  • FOUR NEW AA batteries are required for the successful operation of the tube tester. Batteries are not included.
The batteries are inserted into the bottom of the tube tester. The bottom tab should slide out. On the metal inside of the tab, there are + and - symbols. Match corresponding + and - symbols to the batteries’ direction. Place the batteries FACING THE DIRECTION of the appropriate symbol (2 per column). Slide the bottom tab back into place (you may need to hold the batteries in place)
From here, extend the metal antenna from the top. DO NOT touch the power button and the metal at the same time, or you will get a little shock.
Extend the metal antenna, and THEN hold the power button. The red light should flash on and off. If the red light does not go on you have the batteries configured wrong. Take them out and try again. The red light MUST go on when you press the button. From here, GENTLY touch the metal to powered off neon tubes. If the neon tube is good, a small stream of light should flicker inside of the tube. If the neon tube is bad, the tube remains dark and does not light up. Any tubes that do not light using the tube tester are problem tubes and need to be replaced.

Thanks for your question. It gives out 3000V at about 5mA, but only in very short bursts. It is enough to light up a neon bulb, as shown in the video.
