Geddy and Alex were already working on creating more complex and progressive music when they split with Rutsey. (John was a more basic 4 on the floor type of drummer, as you noticed.)
This was Neil's 'audition' song- the pieces of it Geddy and Alex had written so far. Geddy said Neil just blew them away with triplets and effortless time signatures changes and that he knew "this was our guy!"
Neil was definitely the missing piece of the Rush puzzle. Their individual skills just meshed and complemented each other incredibly well, creating a whole greater than the sun of its parts.
During Neil’s audition, they threw
this song they were working on at
him… the rest, they say, is history.
Geddy's bass is just awesome on this track.
The critics absolutely hated Rush!
I think with Neil being a better drummer this allowed Geddy and Alex to expand more on their playing as well. Thanks for my morning Rush
Cheers
Let the haters hate. You tubers keep reviewing them just because our Rush nation is strong and they know they will get subscribers then they cast them aside when they become successful.Seen it a lot. There are few that truly appreciate their talent and complexity in music and lyrics. I equate them almost to classical composers.
@@generoberts9151 You are absolutely right! I have seen the same thing.
Hello Peart, bye bye Bonham.
Geddy is a Beast ! Singing lead and playing "all over the neck" Bass runs... man o man .. The Best !
I think Neil allowed Alex & Geddy to grow musically in ways that continuing with Rutsey wouldn’t have. As I said before, this album starts to see them building an identity, even if they’re still wearing some of their influences on their sleeves at times. It’s a fantastic second album, even if a little uneven. Glad you’re enjoying this adventure!
Yes! 🔥
Really loving this run-through of the discography! This song is 🔥. I’m a hack guitar player, and this song really showcases a stylistic change in Alex’s playing from the first album for me. It continues to evolve all the way to the end of their careers. His style changes every album, and there’s not enough love thrown his way on that point. I’ll be the one who says it 😁. Can’t wait for 12:00! Thanks
Man, Neil steps right in and announces I'M THE NEW DRUMMER! And I kick ass! Love this song! Mix is a lot better on this one. Geddy's bass sounds real good. Alex with the wah-pedal!
To Quote the great Gene Simmons, “ the only band that sounds like Rush is Rush”
One of my all time favorite bands.
I never listen to critics, and what they have to say, they never know what the hell they are talking about!!!
They are the pretentious ones.
And as much as I liked the first album, Rutsey was a good solid serviceable drummer, but more of a straight ahead rock drummer, I think if they would of stayed with him, their sound sound would not have progressed to what it became and probably would have fell into obscurity.
RIP professor 🙏🥁
Cool reactions 🤘
One hell of a song, one hell of an album! Neil certainly drove them in the right direction.. So the greatness begins..
Fly by Night was the first album that I owned and my introduction of Rush. It was a Christmas gift from a very cool Aunt. It got played to death and I’m still not sure how I didn’t blow up my Dads speakers LOL. I absolutely love this track to this day.
Saw RUSH in a holiday spectacular
RUSH/REO SPEEDWAGON/ MOUNTAIN/TED NUGENT AND BLUE OYSTER CULT in 1975 as a 15 year old teenager as my first general admission concert at the old CAPITOL CENTRE in LARGO MARYLAND ! This is the song that they opened up with
Been a huge fan ever since !
Quantum leap forward in drumming, but perhaps more importantly the lyrics are so far beyond what other hard rock bands were offering. I've always considered "Anthem" the first great *Rush* song.
Interesting note. This song is what they introduced to Neil at his audition. It was said that he nailed it on spot. So when Geddy says he was all smiles during the audition , and had already decided on Neil without hearing the rest of the auditioners,. This is why.
The jump in experience here is already huge. Neil Peart seems to me already very determined and aware at every touch. And his composition ideas would already begin to sprout like water in the spring thaw. Indeed, in Fly By Night, the owl reaches the long-awaited first flight into eternity. Rush is one of my greatest prides in this earthly existence. 🦉🌟 🇧🇷
Once again thank you for doing this
"I can't imagine what empty heads can achieve," Ozzy...Reminds me of the definition of a teacher, right...those who can, artists; those who can't, critics. Don't hear the comparison between Getty and Robert Plant...doesn't matter....both were pioneers in their genres....Wish I could convey how Rush impacted us then...life changing like when I first heard Zep or Van Halen! Cool shirt J! Peace!
Now the magic truly begins, what an intro to Neil!!👍🔥🤘🏻🎧
this album is great!
I remember reading that Alex used a Super Reverb for quite a bit of this album
Great reaction, dude! What a difference! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
Yep the Zep similarity is already fading fast on this album. Now they not only have a tons better drummer but a lyricist too!!
Something to keep in mind while analyzing this album is that "Best I Can" and "In the End" were written while John Rutsy was still in the band. So those two songs are sort of "first album songs" played by Neil.
That makes sense as you’ll hear from my commentary on Best I Can i guesses that was the case.
Even though you reacted another time to this, its cool to see from the perspective of where it lies in their discography. After their first record, and its a pretty good intro to Neil.
The "live" video of this you reacted to was NOT a live recording. They were "lip syncing" to this studio version.
Rush's record company wanted to turn them into a Bad Company style of rock and roll band. They said no. And then went their own direction. 😎🎸👌
Welcome Neil Peart, the professor on the drum kit
Love your channel man ! Enjoying your Rush journey. Beginning, middle and the end I love this band! Of course there are some albums of theirs I like more than other’s but wow what a career I just wish I could’ve gone to see them more.
What do the critics know, most of them couldn't tell talent if it bit them on the arse.
When a teen I played this album to death and still love it no matter who likes it Rush you or anyone it Rocks!I never really play it in decades but still love it !It's different !I saw Rush before they had any albums out there where 3 bands Rush ..Mahogany Rush and BullRush! I was a small boy 😆! COULDN'T HEAR FOR 2 DAYS WAS SO LOUD NOR MAKE OUT ANY THE MUSIC HEEAnthem Rocks doesn't it!
Feels great to start a new week with a new album. Especially, now introducing Neil into the mix. I like this track and consider it to be a standout on this album. Good riffs composition, lyrics, and drumming. Thanks for keeping the Rush train rolling.
Hell of an opener for the album. Man, Neil announces his presence immediately. I think it's great you've warmed up to Geddy's vocals. I know that was originally a detracting factor, like it was for many, but man he belts it out here and is always in tune. Looking forward to the next one!
It was certainly a huge step up both lyrically and drumming and i think that did inspire Alex and Geddy. Great opener. I knew I was very happy when I first spun this album.
This will eventually be a playlist song for you....I predict. ...where I'm coming from is in your analysis, it's the beginning of the real Rush....the very beginning.
😎
Primus did a cover of Anthem with Danny Carey from tool on drums
You can definitely feel the energy level is way higher on this opening track compared to the debut album. I think Neil's ability to add to the melody with his innovative and propulsive fills was a huge part of that energy lift.
Even though this was Neil's first record with the band, the interplay between Neil and Geddy is SO TIGHT. They are so in synch. Also, this was the first album they fully recorded with Terry Brown and I think he gets some credit for making their songs sound more mature. Some people will argue that the best years of Rush were when Terry Brown was a partner.
One of my favorite Rush Albums. These young Rush fans have no clue. They think Rush started with Moving Pictures.
I was introduced to Rush in 1991. Immediately loved the band and inundated myself with their music. Even then, the debut album did not appeal to me compared to the rest of their catalog at the time. What drew me to Rush was the lyrics and the musicianship. The debut lacked. Although I love and respect Alex and Geddy, Neil has always been the one for me. This album is where Rush started in my mind. Great opening song.
Thanks for this reaction and for deciding to journey through Rush album by album. You will enjoy this ride!
Not much to say that hasn't been said here already, solid reaction as always. Nice observation on the dynamics during the verses. Cheers!
This was the album I was introduced to Rush back in the day. So it's got that special aspect to it. As always, appreciate your work, as I'm sure many do.
Yeah , Neil makes an automatic difference. Geddy said when Neil came to audition., he showed in a pacer and had his drums packed in trash cans. And after he set em up, he looked kinds goofy because he looked to big for the set. Bcuz Neil was pretty tall he was like 6'3 or 6'4 He started playing and Geddy was already liking but Alex wasn't feeling it. But then Geddy had some stuff that Rutsey didn't ever want to play. And he said he just kinda went right into it and Neil was right there with him didn't miss a lick . Which kinda won Alex over a little. And then they listened to one more drummer but Geddy had pretty much already chosen Neil. And after the other guy time was catching up to them . Bcuz they were already booked with kiss. So Geddy pretty much talked Alex into going with Neil. And the rest is history. Of course Alex grew to love Neil and couldn't imagine another drummer sitting back there.
This was from Neil's "Ayn Rand" phase. Thankfully he outgrew it somewhat. 😀
You aren't the first to say that Geddy's voice sounded like Robert Plant. Except for the range of their voices........I just don't hear it. But it's cool to hear another musician's opinion of their music.
Me too. I don’t see much of a resemblance in Plant. Same with Alex. Page’s style is way different than Lifeson’s. The only thing close is the riffs but a lot of 70s bands had similar style riffs back then.
All I need to hear was Ooohhh yeah. Oooohh yeah. Just like Plant. Rest of vocals not so much.
When Alex sounds sloppy it sounds like Page.
@@JustinPanariello You will hear very little sloppy from Alex going forward. He makes great use of arpeggios and harmonics. I don’t get it though. Lived the start of Zeppelin and Rush and never saw much of a comparison cept maybe the first album only because that one was more rhythm and bluesy. Zeppelin was really that way. But voice and playing comparisons? Not at all.
Btw By-Tor is the bomb. Peart will blow you away.
Also it’s By Tor , not “biter” although you got the origin of the name. Check out the back story
Looks like I got lots of reviews to watch ! lol
For 1975, this was a heavy, heavy track. Probably only Black Sabbath was making heavier music - or Judas Priest if they’d put an album out at this point (not sure). All 3 are just monsters on this track. This song was a shock to behold in that day and age and a real divider- you either loved it or hated it - there was nothing in between. Well…between comes on the next track - take a breath, you’ll need it! 🔥✌🏼😂🤘🏼
😄 Yeah, you can tell within the first 5 seconds that this is not John Rutsey on the drum kit! (No disrespect to JR intended). I had to laugh when you mentioned that Neil Peart was the 4th of 5 drummers that auditioned for the band, Really! Why would they look at anyone else after NP?😂 Thanks JP.
I was thinking the same WTH !
They talk about it in All the World’s a Stage documentary. They let the fifth guy audition since he’d made the effort to come, but they felt bad for him as he had to set up/tear down his kit, but they already knew Neil was their guy.
Geddy said they promised each other they wouldn't pick a drummer until they heard all five, he said he wanted to stop at Neil and not even hear the 5th drummer and Alex got mad about it because Geddy was going back on what they had agreed to. No telling if they went ahead and auditioned the 5th drummer
@@matthewhoag2609 Cool. Thanks for the info!
@@youtoo2233 Got It! Thanks much.
A leap forward musically but, oh those lyrics. As a 14 year old church going Catholic kid I didn't know the source or inspiration but knew that "begging hands and bleeding hearts will always cry out for more" didn't sound right to me. It was a few years later that I learned about Ayn Rand and her crude "philosophy" called objectivism. Sadly her 'wisdom' is still having a malignant effect on American society (perhaps more than ever) but thankfully Neil Peart confirmed years later that he'd long since moved from Ayn fucking Rand.
Seen it mentioned, but two living GOAT conversation in Danny Carey and Les Claypool held down the rhythm on a viral video a couple years ago for their tribute to this song. Edit for link: ua-cam.com/video/fULwDbZ4iSU/v-deo.html
