My hair went from a super short Halle Berry like pixie to shoulder length in less than a year and one of the key things I did was protective styling. Our hair needs to be left alone as it can be too fragile to handle daily manipulation.

My hair grew when I did cornrows under my wigs without braiding hair. I did it for almost a year and I left the braids in 2 to 3 months at a time. It worked. Make sure like Tamika said moisturize your hair during the protective style.

Most people's hair never seems to grow to change length because it's breaking off from overstyling tight styles constantly, wigs, gels things that damage hair follicles overprocessing from heat and chemicals so many factors that many people do every day and week.

Sadly it does. I can tell from the edges. Gel helps you keep your hair in tension styles that pull hair out from the roots.

My hair grew the fastest this year when I actually gave up on “protective styling” which was added hair in braids or twists. The synthetic hair was chewing my hair up and its moisture. I primarily rock my hair in high puffs or twists (no added hair) now the crown of my head now reaches my back without heat stretching. I keep my routine simple by not touching my hair after styling. I took your advice on Joico and love the Hydrator product. I use it constantly bc it is easy to get and easily sinks into my hair without doing too much.

That's what I think I'm experiencing, I noticed when I used to just straighten my hair and left it alone straight it grew more than having added weave braided in.
I think it makes a lot of sense, especially when you consider how much buildup occurs from certain "protective styles". The sad thing about it though is braids do help my curl pattern, but don't help with growth whereas straightening grows it however damages my curl pattern till it get brittle. 😟

@@kensigregory361 It's really a catch 22 like you gotta give up texture or length. Another possible thing to do is wear natural styles like mini twists, etc. but I feel like it gets fuzzy a couple days in which is exhausting to do. One thing I'm currently looking into is a keratin treatment

Soft locs are a great protective style. I love it because the older it gets the more better it looks to me ( looks like real dreads of course my roots aren’t locking up but the new growth is beautiful ) . I have a weekly wash routine. And a protein treatment every 2 weeks, soon I will go monthly. This style is great especially if you are on the go or if you have anxiety and depression. Doing your hair when your not in the best mental health can be very overwhelming. Also don’t forget to take quality multivitamins, water, good diet, and exercise. Great video.

I'm for protective styles but only with my own hair. The point of growing and caring for my hair is to utilize what is on my head. My problem is my fine type 4a hair splits and yes I do get frequent trims, every three months. I am retaining some length but it just seems harder because my hair is so fine and fragile. Surprisingly my holy grail is SheaMoisture Moisture Retention conditioner, I use it as a leave-in and a detangler before wash day. i hate the smell but oh my.. my hair loves it! and i pair it with eco styler (argon oil). its been a year and a half and trim my self and i braid/twist my hair weekly and my hair is to my butt already! 3c-4a texture is definitely possible for all of us to do it! We just need to learn to care and be gentle with our hair.

      Have you tried olaplex?
      It's good for breakage.
Anyway, all your hair needs is a few spritzes of water on the scalp daily. Careful detangling during washdays is also underrated. That's when people break off their ends. I use to be real cheap with detanglers, but now I use my best conditioner for it.

I disagree with the trimming more. How are you going to retain length when you are cutting your hair every 3 to 4 months?.My grandmother would wash her hair, grease it with royal crown and plait it up and she had plants hanging to her waist. She never went to a beautyshop to get " regular trims". Her hair retained length and grew just fine. Nor did it split up the hair shaft.
I flow her regimen and I gave retained length and grown my hair to past shoulder length from a big chop in barely 4 years. I stay out of salons and do my own hair. My personal experience is that salons are scissor happy. I don't need or desire to get regular trims in order to grow my hair.

no offense, but... the average person grows 6" per year, and the average black person specifically grows 5" per year. In 4 years a person should have 20" or 24" of new growth, which is mid back or waist length. It seems you may still have breakage issues :(

Also try conditioning with herbal essence hello hydration until the dryness is tamed.👌🏾

Could wash and go’s be considered a protective style? I have heard of them sometimes being considered as that but I do wash and go’s all the time to my hair now that is how I keep it these days

    • @SimplyTamika
      @SimplyTamika  2 роки тому +1

In my experience with clients who regularly wore wash and goes, the style would give the appearance of health but when their hair was blown out, there was always evidence of splits and damage that could not be seen in the curly state. Wash and goes are great because they are styles that are non manipulation but you must watch your hair carefully if you wear them regularly to avoid damage especially to the ends of your hair. Wash and goes do not protect the hair from the elements and touching so maybe it can be considered semi-protective.
