I met him over a decade ago at a clinic in Lexington KY. There was a huge line for autographs, and the guy was absolutely awesome to every single person in the line. I'll never forget how patient he was with everyone, and how down to earth he was. Oh, the clinic was awesome too
@@Jimbo386000 it was on UK's campus, and probably around 2005ish. There was a long line of people that he met. I vaguely remember him drumming on a chair to show us something during the clinic
ponder85 No way! I remember him doing the chair thing. I was really young though. But that’s not where I met him, I met him at a funeral for a local drummer where Steve and a few other people played and we had this big celebration of his life.
Thanks for doing this! During sections of this, Gadd plays straight sixteenth notes on the bass drum, using a heel-toe technique, that is not notated here.
I wonder how Steve Gadd feels about Blue Devils playing this in Legend of a One Eyed Sailor. I would love to see or hear footage of when he played in corps.
Well considering that this rhythm has been out since 1952 or so (and Chuck Mangione used it to open "Legend Of The One Eyed Sailor" back in the 1970s) I'd say that he might not have a problem with it. But now that I have your attention...........How do you count the 1st measure at 2:14? I see eight 32nd notes (1st beat), eight 16th notes (2nd and 3rd beat), and two more 16th notes (4th beat). But there should be something after that last pair of 16th notes.
Measure 16, beats three and four - he plays the bass drum on every sixteenth note. You can see the close up of his right foot doing this starting at 0:58
I was doing it in the 80's! :-) One of my all-time favorites--saw him up here at Yoshi's a couple years ago, and a great surprise to see him with Clapton last year--excellent show! Some licks similar to the "Stevie Gadd on the drums!" Simon and Garfunkel Concert in Central Park.
I'm using a 1919 Ludwig pedal that's made for heel down but also found it's unbelievable for the sliding and rocking motion and feel s like butter!!!!That's a Rap, oh btw Steve was doing that heel toe as far back as 1979 to circa 1981!! Fact!!
I dont have the the book of the instructional vid "close up". Is this solo transcript exactly the same as in the close up book/vid or is this an altered version?
There are errors in the transcription. For example, the snare and bass drum unison in bar 25 is not played. Bass drum sounds without snare and the snare hit should be one 32 note before that.
@Trevian Harrell There are four 32 notes before that bass drum hit... the two snare hits seen in the transcription plus a hi-hat hit and a snare hit after that. Thanks
I recognize at least 2 combinations in here.......... 0:17 - 1:01 is the beginning of "Legend Of The One Eyed Sailor" and the one between 1:44 and 2:02 can be heard at the end of "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" during the Simon and Garfunkel Concert In Central Park way back in 1981.
this is from a popular rudimental solo called "crazy army" : ua-cam.com/video/vcNK0y8ta4Y/v-deo.html i thought it was funny that BD played this as their opener, as if to tick the "traditional rudiments" box on the judge's sheet hehe
If anyone keeps u playing when you're old it's this guy,so inspiring
Love the way Steve plays. I’m proud to say I’ve met him once and the dude is as cool as his drumming style.

Great drummer! Love you Steve❤
Oh my god..
That one is cool..
Legend 🔥🔥
Wish I’d seen Gadd play as a kid. Then I could have quit drumming and been an engineer.
nope. That's cool drumming even as a low-skilled casual.
Superb comment! 😂
You should be inspired by his playing, watched this and immediately hopped on the kit 🤙
I don’t get how people see someone good at their craft and it makes them want to quit. You should be inspired

He was part of the picture when they did it. Not sure how involved he was, but BD definitely got Gadd's "blessing"
@@nakedfaves The last note on the 4e is a dotted 8th note originally. (There are some more mistakes in the transcription;)
It Chuck’s drum part to begin with.
He does this solo thing at the buddy rich memorial solo alongside weckl and coliuta

A brilliant piece to practice drummer. For a beginner, nail the first half and you're on your way. Nail the whole track you're an expert.
Fantastic Thank You. May I have the pdf to study it?
Great solo

Crazy Army sounds different here. Sounds like the 7-stroke rolls are replaced with 5-stroke rolls.
dagambler999 it’s 7 stroke rolls in triplets
just play by ear.
