This sort of demonstration was actually born out of a "one time" performance way back in 1928. It was meant to be a one-off event in order to display skill and training - but it was so well recieved and so impressed everyone that they kept the tradition alive!

I was a cadet in my High School's Navy JROTC for 4 years, and 3 of those years, I was a member of our Rifle Drill Team. We did regulation and performance drill, and my last 2 1/2 years, we performed as a silent drill team, with the M1 Garands (got waivers for bayonets 2X). Made Nationals, and placed top 3 in Navy JROTC for those last 3 years, as well as our 1st Internationals. always beaten out by Basic HS, but to be fair - they were a Marine Corps JROTC Unit that had performed for Presidents and Heads of State for 13 years prior, and had to lug around M-14s.

    • @tricitymorte1
      @tricitymorte1 3 місяці тому +2

My HS had an NJROTC program that was led by a retired Marine, and he operated like one. My brother was in the program for 4 years. They had M1 garands with the bolts and barrels welded shut, because they were otherwise fully functional, and the school didn't want any... mistakes. Unless you were on the marksman team, you didn't get a functioning weapon.

So the USMC is technically a branch of the Navy, but they are their own force. They are the “few but the proud” because they are small in terms of numbers, but are regarded as one of the fiercest, and most formidable among the entire U.S. military. Their training is physically, and mentally grueling. They are the ones that are sent in first to handle any foreign military operation. During WWI they were given the nick-name “Devil Dogs” from official German reports which called the Marines at Belleau Wood Teufel Hunden. It has been said that this nickname came about from Marines being ordered to take a hill occupied by German forces while wearing gas masks as a precaution against German mustard gas. Germans used the term "Teufelshunde" to refer to the Marines due to their ferocity

They tend to be among the the most exceptional high-pressure teams to participate in even though its a ceremonial capacity. But they are all still warriors. And yes, most people think this particular video where the players start 'practicing' on the field is very disrespectful, even though this is overall a decent example of their drill work

When I was in Basic (Army) Everyone participated in drill and ceremony at least 1 to 2 weeks of the course. A big part of the purpose behind it is to instill confidence in handling the weapon you are issued, and the ability to work in coordination with your peers. I've participated in silent drill during public parades, with the idea being more of a performance than a training regime. The Drill and Ceremonies portion of basic was a significant contributor to my being successful in those parades, as they happened while I was a reservist and practicing the silent drill performance was not considered a priority activity during monthly weekend drill. In fact most of the time it ended up being about 1 hour of reviewing the choreography of the drill on a weekend drill in the month before the parade we would be participating in.
While I was not a fan of the football players being on the field, there is a lot of space compression in the long lenses the videographers are using to capture the footage of the Silent Drill. It looks bad in the video, but I assure you no one in the stands had an obstructed view of the drill. Could it have been handled better? Sure. I think it looked worse on video than it most likely appeared in person.

Not to take anything away from the Marines, but the shock from foreigners who see this, makes me wonder how they'd react to seeing high school kids do similar routines in marching band, with and without music. I used to feel like such a big shot wearing my uniform and being so disciplined as as one unit.🙂 It didn't hurt that we won many, many competitions, either.
I miss my high school days when we had majorettes, flag bearers and rifle bearers (wooden rifles) each tossing their color guard equipment sky high, with amazing precision.🙂
I was asked to be a featured majorette when I decided to give my clarinet a break and try color guard. I'm left handed and couldn't get comfortable with the flag, I didn't want risk catching the rifle with my head, and though I was a majorette/baton twirling before high school, I was still left handed and didn't catch on well enough with my right hand to be with the band's lineup. Our band director suggested that I go up front as a featured twirler. I was cool with it, until he started talking about twirling fire batons, fire hoops, and swords. 😬
I politely picked up my clarinet and asked where he wanted me to stand in the formation. 😊

It really does make me angry and shows how the NFL has simply zero respect for any branches of the United States Military. Which explains why they kneel for our National Anthem as well. The Marines and all branches of the military deserve better than the football players showed. Really upsetting. And I'm glad you noticed that. And pointed it out. The Marine Corps Silent Drill team is considered the best drill team in the US military.
They are marines, not soldiers, different branch of military. Obviously they wouldn't expect you to automatically know that so not likely to take offense here.
No, the marine loosing his hat was not planned/part of the performance. That wasn't supposed to happen. But, they have contingencies for pretty much everything and are extremely disaplined in how to handle unplanned events and mistakes. So, thats why the correction almost looked like part of the planned performance.
Many don't like that the football players were warming up in the middle of the field during the performance. It used to be that pre-game and half-time performances weren't interupted but its becom fairly common that they are now be it the cheerleaders, marching band, drill team etc. But, for a Texas team to do it for a military drill team is still kind of surprising because Texas is pretty suportive/respectful of the military in general.
In general good portions of the country do respect the military in the US, and its much more common than in Germany. But, when it comes to individual servicemembers that varies, some people respect them and some don't.

As a Marine (but never a member of the silent drill team) I could tell that loosing the hat was an accident but Marines always have back up plans when things go bad. Yes, it was pretty disrespectful to have players on the field during this 10 minute drill. And only Army are soldiers. Marines are Marines or troops. Air Force are airmen and Navy are sailors.

No Chris, the loss of the hat was not planned. Occasionally, a hat or rifle might be dropped during a performance, but the Marines, as we have come to understand, will adapt to the situation and press on.

One note, for future reference, you NEVER call a Marine a "soldier". That is strictly an Army thing. A Marine would consider it something of an insult.

USMC vet here, 2005-2010, like others have said. Him losing his cover (hat) isn’t planned, we just don’t react to it, not so anyone can notice, we are taught in boot camp, when doing drill, even if someone passes out, we don’t love to help, or react, just leave them. We won’t do that in combat, but if your ass passed out during drill, we’re gonna leave you, then make fun of you in private, later on, ahaha.

In fariness to the players and teams and coaches, the NFL has 12 minutes between halves every game except the Super Bowl. The teams go inside and take a breath discuss their strategy for the next half for about five minutes, then come out to warm up before that 12 minutes is over. As impressive as the Marines are in thier silent drill--and I do love wathcing them--they are in this instance half time entertainment. And TV schedules for advertising are what keep the games on TV. We would neve have seen them do this if it hadn't been for TV networks not breakaing awy to advertisements. Usually we don't even SEE the half time show at all if we're not in the stadium or it's not the Super Bowl. So from that perspective I think they were greatly respected and given a larger swath of the field and a larger bank of uninterurpted commercial time than most half time entertainment ever gets.

This team "represents" all Marines, but is not representative of them (not a random example of them). The skills they demonstrate are highly refined through endless hours of practice. Many of their moves have military value. Marching in groups has roots preceding the Roman Legions, and is related to how a group of soldiers projected military power (killed enemy) by orienting their weapons in one direction to maximize effectiveness. Changing the direction of that power as a group is what marching is all about. The opening of the movie, "A Few Good Men" with Tom Cruise has an amazing demonstration of this team's skills.

Marines started as shipboard security and fighters to be dropped ashore. The officers still attend the Naval Academy and choose to join the Marines. They are most excellent fighters but never called soldiers. The German soldiers of WWI nicknamed them Devil Dogs because of their fierce fighting spirit . Our own sailers sometimes call them Leathernecks or Jar Heads. Started as insults and the Marines have just embraced them. Marines still are carried to their battlefields by the Navy and still serve as security on board. ( the rifles weigh about 5kg)

7"47 in the marine corps we dont wear the band of our cover around our chin or neck... it rests on the bill of the cover on top. they are tight fitting covers so you dont need the chin strap much to keep it on your head. If your cover comes off during drill you act as if it never happened and keep your barring and continue.

I agree. Players should not be on the field when a ceremony like this is happening. Unfortunately, $$$ or winning is more important than our actual freedom. Personally, practicing during a ceremony like this is unacceptable. That's why I don't acknowledge / follow the NFL or others that don't acknowledge American Freedom.

I know that the Germans have no context to base the United States Marines off of, so (to all the Marines past, present & future this is for him to understand what a Marine is. Remember in German it’s kriegsmarine basically it means navy), so to put it in simple terms the US Marines act as the land force for the Navy but they but they are independent of the navy just like they are independent of the Army.
    Now the most important thing,
a Marine is, always referred to as a Marine. A member of the Army is called a soldier, under no circumstances do you ever call a Marine a soldier.
    Simple right?

Chris I agree with you about the players coming onto the field to warmup while the Marine drill team was performing it was disrespectful. But that's the NFL for you when players are allowed to kneel during the performance of our National Anthem.😡 About the performance of some of these rifle drill teams I've seen two rows of the squad face each other tossing their bayoneted rifles to each other over the head of their squad leader! Absolutely amazing.
