I wish Gigantic would come back.
And movies that Disney accepted become a failure

I love Nimona, the flaws weren’t really of an issue for me, because it was just a fun and endearing story that put the characters first and then made the representation flow naturally
I agree. They had representation while still having the story go naturally
@@boozados Yep, it’s a big breath of fresh air not only just for a story to exist first then representation after the characters are established to be their own characters.

In addition to the gay characters, I read a genderqueer allegory for Nimona's character, and I bet that's not the most original thing to observe. However, I don't think I've ever seen that in a piece of animation/child oriented media. It wasn't explicit in a way that felt pandering, but it felt true and honest to the struggle of trying to shape yourself to your internal image, and the social backlash and mental toll that can take on you. Honestly, really refreshing and affirming to see that.
I really liked the
"Are you a girl or what?"
"I'm Nimona"
And that's ALL the explanation you need🏳️⚧️
Considering that the writer is non-binary/trans. Also, you can see a transflag during one of the most important speech
This^
I also love how Nimona has a character who is unapologetically herself, but still struggles with being seen as a monster when the whole world thinks she is.
Being a trans guy in the southern U.S. right now, that hit especially hard
I like hiw in a tumblr post (I think) he said Nimona wasn't supposed to be a trans story, EVEN THO the trans narrative is very clear, reminds me of the matrix and how the sisters made it unintentionally a trans allegory
This looks like more of a "real movie" than most Disney/Pixar movies these days; an actual movie that people would pay money to see in theatres and enjoy rather than exist in a fictional world.
This was definitely a worthy send off to Blue Sky and this movie payed respect to them.
This film really feels as if it was intended for teens to young adults rather than kids given what it presents with its message and story. AND I LOVE IT

@@martaleja9279what
I don't know about that. I'd say it can pass for kids too since it has a bit of a family movie approach. Plus there are many kids who could relate with being feared for being different. Many of those likely being LGBT kids who are coming to question with their sexuality. I remember having crushes on boys a kid but never explored it or talked to anyone about it. Kids need to see movies that have lgbt representation. Exposure to it leads to kids coming to terms that people are different and don't grow up hateful. But of course most importantly lgbt kids don't have to feel scared to actually ask themselves about their sexuality. They can come to terms earlier and be happier being able to seek out relationships like their peers. Being closeted really sucks
Man, if Disney didn't cancel this movie, they could've had not just another great film under their belt but also one of the most daring and essential movies of our current time.
I doubt. They would be like "look at this guy he is the 1st gay character from disney! giving him like one scene (I am speaking about Ouropelvis) or do the same thing with Strange World
Brooo if Disney didn’t cancel this movie, they definitely would’ve restricted so many things in this movie. I am so glad they kicked Nimona out the window so it could be saved by Netflix and show off its true glory
The film is obviously amazing but the last second is one of my favourite parts. It just sounds so real. It's like he turned around in the studio and actually saw what Bal saw
Nimona was a really good movie and i enjoyed it alot. The animation, artstyle, and the story is really good! I do actually hope they make a sequel for this movie.
The themes of this movie kinda reflected my own life. I used to be homophobic. I used to think that being gay was wrong and that they were stupid for it. Wanna know why I thought this? It wasn’t by my own thought process but my parents. I live in a Christian household so my parents aren’t particularly fond of gay people. So they taught me to be rejecting of them. However I always felt like something wasn’t right. I did the research and I even prayed about it to God and after a lot of prayer I came to realize that it was just a lie. These are just people that are like anyone else and the Bible clearly states that we must love everyone as Jesus once did. Jesus didn’t shun out people who were different but instead loved and cared for them. As a Christian it just sucks seeing how we are constantly doing the exact opposite of what the Bible teaches and then we wonder why there are so many atheists out there. This movie really shows that problem we have today and it does it in such a fantastic way. This movie was simply amazing and it almost feels like a crime to be watching this on a small screen. This film is a rare Netflix W.
we need more people on this planet like you, especially nowadays
@@Cawziiku I really hope that one day we’ll have a more loving world. It’s kinda hard being apart of a small minority of Christian’s that treat the lgbt with as much love as anyone else while most Christians see them as a crime against humanity.

as a transgender queer man, this movie has been so insanely important to me. and as an animation, holy shit its just so good broh
I will never forgive Disney for stopping this movie from a theatrical release, but I'm thankful because I don't think we would've been able to see all the story lines without the censorship that Disney wanted
Fantasy worlds with modern/future technology is a concept that I love but feels so rare to see (even more so seeing it done well). I’m so glad Nimona was able to pull it off so well, both aesthetically and having it visually represent the greater story and message of the movie. It’s truly brilliant!
After I finished the film, I was just smirking to myself cause I was thinking, "You could've made this film Disney, you could be reaping the profits. But nope." So I'm glad the film is getting the attention it deserves.
So Disney hates good art, got it
when i was a young weird trans kid, the nimona comics meant *so much* to me. and as a weird trans adult now, im so incredibly glad that this movie managed to release despite disney trying so hard to prevent it. and it's fucking *DELIGHTFUL*. the tone is so much more different than the comics, but its still done so wonderfully. thank you to all the weird little trans girls of the world
I was expecting this movie to be pretty good already from the trailers, and also from a few pages I saw of the comic floating online. It was BETTER than I expected. I'm sad that I had canceled Netflix just two weeks before the release date.
I was expecting for nimona to just Jesusfied after three days, and when it came I just laughed when Balls just goes "Holy shit" like it's the most obvious thing to happen and it actually happened
Nimona literally made me cry.
"I don't know what's scarier, The fact that everyone in this kingdom wants to run a sword through my heart.. Or that sometimes.. I just wanna let them"

okay now that ao3 is not dead I can actually answer this
@@Luna-TaxersOf Board Games and Small-Minded Questions is one I've read almost as many times as I've watched the movie itself. The arrow in the leg scene is by far my favorite scene in the moves since it hits so close to home how people will ask about me to my face, rather than just ask me a proper question. This oneshot is a good bit of fluff, with a small expansion on the entire idea of a "Small-Minded Question."
If netflix was smart theyd start learning hard into getting as many animated properties as possible give themselves a niche other than just being the first
I love this video but there is one thing I need to say. Ballister and Ambrosius were not just best friends and Ambrosius was not just a crush to Ballister. They were an established couple from the very beginning. In their first scene together, Ambrosius tells Ballister "They will love you, like I do." They were very much a couple from the get-go
Nimona is one of, if not just straight up, my favorite comic of all time. I found it in my English teacher's classroom and I loved it so so so much, and when I heard it was going to become a movie I was PUMPED, then immediately crushed that it was dead. I was so excited when it released on netflix, but at the same time apprehensive because, I mean, it's netflix. I was SO surprised and happy when it turned out as good as it was and it still makes me so happy and I'd say that it holds a solid top ten spot in my "best movies" list
Another cool thing that I noticed is that the audio description track always refers to Nimona as they, which I think is pretty cool
that's such a cool detail omg
Nimona is so important. It means EVERYTHING that this movie got made.
Here I was, scrolling through Netflix out of boredom and I saw the preview and I was extremely intrigued. Facial expression and art style gave me this feeling that this might be a really good watch. I'm already halfway through and the movie is oozing with personality, while I can say I have my fair set of criticisms with the movie, for sure as hell I would rather be watching this than the recent movie Disney dropped as of recent.
i watched this movie last night, i honestly felt so seen and loved all the representation, be it allegorical or outright, and the animation was 👌👌💪💪💪🤌🤌🤌🤌
I like that they credited blue skies in the ending too :)) one last hoorah and it was a good one
I think we can all agree on one thing.
If this movie does not win an Oscar, this entire fandom is going to RIOT.
If it wasn't for Spider-Verse, this could've easily been a strong contender to win the Award
@@madiiiskyblu while I would love to see Nimona being rewarded, it doesn't really subvert as many expectations as how Spider-Verse did with its narrative.
@@madiiiskybluI wouldn’t say it’s fair to call spiderverse ‘the same thing’ when it is extremely creative and innovative. It is nothing like any other spider-man cinema and it is one of a kind in animated movies as well. It really wasn't that great or impressive so I'd disagree. However, it is still undoubtedly important and worth the watch for youth's.
Nimona is definitely my personal favourite movie this year. I'm just such a sucker for ND Stevenson's writing and relatable characters.
John Wick 4 and Access The Spiderverse are much better, and Dune part 2 will be once that comes out
@@Jackrabbit7 Of course they are. I saw spider verse like last week and obviously the animation and sound design was better, but I don't see em doing a near suicide in a PG movie lol. Note, "personal favourite"
I really enjoyed Stevenson’s take on She-Ra and i think Nimona is ND’s magnum opus.
I hope The Lumberjanes gets to be adapted into an animated series soon.
I feel like for a lot of queer characters in media have to REALLY show the fact that they're gay and really point it out because they NEED to. Shows and movies NEED to make sure that their gay characters are well known for the little rep we get. I feel like this makes it almost a little awkward and cringy at times and for me sort of interrupts the story or takes me out of the show. Like, in this word why does it matter? why point it out if its normal and okay?
This movie just felt like they wrote a relationship that just happens to be gay. It was just such a breath of fresh air to me and I really enjoied it. There wasnt that awkward, we need to make sure they know we we gay. The story and the way the characters interacted explained that very well to us.
Tldr: as a queer person it was nice to see such a "regular" gay couple in their odd situation lol. I also loved the movies story even if a little predictable or with dabbing hehe
I watched this movie myself first, and with my little brother and sister second, it only got better the second time.
Loved the plot especially the ending were the wall was destroyed and there were no monster outside the walls only their imagination feeding them lies

Why does Disney cancel beloved pieces of animation with gay characters (I know why) IM STILL SALTY ABOUT OWL HOUSE DISNEY

It was such an great movie!
Thank you so much for covering it!
The ONLY problem I have with the movie is that when Nimona turns into a creature of some kind, they just kinda, turn into pink chewed-bubblegun. Aside from the kinda bland and monotonous look of that, it's so fuckin fantastic. I watched it with my little sister-in-law and we were both just glued to it the whole time.
It’s awesome seeing not only this film reach our screens but also with just how great it turned out! But it’s also very sad seeing what path that Blue Sky could’ve gone down with making even more stylized and just great movies had it not been for the devil Disney themselves
I found alot of the humour to be kinda lame unfortunately, but the core of the movie is excellent. I'm glad this got revived, it's not every day you see a dead project come back, especially one as good as this.
So between canceling this and ending owl house prematurely Disney's homophobia has given them not only two huge L's in their publicity but also their wallets. Love to see it
Disney didn't end the Owl House because they were homophobic but ended it for other collective reasons. Dana Terrace herself has said this several times.
Hate to break this to you friend, but not supporting LGBTQ ain't homophobic. Plus, I think they're dying because of no creativity
the chaotic opening was 🤌🏻 very much matched the vibe of the film and we respect that

Edit: I also just finished the movie after watching your video and wow, what a darn good movie.
Am glad the movie was made
I found Nimona's personal struggle of being othered to hit incredibly close to home as a trans person who fled my home state of Florida. Her line "I don’t know what’s scarier. The fact that everyone in this kingdom wants to run a sword through my heart, or that sometimes I just want to let them." is as devastating as it is relatable.
...Disney buried Crater of all movies?
I mean, it wasn't very special and almost downright bland, but it had some decent production values & ideas.
This movie was so good 😭😭 I read the book like 6 years ago and I was so obsessed with it at the time so it’s fun to be obsessed with the same stories and characters all over again. It’s a beautiful story and I love the animation style
I thought it looked kinda meh, wasn't gonna watch it... But then I did and GOOD GOD was I not disappointed
I went into this movie expecting a generic kids movie but my God Nimona is so good
I love when gay people are just people rather than a statement or the focus is on their gayness (there is a focus on their relationship, but not them being gay cause that is normal).

Fantastic fantastic film, one of the best LGBT representations I’ve seen in a long time!! And on top of that, it was actually GOOD. You know how hard it is to find a great film with queer rep? 😂
One underrated scene from Nimona was the first time Ballister and Nimona try to convince Ambrosius of the Director killing the Queen using the phone from the squire. When Nimona interjects trying to help Ballister, the Director says, “Coming from a ______ (I forgot what she said here) like you, whispering into his ear,” as she leans into Ambrosius’s ear saying that. Who’s the ________ now?
the movie feels really sad but in the same time really funny and interesting ❤
It’s insane that Disney a company that started as an animation company treats animation so awfully. And movies. Where I live, we appreciate any kind of art. Saving everything we can. Old tv programs. A lot of ads. Everything like that
i used to read this book constantly. it was one of my favorites ever. i haven't watched the adaptation yet and I'm a bit dismayed they got rid of some of the more *violent* aspects of the comic for the PG rating (you'll have to read it), but i ALWAYS thought this would be an amazing comic to adapt and I'm so happy to see it happen! it's always great for passion projects to receive such a warm response and i hope more people read the source material now, because it is also phenomenal.
thank you nick, I love this movie
I remember seeing Seen a trailer of this movie on Instagram. It was instantly excited to see it. So much so that the date came out was the one thing that was on my mind. It really changed how we see heroes and fantasies. For instance, when we see a flashback in the series, Loki, with female Loki, she imagines a dragon attacking when the Valkyrie goes to kill it and stop it saving everyone. This is one of the few things to rethink how we see things differently.
I think this movie could’ve sucked if Disney were the ones to release it. I absolutely loved nimona, despite coming into it super cynical, I enjoyed it. it’s totally cool and it has so many nice ideas and pretty animation.
I watched it a few days ago. I think I want to rewatch it a few times because oh god how fucking good is this movie. Realizing I was trans just a little before watching Nimona is like getting hit in the face by a bullet train made of acceptance. An incredibly personal look at being transgender, and just subtle enough for your parents to not realize the real reason you're crying.
I first found out about Nimona when I was reading the comic to pass the time while I was serving an after school.
Disney trying not to cancel media with gay characters challenge (impossible)
I love that you bring up a lgbtq+ movie. There are so many movie channels that go really right wing and just hate on everything that applies to their idea of "woke" nowadays. Thank you i really needed this.
Disney gave it the boot because it was too gay for them in terms of a kids content. They did it with The Owl House and they did it with this.

Nimona is seriously now one of my new favorite animated movies because while yes it does has its flaws to it, there's so much to this movie that I personally relate too and really get were its coming from on dealing with deep systematic prejudices and how society look also see you like your dangerous and just shouldn't exist at all amongst other things about this movie I think any minority group can relate towards when it comes to dealing with shit like this on a daily basis at times. Especially if your LGBTQ+ or Black or any POC or all of those things at once then you most likely will knows what it feels like when dealing with issues like this within the world today and Nimona reflects that very much.
