    I wanted to add one point that I forgot in my review. Character differences. While the monsters felt VERY different to me, requiring different styles to address...the characters are a mix. They did feel different to a small degree, but small is the key word. I would love to see them much more differentiated in their feel.

      By similar, do you mean card play (i.e. combo by play a blue then a red etc.) or character function (DPS, Tank, Debufter)?
      As a TCG player, it would be a letdown if most decks/character operate mostly the same

    I tend to lose interest in co-op games after I've beat them, so I gravitate more towards the ones w/ expansions, variable bosses, etc. I'm glad the 2 monsters in the prototype feel distinctly different. That is likely what I'll weigh the most when deciding to back this game. It is a boss battler, so I'm already interested. And the gameplay itself does seem at least interesting (I do enjoy Marvel Champions, tho it isn't mindblowing). But if the 12 monsters give me 12 fairly unique experiences, I think it'll be worth getting for me. Thanks for the video!

    I’m with you Alex, and the term you’re looking for is “meta”. Once you learn a game well enough to know a boss fight, you can prep for it with proper combos and gear choices. While I love that in video games, it’s a poor choice for board games IMO. It becomes too routine and like chess, you can work the moves out in your head and defeat the game without even setting it up.
    That’s when you stop playing and it happens every time for me.

    • @BoardGameCo
      @BoardGameCo  4 роки тому +2

      Yep, this one works for me primarily because every game has been challenging but close. But if you're either expected to lose the first time, or second plays get too easy....that can be a problem.

    • @JodouTR

      @Urek968 4 роки тому

      @@JodouTR Yea but kingdom death is extremely expensive if you didn't get in on the Kickstarter and its constantly sold out. I also don't like the sexual content in kingdom death. I am fine with revealing clothes but penis monsters are not my cup of tea. I would rather just get a game like kingdom death but less expensive and different theme.

    • @JodouTR
      @JodouTR 4 роки тому

    Alright, definitely added to my watchlist. My January interest is in this and Bloodstone, though my discretionary budget will probably only allow me to justify one of the two. Fortunately the campaigns should overlap so I'll be able to compare and contrast the content.
    This definitely sounds interesting given I still don't have a dedicated boss battler in my collection, and the minis look amazing, it'll just be whether that card based combat will gel with my gaming group in this setting.

    I'll probably stick with Marvel Champions and Townsfolk Tussle. My gaming group doesn't have a huge appetite for cooperative boss battle games, so I don't think backing Primal makes sense from economic/shelf space/time perspectives. As someone else mentioned, I might be interested in a standee version that would cut down on the price and shelf space required for the game. Hey Alex, I have a question about the characters feeling "samey" as I've seen multiple reviewers say this. Is it possible they feel this way b/c all the reviewers (including you) are playing the early stages of the game and the characters become more varied after upgrades are built into your deck/character? This is a pretty big deal for me and is so far making me hesitant to back it since Marvel Champions is a similar game and gets character variety down really well, especially if you swap out the various aspects you can customize your deck with.

    • @BoardGameCo
      @BoardGameCo  4 роки тому

      I think marvel champions does it better. There is variety, But it's on the low end. That being said, while your initial deck doesn't feel different you're build definitely will. Swapping out your weapons, equipment, upgrades etc very much does make every single character feel totally different... But it feels more like an evolution of the choices they made rather than the sword guy being that different than the sword and shield guy.

      Heh, seems like I'm not the only one who saw the board thought of DSBG, where the only really fun part were the bossfights (and I do mean, the ONLY fun part about that game). From what I can tell after going through the rulebook pdf in the KS preview, it seems your gear determines your stats and moveset for combat, which seems to lean closer to Bloodborne BG. One major difference is probably that while DSBG goes P1 Enemy P2 Enemy P3 Enemy P4 Enemy... resulting in very little action for each individual player, this game has the monster react to the players' position and actions. It seems to add more reliable strategy/planning as opposed to leaving it to RNG (which rendered DSBG antithetical to its source material). I just hope this game isn't as fidgety as it seems like, without sacrificing actual depth.

    I originally cancelled my pledge for this while the campaign was active. And I just put in a late pledge for the gameplay all-in. Ironically, one of the reasons I backed out of it originally was because the Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood campaign just closed and I was avoided more campaign games... and I just cancelled that pledge a couple weeks ago. I essentially swapped out Oathsworn for Primal and I think it was the right decision.

    I will get a lot of dislikes for this comment but here it goes ...
    The game would be exactly the same tactical experience if you remove the minis and replace them with chess pieces, beans, buttons etc.
    I love minis in the games. This game has some fantastic minis but i can't shake the feeling they're not necessary. City building phase is already abstracted so the combat may as well be.
    Ask yourselves - would you back this game if there were standees instead of minis!

    I felt we played two different games you and me, I found Primal very lacking on choices and movement, and getting punished for every attack instead of you reacting to the monster makes it feel weird, basically the optimal way to fight is to lame it out, very slowly, soo you always have a defensive move cover your small HP pool from the punish you get from every attack you do.
