You are SO relatable!! I just recently rejoined WNS? after leaving a couple of years ago. I was so frustrated that no matter how much I studied, spoke, thought and tried to incorporate Spanish into my daily life… I just couldn’t get to the level all the effort I was putting in should have gotten me to, so I just started avoiding studying altogether and soon, not at all. I recently changed jobs and one of my coworkers is from Nicaragua and speaks hardly any English at all. Once she found out I knew even a little Spanish, we became friends and it really renewed my enthusiasm to learn. I rejoined WNS? last month and am determined to learn, but I have a new goal… that’s to learn HOW to learn. Ayda has been very helpful (along with another coworker who I discovered is from Cuba, but her English is perfect) and having people around to speak to (even in short, awkward sentences..) is helping me tremendously.

Yesterday I ordered my food at the drive through window. When they gave me my drink it was an "Arnold Palmer" but I ordered a "Bottled Water!" (Say it fast out loud.) That confusing transaction was all in English with only native English speakers! Thanks for the fun video. Love your content!

Something similar happened to me at a supermarket yesterday. I asked a shop assistant where the 'vegetales congelados' were and he took me to the 'helado'. I repeated myself and he still pointed to the ice cream until I used my translate app. I feel that it was a combination of my pronunciation/accent, I wasn't speaking loud enough (because I'm not very confident speaking Spanish), and the fact I was asking through a mascarilla. Also, I appreciate your honesty at the end about making a script. I think it is common for humans to compare themselves to others. Lately, I don't feel I'm making any progress with my speaking but your videos are encouraging and remind me that this stuff takes time and to keep going! Anyways, your videos are super helpful -- thanks to both of you :)

lol This reminds me of when I was trying to buy some super glue. I asked Maria what it was called here in Colombia. She says super glue. I get there and the guy has no idea what I was wanting. I eventually got it but it was a process.
Hang in there! I know it is not easy and there are a lot of ups and downs. Keep at it and take breaks if you need to. I took a break from Spanish for a while and then came back to it and it helped a lot.

Good for you for stepping up and "starring" in the videos, Cody. Agree with your point that oftentimes the miscommunication problem falls on the listener (or non-listener) rather than you the speaker. The vast majority of interactions in LATAM countries will be brief, transactional exchanges. I believe half the responsibility falls on the shopkeepers. After all they want your money. They should grease the wheel.
Also, you don't have videos this time of the actual exchange. So I couldn't see if you were pointing or gesturing. That's half the battle.
Looking for more moments of you in action.

Really well done! As a person who moved to Chile 3 years ago I have been in the same situation; when I order something, get the wrong thing, and feel certain it must be my Spanish. But..there are a lot of things that it can be..not just my Spanish. Knowing the grammar and pronunciation is just one part of it. Someone once told me that since I look so un-chilean..first they are afraid when they see me because they think I will speak English..then when I speak in spanish.theu are shocked so they are thrown off balance. Who knows..but we just have to keep trying. At least to get yummy pan!! For me "para llevar" was a game changer because I wanted a coffee to go and I would say "para ir" and that did not work!! Great concept. A few times I'll say something that I'm sure is correct in Spanish but they'll not understand me or think I'm foolish. This video helped me keep it up

My BF and I were in Barcelona years ago. It was hot, and I wanted a soda. We went into a Burger King (I thought this would be easy), and ordered a 1/2 and 1/2 Coke/Orange soda. I like to mix my flavors. There was a really nice young guy behind the counter who repeated my order back. 1 coke and 1 orange soda. I said no, I wanted one cup with 1/2 coke and 1/2 orange. He said OK (this was all Spanish mind you), and then repeated back my order.... 1 cup with 1/2 coke and 1 cup with 1/2 orange. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ At this point, he got the manager who seemed to understand what I wanted but said he can't do that? I thought 🤯!!! How simple is it to hold the cup under the coke then orange until full. We were all getting a bit frustrated so I asked my BF standing behind me to help. He's Mexican and of course, speaks perfect Spanish. I finally got my soda... a full cup of coke only.... As we walked outside, I was frustrated, angry, confused, and upset that things didn't go well. My BF said you're on your own speaking Spanish (after three days of helping me....). So I asked him what the problem was. Then I found out what Cody was saying here. It wasn't me or my Spanish. That was all correct in what I said and the way I asked for it. It's just that they (in Spain) just couldn't understand why anyone would want to mix flavors so assumed that's not what I wanted. So in the end, it wasn't a language issue, but a cultural one. ..... A story for all you non-native speakers... just have to give it a laugh, learn and try again.

Wow Cody your Spanish has really improved! I remember watching a video years ago when you were trying to ask people questions in Spanish and struggling quite a bit, and now here you are chatting away and ordering without any problems. Aw I'm so happy to see this, I'm sure you are so happy to finally feel confident when talking. You certainly look it!

Hola Cody! I really appreciated this video. I also get frustrated when Spanish speakers do not understand me and I am hard on myself because of this. I have noticed that it is the listener a lot though and sometimes one person will understand me completely and other times another will not. However, you are right. We do the same in English. Thank you for that and I hope to see more videos like this one. Also! I agree that having a script makes it easier to learn as well and being prepared for possible answers, etc. Chao! :)

Thanks for sharing! Also I think Maria is soooo familiar with your accent Cody, that she understood very well what you were ordering. I’m a Canadian and have been studying Spanish casually for 3 years. I can’t wait to practice in Latin America when all is safe and sound. Hopefully you’re still in Colombia as I’ll be paying you a visit! Hasta luego! Vanessa

Hey nice job Cody. You're learning to 'sing the song' of Colombian Spanish well. I sing the "Chilean" version and I'm fascinated with how different the Spanish speaking world differ in their emphasis and slang. I'm going to share this with my online community.

Thank you, once again, Cody! Your pronunciation is getting to be so great! And watching your progress over this past year or so makes me feel so hopeful. What you said at the end about looking up words and practicing to make the video was both transparent and encouraging! I really love that. :)
