So here’s the story according to the art book:
The big city is named Polis, normal humanoids live there. Due to undesirability of the body, Polis people transfer their brains into a big purple brain hive mind but can still break off and do their own business. They then built robotic shells to do work (in the game the robots are telepathically controlled). They’re really interested in sex and have sexual organs but they’re conceived and birthed from bulbs on a wall called genesis wall. The big wacky gate you go to in the end is apparently psychedelic manifested in corporeal form, meaning you died trying to get a whiff of weed lmfao.
The homunculi (babies in jar) are former slaves made by polis people, the purpose they served was to be used as a organic battery for machines in Polis. The Homunculi freed themselves and waged a war against Polis, but then a civil war within their own ravaged them.
The little dudes in balls are called moldmen, they’re a second race of slaves made by polis people, the building you visit in the beginning is a factory for growing moldmen
We don’t know the origin of the organic flesh infecting the world, but they’re called crater creatures and functions like bacteria, with a epicenter and it spreads throughout the lands. It’s probably a bio weapon created by polis to fight the homunculi or by homunculi to fight each other.
As for the story. You first wake up as a Polis man, already infected by the crater creature, you go to the moldmen production plant to power it up in hopes of getting a ride to the tower (probably to cure your infection). But the Moldmen plant's semen storage explodes and downs you, your infection is left uncheck and you mutate into a horrific parasite. Another polis man births from the genesis wall, learns about the world he's in and decides to travel to Polis to join his mates, but gets jumped by the first protagonist parasite. Both dudes actually works together and through hardships makes it to Polis. 2nd Protagonist tries to upload his mind but then wanted to use a shell robot to take his body through the psychedelic gates for the ultimate pleasure, but before he does that, the parasite kills him and fuse with him, becoming part of the crater creature. Greed killed you in the end.

And for those of you wondering what's the purpose of the moldmens: They were used as a farmed source of raw materials. In this world technology and flesh has become one, the weapons, control panels, infrastructure are all a built using a blur of Flesh&Bones+Tech. That’s why even buildings can “decay and rot” like a dead body. The flesh used to build things are farmed, farmed from Moldmen.
And for a side note: Of course there are many symbolism and artistic themes the developers explored throughout scorn, evidenced by the many real life artists this art-book referenced: Sigmund Freud, H.R Giger, Zdzisław Beksiński, etc... But, my comment above is strictly a logical and scientific explanation for everything in Scorn's world.

I'm not really asking for dialogues or names, but why is it impossible to know the gates at the end were meant for pleasure and not our ultimate goal? The themes here are just impossible to decipher unless you quite literally read the art book.

Having watched a couple of playthroughs on youtube, there is also another artist which the artwork of "Scorn" reminds me of: Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri.
Especially the depictions of the tumorous, sometimes bulbeous, sometimes root-and vines-like overgrowing flesh show a certain similarity to Serpieri's world of "Morbus Gravis", to some better known as the "Druuna"-series.
Btw, this video here is a preview of an upcoming book which will be available in december, published by Titan Books; should you like to get a good old-fashioned hardcover book.

Ooooohhhh yes! As a big lover of Giger, I was ecstatic to learn about Paolo and Druuna back in the day - somehow they felt so akin and related to me, without straight up copying each other, you know? It was like different facets of the same gemstone. Of course I also appreciated absolutely unapologetic and passionate erotica that Druuna provided, hehe:) Giger's erotica felt too foreign and alien (lol) to my perception mostly, but with Druuna it was really perfect. And a sidenote - as a girl, Druuna's eeehh... figure is very motivating and inspiring, something to look up to:)

This is how we used to game, because they weren’t capable of spoon feeding exposition within the game in the 80’s and 90’s, so you had to learn about the story outside of the game, like this art book. Granted, it wouldn’t have hurt the presentation if they left story text from this art book in the game for people to piece together if they wanted, but I respect their constraint, and trusting the player to figure the story out for themselves.

I feel that the whole “people wanted a doom clone” has turned into and excuse for this game that lack a LOT of content, I mean there isn’t anything to unlock, no new mods or even another difficult mode and the gameplay in itself is boring at worst and meh at best so the problem isn’t that people wanted a doom copie, people wanted a survival horror with fun mechanics and a new horrific world not a walking simulator with the ocasional enemy to shoot and couple of puzzles

@@cocaine7371 I think the devs made it short because of what it imposes on the player. Asking someone to play a game where there is no sense of direction or objectives to follow is already a lot to ask, but it’s also what makes this game really interesting.
As much as I love Doom, I’m glad they didn’t make something familiar. I like the idea of not knowing where to go, or not knowing what you’ve activated so you can progress, let alone not even knowing what is actually happening, there’s just something about the ambiguity of each section that feels so incredible to play.

Man, it's hilarious how no one says anything like that but you keep repeating moronic things like this.
While ignoring all the in depth criticism that has nothing to do with wanting a "doom game".
Pseudo intellectual idiots that want to feel big and smart by making statements like this towards people who don't like the grand "masterpiece", that only intellectuals would understand and not kids who want high octane action games.
There are so many negative reviews giving apt and detailed explanations of many core issues that they wish were better and you can say is "Uhh doom game go back to call of duty". Ironically that style is a large portion of positive reviews. Along with meme reviews and Giger fans.
      --
I'll copy-paste my other comment, not that you'd read it or care but still
Environmental storytelling is supposed to EXPLAIN things. Almost no one that played it has a problem with the concept, they have a problem with it because it's done poorly. If the game had decent environmental storytelling, at least a significant portion of that lore would be evident. People aren't uncapable of paying attention and figuring things out. I write very in depth worldbuilding, do art, very deep into all forms of storytelling and i don't like the "Game".
A lot of the core design is not good, appearing contradictory and shallow. For most of it, you can't look at something and speculate "why is this here" "how does it work" "where does it connect and why" "what is its function". As most designs seem like style over substance without much to back it up. Or at best, with extremely vague themes and nothing beyond that.
Only in specific areas there is some "lore". Where you can speculate in a more realistic fashion, rather then pull things out of your ass just to try and make some sense of things.
Though most of the game is samey, gray corridors and the like.
The rest is manufactured for game mechanics sake.
All of this makes it un-immersive and the more i played through it, the less a cared for it because the majority of it is utterly uninteresting with nothing behind it. Despite that i made the effort to look at things carefully and try to explore, which was a wasted effort because there is nothing to explore with the game being utterly linear. If anything the silly dead ends with a random "ammo station" (?) smacked in the middle of it, with a blatantly scripted crappy encounter the moment you use it, took away heavily from the experience. Hitting you with another epic does of un-immersive-ness.
Designs looks way better in the art book, in many basic ways. A lot more varied in many ways. (heck, many things looked way better in trailers and the demo, such as 95% of atmospheric moving elements being deleted)
There are so many inconsistencies and it's poorly realized. Especially compared to various goals that were proclaimed in the past.
Don't even get me started on the gameplay. If anything, it would have been better if the game had no combat at all. That only takes away from it and feels shoehorned in. If you can't do it well, don't add it.
It's a 4hr, linear as hell, game with extremely simple mechanics. And that's 4-5hrs while taking it slow, lacking sleep and being dumb. While i tried to push myself in every possible path and opening there is (which there wasn't any) and spending time looking at the environment.

If there was a to be announced Director's Cut of Scorn, I would love to see most of the stuff that was in the concept art be implemented into the game in the future like the appearance of more Moldmen, the ability to switch between a male and female protagonist (I usually call the current protagonist "Scornguy" like how Doomguy got his name from the title Doom), being able to visit The Tower and maybe an alternate ending where you do make it past the portal rather than becoming one with The Parasite and achieving ascension in another way.
