You really should stop and do the 26 tracks in order because it's a chronological storyline and the greatest concept album ever bar none.

I've read that Roger Waters' grandfather was killed in WW1 without ever seeing his son (Waters' father). Waters' father was killed in WW2 without ever having seen his son. The reference "Daddy's flown across the ocean" was about his father going to war - specifically the liberation of Italy. This theme was revisited in several songs on the following Pink Floyd album 'The Final Cut'. 'The Wall' is part biographical in nature, and part a fiction conjured from Waters' experiences. Pink - the main character in 'The Wall' - has, as a result of his circumstances , grown up and survived by slowly building a psychological 'wall' around himself. The threat to his health and sanity that ensues is exacerbated by his adult life as a rock star (and I sense a link back to the tragic story of former Pink Floyd band member Syd Barrett, whose demise was, at least partly, the subject of the band's 1975 album 'Wish You Were Here') and the wall is finally completed, resulting in a mental breakdown and repulsive thoughts and deeds.
Growing up during the London Blitz without a father. The serenity of life destroyed by the bombs of war. Ostracized as a youth for being "different", then thrust into the life of a rock star, and all that brings with it. Unable to process it all as an adult, so they wall off from everything until the madness sets in. Watch the movie from this context, it's mind-blowing!

Another great reaction. Understanding how authority (teacher, parent, government) whenever abusive or over the top can harm us (as children or even as adults). Love the sly smile whenever a note, lyric or guitar solo hits and you innately get music talent beyond this world. I hope more of your generation experiences music when people came together as bands playing instruments, writing and singing without computers, auto tune just raw music creativity and craftsmanship. Keep going down the Pink Floyd rabbit hole. It change my life in the late 70’s and early 80’s as a teenager:)

I attended one of the only 6 performances of Pink Floyds' "The Wall" (world tour), on the east coast of the US in 1980, there were only like 12 total concerts of "The Wall" in all of the United States that year.
Pink Floyd usually performed somewhere around 50 or 60 tour dates in the average US leg of a world tour, but because of the massiveness of costs and logistics, they only did 12 dates in 1980 in the US.
The 6 shows on the east coast, where I saw them in February of 1980, was at The Coliseum in Uniondale, Long Island, NY. It was the most incredible, phenomenal performance of any kind, that I've seen in all my 67 years!
i joined the u.s.a.f. at age 17 for six years just to get stationed in the u. k. just so i could see the wall at earls court london in 1980
Not only logistics, the stage was too big for many venues. In Europe it was only performed a handful of times. The band lost a lot of money on it. Ironically, Richard Wright, who had been fired from the band a few years earlier by Waters (because he supposedly didn't contribute enough) was hired back as a 'freelance' musician to play in the show (as his piano/keyboard playing was obviously instrumental in creating the sound of Pink Floyd) and subsequently became the only member of Pink Floyd to make any money from the The Wall live concerts 😂
As we go through life, different events shape us. The Album/Movie The Wall tells the story of a boy who grows up to be completely "Walled off" from the rest of society. Most of the early bricks were not forged by his hand and were outside his control, but what he chose to do with those bricks, what he chose to construct with them was his choice. He started building a wall around himself to protect himself from further pain. As the album progresses he starts forging his own bricks through his own actions which were influenced by how he chose to lay the first bricks. This is a very baseline view of the first few minutes of the album/movie, and it only gets dee[er from there.

The brick in the wall represents him building a wall to protect himself from things that have hurt him in his life.
All those little things that alter our behavior and trust as we grow up, are the proverbial bricks in the wall. Really enjoy watching your journey through this band. They have made such an impact on my life from early on. There is so much more to come. The messages are profound and the music is simply flawless. Enjoy the ride.

Another 1965 born here, elder Gen Xer. The school where this was filmed was the school my sister attended so we had a bit of a connection to the album. Years later I copied the album cover brick for brick onto whole wall of a place I was living…I spent hours getting that font right!
This entire album is a trip. Incredible. And watching The Wall, and listening to the entire album from beginning to end. Hey YOU, and Comfortably Numb.
Us fans understand this album slightly until the film. No problem. You’re figuring out the story at a good pace so far. This album did get released years before So we were guessing also. Think of your views on the plot as wearing sunglasses in a nightclub then, the film reveals much more. I’m impressed with your interpretation. Keep it going.

A "brick in the wall" refers, metaphorically, to building a mental wall to isolate oneself from the pain of the outside world. Every brick represents something to insulate oneself against. Each brick has a reason. When there are enough bricks, you can build a wall with them all.

“The Wall” (the phrase) refers to like our ego and our outer facade we put up to help keep our tender emotions from being hurt. Each brick is syllabic of a life event that makes up your wall. Often those who you are most intimate with are the ones who get to see who you are behind the wall. ❤

I was lucky to see this live in 1980 at Earl's Court in London, only the second concert I had ever attended. Blew my little mind! I don't know how I managed to get tickets for me and my best mate to go, and it was incredible. We had heard the whole albun played on Friday Night late night radio in the UK and we hadn't heard anything like it, yes we had heard Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon etc.. but this was a whole new ball game. Quite literally a musical masterpiece. Shall never forget it. Its a work of genius. So glad you've found it and new generations are being exposed to the raw talent that is Pink Floyd.
Although his dad indeed died in the war, this album is not about war at all (The Final Cut is). It's about how life's circumstances and experiences shape personality (and can lead to really bad things). That's why you need to listen to this album in sequence.

yeah nah pretty much some kids got shity teachers, i was unlucky in that i got a spiteful jealous teacher that loved little girls(even my sister who she just loved, well she hated me because i was open and loving and talked to girls, she hated i was a natural) but hated the odd boy. she admitted in the end, but it stuck with me for my whole life . i also got good teachers, it is what it is, it can suck and it can be great, hopefully most kids from 5 to 12 get decent teachers, this is actually the most crucial time for kids, not after this. when u get into intermediate schooling it isnt a big factor. Basically the deal is a power trip for the teachers.

Like l told you......that is another sicuence of the movie,Pink(kid mean actor of the movie)went in the church and them enjoy playing at Park in that scene he saw a dad taking care for their children and he doesn't have his dad to take care of him.
The Wall was a concept album inspired by the tragic event of their first frontman songwriter Sid Barrett spiraling away into mental illness until he was incapable of functioning at all. His heavy use of LSD ended up being the final bricks in the wall that closed him off completely from everything. The childhood references were drawn from his life but also Roger Waters had to cope with the loss of his Grandfather to the War as well. So the main theme is really about alienation and the self destructive impulse to Wall oneself in.
For the live tour tbey had a crew building a massive wall, brick by brick until the band and stage were obliterated. The chant
'Tear down the wall!!" Near the end was sooo

Pink Floyd is one of the top five bands of all time. When I was your age there was a stereo system called "Quadraphonic". This album was first recorded for listening on a Quad system. As it was I bought this album and a Quad system the same day along with many others from many other bands that recorded in quad for these systems. It was simply awesome to here this alum in quad. Unfortunately they don't record in quad anymore.
Quadraphonic changed my life so much wanted to be an electrical engineer

You should watch Pink Floyds The Wall The Movie. It goes with the album's storyline. It's pretty trippy but so is the album and both are a masterpiece.
Growing up in the 70's and 80's going to school I was told by teachers I should drop out as I'd never be anything. Joke's on them I now make more than they do a year. But not all teachers are like that now day's. I remember getting my hands smacked with a ruler for talking in class cause I was bored and didn't want to be there.

The entire album is actually one story, broken up into songs like chapters of this guys life.
The helicopter at the end of Part 1 was sampled by Kate Bush, David Gilmour’s friend and sort of protege, I’m pretty sure
You are definitely on the right track. The Wall is both protection, and a prison. Eventually it comes down to personal responsibility, and letting peoples offences go, knowing that God
deals with everyone individually. The most vital lesson to learn in life, which Pink is faced with, considering being a kid after WW2, and his father dying in the war. A lot of cynicism.
This album really needs to be heard in its entirety to reach a complete understanding of the story.
The Wall truly is a remarkable album; all members of Pink Floyd were in self-exile in various different countries due to the British taxman. Therefore, this album was recorded in various different countries and multiple studios. Now listen to the album, and consider the over all continuity from track to track. A remarkable achievement.

Waters wrote this from the perspective of the British school system he grew up in (1950's) which by all accounts quite abusive, and yes, the sadistic tendencies that show up in teachers hasn't gone away.
Their lyrics were by Roger Waters. His solo work is also deep, and explores the human condition in all its guises.

Although war is a portion of the wall, the wall is about the character “Pink” descending into psychosis. Every “brick” is every portion of his life building up to complete isolation, surrounded by the wall of his deepest fears and trauma. It is somewhat reflective of one of the main members of the band, Syd Barrett, who completely lost touch with reality and was institutionalized.

This tells the story of the UK Private school of the 50s & 60s
Being melded for the corporate / governmental ladder, being shaped to "fit in"
For a first listen you nailed it pretty well, break the child to conform.
Not just private schools, secondary moderns were for those going into factories etc, grammar schools for civil servants and white collar jobs. All moulded into neat clones and drones.
Since you’re doing Zeppelin and Floyd, you should check out Rush as well.
Before you see the movie "The wall" Please listen to the album first from start to finish or most of it. The movie can get very confusing and is better when you are familiar with the songs and story line.
Please firstly listen to the original album The Wall. You can split your listening on to 4 parts, as they represented on the 4 sides of vinyl disks: 1 - "In The Flesh?" to "Mother"; 2 - "Goodbye Blue Sky" to "Goodbye Cruel World"; 3 - "Hey You" to "Comfortably Numb"; and 4 - "The Show Must Go On" to "Outside The Wall".

The US tour for this album had extremely limited cities, so I was not able to go see them. They came in 1988 I believe but I didn't go see them cuz it was at a stadium and the sound quality would have been really crappy!
I was at the 88 tour in (Wembley stadium) London, the sound quality was the best of any stadium concert I've been to. Speakers front, sides and rear, with delay so that it reinforced rather than muddied it. Wembley wasn't known for great sound, but their engineers knew what they were doing. Been to worse arena gigs for sound.

I believe the brick in the wall metaphor is that the school system is set up to keep us drones to work for the rich. Hence, The kids marching into the hamburger grinder.

When u react to Pink Floyd "Comfortably Numb" please do not do the live version, Pink Floyd is a musical ride, put the album t ur headphones , close u eyes and take that pink floyd ride to this song. a lot of reactors went back and listenedthe studio version and regret doing the live version. @ songs in rock history that the live version does it no justice, Comfortably Numb& Stairway to heaven

Oh yea man my accounting teacher in High School for some reason HATED me & he tortured me EVERY chance he got it was freakin Horrid my Mom even went to go talk to him cuz i would be at home crying cuz i dint get it & when i asked him for help he never gave it to me so my Mom got me 2 freakin tutors NOTHING helped tho & when she was talking to him in front of me being right there he was like "She is just LAZY" OMG my Mom got so freakin mad at him so anyway during the final exam for the class he left the room & EVERYone in the class except for me cheated on the exam & so yep he flunked me & i had to go to summer school & was it for accounting? so i could maaaybe freakin FINALLY learn it? F NO! they made me go to summer school for an "ART" class i was like wtf???? so yea man it def stays with ya cuz typing this now i am getting angry all over again at that horrible lil nothing of an alcoholic dick! & THIS was in a freakin "Private Catholic School" smh anyway just thought i'd share that OH & yea i STILL suck big time at Math ha Pfft
