This review reminds me of an Irish sketch show that I saw many years ago (probably on Tara TV when that was on air) where Irish people would be engaging in something entirely mundane and solemn like a funeral or brain surgery when someone would run in shouting "OH MY GOD!! EVERYONE!!!! THE AMERICANS ARE COMING!!!!!" The Irish people would then make a mad dash to launch an impromptu ceilidh purely for the benefit of American tourists "OH MY GOD, I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW IRISH EVERYTHING IS!!!" Seriously, aren't Americans aware that mobile phones aren't a new thing in Ireland?
I think these two 'critics' are insufferable. I know Matthew Goode doesn't like it, but his acting is beautiful, especially in the second half. I don't think Amy Adams is right for this role.
Anna is gullible and Declan is a jrk. But both played by very attractive actors so thats what drawn me. To be fair, those 12 min are the boyfriend did propose to her (not her) but for a different reason. Declan didnt take the money from her but saved the pub anyway with the help from villagers and customers. She did tho propose to Declan but he rejected her and propose to her instead. So I think its not a complete lost.
I saw this film because I like Amy Adams (based esp. on her performance in Junebug) and Matthew Goode (those eyes, that face). But he's right, the script was not brilliant.
@beingain Have you seen the movie? If yes, did you think it sucked and why? PS. If you're wondering why @beingain is at the beginning of the comment, I clicked the reply button and it came up automatically.
We will be much younger, and female. Well, not MUCH younger, cause I'm taking my mum. But still, given that we're much younger and female, we'll just go for the Goode. Cause really - how can you not?
Well when I finally got around to watching this film (when it was on channel4 sometime this year; recorded though!), it really was like Kermode said. It's a soul-draining experience, and the only redeeming feature is Amy Adams and Matthew Goode had some decent chemistry and acting. But it's still a 1 star film. The rest is just badly written crap and was a waste of time.
@KingMinosxxvi Letting off steam is fine, but basically going "I like this movie but you don't? Fuck you" is just pointless and dumb. I don't see what it brings to the table at all, often it merely makes the poster himself look silly. There are myriads of idiots out there who don't know the definition of the word "opinion" who cannot handle the possibility of someone disagreeing with them, resulting in juvenile name calling. I'd think you'd want to distance yourself from that group. Peace.
"THAT'S A TERRIBLE THING TO SAY!!!" God, Mark is such a lefty. "You're going to regret saying that" "No, I'm not" God, I love Simon. P.S. I like Mark too for his reviews but his politics annoy me, which have nothing to do with his reviews (mostly) so it's fine
what's wrong with Mayo saying that the target audience is younger females? It clearly is... Is Mark's disgust a result of his feminist wife's influence on him?
"The girl is played by Amy Adams, the boyfriend's played by somebody else."
"I saw it several weeks ago, when I saw the trailer."
Absolutely. SAVAGE.
All this film needed was some Leprechauns to appear, and I’d have kicked my TV out of the window. Hideous film.
"The nuclear strike in the final 12 minutes" 🤣🤣
Well, it was necessary to get rid of the Kaiju invaders having a punchup with an off-brand Transformer on the Giants Causeway
The way they played the part of Simon interviewing a star who refused to be interviewed is hilarious.
When Mark says "That's terrible", he sounds like Jill from Alan Partridge.
'Lovely Jill...' The story sounds like Spaced crossed with a Family Guy or Simpsons episode where they go to a cliched version of Ireland!

I snickered once too but then I went back to Mars bars.
This comment reached across nine years to make me chuckle
How big do the makers of this film think Ireland is? Even if she flew into Shannon, what possible route to Dublin needs an overnight stop?
Doesn't matter. The Americans don't know that.
I will happily say, this remains one of my favourite Kermoods and Leap Year is still a lovely film.
I have to say l disagree with these obnoxious critics.
"A loovely fillum it is, to be sure."
@@saltech3444 To be sure.
So it is
Adore everything Kermode says but I can’t deny, I loved this film!
This review is brilliant - so funny!

The guy in the background's facial expressions really do add to this amazing review!
Mark - 'The only joke in the film I laughed at, which was the double use of the word 'poo''.
Simon - 'Which is quite funny actually'
Brilliant
I'm offended by that target audience comment. I'm 26 and found this movie painful to watch. Being young does not eliminate ALL taste.
I'm 25 and I woke up from a coma after the credits rolled.
Mark hasn't changed at all in the past 6 years.
Unfortunately he has in the subsequent 8.
I think that he's mellowed a bit 🤔
@@thebagelsproductions He's just getting tired and it's kinda normal, after all, it comes with age.
Like if you laughed at "Poo"
love the way mayo says diddling
Still waiting for a film where the girl and the boyfriend are both played by Amy Adams.

They should have a trailer of the year category.
Amy Adams is smart, sexy and a great actress so why oh shy would she have to lower herself by staring in this second grade romcom.
Ah, the Irish and their love of the word "poo".
@beingain Have you seen the movie? If yes, did you think it sucked and why?

Some things sucked about this movie; Amy Adams, and a lot of the writing, but Matthew Goode saves it at the end.
Heh heh heh. He said "Poo."
Hand on heart, I laughed. They said Dublin was a lovely city. Feckin eejits
So, in Watchmen we thought that Adrian's plan was to unleash untold death instead it's this film.... ozzymandias why you do this to us.
How's the country's lawsuit going against that load of tripe anyway?
We will be much younger, and female. Well, not MUCH younger, cause I'm taking my mum. But still, given that we're much younger and female, we'll just go for the Goode. Cause really - how can you not?
Exactly!
In the trailer! This was ALL IN THE TRAILER!

Rebuilding My Career was pretty good though
The trailer is so bad and it does actually include all of that... Crazy.
As an Irish person, Ive never seen this film but based on the trailer, and everything else I know, I hate this film
@cessna65423 ^^^ This proves prats should not post comments on un-pratish places.
Goode's Irish accent makes me ears bleed.

I thought the film was enjoyable.
Rom-com without the com? A rom 'poo'? (Or is that the president of the EU?)
Women seem to love this film, it has a 4.5 rating on Google. Probably being reviewed by the wrong audience...
"THAT'S A TERRIBLE THING TO SAY!!!"
God, Mark is such a lefty.

"No, I'm not"
