The reason the songs change tone is because the OPs reflect the story.
1 - Threat and urgency with the adrenaline of the Titan threat
2 - Regal and hopeful thanks to Eren but no less bloody
3 - Letssss Goooo!!!
4 - Melancholy and personal as its more to do with the people and inside the walls
5 - Letssss Goooo!!! + the ending of the song over the basement for the relief and enlightenment after the loss and effort theyve faced so far

Oh yeah, It only gets better from season 1. So if you think season 1 is hard body, you in for one hell of a treat. Btw, ever since the second half of the final season dropped I, a dragonball head who’s been watching dbz since I was 6, placed it past dbz to claim the title of God of anime. I don’t care what anybody says, Attack on titan has now attained “God of gods” status.

I had two realisations on the AoT theme. One, as they get farther from the walls the less german influence and more english influence there are. Second, the op turns from the protagonist theme to a villain theme. Like that is some plot relevant development on the op's.
Explaination.
One is that i think the people within the walls are like based on Germany and the outside is like asia and america or England. So the songs going from german influence to English is like a really cool detail. The second point...is spoiler territory.

All the endings are different too and give you hints for the future of the story.
My favourite op from Greatest to Least:
#1. Jiyuu no tsubasa - legit an underrated op. It is my favourite because it just has this sense of unshakable patriotism amidst the chaos. Gives me goosebumps everytime, and the only op that I looped for more than 10 times, no cap.
#2. The Rumbling - this grew on me hard. I never liked metal, but the way this song is presented especially made for the final season hits hard. A very epic way to end a series.
#3. Guren no Yumiya - of course the very first op of the anime that made a first impression for me to even start watching this show.
#4. Red Swan - this is soooo good. You can really feel the emotions, especially of what happens on S3 and to the next season. Yes it is not as hype as the others, but this is good in its own way and context.
#5. Shoukei to Shikabane no Michi - a very unexpected likeable op. This made me hype for S3 part 2.
#6. Shinzo wo Sasageyo! - a very overrated op, but that doesn't mean it's bad, it is really good actually, but because of its overrated nature, it made me lose the hype to even listen to this op.
#7. Boku no Sensou - a bit of a stretch from the production just to not show any spoilers. It's good because it grew on me, but not really as good as the others.
Guren no yumiya seems more overhyped to me, but ya got a point
when i saw my war full version i put it on top of my list but hey thats your opinion

The best thing about AOT is that every Opening kinda slaps. There is not a single OP that really sucks, they’re all _at least_ good.

1. Final Season OP 1 “My War” 9/10 This is my favorite. Love the WW1 aesthetic, also Vibe
2. Second Season OP “Sasageyo” 8.5/10 For the Memes!
3. First Season OP 1 “Jäger” 8/10 Everyone knows this OP, even normies who don’t watch anime
4. Third Season OP 2 “Basement” 7.5/10 Very fresh remix imo
5. Final Season OP 2 “Metal” 7.5/10 not really my cup of tee, still a banger
6. First Season OP 2 “Gloria” 7/10 not really that memorable tbh, gets easily overshadowed by the other OPs. I like the German tho
7. Third Season OP 1 “Red Swan” 6/10 I prefer the more hype OPs, but it’s very soothing and relaxing, a welcome change of pace. I like to listen to this once in a while.

Attack on Titan was an anime I slept on for ages. I remember enjoying the first few episodes but thinking it's nothing special. I finally started it again, and holy shit. I was wrong and an idiot. Season 3 and 4 are an absolute fucking ride. Some of the best TV I've ever seen.
Same here, remember watching season 1 back in 2016 and liking it, but moved on and didn’t give it any thought for years. Started the show again last year and binged it, and damn, what an incredible story.

The musicality arrangement is also beautiful. Don't get me wrong, Linked Horizon is a beast tho, ngl their live performance leaves me speechless, but Red Swan is just so different to me.

I love all of them, but this is how i'd rank them.
So, for me it's something like this:
1. Season 2 OP "Shinzou wo sasageyo" - This opening is just too iconic to not put it in the first place. The song is an absolute banger and the animation is great too. All around amazing OP.
2. Season 4 part 2 OP "The Rumbling" - I don't think there is too much to say about this one. It's the final opening for what is probably the most influential and epic anime of the 21st century. It's dark and heavy, but also catchy as fuck. Animation isn't the best in my opinion, but it's still an incredible OP.
3. Season 1 part 1 OP "Guren no yumiya" - This OP is just legendary. It's perfectly encapsulates what the first season of AoT is all about. Its epic and heroic, but also has dark tone to it. The animation is top tear. And although the first season of AoT is the weakest for me, this OP deserves at least 3rd place for how iconic it is.
4. Season 3 part 1 OP "Red Swan" - This opening is the most different from all the other. But it's very fitting for the part of the story, where it's playing. It's soft and somber, but also the least dark out of all the AoT openings. The animation is nice, and although they used a lot of still images in it, OP still looks gorgeous. Overall, I think this OP is not for everyone. I know, that a lot of people dislike it, because it's so different from the rest, but I think it's a nice change of pace from all these dark and epic AoT openings.
5. Season 1 part 2 OP "Jiyuu no tsubasa" - easily the most underrated AoT opening. When the first season came out a lot of people said, that this OP is worse than "Guren no yumiya", because of the song. And I probably agree with that. For me the song is also subpar to the first opening, but where "Jiyuu no tsubasa" shines, is animation. For me it's easily the best animated AoT opening. It's dynamic and gorgeous, there are tons of easter eggs and amazing shots. And although the song is probably the more important part of any opening, I can't put this OP lower than 5th place.
6. Season 4 part 1 OP "My War" - This is probably the most dark and creepy OP. But it suits the first part of the final season very well. The song is probably not for everyone, but personally, I like it. Animation is somewhat limited, but again, it suits the tone of OP. Overall, not the best AoT opening, but it does it job for the final part of the story.
7. Season 3 part 2 OP "Shoukei to shikabane no michi" - for me this opening is a little bit of a mess. In terms of sound, it's basically a mashup of the first three openings, and I would say it sounds pretty chaotic. Animation isn't the best either, with some strange green filter layered over it. It's not a bad opening by any means, but for me it pales in comparison to other AoT openings, which is a shame, since part 2 of season 3 is probably my favourite arc in the whole story.

I disagree with the 'chaoticness' of s3 op2 ruining it, in a way it fits the season super well. Animation of course isn't the greatest but up until the point in the series, there has been no other opening with better animation. Most scenes slowed to give a super intense feeling its pretty nice. just my opinion, and I respect yours of course.
