I saw that show as well. I was there for the Scorpions, I never heard of Bon Jovi before that and didn't like them at all, I even said to my friend "These guys are going nowhere". Next thing I know, they're the biggest band in the world. I learned to love this album now though, especially this song and "Roulette".
The song was recorded with studio musicians before the the band was formed. It was included in the band's debut album snd we see the band members in the video, but none of them played on the studio recording. Funny thing: the bass was recorded by their current bassist Hugh McDonald, who eventually replaced original bassist Alec John Such. The guitars were recorded by then young session guitarist Tim Piercre who is now one of the top session musicians.
I still remember the first time I heard this in 1984. I was riding with a friend to lunch and he put this on and I was like who is this, he said Bon Jovi. Been a fan ever since.

Great reaction. Bon Jovi/Jon Bon Jovi has such great songs… I’ll be there for you, Always, Bed of Roses, Thank You for loving me, In these Arms, Born to be my baby, the list goes on haha
Hearing this song in 9th grade gave us all a glimpse on just how huge Bon Jovi and his band would become thru the 80's. What a great track to start with, right from the beginning. Would love to hear you go thru his catalog, lots of material on his next album, the sophomore effort that really broke them out, 7800 degree Fahrenheit. "In and out of Love", "Only Lonely" or "Silent Night" would all be great review tracks from it. Then of course the junior effort from 1986 Slippery When Wet which was pretty much an album full of top 10 hits. Tracks like "You Give Love a Bad Name", "Never Say Goodbye", "Wanted Dead or Alive" or "You Give Love a Bad Name" would make for awesome review material.
Happy Sunday, Sam and Phil. Great reaction today! Bon Jovi has such a huge resume of bangers to choose from. This was his first, from their first album. However, he/they didn't really explode onto the scene until their album "Slippery When Wet'. The rest is rock history. My personal favorite from them is "Bed Of Roses." Hopefully, you'll react to that one day. 😁⚘️
Love the frantic, "running" pace of this song, accentuates the girl running from an unsatisfactory home to a life on the streets. Thanks for your reaction.
You Give Love A Bad Name or Born to be my baby Are two more upbeat,l Bangers from Bon Jovi. You give love a bad name was the first number one song on the music charts. You could go almost a month with just their catalog. Great band and thank you for this reaction!
They filmed the video and the band whom didnt record the song it was with studio muscians prior to the bands formation in 1983 ,and the second single was she dont know me,which is actually a cover and the only song till this day that jon didnt write or co write .my fav on this record is a song called roulette .
Phil you mentioned the music today is the same ole same ole. I love how much you are both enjoying this music journey. You seem to truly get why we all live for this music we all grew up with. Thanks for all the great reactions.
The "run run run run run run runaway" part might be a reference to a much older song also called Runaway. I looked it up and what comes up is. Del Shannon's "Runaway" from 1961. This is a song that used to be played often on an oldies station that my grandparents often listened to, which is where I remembered that first bit of info from.
"Runaway" was originally recorded in 1981 for Jon's "Power Station Demos" at the beginning of his career, which was backed by session musicians. This version is a band version from their debut album. Whenever I'm asked to describe Bon Jovi's style over the first 2 albums, I compare them to a cross between Journey and Bruce Springsteen.

No it was a solo record that Jon got radio stations to play when he was still an unknown kid, which garnered first interest in him and won a radio contest. Because the song found success, he then had to put together a band. He then re-released the song on the first band album.

I saw Bon Jovi open for the Scorpions in Rochester, NY. in 1984 when I was stationed in upstate NY. in the army. It was my first concert and was a great show.
As someone who spent his formative years in New Jersey and most of his misspent youth in Asbury Park hanging out at The Stone Pony and Convention Hall checking out Bruce Springsteen or Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, I never saw Bon Jovi or John Bongiovi and the Wild Ones early on playing at the Fast Lane down the street from the Stone Pony. That crowd was a few years younger, and from up north of us locals.
The guys in the video are the band members who we know as Bon Jovi. But, the song was recorded by guys he knew from the recording studio. After recording the songs, he went out and made the band. I think they told the girl in the video to give an intense look...but it comes off as Exorcist.
You're right, music now sounds the same, and there's data to back that up. There was a huge study where they fed 1/2 million albums into a computer program which showed that diversity of notes/chords etc has drastically been lost, and that many songs now use the same exact sounds/chords/whole runs in many, many songs...they literally sound the same! They used 50 yrs of music and it's gotten more simplified as time has gone by. It's very noticeable as you get to the mid-90s and it's why the 60s/70s/80s are considered the golden era of modern music, so much diversity, creativity & unique music. I'm so glad to have been born in the 60s.

@chiefsohcahtoa3285 totally agree, after High and Dry from Def Leppard they became too poppy, but I did see them on the Pyromania tour and they played songs from their first two albums so that was good!
