I like how these early retro videos are a double shot of nostalgia now too the original time they were released as well as the years they reminisce upon, throw Christmas on top of that and they're a recipe for building a great vault of content. Ty Pat!
Holy shit! Big same! I’m from South Jersey but my dad worked in Trenton and always got the Star Ledger; he saw the contest and cut it out for me. The gimmick was since you’ve mastered the NES, try to win their “next generation” system by answering NES trivia questions - the NES questions were therefore about facts from when you conquered certain games. I remember I had to guess on a few, too, like the question: at the end of Double Dragon when you rescue Marion, what side of the room was the plant on. (That game was hard as balls and I didn’t beat it until years later in college.) I later saw another promotion in the Courier Post for a free TurboGrafx game with proof of purchase, and I wrote them a letter saying I got the system but didn’t exactly purchase it. They must have been feeling generous so they still sent me a free game! Great memories.
Every time I see Pat's NES collection, I smile with a tear in my eye. From one gamer to another... it's just... so beautiful. Pat is also awesome and funny, glad that I subscribed to him!
It is great to see Pat's success over the years and we can't blame him at all for expanding his creativity into avenues other than the Punk. But in genre of playing a character who reviews games, this and a few of his other holiday videos are my favorite ones. Pat somehow was able to tap into that joy and happiness of being a kid at Christmas at that period of history and bringing it to life for us as adults, even if just for a few moments. Thanks buddy
You know, I'm not the hugest fan of you Pat, But you set this up so well by the time you opened the Turbo Game, i was crying. Thank you for helping me feel a little holiday cheer.
Pat your just unadulterated awesomeness, when my son is older I'll encourage him to watch your vids (especially flea market madness) you actually leave me smiling after them. Your amazeaballs.
I called one today by me where the guy thought Atari & Colecovision was the same thing lol These dudes need history lessons before they're given jobs =P
About the jacket being adult size: You have to remember that we all loved to wear ridiculously over-sized jackets and sweaters and things back in 1989 and 1990 days. If they were early teens, like maybe 14 or so, they would be almost full grown anyway, so it's fully believable that the jacket would be that size.
I assume someone named Denise worked at Turbo Grafix USA back in the day and Pat found it in a thrift store. The story is part of the ongoing saga of his Childhood friend Kevin.
oh gee, this made me cry.. especially that happy facial expression when you were playing magical chase... its like-- many years of pain and finally the best day of your life comes..
This makes me happy. I've only seen the show once or twice and it's easily been AT LEAST a year since then. My brother got 'suckered in' by one of his friends and got a TurboGrafx-16. I loved it. There wasn't anything I didn't like about it except that no one I knew had one or had even heard of it. I had a SNES and Genesis at the time and my brother handed down the TG16 at my insistence instead of tossing it when moving out.
Not saying this happened. But if i was selling a game to Pat that was rare. I would cut him a deal just because i know what he will do with it. Entertain us and preserve
I live in Western NY, and I hate the thought of snow. But I can't stop watching this video, it reminds me of my youth at Christmas. I loved getting video game stuff in present form. :)
TurboGrafx 16 was an interesting system, a friend gave me hers back around 2003 .. I had it for a couple years, collected some games for it on ebay and then sold it. The hu-cards were cool and some of the games were nuts! so many sprites moving around on the screen at once it was insane! These days have I have a emulator on my mac that plays TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine roms. Hope you have Devil's Crush, a great pinball game!
Sometimes you just gotta open it just to say "I opened a rare item, and it was GLORIOUS!" It's also just great to play something that no one else has played. One owner, one player. I did that with a 30 year old record. I was told it was a stupid thing to do, but I don't regret it for a second. It's not every day you get to hear brand new vintage vinyl.
I remember reading about the Turbo Grafix 16 in comic books but i never saw any of those commercials before. Thank you Pat for the cool, informative gaming history revist!
I grew up in Chicago and we had TV ads all the time. Also, they set up a console at my local McDonalds and held tournaments for local kids to enter, to win one. To get kids interested in playing the system.
Just bought a Turbo Duo R off eBay from Japan. We have a shit ton of games for Turbo Chip and CD but we wrecked our old console and CD port. So excited! It's upgraded with new capacitors and RGB hookup.
I had the TG16 in 1992 and purchased the turbo booster plus for composite, and if I remember correctly it also had internal memory to save games. I found the TG16 CD in 95 for 60 bucks at a used game store in my home town, remembering it was like 600 bucks a few years before and it came and went that fast out of Toys R Us. Had alot of Hu Card games and like 7 CD games from the game store. Donated it to a needy family of kids without a system when I got a PS2 in 2000. Great system, alot great time
Pat, I love you. I'm not saying I never heard of the Turbografx 16, I'm a nerd, so come on, but this video was the final push it took me to actually go and try playing some Turbografx games. I'm definitely going to start a collection now.
I had to reattach my balls after laughing them off, this episode was hilarious! I lived in rural Mississippi when I was a kid and I seen a few commercials of the TurboGrafx. Upon seeing the commercial my heart would race at the sight of such colorful games, especially Bonk. Hell, I always just assumed that was the pack-in title they sold with the console. Also, that Street Fighter II port blew my mind, un-fucking-real.
I enjoy the message in the video! He seems miserable thinking about Denise but then he is happy by the end of the video because he is playing turbo grafix 16 and gets to feel like a kid again. Anytime life seems hard I always bring out the old Nintendo and play some old school games. Then life becomes awesome again! Goodtimes!!
Thx for your effort. I love TurboGrafx16, especially for Blazing Lazers & their version of R-Type. Well documented and stating their strength was shoot-em-up games. You are clever, a nerd, annoying, and full of information that I like to hear. Keep doing what you do...
We used to have the console, but it’s not working anymore. The TurboGrafx 16 was released in 1989 by NEC and Hudson Soft, and it was the first and only 16-Bit console before the Sega Genesis came in. It has a decent library of games, and many of the games are not too bad for its time. This was also the same company that now makes digital cinema projectors which were used in movie theaters which were also made by NEC where it replaced the traditional 35mm movie projectors, the most expensive movie projectors ever exist and they were beasts.
I know it's scripted, but the end where Pat is just playing Magical Chase and one of the last shots is him just smiling enjoying the game, it's nice and wholesome. I love it.
Similar to your story, I also won a TurboGrafx-16 contest [Turbo Titans] off a Chicago Sun Times Sunday paper (August 19, 1990) by answering 5 NES related questions! But, this is the fun part: unlike your parents telling you a UPS package arrived, my mom intercepted it, wrapped it in gift wrap...and gave it to me on Christmas day! I knew something was off the moment I saw it as she never bought me any gifts THAT big! I was pretty pissed she did something so weird! But anyway, I caught up with you once on Facebook to share the story because I saw your post on the PCEngine-FX forums and I've been looking for info on these 1990 contests which were sponsored by NEC (and Data East given the Bloody Wolf pack-in). Too bad it's lost to time for us history buffs.
I would love to see a rerelease of TG16 similar to the rerelease of Neo Geo Gold where the games are stored in a SD card and allow indie developers to make games for it.
Don't worry, Pat. You'll find someoe eventually. Congratulations by the way on finally getting Magical Chase. At least you got one good thing this year! That must've set you back a lot (I don't think you really sold your kidney for it). Still, Happy New Year, Pat, and keep on making videos!
Wait, Atlus was involved in Bonk's Adventure? Don't you just love that, looking back at an old game and realizing your favorite developer had a hand in it's making? It's kinda magical.
Thanks, this was a great video to remember old times ! I got to play Turbo Graphics 16 at a Demo booth back in '89 when it was released. I got to play for hours, I'll never forget ! Thanks !!!
I was a huge Turbo Graphx fan when I was a kid. I had almost everything for it and when my friends came over to see me playing my Turbo Express they had no Idea what the hell it was. Double Dungeons was like crack to me and my friend, drawing a map out and then going out and rocking ass. Legendary Axe, that Zelda Clone that was awesome, Bonks Adventure, Splatterhouse. I played the shit outta it. That and I watched tv on my Express.
Goodness, Pat, your life experiences usually remind me of mine (every wonderful thing crashes and burns) but I don't think even I had to deal with that sort of shit until at least the fourth grade or so. Plus, you're definitely in better condition here than I was in 2010. You're a real inspiration. :3
I remember my brother got his TurboGrafx 16 for Christmas and he played it all the time. It did last long until the console isn’t working by 1992 where he got the SNES and the Sega Genesis. TurboGrafx 16 was the world’s first 16-bit console before the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo which came out 2 years later in 1991.
Definitely keep up the good work on the reviews... Really enjoyed this a lot... and I know this video is 5 years old, but I'm old school like that.. lol
i love how your parent tried the debate of whether or not to give it to you before christmas or not. like it was even theirs to give you since it came in the mail for you. thats shit my dad used to do
*me screams in obscene gestures and curses some parts of the world* So heartbreaking.... And I agree Pat! It really does boggle me that the Neo Geo and the Turbographix didn't make such an impact here in the US. Life is funny... Happy New Year Pat. 'w' You are up there with the AVGN.
I had the pleasure of playing a Turbografx 16 when I was very young. I don't remember EVER seeing any commercials or anything at retail stores, and now I know why. The way I was able to play it becomes sort of shocking then. I live in a small town in Mississippi, and the only reason I ever even saw one of these was because a local video store owner heard about the system and decided to give it a shot. He let me be the first to rent it, and at NO CHARGE just to get it out there.
I jus love his weird attitude. For people who say he's like the AVGN, he's not. He has own unique comedy in his vids.
jim finn there a difference patt reviews good nes games while avgn reviews evrey bad video game.
Pat has his own niche, but he gave up the review game years ago.
zachary hammersmith u
zachary hammersmith Pat is more wholesome than James Rolfe's AVGN character, Pat doesn't curse nearly as much
Fabian Lopez True
I was really upset and felt like I was having a panic attack. This cheered me up so quickly and I'm grateful. Thank you, Pat.
I like how these early retro videos are a double shot of nostalgia now too the original time they were released as well as the years they reminisce upon, throw Christmas on top of that and they're a recipe for building a great vault of content.
Ty Pat!
Magical Chase did not have a CD case. It came packed in the box with the manual only.
Holy shit!
I like to rewatch this from time to time
Today is my day for absolutely no reason Lol
yeah :)
The power of the TG-16...in the palm of my hand.
Every time I see Pat's NES collection, I smile with a tear in my eye. From one gamer to another... it's just... so beautiful. Pat is also awesome and funny, glad that I subscribed to him!
I felt happy for pat at the end when he got his game even though I know he bought it
Come back to us Pat. This were the good old days.
I still remember the day I clicked on this. I was only 12 years old, I loved Pat so much. I had all the Dvds and merchandise......
Now all he does is a podcast, or does he even still do that?
The "Denise" on the jacket totally looks like it says "Denial"
that's what I thought
You know, I'm not the hugest fan of you Pat, But you set this up so well by the time you opened the Turbo Game, i was crying. Thank you for helping me feel a little holiday cheer.
Pat your just unadulterated awesomeness, when my son is older I'll encourage him to watch your vids (especially flea market madness) you actually leave me smiling after them. Your amazeaballs.
As soon as I heard the music I had to thumbs up this. Classic.
Whenever I watch a Christmas special, I get too excited for Christmas (even when it is August)
Love videos like this. Thanks for not using the term "holiday" instead of Christmas.
1:15
Holy day
it also says christmas in the title :)
Why, does holiday Trigger you?
I went to a retro game store and asked if the guy knew what the turbo graphx 16 is and he didn't know
Beat the shit out of him
I called one today by me where the guy thought Atari & Colecovision was the same thing lol These dudes need history lessons before they're given jobs =P
I was at a video game museum and whilst they had a PC Engine they didn’t have any TurboGrafx 16. Unacceptable.
AVGN's ROB: Skynet
Pat's ROB: Steven Hyde in robot form
To go by other 90s comparison: Turbo Grafx 16 is to ECW what the Sega Genesis is to WCW to what the SNES is to WWF.
Nice one!
Greg Lytle Great analogy yo
Ecw 😂😂 I vaguely remember watching that
Those lights arent necessary. Your collection shines enough already :)
How big was Denise back then if the jacket fits you now???
I assume someone named Denise worked at Turbo Grafix USA back in the day and Pat found it in a thrift store. The story is part of the ongoing saga of his Childhood friend Kevin.
big enough to be fun at parties :(
I guess that the name reminds me of a song by Randy and the Rainbows called “Denise”. Take a listen.

oh gee, this made me cry.. especially that happy facial expression when you were playing magical chase... its like-- many years of pain and finally the best day of your life comes..
Wow, who knew Mike Tyson's greatest weakness was a closing door.
I have to wonder how much Pat actually paid to get Magical Chase because that game goes for insane prices, at least now.
Yeah it's worth a couple of kidneys at least now.
Even the _manual on its own_ will run you 20 bucks.
dude there is an ebay for 1,899$ just(!!!!!!) for the manual...not 20 bucks but almost a 100 times more...
Awesome Christmas special! Happy Holidays, Pat! Damn you, Denise!
I had one of those and I finally gave it to a friend due to being underwhelmed. I enjoyed this trip down memory lane. Thank you!
Gotta love the music samples right from A CHRISTMAS STORY. Lol cracks me up
Hu Flung Dung the best christmas movie
Love the Christmas Story opening.
This is an incredibly accurate video. As a TG16 fan, I thank you, Pat.
I am a very non emotional man and I cried at the part where you got R.O.B's last gift. That was sweet dude.
I just love the intro of this video, makes me feel like it’s Christmas.
TurboGrafx 16 was an interesting system, a friend gave me hers back around 2003 .. I had it for a couple years, collected some games for it on ebay and then sold it. You got christmas spirit when you see this.
Wow! This was one of your best episodes! So personal! And a great ending! Keep it up Pat! :D
And props on all of the research you did to reach the info and conclusion for this video... You're epic man..
Still my favorite pat video and one of my favorite vg videos of all time
Sometimes you just gotta open it just to say "I opened a rare item, and it was GLORIOUS!" It's also just great to play something that no one else has played. One owner, one player. This was an amazing Christmas special!
I remember reading about the Turbo Grafix 16 in comic books but i

informative gaming history revist!
i used to be like, who is this guy on nintendo nerd? and now im like. he is a pretty awesome guy^^
I grew up in Chicago and we had TV ads all the time. Also, they set up a console at my local McDonalds and held tournaments for local kids to enter, to win one. To get kids interested in playing the system.
I like how nice pat sweet guy always looking at the bright side.
And that 1st opening theme...That was so awesome!! Anything from Red and Hudson was just destined to be a hit!
Ohhh the memories of the golden age of gaming!!! Nice vid man!!!
So pumped to finally have a turbo grafx 16! Complete with hidden gem Keith Courage!..... Ok so maybe not a hidden gem
Hey that Genesis game was Eternal Champions, I have that game, one of my favorite fighting games.
@vivelecorn It never did, and please don't spoil the ending in your comments.
Just bought a Turbo Duo R off eBay from Japan. We have a shit ton of games for Turbo Chip and CD but we wrecked our old console and CD port. So excited! It's upgraded with new capacitors and RGB hookup.

Also, I will be watching more Pat episodes now that I see how awesome they are. Thanks Pat!
Pat, I love you.

Pat's game room makes me claustrophobic lol. Avgn's nerd room is so cozy!
Thanks for helping me relive my childhood by reminding me of the excitement of these great systems =D
Thx for your effort. I love TurboGrafx16, especially for Blazing Lazers & their version of R-Type. Well documented and stating their strength was shoot-em-up games. You are clever, a nerd, annoying, and full of information that I like to hear. Keep doing what you do...

I'm sorry but the character design with the revolver as his head, was simply amazing.
Awesome video, man. Highly enjoyed by yours truly.

Not only did R.O.B save video games as we know it. But he's also quite the seasonal giver.
That R.O.B, what a guy.
"I sold one of your kidneys on the black market". HAHAHAHAHA
I would love to see a rerelease of TG16 similar to the rerelease of Neo Geo Gold where the games are stored in a SD card and allow indie developers to make games for it.
By far my favorite review from Pat.
love how the music is from a christmas story, nice touch
Don't worry, Pat. You'll find someoe eventually. Congratulations by the way on finally getting Magical Chase. At least you got one good thing this year! That must've set you back a lot (I don't think you really sold your kidney for it). Still, Happy New Year, Pat, and keep on making videos!

'member berries.
Merry Christmas buddy.
Finally someone showing some love for the Turbografx 16!!
Goodness, Pat, your life experiences usually remind me of mine (every wonderful thing crashes and burns) but I don't think even I had to deal with that sort of shit until at least the fourth grade or so. Plus, you're definitely in better condition here than I was in 2010. You're a real inspiration. :3
LOL i didnt finish the whole video till now, the end had me lol literally
I really liked your story at the beginning of the video :)
I love this.
I've always wanted a TurboGrafx-16.
Magical chase... very appropriate name for the "chase" of tracking down that game.
its a magical chase indeed
Definitely keep up the good work on the reviews... Really enjoyed this a lot... and I know this video is 5 years old, but I'm old school like that.. lol
wow... i've heard about the Turbografx 16, but never knew about what it was capable of... now i know and i will be seeking this console in the future.
Omg the Christmas story beginning song. I'll never get rid of my first red Ryder haha
D00d i had that same stuffed donkey kong as a kid. haven't seen one of those in years
Awesome! Pat saved Christmas entertainment! Very cool.
I had a Turbographx 16 and I remember Bloody Wolf and Bonk's adventure!
@crippledbazooka "Santa, my Fruity Pebbles?!"
Had one of these as a kid, it's a great system. It never got the love it truly deserved (in america anyway).
i love how your parent tried the debate of whether or not to give it to you before christmas or not. like it was even theirs to give you since it came in the mail for you. thats shit my dad used to do
*me screams in obscene gestures and curses some parts of the world*
So heartbreaking....
And I agree Pat! It really does boggle me that the Neo Geo and the Turbographix didn't make such an impact here in the US. Life is funny...
Happy New Year Pat. 'w' You are up there with the AVGN.
Denise must have been a pretty big girl for got a jacket made that fit a grown man.
Lol
***** It's not funny chubby chaser is the #1 problem in America.
LOL good observation
I love every time ROB the robot says something it makes me 😂
I had the pleasure of playing a Turbografx 16 when I was very young. Wow what a great Collection, Pat!
Got a PC Engine/CoreGrafx/TurboGrafx Mini recently. Can't wait to try it out!
Military Madness remindes me of advance wars
Great episode, Pat. Just loved it.
Great system, underrated system...a lot of really fun nights...the turbo controllers were awesome
