We just grew nasturtiums for the first time this year; we planted them right in our cucumber beds. We're very pleased with them; they are still producing a few blooms now in the heat of August in Tennessee. Through the late spring and early-mid-summer they were just covered with blooms and they haven't required any unusal care. No troubles with pests or disease, just a fantastic, beautiful low-maintenence plant. We'll plant a lot more next year!
I am in zone 6 and I just put the seed without soaking right into my raised bed and a month later I have nasturtiums! I love that these plants are so easy.. I walk around with seeds in my purse to randomly plant them because they are so pretty, lol .. I love the empress of India ones best!
Nasturtiums actually thrive from neglect and poor soil conditions. They do well in native nd clay soils and reseed very easily every year. The more nutrients you give, the more leaves and less flowers
I grew Nasturtium from seed for the first time this year and only got 3 seedlings from a packet of about 15 seeds, despite soaking them in water before planting and using poor soil (I heard from other sources this is better) so I'm impressed you got most of yours to germinate! That variegated variety is really pretty, too! I planted the Empress of India variety.
@Alison Farquhar, Well, it's actually not your fault at all that you got only 3 seedlings out of 15 seeds. Many times, sellers don't provide the fresh seeds and because of that we get very low germination rate. Thank you very much for your words and I hope your plants would do GREAT in coming days, Wish you all the BEST :-)
Every part of the plant is edible and is a natural antibiotic. I gather seeds for planting and I pickle them along with my cucumbers. Thanks for all your info.

I was looking for nasturtium care video starting from seed germination. Among all videos yours is best. All points covered and up to point. No useless lecture. 👍
Thank you for the very helpful tutorial, especially your advice on fertilizers! I am growing nasturtiums in a small container garden. I can’t wait to see the blooms like the ones in your videos!
Thank you so much for your video! My first attempt of sowing failed. It was after watching your video that I finally saw some of my 90 seeds starting to germinate!
That's a great news, wish you all the best n I am really happy for you! Nasturtiums are truly very beautiful and don't need too much care :-) Once you have some healthy plants in your garden, you would find many seedlings here and there as they produce lots of seeds and they self-seed quite easily!
Helpful video thanks and a cute little dancer to present the end result! Nasturtiums delighted me last year and I saved the seeds to give them a go this year. I hope the look as good as yours!
Great info, I sow these right into the ground in my garden, but yours look so much better than mine. I think I’m going to try your method! And your daughter is adorable. 🙂

Great video, cute baby dancing. My question is, we have planted the nastrium seeds outdoors and it has been 2 months since planted, we have all the green stems but not one flower blossomed out as yet. Any tips?
Great informative video! Thank you! I’m growing empress of India nasturtiums they’ve all germinated but they’re getting a little leggy for my liking. Time to transplant them outside I think!
@Nat Herron, Thank you so much for the feedback, appreciate it :-) Since they are getting leggy, definitely it's time to transplant them outside :-) Good luck :-)
I love nasturtiums and I plant them every year to put in my salad’s to eat. But I live in Texas where it gets really hot how do I prevent them from dying so early?
Vermiculate in soil will keep moisture longer. Do not use pots with holes in the bottom. Use one with holes on the side bit higher up, so there is some water left in the bottom-make one your self of pot without holes. Put also growel in the bottom for good airing of roots. Use pots with Light colors. Dark color makes pot very hot. Good luck.
@Leslee Williams, Just Googled and I can see that current temp in Texas is somewhat high..Unfortunately, they don't like High Temp :-( But still, you can protect them by limiting the direct sun exposure. This is the same thing I do whenever I want my Winter flowering plants to extend their blooming period. So, you can just provide them 2-3 hours of morning sunlight and then bright light for the rest of the day. I hope it works for you as well :-) You got one reply from Helen Gren. @Helen Gren, really thank you for taking time to reply. But, for any container plant, I really don't recommend to use a pot where there is not a single drainage whole. Roots of any plants don't want to sit in water unless we are not growing them hydroponically. Hydroponic is totally a different thing. But, I am 100% agree with your opinion about using pots with light colors. Dark color makes pot very hot and it's better to avoid them. Thank you once again to both of you and take care :-)
Nasturtium originates from hot countries, so no problem if it gets hot...From the link: "well-drained soil in full sun. They can grow in partial shade, but they will not bloom as well." Important to add vermiculate or perlit in soil too keep it most. Self watering pots could be very helpful If it gets very hot & makes it easier for You, so You don't have to run often with water can or moving plants to avoid full sun - it is hot in brightlight as well. @Sheamini Vevekanantham, Thank you SOOOOOOOOOO much for your words, I truly appreciate it :-) For planting Rose plants on ground, you can do these things (giving an example of an area of 4 feet length X 2 fee width) - 1. You can plant 2-3 Rose plants easily in that area but 2 would be much better 2. Add sufficient amount of either Vermicompost, Compost or composted cow dung manure. Just turn the soil a bit and then mix them with the soil properly (like we mix well everything while preparing any potting soil mix to grow in container) Adding 3-5 kgs would be more than enough but if the soil is too hard, you would need to add other organic matters such as dried leaves etc. Anyway, after adding any compost or cow dung manure, the soil would become soft anyway. 3. Make sure the place gets at least 5-6 hours of direct sun 4. Make holes deep enough for the root ball of the plants 4. Plant the Rose plants and then water the. You are done and from next onwards, if you fertilize them once in 3-4 months, it would be more than enough. I already have videos about the fertilizers for Rose plants. But since you are growing them in ground, you can definitely increase the amount of fertilizers and please select the organic solution. Here are the two videos - Chemical + Organic Fertilizers - ua-cam.com/video/u4TCSVYq4FU/v-deo.html Organic fertilizer - ua-cam.com/video/pHka4FZTqUE/v-deo.html Hope that helps and plz let me know if you have any questions, thank you :-)
All my nasturum seedlings died during winter they became big after that they dried but some i evenly threw in a bucket where we sowed mustard seeds and amazingly they now bloom heavily without any care they bloomed
@Dev Creations, That's really great to know and I am glad for you that they are blooming well :-) Sometimes, plants behave weirdly. I mean, they don't do well when we take too much care but do well when we neglect them..:D
@@GardeningUpbeat my beautiful roses died 2 died before winter which were 2 years old 2 more died this time suddenly the plants dried soil was moist great roots developed new nodes came but they all became black saddened my 4 year gerbera all roots died only one survived still under gods grace i have it
@Dev Creations, Sorry to know about that. I can understand how it feels when a plant die :-( Look like, your plants were affected by Die back disease - one popular fungal disease mostly found on Roses. Need to use fungicide. At this time of the year, many plants get fungal attack and we need to use fungicide. Good to know at least one Gerbera is surviving. If you want to add any reply, plz write a new comment instead of replying here. UA-cam doesn't send any notification for nested comment, not sure why. I was checking manually and then saw your reply.
Usually, 10” pot means Depth is 10” and Width is also 10”. This applies to normal types of pots. But, definitely we do have lots of other pots for special purpose where both are not same. Like for Bonsai, we usually use pot with more width but less depth. I have used the as usual pot, means normal pot here. Hope, I have cleared your doubt but in case if you have any questions, please let me know.
@@GardeningUpbeat 😊😊 Thank you the way you explain its excellent. Tomorrow I am going to plant nasturtium seed in seedling tray with your way Sir. Thanks again for your kindness. God bless stay safe.
@Lavanya Bathula, Most welcome n thank you so so much for your words, appreciate it. To protect from pests, neem oil can be used once in 7-10 days. Dose - 5-6 ml Neem oil + 4 ml light handwash n then mix them in 1 ltr water. Then spray on the leaves n if possible, on both sides of leaves. If Neem oil doesn't work, you can use Chemical pesticide such as Rogor. Dose - just 1 ml in 1 liter water, hope that helps, thank you 😊
@Lavanya Bathula, Min 6 inch and even you can use much larger pot, like 10-12 inch and grow more than a single plant there like I did. That way, it would look much fuller 😊😊 One request - I would appreciate if you don't call me Sir, thank you :-)
Hello Chandan Tried my hand at thd same had several saplings which had been reported they grew but never like what you have shown in your presentation and eventually dried out anc died. So what did I not do right? Oh some plants needs the midas touch as your!
@Anthony Pereira, Terribly sorry for the late response..normally I try to respond ASAP but missed it somehow :-( Dried out and died - I suspect only one thing and that is high temperature. Other than that, I really don't think that you would something wrong with your plants as you are already an expert :-) Anyway, many of my plants died too...3 are still surviving but size of the leaves is getting decreased quite a lot and very less bloom - only 2-3. Not worried too much as they grow well in winter time in my place. Plus, I can see some baby seedlings are growing themselves here n there. Going to transplant 2-3 of them and let's see what happens :-) Would be an interesting case study! Have a wonderful time and take care :-)
@@GardeningUpbeat Yes the heat the humidity are the spoilers and many of my plants have suffered this year in particular due to extreme fluctuations guess it's a cycle My cherished dream is to see success and a hue of flowers of all shapes and sizes and colours too. Have a good weekend Cheers
Im following your videos from long thanks for every information and every video Please tell me the list of flower plants we can sow in August in india, im so confusing i don't have more time to see all videos again and again . Can you please help me
Alright, I can totally understand. Please allow me 2 days. I would upload one video and it would cover almost 45+ flowering plants that we can start growing from August end onward. Would need to go through my hard drive and then list all the flowers. Hope, that would be fine.
@The Fullers, 90 would be bit high and they are not going to grow well. They would germinate but would not grow and bloom well. In my place current temp is almost same and I can see some growing here and there (they self-seed really well) but not growing how they did in winter. It would be better to wait to fall and you ca sow the seeds when temp is around 65+ (night time). Though, they can tolerate minimum temperatures like 20 - 30. Thank you for watching the video :-)
@MONALISA MAITY, Honestly saying, it depends on climate. If temperature in summer is not high (let's say above 25°C - 30°C), you can definitely grow them in Summer. But, in my place Summer temperature is really high and sometimes it goes above 35°C. It's too high for Nasturtium and they don't survive. Nasturtium prefers cool climate (not frost) and so mostly grown in winter (in my place and in many places of India). Thank you for watching the video, have a great time :-)
You can precultivate plant indoors in March. We have those plats in Sweden & correct they blooming in summer.. If outdoors, wait for april /May. It usually says on the back of the seedpocket, which are the best Times for Your Country. Good luck 🙏
Nasturtium originates from hot countries, No problem with hot & sun as long as it is well drained and watered. www.britannica.com/plant/nasturtium-Tropaeolum-genus
Hi. In your video you have mentioned that the seeds will germinate between temperatures of 13-20 degrees centigrade. Does it mean the seeds wont germinate at temperatures higher than that? I'm asking because i sowed my seeds about 3-4 days back and the average temperature here as of now is 30 degrees C
@Andrew Karthak, It would germinate but ideal temperature is 13-20 degrees centigrade. They would germinate even if the temp is 30. They did the same for me in last summer :-) They self-seeded and lots of new plants grew here n there in Summer...
@Rajakumaran viji, Thank you so so much :-) I buy seeds mostly from Amazon, TrustBasket & SeednPots. The Nasturtium seeds were from Amazon (Craft Seeds). Plz note that, not all seeds from Amazon are really high quality. This is the reason why I buy seedlings from reputed nurseries in my place. But, whatever I grew this season, none of them were available in nurseries in my place. So, buying seeds online was the only option. Anyway, I can say that Nasturtium seeds from Craft Seeds are the good one :-) Thank you :-)
Hey thanks for the info I'm looking forward to grow this plant . My question is my aloe vera plant is changing its colour . It's kind of getting brown .why ?
@Megha Tamang, Thank you for watching the video, appreciate it. For Aloe Vera - May I know if you have recently repoted it? or moved the plant from one place to another? If yes, this might happen but no worry, they are hardy plant. But anyway, plz decrease watering. They are succulent, so need water very less frequently.

For planting Rose plants on ground, you can do these things (giving an example of an area of 4 feet length X 2 fee width) -
1. You can plant 2-3 Rose plants easily in that area but 2 would be much better
3. Make sure the place gets at least 5-6 hours of direct sun
Here are the two videos - Chemical + Organic Fertilizers - ua-cam.com/video/u4TCSVYq4FU/v-deo.html Organic fertilizer - ua-cam.com/video/pHka4FZTqUE/v-deo.html Hope that helps and plz let me know if you have any questions, thank you :-)
What is the ideal time for seedling ??
Nice video plz tell how become ur plant busy
Hi, would they grow in humid tropical climates (like Southeast Asia)?
Very nice and detailed video...
Awesome video thanks
Most welcome and thank you for watching 🙂
Do you collect your own seed pods and if so , when and how ?
I was checking manually and then saw your reply.
when you say 10” 6” do you mean the pot’s width or the pot depth? what are the pots’ full dimensions?
Usually, 10” pot means Depth is 10” and Width is also 10”. This applies to normal types of pots. But, definitely we do have lots of other pots for special purpose where both are not same. Like for Bonsai, we usually use pot with more width but less depth. I have used the as usual pot, means normal pot here. Hope, I have cleared your doubt but in case if you have any questions, please let me know.
Can we grow these plant in may

😊😊 Thank you the way you explain its excellent. Tomorrow I am going to plant nasturtium seed in seedling tray with your way Sir. Thanks again for your kindness. God bless stay safe.
Great video. Did you pinch them in a certain way to make the plant dense and have that wonderful round shape?
Very good information tqsm .n ur daughter is so so cute.could u tell me the pest problems of this plant?!
Dose - just 1 ml in 1 liter water, hope that helps, thank you 😊
@@GardeningUpbeat tqsm ❤️❤️
@@GardeningUpbeat what about the exact size of pot required for this plant sir
@Lavanya Bathula, Min 6 inch and even you can use much larger pot, like 10-12 inch and grow more than a single plant there like I did. That way, it would look much fuller 😊😊 One request - I would appreciate if you don't call me Sir, thank you :-)
@@GardeningUpbeat tqsm for ur valuable reply ji😀😀
Hi, what is the appropriate gallon size of the nasturtium tank for growing nasturtium!?
Hello Chandan
Tried my hand at thd same had several saplings which had been reported they grew but never like what you have shown in your presentation and eventually dried out anc died.

Yes the heat the humidity are the spoilers and many of my plants have suffered this year in particular due to extreme fluctuations guess it's a cycle
My cherished dream is to see success and a hue of flowers of all shapes and sizes and colours too.
Have a good weekend
Cheers
Nice information sir 👍,can I sow seeds of this plant in this month ,is this perineal plant ,plZ share ,Thanku 🥰🥰
Im following your videos from long thanks for every information and every video
Please tell me the list of flower plants we can sow in August in india, im so confusing i don't have more time to see all videos again and again . Can you please help me
Alright, I can totally understand. Please allow me 2 days. I would upload one video and it would cover almost 45+ flowering plants that we can start growing from August end onward. Would need to go through my hard drive and then list all the flowers. Hope, that would be fine.
@@GardeningUpbeat thank you so much I'm eagerly waiting for your video
at what temperature should we plant the seeds? Its reaching into the low 90's here most days. Should I just wait to try in the fall? Thank you!!
@@GardeningUpbeat thank you so much!!! we will add them to our late fall garden :)
Can we grow this planet in march as well??. i brought it from nursery yesterday and the shopkeeper told me it's a summer flowering plant.

Love this
Nice 👍
Can we sow nasturtium seems in Punjab in November? The weather is becoming quite cold?
Waooo beautiful
Nice Chandan
Which site u buy
Flower seeds ?
Thank you
@Rajakumaran viji, Thank you so so much :-) I buy seeds mostly from Amazon, TrustBasket & SeednPots. Anyway, I can say that Nasturtium seeds from Craft Seeds are the good one :-) Thank you :-)
@@GardeningUpbeat Thanks for reply Chandan
@Rajakumaran viji, Most welcome :-) Happy gardening :-)
Hey thanks for the info I'm looking forward to grow this plant . My question is my aloe vera plant is changing its colour . It's kind of getting brown .why ?
@Megha Tamang, Thank you for watching the video, appreciate it. For Aloe Vera - May I know if you have recently repoted it? or moved the plant from one place to another? If yes, this might happen but no worry, they are hardy plant. But anyway, plz decrease watering. They are succulent, so need water very less frequently.

Wonderful video! Where can I buy this seeds?
Thank you!
I pull out the nasturtium vines as it disturb the footpath, now immensed in water, can I plant it? or, throw away?
Sure, you can plant them and they would grow easily as they are kinda hardy plant :-) Good luck :-)
I just use fertilizer sticks or Miracle Gro mixed with water in my plants or planter pots 🪴 or when training seedlings 🌱
