I’m listening for the first time. Had to take a break! (And am often interrupted by UA-cam ads as well.)
Thankfully Pema’s way of communicating is much easier for me to relate to than any other Buddhist teacher! So exciting to connect with her again after no contact for a long time!

I love how she keeps saying "It's not a one-shot deal" and there's longing in her voice when she says "Oh if only it was"... After 20 years meditating I know I have to hear this over and over, eh! There is much gratitude here for Pema's humble and beautifully clear teaching

I’m sitting on my front porch with morning sunlight and birdsong streaming through the trees - so thankful for Pema and all her teachers and how their teachings have saved me in so many ways and made me more present and accepting and happy and awake. I would’ve missed so much without her and Thich Nhat Hanh who have helped me just BE. Just accept. Just surrender. Just let go. Just laugh. Just take it all less seriously.

I used to be a bad tempered individual, with a short fuse. Through meditation..it helped me to relax and be calm. I used to be angry about most things surrounding me in my life. First I used to just give my head a shake when unpleasant thoughts surfaced in my mind. Now I observe them. If I get a little angry or frustrated..I ask myself why ? I don't blame anyone for my past problems. I am the owner of those. I made choices that caused me harm. Only I myself am responsible for that. I took a good long look at myself. I am a work in progress. It never ends. I have learned to forgive. I have never hated anyone. Hatred only hurts the one who hates. Hatred eats away at your soul..literally. Meditation has done that for me. These are lessons I have learned..my lessons. Last..I used to be a heavy drinker, now T-total. I used to love meat..Now a vegetarian (I won't eat anything that once had a heartbeat), I gave up stimulants..like coffee. I am rarely ever ill, can't remember the last time. I view what is going on in the world as an observer only. I don't get emotional about it. I never judge anyone. Now I may sound like a saint..far from it. I am human and as such, I am flawed. Saying I am human is not correct. I am spirit having a physical experience..I am pure consciousness..we all are. We are one with the universal consciousness..and with each other and all of God's creation. From a human to a blade of grass and drop of water..worm, ant, fish, bird etc..we are all one . There endeth the sermon. Sorry about that. As I write, the words just flow. I am not usually a talker..I am a thinker..a listener. Opposite to who I used to be. (By the way..I credit my deceased wife Bea..whom I truly love..for pointing out my failures..Humor, is also important. Learn to laugh at yourself..I do. Then again..as my wife once pointed out..I have plenty of material to work with. Don't take life so seriously..it's temporary. What awaits us all is eternal life. We never die. Who we are..what stage in our souls development we cross over at...is still who you are. Your character does not suddenly change.. just because you're no longer in a physical body. This really is the last..I don't believe in hell. Unless you are talking about this physical world. Even then..this is not hell..though sometimes it may look like it. If you just become an observer..and don't let yourself be drawn in..you will be surprised just how peaceful your mind and life becomes.
Putting your faith in material goods only brings unhappiness. They are used as a sticking plaster to make you think that all is well, but it is a temporary relief. My life started going right when I understood that , if I listened more to that still small voice within..I would not go far wrong. The end.
    Had to say it.

You can't stop your mind from wanting..you can stop following from following. A though it like a leaf on a stream..you just let it pass. You don't follow it on its journey. A thought does not stay as a single thought..but breakes up into many different thoughts. They take you to places that does not fit into the meditative state. So like the leaf on the stream..let it pass with no more that glance. Bring yourself back to your breathing. Treat every thought the same way...let them pass.

Pema Chodron quote highlights from this video: “Anyone who has meditated even one day learned fast that we are almost never present.”
“Whatever arises is fresh-the essence of realization. Whatever arises in our body or in the confused mind, it's regarded as the essence of realization. Whatever arises. If you cling to it as ‘I'm doing well now’ or ‘this is how it's supposed to be’, that's adding something extra. If you panic or criticize, that's adding something extra. On the other hand, even the panic and the praise are whatever arises, is fresh, the essence of realization.”
“I have this lousy meditation that doesn't bother me anymore because whatever arises is the fresh, and I know that's absolutely true. I just have this hopelessly, unworkable, non-meditative mind, and I've devoted my whole life to it and talked to millions of people about it, but it's like completely absurd.”
“The few people I've met in my life that I consider to be completely awake, they learn to stay. That's what you feel, you feel the sense of eternal present. They don't go off anywhere like we do, they just stay. That seems to be what enlightenment is; it's the simplest thing and the most profound thing at the same time.“
“In the Buddhist teachings, I say that the root of the problem is actually self-absorption, this fear of being present.”
“There's a lot of ways to talk about ego clinging, but in essence, it's the fact that we are never present. There's a sort of deep-seated almost compulsion to distract ourselves.”
“We're always seeking ground-that's the basis of what we call self-absorption or ego-clinging-always seeking something to hold on to. What the Buddha's teachings say is the fundamental state is always changing, fluid and open. That the natural state is that it's unfixated and open, and there really is nothing to hold on to. This is not bad news, and there is no reason to freak out about this, but we all seem to be programmed in denial. We don't like the insecurity. Someone said insecurity is ego’s take on the wide-open, clear, unfettered, fresh space, and we find that extremely uncomfortable.”
“What we train in is not struggling.”
“The gift that I've experienced is that whatever is happening, if you don't judge it, then there's some kind of ease with whatever happens. But if you call it ‘good’ or ‘bad’, then you begin to get into this kind of war with yourself.”
“You have this direct experience. And what is experiencing? That's your wisdom, that's the space that always exists in your mind-the ability to just have a direct perception.”
“Crisis, trauma, a lot of pain of some kind-people who have this are usually the ones who get really serious about the spiritual path and are highly motivated to learn to stay. It's a blessing in disguise; I think a lot of the spiritual path is about blessings in disguise.”
“Begin to connect with the open, unobstructed, clarity of your own being and of every moment.”
“I'm glad to be alive to agreeable and glad to be alive to disagreeable, and I'm glad to be alive to sour and sweet, and tingly and itchy and refreshing, and cold and hot, and the whole thing.”
“The present moment is the doorway to liberation, vastness, unobstructed quality of our mind.”
“The whole point is to notice what's happening with kindness, sense of humor, gentle touch, but also be almost ruthlessly honest moving toward the place of no self-deception or nothing to hide from yourself. If you can combine that moving in the direction of nothing to hide from yourself with humor and loving kindness then the whole thing begins to transform your being.”
“It’s not really trying to cast something out, but about seeing clearly and fully experiencing.”

I meditate. In meditation, there is awareness, full awareness, of sound and whatever. There is no cell of happiness, or pain, or whatever. The mind is quiet, with no thought, no thing, no enlightenment, no ignorance, just being there. There is just the subtle. But, when one moves out of meditation, encounters people, or someone seeks my opinion, the gross mind quivers between the openness of its meditative nature, and the reality that it has to respond in keeping with its understanding of the desires of the other, as quietness is not the nature of the other, be it a life partner, a fake sanyasi, or anything. There is thus engagement with gross mind, and quivers for the very subtle mind.. Dillemma remains.

    • @missdinkelgodis
      @missdinkelgodis 6 років тому +5

This describes my experience exactly from a year ago. But the mind and awareness are not at war. Let the mind settle into the quiet and its words become the elongation of it. Try to live your life as a celebration of awareness and the truth you know from there. You are now on the next part of your journey :)

Profound thanks for making this extraordinary teaching available to us via the net.
UA-cam, however, has its own idiosyncratic algorithm for determining the sequence of how Pema Chodron's talks are posted. Would that the teaching were simply listed in date order--but no! They are NEVER in the same order two consecutive days in a row and bookmarks are useless. Often enough it doesn't matter-to listen to the Dharma is always a joy!-but other times she might lay a foundation for a topic and then in closing mention developing it further "this afternoon" (or whatever). But how on earth are we to know what comes next from however UA-cam is guessing on what's popular today (or serving me what UA-cam suspects I might like based on some other word I might have used in some random Google search)?
    So my question is this:
Please, can someone tell me the title (or perhaps offer some hint or searchable term) for finding the talk that follows "How To Connect With The Open Unobstructed Clarity Of Your Own Being In Every Moment?" The entire sequence of what comes before and after would, of course, be wonderful.
    With deepest bows - - -

      Dear Gordon -
understanding your desire for 'structure' very much. Reflecting on it, I would try to involve Pema Chödrons topic here; *every* thing or situation is fresh (information) with the potential content of leading us to further heart growth.
      With sincere greetings!

I wonder if Pema ever had the Silence hear _her._ I remember years ago unbidden (while at the factory of all places) a Living Silence descended/upwelled from within and without, throughout my consciousness, thrumming. A ringingless-ringing, motionless-movement. Infinite pregnant potential, Pure Void of Infinite Frequency. Stuck with me a full five minutes before gently receding into memory.
I'd like to say that I know better, than to try dog-paddling my way back to that state to retain it permanently, but I'd be lying. Nonetheless it appears such Grace can never be invoked or attained, achieved, acquired. It can only acquire you, _own_ you. You cannot own _It._ Seems capricious. Like lightning.
Except that you could stand 10 years in a treeless field with the sky flashing electric, holding a 20 foot copper pipe into the sky, and never get struck.

    i love Pema
but sometimes when she is speaking about the many ways in which we run from our deepest fears I have this thought, that her whole beginning was to become a nun after he husband, her trusted friend and lover and children's father betrayed her deeply ... so what would be the best way to avoid EVER risking having to feel that betrayed again, eomtionally, sexually, in the most intimate sense ....by a man ... well, become a nun ! .. and in this respect , Buddhism itself may potentially be her escape from the groundlessness of suffering ... if she knew TRUE forgiveness, true healing, wouldnt she have been able to return to a relationship again ratehr than running into celibacy and spiritual retreat ? Its just a question really

This is a serious question: If meditation is so simple, why do people need to study with masters?

    • @aurorarivendale3490
      @aurorarivendale3490 6 років тому +6

If you are serious, I would say that meditation is subtle and it is easy to fall off the path, so learning with a teacher, someone who has practiced and knows the benefit of long practice and work and openness this gives you aid in your own attention and your own path. Few have the ability to focus and concentrate and know their limits. A good teacher or master will be able to help you on your journey.

My insight is that most people approach meditation with their mind, as opposed to approaching it with awareness, and when we approach meditation with the mind, we want to control and evaluate it. Approaching meditation with awareness (which is exactly what meditation is) - simply abiding in awareness, there is no effort to control or evaluate meditation, everything is simply allowed to be. So when we approach meditation with the mind, it is effortless.

@@louisar4227 Yes concepts are simple. Masters are those with experience and sufficient mastery of language to convey that experience. They struggled and gained experience of understanding nuances of overcoming ego - enough to put into words that may touch you. Masters are not those that transform directly but inspire and facilitate.

Her teaching is compassionate and true. However there is a point when it is no longer up to the alcoholic when or how he/she will quit drinking. No amount of awareness will cure them. God or faith or poverty of the soul will do it's worst and best to them. And then if one is still breathing, life will continue.
