Wow. I was looking for a border to hide a mishaped blanket due to yarn thichness changes. I came across your video and did NOT expect to hear you say you cut it!!! Hahahaha. But.. brilliant. Thank you for your help. Im going to give it a whirl!!! We are human, and we are not perfect. We do the best we can. 😊 Thanks again!!!
Thank you for sharing. I am 3/4 through a similar blanket, horizontal sections, different stitches. ANd IT IS GOOFY LIKE YOURS WAS. It takes humility to admit a mistake, kindness to help others avoid the same. God bless you.
Thank you for telling me that you had a similar problem. Nobody likes making mistakes, but hopefully we can all learn from each other to avoid them! Thanks for watching!
I’ve actually cut up the center of a sweater I’d just finished knitting. An old Scandinavian technique referred to as a steel. This was straight out of one of my Elizabeth Zimmerman books. Mark the center and stitch a row of tight machine stitches down both sides of the marked line. Then, pick up your good, sharp, dressmaking, shears, hold your breath, and cut right up that center line. Then you need to sit down for a bit to recover and ask yourself, what have I just done. But - it turned out fine. You just pick up stitches along the cut edge, just inside
Oh boy lol.I can imagine so funny but when u spend a ton of time on a project and r more than half way done u about cry if u unravel it.Ive had to do that before. Its sad and heartwrenching.
This video appears to have been up for a long time and im just running across this and i cant say how much i appreciate you sharing what pro's or lifers would probably call taboo because as a continuous beginner or amateur it's reason like this "the issues" that prevent me from improving because i just give up. So thank you for giving me hope that now i know that all those half started projects may be salvageable yet. Thank you, thank you, thank you, wish there were more crafters willing to show how to fix things so that they are not a total loss. Super humble of you to share cant thank you enough
Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad the video could be of some help, and also give some hope that little mistakes can be fixed! Thanks for watching!
I just finished crocheting the main body of a baby afghan and have the same problem as you did. I actually already thought about cutting the edges to straighten them out. I'm also a knitter and have done the process of steeking mentioned in one of the comments. I think I'm going to lay out the afghan and mark it so the sides are straight, stitch down the marked lined, then cut off the excess on the outside of the stitched line. Then I'll crochet a cute border. Keep your fingers crossed!
I noticed I was missing one of my waves. It’s about 10 stitches so I will increase to bring it back out and then fix the area when putting on a border. Most of the time the border helps to straighten the blanket. As long as the slant is not too far off. For smaller projects blocking also helps.
Great blanket and congrats for fixing idea What also can be solution is to round it with variations of sc, hdc and dc , it worked for me and was easier than with the needle😇
@sunceko2659 Yes, I had considered that, and if I had used all one color of yarn, it would have worked. But I saw that it looked quite obvious that I'd made a big mistake. So, to save the blanket, I cut it and then matched the border. What an experience! Thanks for watching!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I used a pattern of stitches that were new to me & I couldn't figure out how to count them. I was using the Crystal Wave stitch. I tried to increase stitches as soon as I saw the error but it just didn't work. I AM going to FRANKENSTEIN my blanket with your suggestion... I'll modify mine to correct my error. I've been crocheting for approximately 40+ years so I think I can do this!
I just finished my first baby blanket for a colleagues newborn son, and i have the exact same problem. I actually got more yarn to make another blanket from scratch. I am so glad i found this. Now i can fix the blanket. Do you or anyone have a link on how to first do the stiches before we cut? That will be very helpful
Because this seems to be a somewhat common problem amongst us, the logic of counting stitches would be obvious. But in the moment, on this project, I thought I was good enough at crocheting that I didn't need to count. My mistake. Counting stitches might be a surer way to success. Another idea would be to measure after each row(?)
This blanket was so much fun to make! I hope you enjoy making it as much as I did; and you'll avoid my mistake in the process! I think the hardest part was choosing the colors. Thanks for watching!
I used to crochet all the time, but haven’t for several years. I’ve been working on a baby blanket for my new grandson and the edges are extremely uneven. I don’t have the nerve to cut it. I think I’ll try to to a border of varied depths to conceal it as best as I can. Luckily, it is a variegated yarn.
You pick up stitches along the edges and knit your button band and buttonhole band. The next time you try it there’s no panic or rapid heart beats. What fun.
Wow! What a technique and good to know. If I should EVER have to do this again, I'll remember this idea! However, I think it'll take more than a few times to get over the trauma of the cutting part! Thank you!!! I don't feel so bad now...
I know!!!! My heart nearly broke when I began cutting those yarn strands, but little by little, as I added the border, I saw that it would actually work to correct my mistake! And even though we see can see those rare flaws in our work, hopefully no one else will!!! Thanks for watching!!!
Please help. This happened on the baby blanket I'm making for my daughter and our first born. How do i do this? How do i cut and seal. I'm using alpine stitch and it's taking a long long time. Can't bare to start again. Please help. 😥❤😊
I totally understand! Try doing what I did by carefully trimming the side. Then with a needle and thread, secure the edge with a sort of side ways slip stitch, where you overlap the stitches, starting from the point just before the cut and ending just after the cut. That way, the yarn doesn't unravel. Then follow up with a whip stitch with yarn, over that. If that makes any sense, I'm glad! If not, you brought up a great point, that might be better seen in a video than described in a written answer, and could be a great NEXT video! I hope this helped at least a little.
@@mysweetpetals thank you so much for your help. A video would be great but i do understand what you are meaning. What if i continue to put the boarder around the blanket. I realy appreciate your help. Thank you ❤😊
@@Blarisa If you go ahead with the border, you could start with a narrow border and make it wider or narrower in those areas that need building up to make the blanket square. Then add your decorative border on top of that. Hopefully that'll help! Thanks!
For this blanket, I made up my own stitch pattern (and color design) after watching some "stripey crochet blanket" videos. Nothing too complicated and pretty simple. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

Hey, how are you going to stitch in before you cut? Like a specific stitch or do you mean needle and thread stitch?
I will remember this for the next time something of .mine comes out a bit crooked.Such a good idea.

That’s my favorite border of 2020. I’ve enjoyed using it on many blankets. I love your baby blanket and your chosen colors are beautiful.
I really like this border, too! It's easy and quick, and overall, was a fun blanket to make (except for the mistake!)

Not very much fun, huh? But it worked for me! Thanks for watching.
Do u think taking a sewing machine to it first then cutting the edge would work as well then going into doing a boarder
My question also, as I'm considering taking the plunge!
What a pretty blanket! I love the colors. Is that green or beige?
I don't have the guts to cut mine 😞
