I often think about the brilliant writing advice the creators of South Park gave to students at NYU: _“If the words 'and then' belong between those beats … you've got something pretty boring. What should happen, between every beat that you've written down, is either the word 'therefore' or 'but' … that gives you your causation.”_ So much of Disney's Star Wars is just "and then".

The creators of this show absolutely want to subvert the Star Wars lore. They want to change it that it can transmit their own message to the world. It starts with KK with her message "The force is feminin" -- it just says everything. She wants to transport her feminism and rule out masculin influences.
Also the showrunner (what was her name again) -- she openly admitted that with the 6th episode she realized some kind of teenage dream of herself. That is what has become of Star Wars now: Hacks abuse Star Wars to realize their own infantile dreams.
But it even gets worse, when there are clear indications, that one of the messages the creators want to spread is: "Good and evil is a matter of perspective" for this message, they destroy the reputation of the Jedi. It seems they want to compasre the Jedi with the catolic church, which allegedly persecuted the witches in the Middle Ages to preserve masculine power. An idea, that is promoted by witches themselves and some other people but that is not proven, but just a modern accusation. Besides the question about the catolic church, the Jedi should not be abused here to spread an idea that goes against everything that comprises Star Wars and that is fundamental to our civilization.

    The Ballsackolyte.
In a blue lagoon filled with frigid waterfalls,
Swam a naked, dark jedi, with shrinking balls.
They danced on the surface, weightless and spry,
Soggy and shrivelled, like a pea in the sky.
With a twirl and a whirl, they banged with a bounce,
Reylo fans, were thirsty and waited to pounce.
A marvel to see, two force sensitive spheres,
Their secrets revealed as Osha hungrily peers.
He is the Ballsackolyte, a handsome dark knight
His helmet keeps his identity locked tight
The naked sith lord, with luminous balls
A Darthmaul clone, minus facepaint, horns and overalls.

This is a very thoughtful and compelling UA-cam essay on the failings of “The Acolyte.” Not only is there no emotional connection to the source material and the lore, but the show is oddly joyless and grim. (“Unknown Planet.”) It also seems to be disconnected from established fundamentals of screenwriting, as set out by Syd Field and Robert McKee. (Did the show creators dismiss those how-to authors’ guides by arguing that they too were patriarchal? Is having a screenplay and a lead character arc follow basic principles of TV show pacing and creating any rooting interest just a “nice-to-have” these days?)

Screenwriting 101: "Don't have the screen character tell the movie viewers what they already know."
Ep. 5: (Yord to Osha), "Jecki is a Jedi. She can take care of herself."
    This is superfluous writing.
Since Ep. 1, we, the viewers, know that Jecki is a Jedi. Even worse, Yord is telling Osha (who he knows since the time of Ep. 2) that she knows that. And also, Osha herself was a Jedi trainee together with Yord back in the day.
It is enough to write the dialogue as: "She can take care of herself. Let's go!"

Exactly, no Dark Side Force user is "unarmed" Force Freeze, Force Choke, Force Stasis, Mind Probe among others such as Force Push. All can be used to kill, incapacitate or injure. Jedi are also not "unarmed" without a physical weapon although their abilities are more inclined towards the non-violent. Of course Sol would know about Dark Side abilities. His statement about "not attacking the unarmed" is absolutely ridiculous in the face of a POWERFUL Dark Side user.

Starting with the “Attack me…with all your strength!” Was absolutely ridiculous. This show comes off so cheap & tacky.. It's not just the terrible writing & terrible acting. The whole thing is a complete self centered power trip.. It's horrible set design, horrible world building, horrible camera work. It all makes this show feel so small. Like it's filmed in a single green screen room.. Grasping at awful CGI techniques to try and force any bit of a false reality into this mess of a show.
It's so far from Legitimate Star wars movies that it feels as if this whole thing is a big parody.. A very expensive parody..
These people have proven they are only capable of writing narcissistic stories that self insert themselves and their own beliefs into anything they do. Even if they get to make something from a pre-existing beloved story, they cannot help themselves. They seem to be incapable of creating artistic creations that stray away from their own personal perspective, instead of showing they can lean heavily into escapism and pure storytelling.. They have proven time and time again that they are not capable of doing anything even remotely close to that.. (which is weird because that should be one of the most important attributes that a director or a developer or an actor has in order to be successful at their job....?)
How is there no one that will fire these people who openly hate the fans, hate the consumers who made their success in the first place.. These people who actively act like aggressive victims while also being a million times richer than anyone else. Yes they are the victims.. Poor them.. How can they afford to exist.. Compared to "The Acolyte" If you go back & watch "X-Men the Animated series" It was so well crafted. The story of the struggles of mutants having to deal with humanity was such a universally relatable storyline. Media back then was not afraid to face difficult topics head on. They found really unique ways to abstractly teach people life lessons. They touched on difficult situations & found intelligent ways to convey certain stories. Even when I was all grown up & rewatched it, it really felt like the story is crafted so well & executed at such a high level that anyone is capable of relating to it in someway or another. It's stuff like that, that we are deeply lacking nowadays. So much so that literal kid's cartoons from the 90's told deeper and more mature stories than most media nowadays.
Stuff used to take pride in who can find the most creative ways to convey certain things. Who can give the audience certain feelings without overly explaining it.
It used to not matter what kind of character, creature, species they were. What matters is that they found ways to convey artistic depictions of the Human condition. Creative ways that can connect us on a deeper level.
This stuff we are seeing across the board when it comes to video games or different kinds of media really seems like we are seeing a horrible outcome of a awful trend where people keep getting positions, who in no way deserve those positions. It doesn't seem these people are hired based off of their talent or skill..? We are seeing very expensive shows, games, movies, with such terrible writing. Awful world design, character development, poor aesthetics. So much right now just feels overall creatively bankrupt and I really hope we all snap the f*ck out of it and get back to making better things. Better games better shows better movies

Your comment about "Harlequin romance" triggered a train of thought (which very likely has been said by someone else before, but…), which is that this CW-esque writing and a story that feels like a telenovela is an attempt to bring in "normies". But why, there always have been and will always be sci-fi nerds. We like a level of cheese in SW, sure, but the story is rooted in adventure and intrigue. I'm a OT kid, but loved the prequels for being even more SW. Was the pacing and story beats badly done, yes. Plenty of cheesy dialogue, for sure🎉. This is on George for not having people around him to keep this stuff in check. But it was still Lucas's SW. Could story and writing been better, absolutely.
This, this is CW level writing, overloaded with overt signalling. In different hands, this story and these characters could absolutely work. But you need better, more experienced writers and a more experienced production team.
The counterpoint to the Acolyte is Andor. Written by competent writers, and produced by an experienced team. Does it fit in the "traditional" mold of SW, no. Can it fit in the SW universe, though? Absolutely. It covers new ground in the universe and adds a level of complexity and maturity to the original trilogy.
Ugh, anyway, I'm rambling. My point is, stop trying to "bring in" normies with these crap stories and stick to what works. First two seasons of Mando did this as well, minimal Jedi involved in that too. Oh, and look, it was a success!
Keep the lifelong fans and then expand out with other shows that appeal to the younger generations. Part of SW problem is that the movies are old. Disney just needed to keep the universe relevant with new content that respects the old. Ideally you produce shows that bring the old fanbase along, and draws in new potential fans as well. What happens? Those new fans then go back and watch the "old" stuff and.become fans of that too! You now have two generational groups, invested in both old and new content, and the money prints itself. Repeat as the generations continue. Anyway, I'm feeling I'll over the loss of what could have been. 😢
    Cheers and thanks Elaine!

One of the things I don't understand is how, LH has gone on record saying how "Star Wars saved her life." and suddenly now, she is getting defensive when people are criticising this, going why are people taking it too seriously?
If a piece of fiction saved your live and someone else comes along and ruins it, you wouldn't get offended by that?

The fact that this much money is spent on projects that are approved and scripts are finalized tells me that LF has purged any actual talent or anyone that says no. Once LF was the top tier talent hiring entertainment business including ILM, Lucas Games etc and now its all about diversity over talent. This is what you get when you give out participation trophies and not hire actual talent. SW was once event watching now its bad TV made for CW. What else is left to ruin KK, you have disappeared Willow, created the largest flop ever in IJ film history and in less than 15 years ruined and alienated a baked in fanbase from a franchise I would have still supported for 40 more years but Im turned off by what SW has become. Im not excited to see what comes next and personally think the Mando movie looks desperate and several years too late, Rey movie why and after the Acolyte who wants to see Dawn of the Jedi? Gross Disney LF clean house and hire actual talent not full grown adults writing fantasy in their Trapper Keepers.

This show is bad on pretty much every level, but I think that it's greatest sin is its utter lack of humanity. It's not even that it botches all the emotional beats, it basically doesn't have any. The only character that barely passes as a human is Sol and that's arguably more the actor being good than the script actually doing some work. Everything else is completely emotionless and sterile. The writing, the characters, the dialogue, the acting. All the inconsistencies just amplify the issue. Even in fan faction you need to look hard to find something so bad.

Disney+ shows lack basic proper pacing. They have not mastered the (unfortunate) modern way of doing a tv show. 6-8 episodes? Really? I mean the BBC is famous for that format but each show is a gem!!! Star Wars series should be classic: each episode is a self contained hour long story. Yea have an overarching arc, but each episode should be paced with a one hour story in mind, like classic Star Trek and NG shows. Star Wars could be great. It should be great. But unfortunately George amateurs ARE in charge of the magic.

Hearing you analyze the episode made me really think about it. You're right, the writing is bad, much of the character actions/dynamics don't make a lot of sense. I have a strong suspicion that even if the writers aren't very good, it might be Headland herself interfering with the process and forcing them to produced this garbage. It seems like something that she and Ms. Kennedy would do (probably have done all along).
I really don't know why they have been allowed to operate like this for so long. I guess Disney doesn't mind losing money, or perhaps there' something else going on behind the scenes. Smells like Blackmail mixed with sheer cowardice and incompetency. And as for the " Overly Large Budget", I'd be willing to bet that it's bloated due to very bad planning coupled with poor day to day decisions by "Management". Of course I don't know, but in situations like that, some of the "Budget" probably ends up in somebody's pocket. Just sayin.
    Great video.

    Spoilers for the plagueis novel:
In the plagueis novel, Palpatine kills his entire family and plagueis is like, that’s great. Good job. He and Sidious go to a planet whose inhabitants worship them as a cargo cult and disembowel one of them and EAT THEIR HEART. And plagueis says literally that they should see everyone else but the sith as lesser beings and mere tools and stepping stones to their own ends.
How can there be “no good or evil” in that situation? Every culture in history would say that killing one’s entire family is wrong. Maybe a few extremists might disagree, but by and large, it’s just human nature to know that the sith are wrong. There are situations in life where it is nuanced, but “are the sith evil” is not one of them.

Edit: Also, agreed on Ventress. She was awesome. A wasted character, imo. She would've made a much more interesting series than Ahsoka...maybe not with these writers though.

    Hello? This is intentional.

I think the problem she is referring to is the use of out-of-place modern vernacular in a fairy tale setting. The characters shouldn't sound like they're in 2024 LA. Disney SW has done this a few times I can think of and it always seems off. You response makes me think you haven't properly understood the criticism.

@@hitoshijohnson The Jedi Order is being depicted as an authoritative institution, analogous to a modern police force. Clearly. I don't see any way to match your interpretation with what we've been shown on screen.
SW's connection to fairy tales and mythology is thematic; the characters don't actually speak like they are in Nottingham.

    • @hitoshijohnson
      @hitoshijohnson Місяць тому

@@hoos3014 I listened to the video again and, it doesn't make a difference to the criticism if the language is intentional to serve some allegorical purpose or not (I mean, we get it). I think the point she was making is that it breaks immersion for the Jedi to be using the same vernacular as people on a reality show in the 21st century. SW has (had) gone to great lengths to not include things from everyday life detract from what is essentially a fable. That's why SW characters rarely use idioms or slang and when they do it's usually made up stuff like "nerf-herder" and not "sitting ducks" or "see you in hell" which sounded out of place when they were uttered. Also Nottingham is a real place that exists in 2024.
