- Terror has no shape! The Maniacal Cinephile reviews THE BLOB (1988) a remake of the 1958 original movie. In a tiny California town, high school students Brian (Kevin Dillon), Meg (Shawnee Smith) and Paul (Donovan Leitch) discover a strange, gelatinous substance that melts the flesh of any living creatures in its path. The deadly substance gets into the town's sewer system, where it begins growing uncontrollably, occasionally emerging to feast on unsuspecting townspeople. A military clean-up crew is sent to eliminate the menace, but it may end up doing more harm than good. THE BLOB was directed by Chuck Russell who co-wrote the script with Frank Darabont.

When are we gonna get King Kong? The original film turned 90 this year.
That ending shot was really cool! How did you do it? Was it similar at all to the original?
Star Jelly? The Universe is constellating jizzing on planet dirt™?
How are u alive
Only if you let Rob Zombie out of the basement.
This movie is excellent and severely underrated. It really shows how a horror movie with a simple premise can be elevated by smart writing, likable characters, and creative special effects.
exactly! one of the greatest creature features ever
Same with The Thing. The original was fine, but the remake was a work of art.
Ok but “smart writing?” Let’s not get crazy. It’s a simple but serviceable plot.
These long reviews are the bomb. Great work Andys. Hope Rex survived the blob
Thanks, Hernan!
One of the first horror sequences I remember as a kid was Paul having his body liquified while he screams under layers of The Blob. Positively one of the best practical effects that’s STILL delivers. Amazing remake!
Yeah, this movie scarred me as a kid. Still haven't attempted a rewatch to this very day. Disintegration by gelatinous acid sounds far worse than getting chopped up by Freddy, Jason, or Leatherface. 😭
@@dubuyajay9964 it is a bad way to go

Damn dude, that shot of the blob devouring you as your reaching for the fire extinguisher was really really impressive. Well done Andy.
Thank you!
@@StitchedTogetherPictures No, thank you! For what is obviously a pink plastic bag you did a fantastic job "animating" it. Like, in the actual sense of that word, as in you really managed to make it look alive.
And for anyone who comes across this, I was referring to the skit that starts around 31:23. The shot in particular is around 31:55.
When old married people haven't had sex in so long their KY becomes sentient and carnivorous.
@@deathproof8732 Well, why would they even need to bother having sex if the KY is fucking them all by itself? Sounds inefficient.
It honestly crazy that this remake doesn't seem to get as much love an attention as John Carpenter's The Thing, really did enjoy how well they remade The Blob and got to love those gore effects and the film.
A couple of Twin Peaks actors doesn't hurt...but The Thing had Russel and more. The Fly had Goldblum and Davis. The effects were great, but Darabond is no Carpenter or Cronenberg.
Fascinating that both weren’t well received when they came out.
@@bradharrah3339 I'd argue Darabont deserves to be thought of as in the same tier as Carpenter and Cronenberg, despite lack of mame recognition. He might not have as many classics on his resume, but all his movie and writing credits are quality
@@StitchedTogetherPictures Perhaps it has to do with a general bias against horror...? What horror movies WERE critically acclaimed upon release?
@@bradharrah3339 He didn't say critically. The Thing notoriously bombed and that same year Poltergeist was doing gangbusters.
Imagine if people in '58 saw the '88 version instead 🤯🤣
Oh no 80's level gore in the 50's? The government would have burned the film.
Bruh, they would've outlawed that shit right away 😂

Prank no 2 I’m doing with my Time Machine
The headshake at asking if this needs the boot is the best part.
I honestly like both versions of The Blob. The 50s version had Steve McQueen, a corny yet creepy atmosphere and cool blob FX. The 80s version had awesome blob FX, creepy kills, and Shawnee Smith & Kevin Dillon. Both had great portrayal of teenagers of their respective eras.
Me too
This film is one of the best horror remakes ever and a certified classic. I first saw it as a 7 year old kid, and it scared the crap out of me.
^
Goddamn Andy, this has to be the most impressive skit you've done so far. That blob you have at the end looks so cool in action.
Thank you! It was a lot of work for a silly video lol.
I bet you used a lot of candy there lol
I mistakenly caught the TV trailer for this film when I was five years old. It scared me for life. 😂
I didn’t even like seeing the VHS cover at the video store. I watched it for the first time in high school and it freaked me out. I tried again in college and again I was sweating like a pig and terrified to sleep. Finally my best friend asked me if I’d watch it with him a couple of years ago. He was home schooled by very conservative parents and I’d been introducing him to all of the great movies he’s missed. So I agreed because I’m a good friend. To my surprise I had a great time and really enjoyed the film.
At 38 years of age I finally overcame my fear of one of the only good remakes ever made.
Nice!
Right there with you. That trailer that showed the guy getting sucked down the drain hit hard and haunted me when I was a kid. Even today, decades later, I still squirm at that bit. XD
I knew there was something missing from my weekend. A new boots to reboots makes it complete. Thanks for your amazing work as always.
Thanks so much!
I had the absolute WORST day at work today but a new episode of "Boots to Reboots" always makes me happy
Thanks for making my night, Andy; all three of you!
Those special effects were impressive for a youtube review show. Good job.
This movie is excellent, and really is one of the gold standards for remakes. It's too bad we never got a sequel to it.
Thanks, Ryan!
@@StitchedTogetherPictures How did you make the effects at the end? So awesome!
Honestly I always loved the idea that the Blob is actually the equivalent of a waste disposal system for some super advanced alien race. They just have a bunch of them as glorified garbage bins absorbing all their waste, then once it gets too big they just dump it into space. Always found that idea darkly comedic that basically an alien's trash bag would be such an unstoppable threat to us.
Aside from maybe 20% of the effects towards the end being a bit dated once the Blob gets bigger, this is really one of the best remakes out there, as you mentioned it's right up there with The Fly and The Thing. It expands on the original concept, expands on the effects, has some great little touches with character beats like Meg's failed hero shot falling off the truck or struggling to use the gun at the end. On top of all that it's just unremorseful, killing off the potential lead, killing kids, and having characters like the Sheriff set up early on just to die abruptly, and all of which being done as gruesomely as possible, really adds a genuine sense of danger.
One of the best examples of a remake done right. Took the original campy sci-fi film and made it an actual gory (for the time) classic!
I was having a pretty bad Sunday but as soon as I saw a new boots to reboots video it made my day a whole lot better, thanks Andy
Thank you and have a wonderful day!
Haven't seen the original, but The Blob (1988) is a classic of the Horror Genre & a masterclass in how a remake can improve on a classic.
Agreed!
I love pretty much everything about this remake, but for me the best part is Shawnee Smith's scream when she sees Paul trapped in the Blob. Apparently it was her first time seeing the setup so they captured about as real a reaction as you could get. Sheriff deputy getting bent in half backwards is also as hilarious as it is horrifying. Great video Andys! Always excited for another installment of Boots 2 Reboots
Thanks so much!
The Blob remake is absolutely amazing, I put it on par with The Thing.
I saw the remake as a kid when the babysitter was watching it and it really disturbed me the guy being swallowed by the blob. I saw the original when I was older and I admit I appreciate it so much.
"looks like a giant.....Jell-O mold!" - Ray Stantz
"I hate Jell-O!" - Winston Zeddemore
"oh come 'on, there's always room for Jell-O!" - Peter Venkman
Your special effects and editing are impeccable! WHAT?! Loved this one! This movie came out 11 days after my 12th Birthday. I remember watching the original with my mom, and then I watched the remake probably a year or so after it came out. I had to have seen it on HBO or Cinemax. Great memories when I see stuff like this. Thank you, Andy!
I've always loved your work and your humor! Thank you for sharing your talent and passion for the Horror genre with us. This time around, Evil's "Then why the Hell are you seeing it?!" had me embarrassing myself with laughter. Keep being awesome!
Thanks so much, Lex!
Was super happy to see you're covering this one! It's one of my all time favorites. It holds up surprisingly well...and had the balls to kill a kid
Indeed!
Proof that not only can a remake be as good as the original, while being its own thing, but it can be even better. The Thing, The Fly, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers are other good examples of this.
Agreed!
I really want to see Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978.
What an amazing coincidence, last night I gave this a rewatch. And man, what a great remake it is! One thing that I love in this that greatly improved over the original is that the titular monster feels like such an apocalyptic threat. That exposition scene where the military scientiest says that if they don't contain the creature there and then, in a week there won't be an US of A... damn, the stakes in the movie are huge!
Damn it dude, everytime I watch any of your videos I get mad at the fact that you don't have a million subs. Your videos are pure quality and deserve to be seen by all of UA-cam.
Ok, i'm genuinely impressed by your blob effects at the end. Bravo!
Thanks!
I like both versions. The 50s version on how campy it is and the 80s version for its practical effects.
I've never seen a cat get brain freeze before. 😂😂😂. Thanks for making my evening Andy, Andy, and Andy.
I’ve seen so much carnage through various horror movies over the years and the characters getting dissolved in The Blob STILL makes me viscerally uncomfortable.
That death would suck.
"Angry, large and red. Just like my COC-"
Oh Andy, you always know how to make me laugh. 😂
I love the ending of the 1988. Because I imagine immediately after he holds up the jar it’s just One Guy One Jar and that’s how the sequel starts.
The actor who played the preacher (Del Close) was a dear friend of mine. He was one of 3 creators of improv comedy in the 1960s and was the director of Second City Theater in Chicago for years. He was the acting coach for John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis & Chris Farley, and the mentor for The Upright Citizens Brigade. He was also a head writer in the early seasons of SNL and SCTV.
This movie and Tremors are what made me fall in love with practical effects as a kid
It's kinda cool to see the younger generation watching this. It terrified me as a kid, but it's entertaining to watch now
If people hadn't said this already, the mechanic in the movie is Beau Billingslea, the voice of Jet in "Cowboy Bebop."
Nice!
Perfect horror movie logic.
"Huh weird, a strange object fell from the sky interesting.......I'mma poke it with a stick!!!"
Love the subtle hint Andy that this movie is not going to get the boot. This is a classic movie. Love your work as always.
Perfect timing, I absolutely love this remake and I'm going to see "Big Trouble in Little China" next Saturday at the Colonial theater from the original ! This can only bode well for me! Thanks Andy, Andy. And Andy!
That sounds awesome!
Absolutely loved the review. Can’t wait to see what you have next in store for another boots to reboots episode
Thank you!
Absolutely loved this one back when i was younger glad to see it still holds up
I’ve been waiting so long for this one! I love practical effects and the blob does 👏 not 👏 disappoint 👏
I'm so glad you are back at it and better than ever! Highly underrated channel!! Thanks for doing what you do! Cheers!
Thank you!
I like the original and the remake.
One of my top creature features!

Fun fact : There was a planned remake of The Blob by Rob Zombie that never made. The only detail about the film is an artwork that seemly feature a blob zombies, blob monolith & rock concert
One of my favorite reboots.
Excellent video as always! The writing and production value is top notch. Also, The Blob is a favorite of mine, so it makes it even better. Keep it up Andy!
Thanks so much!
Andy, your videos are always done to such an impeccable standard with regards to writing and production standards that you really deserve 10x as many subscribers. Great work!
Thank you!
I LOVE the longer reviews with clips that you do. I know they must take hours and hours to film and edit, it is truly appreciated.
Frank Darabont projects never get the credit they deserve. The Blob and The Mist are two prime examples of that.
The Mist had a ballsy ending. I remember seeing it in the theater and jokingly saying to the person next to me, “watch, everything will be fine now” and then it happened! I was both horrified and laughing my ass off.
Absolutely wonderful to see your videos man It Always makes me so happy. if you don't count The Thing, this is one of my favorite remakes
Glad you like them :)
The special effects hold up wonderfully, and the video's 'meteor' subplot was done really well, too!
Thanks, Andy, for the awesome video rife with jokes - especially Evil Andy's! They made me laugh out loud! Have a great day!
Thank you, Alice!
@@StitchedTogetherPictures You're welcome!
another fantastic video as always Andy!!! your videos always make me laugh out loud, thank you for all of your hard work!
Thank you!
This almost feels like the forgotten movie a trilofy of 50s remakes along with The Fly and The Thing but it doesn’t get as much recognition as the others l. I just love how this Blob genuinely feels like an amoeba crossed woth a tumor. Great video and i would love to see a mega Boots to Reboots for King Kong. Maybe when the next movie comes out
love the original The Blob. I wasn't aware there was a remake
This was a hilarious but fantastic review. R I P Andy
Thanks!
Another great job Andy!! Phoenixville Pa. Native here! I enjoy the remake better than the original even though they filmed the original in my hometown. Loved your video! 🤘🤘🎸🎸🔥🔥
That’s awesome!
Thank you so much for reviewing this Andy, this film Deserves its recognition a lot more to be seen with the greats like The Thing and The Fly remake.
“As long as the arctic stays cold”……Whoops! 😂😂😂
“It’s getting bigger” followed by very phallic imagery

"I guess he didn't see THAT coming in the prophecy!" 😂 That line and his little sarcastic walk killed me!
Not a much as The Blob did to that town, but still lol

I knew she looked familiar!!! I just never realized what movie I saw her in until now!!! Thanks Andy’s!!!😊
The 1958 and 1988 The Blob, both bonafide classics. 😎
If I ever get the funds, I would totally make a sequel to this one. It deserves it.
Oh wow, this was a classic of mine when I still very little. Honestly I am surprised only now you got to this. The Blob seemed right up your alley. A monster movie about a killer goopy goo. You cant get more cheesy horror than that. XD
Dude, that outro was really well done. It took me minute to realize it was a miniature. Great video as always Andy's. Keep it up, please.
Thanks so much!
The extra time you put into your own versions of the movies are always a great treat! You're damn good at what you do.
Thank you so much, Richard!
Yes!! God I love seeing a new upload from you and it’s been that way for several years.
Thanks, Jacob!
“Because his father went to get cigarettes and never came back” 💀
I never saw the 88 version. I used to watch the original with my dad a lot when I was a kid, It was one of the few films that scared me because villains like the blob and the t 1000 would be so hard to take down.
Nothing says Mother's Day quite like watching a man with multiple personalities review a 1988 remake of The Blob.
It's practically a family tradition.
This gooey one is for the Milfs - Evil Andy
Great review as always, hope you're doing good Andy
Thanks! You as well!
The real tragedy at the end is that the Blob absorbing and destroying Andy means those sweet NECA figures on the wall are going to be destroyed. :(
Thanks Andy. I have been watching good bad flicks videos on this and it was very interesting. And that blob told me it was 21 light years old.
The line "A man eating jellow" 2.08 mins in is also the same discretion for most Bill Cosby commercials in the 90s
I can understand why Amanda turned to drugs and then to helping Jigsaw - her experience with the Blob was no doubt traumatizing.
Jokes aside, I absolutely LOVE this remake. For me, it's on the same level as the remakes of The Thing and The Fly. Its a shame it was somewhat unloved in its time, but good thing people are rediscovering it now!
6:54 is making me laugh more than it's possible to do.
Nothing scares me more in horror than someone knowing how screwed they are, yet being powerless to stop it. A slasher where someone turns a blind corner, and their head gets cut off after two seconds? Doesn't scare me much.
Having enough time, even a few minutes in some cases to process what's happening to you, but knowing there's no way out of it. Fuck me man, that's scary. Getting eaten and absorbed by this thing, having to endure incredible physical pain, but also the mental torment of knowing you're already dead is a frightening concept.
Similar to what Damian Leone said about Art the Clown. In most 80s slashers the kill is actually pretty quick. Mostly thanks to the MPAA I’m sure. That’s why he likes Art to really have fun and drag out the kills. It’s more terrifying than quickly punching someone’s head off.

@@StitchedTogetherPictures Absolutely, watching Art kill people is almost difficult because it's so brutal and goes on for so long. It's not over quickly and cleanly.

That was a great skit Andy. I do have a soft spot for both movies. From what I recall, Shawnee's scream was pretty much 100% real when she saw Paul. It turns out she is very easily scared and the film makers had not shown the effect to her before.
About time...the remake is my favorite remake of all time. Way to go Andy for finally doing a video of this movie.
