Great video! I loved how you put both in a positive light for their strengths instead of weaknesses. I was on the fence about getting both, but now I feel good about backing Primal all in! I think that my "light" boss battler will end up being Townsfolk Tussle for something quick to get to the table, and also give new players a taste of what boss battlers are with blowing their minds with something heavy right off the bat. As always, thanks for the info!

As much as I love the MH franchise, Steamforged Games has disappointed me time and time again with their licensed releases. Nice minis (not amazing but nice enough for board game standard) and all, but I fear the design and possibly the rules will be bland like their previous games.
In the end I backed neither but I leaned more heavily toward Primal.

solid video, you hit a lot of good comparisons. one thing that wasn't mentioned that might be important for folks is the cost of entry. primal was a whopping $168 (US) plus shipping to experience anything; with monster hunter world you can buy a decent chunk of gameplay for $70 plus shipping. for folks looking for a more casual experience, or with gaming groups where it'll be difficult to "get your money's worth" of table time for any one game, the much lower price of entry of MHW might be appealing.
i skipped the KS for primal mainly because i don't have the physical room for both, and i knew the monster hunter IP would appeal to a *lot* of my gaming friends so it would hit the table more often. both look like really fun games though. :)

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  3 роки тому +2

Ah yeah price is a great point. All in is fairly comparable but entry is not so good call there!
I had fun with both and was glad to see they weren't carbon copies of each other :)

How about a Legacy Cagematch of Crawlers? Look at existing dungeon crawlers that you can easily find (non-KS) and put them together.
    Descent 2
    Mice & Mystics
    Imperial Assault
    ...
Just to name a few, I am sure you have some in your shelve :)

I was really worried that I was going to regret getting Primal and not waiting for MH:W but now I'm glad I went for it. MH:W doesn't look bad but Primal just seems to fit my playstyle more. Despite only having 4 zones to be in the terrain feels more important and tactical in Primal than MH:W. The cards and combo potential of Primal seem more exciting as well to me (getting a big combo in world is also possible but comes with the downtime as your stamina recovers whereas Primal you can pull off another on your next turn). The reaction system of Primal feels more exciting to me as you have more choice in activating them (if you see a red reaction you can just not play a red card and it won't activate) whereas in MH:W you get a rough idea of who the monster will target but you can't stop it.
One thing that sells me most on Primal is they do have a one shot for most (maybe all?) monsters so you can fight them without having to do a campaign. I know MH:W does have arena quests but, and this is the other drawback, there's less monsters so that would get old quicker.
The biggest downside to Primal is the complexity. When I played the demo I realised I was constantly missing rules because there's so much to remember. This is something that gets easier with more playtime but it does mean when playing with someone new it can be a bit overwhelming. MH:W however does seem far more streamlined and quicker to pick up
In the end I think it comes down to how streamlined you want your experience to be (Primal has a steep uphill learning curve compared to MH:W but does have more depth once you get used to it) and how much you're willing to pay (MH:W has less monsters in the box but has a lower cost of entry)

  • @BeauDiaz

Still watching, but I wanted to comment on Primal’s version of abstracting distance vs Monster Hunters; Primal abstracts the distance for the bow by have a few cards that allows it to target zones that it is not currently in or piercing in general (if a remember correctly). I only played once, but it definitely had that “death by a thousand” discarded cards feel. I am hopeful that the MH Kickstarter reveals more terrain interaction, with the inclusion of Endemic life, like the video game. Great video King! It really helped. 👍🏼

I really like how you highlight the strengths of each game and how they fit different needs. For me Primal is so much more visually appealing but also way more money than I'm willing to spend on another boss battler haha. I'll probably pick up MWH core or one level above that, the gameplay is a lot more appealing to me.

Thanks for this. I was interested in Primal until I saw the board. While it may have deeper mechanics I happen to like moving around on a board. The other thing I’m worried about is that Steamforged does not have the greatest track record with their games so that’s balancing out my love for the MH IP.
But I will say adding a casual boss battler to my collection might be fun. I’ve already got KDM and Oathsworn will show up at some point. Good to have choices.

Appreciate your opinion and make some great points. Monster hunter seems more enjoyable and gna go all in on it. Being a fan of MH since it was released on PSP and just watching it on tabletop and watching the different phases just sticks with the core of the game. You got the Town phase to craft and prepare your next hunt. Then the gathering phase to choose if u go straight to the Monster or take different paths and take risk using time or even getting hurt in exchange for gathering loot for crafting, then the hunting phase and reward phase if successful. Can't tell ya how many times I fought a Rathalos for a 3% chance for a rathalos ruby to make that 1 set of gear. I love that part of MH which steamforge seems to capture it really well in the boardgame. Its almost as the gear you want will dictate what Monster to fight next and if u need lower rank armor in order to kill the tougher monsters so u will adjust ur target. I really don't mind eith what u call a downtime. It's part of the strategy. There is a reason that u need to basically use a turn to reset because u did some heavy hits and need to sharpen ur weapon or used to much stamina to doge or attack. The managing of stamina is key, who to take their turn, when to use potions, face tank a hit, or even feint on purpose to clear ur stamina/sharpen a weap so don't use one of ur turns. Just the seeing and feeling of strategically manipulating to a degree where the Monster will attack and go to next is exciting since I'm not really a big fan of the abstract movement in primal. Great comparison. Just wanted to share some reasons y I'm hype about mh. Man didn't mean it to be a long post.

Another great review seems everyone Online who had both games like primal better... The worst thing is all the things like jumping on monster back it destroying rocks is in the monster hunter video game so why they didn't put it in board game is beyond me. I think out of the two games monster hunter has opportunity to be the better game if they just do some good old fashion copy primal best bits lol... I think they need to ditch some aspects when they are focusing on game and try be more of a board game. I don't want to back it and spend £200 on a board game trying to be a video game when I own the video game. Seems primal focusing more on being a board game and I heard the card game play aspects is really good. I want to get monster hunter as the elder dragon looks sensational but I'm bias I want monster hunter to be better but seem reality is primal is lol.... Well I'm very new to this board game World only found out ppl still play board games recently and it blew my mind with excitement. First game I backed was pursuit of happeninss big box version all in and I brought the game too as Kickstarter come end 2021... Didn't know about boss games till monster hunter came out and I'm annoyed I missed primal Kickstarter. Speaking of pursuit of happeninss did u do a review for that or was that beneath you lol.

Ah you forgot to highlight the IP aspect sufficiently IMO. There are a lot of die hard Monster Hunter fans out there. I would imagine they don‘t really care about the differences and pick the „official“ one straight away. I had that experience with Bloodborne. I couldn‘t care less how the game plays and whether I‘d like it. It was a must have. Your criticism of the MH art is therefore probably the entire opposite for some folks.

Additionally, I already knew that Primal had a whole campaign book with it, but I guess I expected SteamForged to reveal one for MH:W too, since literally every MH game in the franchise has been entirely story-driven... But SteamForged has never ceased to disappoint me, and unfortunately MH:W isn't where they seem to be breaking that streak.

    • @TheKingofAverage
      @TheKingofAverage  2 роки тому

Ah so I didn't respond to this - they are very different games so I think you're good there. KDM is a resource grinding boss battler with crafting, research and a story made through each play through like a rogue like game. It is very involved with lots going on and to keep track of.
Primal is a distilled/streamlined version of this in almost every way. No real grinding the same boss many times but still resource gathering and crafting. The map and abilities are simplified as is the research.
I imagine it'll be quite nice to swap between the two to change things up. Don't want to fight the Antelope for the 5th time in KDM? Break out Primal and enjoy a new fight there. Ready to dive deep on the weekend into optimizing your survivor's kit? KDM has your back.

@23:57 what's funny is while I agree that MHW:TBG's video game art is bad, I also hate Primals art direction and the monster design. Primals is better because because it's not a video game still but just the design.....can't stand it.
I already have Sleeping Gods, and Isofarian Guard is on its way. I just want to do what I do in MHW the video game. I wanna kill monsters. And have ranged attacks actually be ranged attacks. I'm not sad I missed Primal. I am a little sad MHW:TBG's combat will be a little light but that'll probably be fine.
@30:00 Watching further, your point about light not being necessarily bad and will make it easier to get to the table will probably be good for my house. Wasted turns may be a downer, but I'm willing to find out the hard way 😀

Thank you for this, like I said in the MHW video, my son who is 10 has played MHW for two years. It's crazy, he has over 400 hours in that one game and I only let him play 2 days a week for 3 hours a day. I digress, sometimes people like light games not because they LOVE light games but because they like playing a variety of games and , memorizing the rule set of 100+ heavy heavy games is just too much. I'm 100% the rules learner in the family. I would love to play a 4-6 hour beast, but sadly my group is my wife who loves light-med euros, my 10 year old son and my 7 year old son.

Thanks again for another great video. I was going to pass on MHW, but I just noticed that very little from the campaign is KS exclusive, so I'll probably grab it all at retail, which is quite a bit cheaper. Very glad I went all-in with Primal, though.

Great review , i won't go for any of those kick starter and I'll wait the italian localization , just because i'm still a bit confused . I might prefer Primal , I'm not a loot fan , and for what i've seen so far the mechanics are interesting , but at the same time the lightness of MH make it a bit easy to be played by casual players ...I'll let you know . Thanks for your good job

I backed primal at the last minute after all the positive buzz it was getting. My biggest hesitation was that it wasn’t MH and didn’t have the loot system because you’d only fight each monster once but I’m really not looking forward to grind that appears in MHW. Glad I went with Primal.
I figure worst case if I want, after I finish the campaign of primal I’ll just do a end game where I can grind monsters at nausem to craft all the gear I didn’t get to take on the legendary difficulties as if it was Monster Hunter.

I'd like to see a comparison b/w VS System 2PCG and Ashes Rise of the Phoenixborn/Reborn. Both are head to head card games with the LCG format (so no blind boosters).
Or I'd like to see Power Rangers Heroes of the Grid vs Marvel United. Both have miniatures and are hero and card driven with essentially a timer to defeat the chosen boss before it's too late.

Great Cage Match since a lot of gamers are on the fence whether they need both games. I went all in on Primal and was planning on getting 3d piece representations for all terrain effects. That will definitely enchanced Primal even more. Just visualize the plateau or sand terrain etc....it will be awesome.

double standee if that's the case. Since it rotates so much you'd be looking at the side of some cardboard unless it was two pieces like trees and stuff are in games.

MH will be way more expensive if you want to have some variety in the monsters you can fight. The basegame comes with very few bosses for a "boss battler".
It was 70$ for 4 bosses or 140$ for 8 (so 70$ for 4 more bosses) or 17,5$ per Boss. Primal was 170$ for 17 bosses so 10$ per boss.

I know you mentioned that the looting system is better in Monster Hunter, but I would like to hear you on the gear systems of each.
From what I can tell, Primal gears was feeling pretty unique and was kind of giving you a play style to your hunter (not counting the mastery here). How is it in Monster Hunter? Would like to hear on it XD
Btw, I love these Cage match and would love to hear you about Super Fantasy Brawl against other skirmish games.
    Thanks for the video!

Primal looks cool but it also looks very complicated from the play through videos I’ve seen. Can pretty much guarantee I won’t play it right and will be constantly missing different game mechanics bouncing off each other. Think I might late pledge MHW. Appreciate the breakdown of both though, very helpful!

If MHW is that much lighter in combat, then I can't see how it qualifies as a boss battler. Btw, the cage match series are absolutely some of your best. It is because of your AT:O vs. Oathsworn cage match that I decided to go BOTH. LOL. Looking forward to more!

haha sounds like one cost you more and the other might have saved you some :D
Yeah the "advanced AI" part is completely gone out of this one as this doesn't really react to you or your actions in any meaningful way. It just does it's thing and you react to that instead.
At it's heart, this is a gear grind loot driven game.

    • @TheKingofAverage

Yeah so there's no real "end game" like there is in the game really. Just an overall campaign timer. If you reach day 26 and still didn't "beat" the campaign then game over, start again.
You can change the days as you wish for harder or easier times.
