    I am sticking with my laserdisc copy, still looks ands sounds amazing on my high end Sony tube TV. Best part of laserdisc, no clunky menus, no ads of any kind, no compression of any kind. Just press play and movie starts, just how movies should be

    Just finished watching True Lies on 4K To be completely honest with you I was so focused on the movie that I didn’t see anything wrong with the transfer, I thought it looked amazing! Better then it ever looked!!

    I just watched the abyss and Thelma & Louise yesterday. Thelma & Louise was grainy and beautiful. The abyss, not a whole lot of grain, yet it's still beautiful. I get so into the movie I could care less.

      Both of those 4k discs look great. That car in the sunlight and the views of the mountains in the background of Thelma and Louise look amazing. The Abyss looked awesome too. I know a lot of people hate things that change but James Cameron is using a technique that removes grain without losing detail. I prefer a little bit of grain but still think The Abyss and Aliens look excellent but not perfect. I haven't seen True Lies all the way through yet but in the first 5 min I watched it looked good.

    Should you buy bluray and let your system upscale the image or should you pay extra for an upscaled 4K disk with inferior quality?

      Case by case basis, but if there is a digital version streaming on a platform you already have on, I’d say check out the new transfer through one of those, or through UA-cam comparisons and then make the determination which version you want

  • @jrp1226

    I agreed with your opinion on the transfer. I was so into the movie I didn’t have 8 hours to freeze every scene and analyze it with a microscope so I can cry to strangers on UA-cam.. 😂 But jokes aside, it’s better than anything out there. Appreciate it and help keep physical media alive! Great video brother..

    Everyone has a different threshold. Your view is valid; I’m glad you’re not trying to guilt people who are opposed to this on principle. DNR was always an issue for me, but AI image enhancement is way too far for me to accept. Even if this is acceptable on its own, allowing this opens up the floodgates

  • @CuriousEnthusiast956

    Just because most people won't go frame by frame to check the details, doesn't automatically mean that people should be denied having a digital presentation that is much closer to the original experience. It was they who put the money down to watch his films. After all, when people have watched a movie on 35mm in the original release, or VHS, DVD, Blu Ray & 4K, what is everybody's favourite way to see a film they like? On Film! A original film print! So altering a movie's presentation is not going to make people enjoy the movie more. Especially when Digital is already gonna have a different image due to the technology being so different to Photochemical.
    Even the older editions of True Lies already have DNR in them. There's even old Laserdisc magazines from the 90s where Cameron talked about how the DNR process works, so even at that time he was already doing it! So there is no real great edition of True Lies. But there is one thing that can't be denied: The old DVD is far more consistently watchable, warts and all.

    • @CuriousEnthusiast956
      @CuriousEnthusiast956 7 місяців тому

      Detail isn't all about numbers. If you're wiping away so much detail that everybody looks mannikins, number's don't mean crap. Especially when the quality of film isn't about mandated resolution and numbers, it's about good quality and that's it.

    • @thischannelisdeleted
      @thischannelisdeleted 6 місяців тому

      Yes that’s correct. There’s more detail on the Blu-ray too. You must not know what detail means. You’re thinking of sharpeness. You can sharpen a white blank screen and upscale it to 8K and you’ll never see any detail.

  • @1165mac

    I get what you’re saying, but I have trouble understanding why Cameron and others aren’t trying to archive their films to match what audiences experienced when seeing a brand new film print on opening night at a premiere quality movie theater. If they want to tinker with it, so be it, but at least preserve the movie in its original state for posterity’s sake.

    • @jacobmacdonagh4070
      @jacobmacdonagh4070 7 місяців тому +4

      I wish it looked like that but the truth is Cameron never liked the way a brand new film print on opening night looked like because it was already a degradation of the original image and not an ”perfect” image which is to him an image with no grain, he was forced to because that was the technology and the only way to make and show movies at the time but if he made True Lies today it would undoubtedly be digital with no grain so he’s trying to make it look like that

    • @CuriousEnthusiast956
      @CuriousEnthusiast956 7 місяців тому

      @@jacobmacdonagh4070 So basically everybody looking like mannikins is his idea of a 'perfect image'. Man, Cameron saying that he never liked the look of a brand new print is rubbish. Every director who made a film back in the day has a personal print of their own films at least! A little word of advice: Never listen to rich Hollywood or corporate hacks like him.

    I think expectations were way too high for this, even if they had left in all the thick grain with no DNR/A.I. tinkering the color grading would still be different and people would still complain about it either way. This is an advanced modern format, none of these old movies are going to look 100% the same as they did in theaters and VHS, it's just not going to happen. People need to be more realistic about this 4K thing, even the releases where it looks very accurate to the original sources will still have some major differences, compare them side by side to your older releases and you'll see what I'm talking about.

    If the 'official' releases can't compete with the D-Theatre rip, then they've got no business having my money. This isn't a low budget, independent movie. It's a Studio backed Schwarzenegger blockbuster. There are no excuses for messing up a film of this magnitude considering the technology we have at our fingertips.
    Anyone defending or even buying this shit, is condoning big studios putting out crap discs, and signifies the end of physical media. The whole point of physical media is that it is better than streaming. How can so many boutique labels like Arrow, Capelight, Vinegar Syndrome etc. give us the best versions of a movie yet studios serve us up this huge slice of shit flan?

    You had a problem with the T2 color grading? The color grading change on True Lies is the BIGGEST sin for me and what makes it unwatchable. All the skin tones are dead, everything looks washed out. It doesn’t fit the vibe AT ALL. There’s way more “California” vibes in this film. It’s not a spy thriller, it’s an action comedy lol. The teal grade actually fits better with T2.

I have only 1 4K UHD TV in my house and it's a Samsung that does an excellent job upscaling full HD source to near UHD. They don't sell it separately so I have no choice to buy the set.

    12:20 If the old DVD and Laserdisc has more detail as you admitted, then why is the 4K the 'best way' to watch the film then in this 'day and age'? Repurposing a pre 21st century movie to look sterile and devoid of detail like today's movies is not something that anyone asked for. It's a bit hilarious that the same filmmaker who became famous with a movie about the dangers of AI uses AI to ruin his own movies. How corporate & ironic 😉😉

His movies are pure masculine entertainment. I am a straight man so testosterone driven movies are what I love! He never claimed to be a dramatic kind of actor running down Oscars. His movies in his hey day were BLOCKBUSTER BOX OFFICE HITS. His movies have great repeat watching abilities unlike some boring drama that got some movie award for best picture. Some of those boring award winning movies never even did well in the theaters. I can't count how many times I watch ' Commando', Predator , T 1 and T2 etc.

Most of his movies are fun to watch, which in my opinion, makes them good enough to own.
