  • Value is the attribute of lightness or darkness of a color. Any color can be lightened by adding white, creating a tint. Any color can be darkened by adding black, creating a shade. Color can also be shifted by adding gray, creating a tone. There are an infinite number of colors of gray.
A gray scale is a common device used to determine value. Painting a range of grays from white to black on card stock introduces you to the range of gray colors that are possible, and helps you to discern value more easily when you look at fabrics or artwork. Paint a gray scale bar in order to see the range for yourself, and you will also have created a useful tool, for comparing the values of colors later.
Sometimes it’s hard to tease apart analyzing the colors in a painting or other piece of artwork, and analyzing the values. Hopefully this video will help you begin to discern how color is used - and when value is part of the equation.
