- Biréli Lagrène has visited my GypsyGuitarAcademy studio again and we recorded this tune called "Smile". Smile is a beautiful harmonic ballad and was originally composed by Charlie Chaplin.
We just updated his full guest lesson at my online class including an extended interview & unreleased tracks.

Charlie Chaplin's - Smile // Joscho Stephan feat. Bireli Lagrene
Im in the getto, watching people doing stuff living their lives. Today there is a sun. And it brings this unusual collective smile upon here. Somebody doing heroin, Somebody starts his day whit alcohol.I see older women face in the sun big smile on her face.Shes happy and it makes me happy, make me smile. This is my home, and this is the soundtrack of this moment. Spring is coming in my soul and heart. Music dont watch color of your skin, the money in the bank. And when it hits you. You feel okay! Much love!
Like this music, your attitude and outlook are golden. Love how you put that, folks. Stay blessed and consider writing a book. You're a good writer to me . 1 more, next time you decide to play some music as a soundtrack to life put on that EWF "that's the way of the world" my spirit told me to tell your good spirit that.
Birelli nailed it. Less is oft times more. Joscho is technically so gifted but sometimes it’s just too much.
Same as cooking. Keep it simple. Minimal ingredients. Quality.
Just brilliant.
no words, quiet room, eyes closed, heavenly harmonics, happy happy ears.... ahhh,,,,, of course!!! it's friday, yes, friday.....
😏
Birelli looks like he is constantly somewhat unsatisfied with the notes he plays, well we disagree...what a treasure for all guitarists.
Wärmt das Herz. In Zeiten wie diesen so wichtig! Danke an Euch alle.
Absolutely love this performance. Whenever I feel like giving up guitar, and a couple other instruments, I listen to this... again. Smile.
So hört sich an wenn man gleichzeitig weinen und lachen möchte. ❤👏👏
Surprenant de voir Bireli ne faire que le thème humblement mais magistralement! On sent Joscho hyper focus, avec un soli très inspiré et de toute beauté!!
It’s hard not to cry with tears of joy with this version of Smile .
Thank God for such expressive instruments played by such expressive musicians!!
Another beautiful performance.
In an age of aesthetic nihilism and aggressive ugliness, an apolitical affirmation of beauty almost becomes a revolutionary act. Just by having a good time, respecting each other, and embracing their art, these men are doing more than they realize to enhance the well-being of others.
The idea of aesthetic nihilism is an interesting take on what we’re experiencing. Would have never thought to combine those words.
It's also an age of overthinking.
@@nomnom112 I’ll have to think about that 🧐
you may be gay
@@antoniogremmis says " you may be gay ".
An old Mexican proverb says, "It's a hungry man, who has bread on his mind"
I love it! I thought that Biréli was going to improvise on the theme (as it is his habit) whereas there it is Joscho who does it, with brilliance. Bravo to both of them! 👏👏👏
Thank you Joscho for getting Bireli again as you do from time to time. It seems like you 2 get along pretty good. I like how Bireli attitude isn’t to be the most perfect player. He plays with feel and in the moment without too much thinking, sometimes he’s a bit a sloppy for a note or 2, but that’s what i like about it, to just enjoy it more than putting on the most perfect display you possibly can. Bireli should be higher up in France’s well knows musicians, i know it’s more niche than popular music, obviously, but the career he’s had so far, is incredible.
Thank you) Played along with your performance on drums at home, so relaxing. Thank you for the chance to interact with beautiful music.
It is a wonderful world with you both, thank you so much for your spirits and feelings, Joscho and Bireli.
Thank you Joscho, you're the best... But Birelli is over the best...!
beautifull melody great vibe thank you Bireli and Joscho you are the 2 greatest guitarist of our time. Love you!

Joscho playing with great sensitivity
Does anyone know the guitar Bireli is playing here?
Jean Barault I think.
Сколько нужно написать слов что бы ютуб продвигал видео???
Not quite clear for me, does fastest fingers technique makes best musical composition, or it is only proving to those who you invited (and UA-cam viewers) that you are the king and another one just a guitar player, some sort. Like Tommy did it to other players, and then Joscho did it to him, and some day somebody will do it to Joscho. First you learn how to beat others on your way to Olimp and then you learn to make good music. Everything in good time.
I recently read a somewhat related but not identical criticism directed at the Hannover Jazz Club improv performance of Autumn Leaves; done with L[a]grene and titled on UA-cam as "Mystic Improvisation with Joscho ..." from two years ago. I'll issue the same friendly challenge to you as I did to the critic who thought that the melodic thread was lost there. And that is, to start the tune playing, and then minimize the window or ignore the visual, just as if you are listening to a radio or some other media. Now, I think that you have an in-principle sound point with regard to looking askance at guitar acrobats. But when rapid arpeggios are suitable given the overall tempo, or a run can be more fully developed if only the guitarist has the technical adroitness, then in my opinion it only adds to the performance. There are only so many who can pull it off successfully, which is to say melodically. Which is part of what made Django a true great: he was fearless in launching off, yet always seemingly landed his runs on the right note. Yeah there are a number of renowned Gypsy Jazz and other acoustic guitar players who for my money are occasionally speeding down the frantic-track you describe. But I don't think that that criticism of speed for speed's sake alone applies to Stephan and L[a]grene in general, any more than it did in the case of that famous impromptu performance of "Caravan" by at the Woodstock Wisconsin Luthier convention "Frank Vignola, Julian Lage & Vinnie Raniola play "Caravan" at Woodstock Show" Check it out. When I first saw it I thought Julian Lage was some college kid clowning on stage with Frank. Then a few moments later I realized better.
@@NorthCharlton There is always "yes, but", explanation and exceptions. Watch any guitar player solo and then watch how they play duet. It is always more about personal competition then musical composition. And then you can watch Joshua playing with a woman, don't remember her name. Completely different play. I like music and hate competitions. It's bad for both, composition and personal impression.
@@konsheyn Try the two videos, I mentioned. I think that you will see genuine simpatico at work there. Now as for Tommy E. and Stochelo R., well, I recognize their talent and like some of their work, and will leave it at that
