their logo, Eastern does not.
Looking back at that hit on bell that caused his injury, that person definitely did it on purpose. Went straight for his knee with his shoulder.
He was a phenomenal running back when he was "hungry."
He gets millions...AAAANNNND MIIIIIOILLINS of $$, & he became a professional diva.
"Money changes you..." ~Conor McNuggets
Money doesn't change people, it just shows who they really are, if I was an azzhole when I was broke, I'm going to be an even bigger one if I get rich 😂😂
@@ericjones6651 You're 50% correct.
Growing up, I knew good, fairly poor people who made it BIG in investing, & became complete d!ck-bagels when they got stupid rich.
I am also 50% correct...
Can you do a video on the DOWNFALL of MARCUS PETERS or can you do a video on the DOWNFALL of MACOLM BUTLER
money ruins the best of us
Did he kick your puppy or something?
This series is so fucn goood
Days of our Steelers and urinating tree brought me to your video.
Plz never call it Mary Jane ever again. It's pronounced Mara-Jew-wanna. Btw, keep up the good work, the vids are a proper good time.
Going to the Jets ruined Bells career. Anyone whos remotely good come to NYJ, they die.
The raiders are far worse than the jets
Yep. LeVeon was the first back to be a threat as a pass catcher. Marshall Faulk, Tomlinson, Walker, Emmitt, Payton, Craig, Martin, Barber, Dunn all learned from watching Bell’s tape.
I scooped up LeVeon in the 8th round of Fantasy Football his Rookie Year carried me to a championship!!!
We think of some of these pros like they’re adults but often they are in early or mid 20s and wealthy and famous and everyone asking them for stuff, it can’t be easy to know what to do. Bell seems like a decent guy who just didn’t have the life experience to know it’s not always about chasing every last dollar.
Hell yea my chick is back with a new vid. You really do have some of the best content!!! That’s real
That oline and Ds needing to to respect the pass with big ben and brown allowed his unique hesitation and success. Most teams can't give an rb that kind of time to wait for a gap.
All the retirees are sitting at home sweating hoping you don’t make a video about them next😂😂
I’m all for players getting their proper share. And he may have gotten it. But it’s hard not to wonder what might have been. When he was at his peak, was the most interesting back in the league.I think he was the best back for a couple years.
she acts like Bell was the first dual threat back, guess she forgot about Faulk, LT, Priest Holmes, Shaun Alexander, etc…
He definitely wasn’t but after him we really saw more RBS than ever emphasize catching the ball
Tonight, on Days of Our Steelers
