I made the switch to short scale basses in 2007 or so, and never looked back. I'm 6'3" with longer than average arms, so the reach has never been an issue. That being said, having an instrument that weighs 7-8 lbs. vs. 10+ lbs. does make a huge difference by the end of a long gig. I agree 100% with you on that. The main reason I like short scale basses is for how they sit in the mix with a full band.
I really like how you discuss the specs and features of the basses, rather than just head-dive into "this is what it sounds like - now you be the judge". Great job! :)
Cory is one of the most informed players I've seen or heard from ever. This guy nails all of the facts about short vs long scale, strings, pickups, fingerboard radius, even playing styles. His experience is shining through and this is exactly what we need more of - real world practical knowledge and experience and less phony marketing B.S. Bravo, Cory. Great video. (great sound too!)
My 9 year old has the Gibson Les Paul Jr tribute. It is beautiful. He has been playing around with the Fender at a local music shop & he loves it. We are picking up. Jackson mini bass tomorrow.
Thanks for the comparison. I have a CIJ Mustang reissue, bought new in 2009. Love that bass, it has a lot of bottom end. Just picked up a G&L Fallout, getting used to the slightly wider neck but wow it sounds awesome.
Loved your review of the Gibson DC Tribute. I got one last weekend as my first bass. I couldn’t find many reviews on it so I wasn’t sure if I made the right choice. This review and the price guaranteed it for me (Guitar Center sold me one for 599.99 mislabeled or floor model I don’t know.) Cheers
$600 is a great deal on a Gibson. May have been marked down like you said for floor model or maybe end of year clearance. Occasionally you can great deals at Guitar Center
great job! I bought a blue one and put labella MUS flats on it, absolutely love it, I also now play my ss basses more than my long scale basses (gibson sg/mustang/hofner) , due to osteoarthritis and disc disease, + I LOVE the tone. btw the Boss bassist uses short scale basses live
Thank you for your presentation. My new Jag has a 32 length wondering what length string and gage to start with, thank you. Badass bass you got there by the way.
I started out on bass back in '66. I had a Univox "Beatle" bass copy with an Ampeg B-15 35 watt all tube portaflex (I should have kept the amp). I don't buy the propaganda that a "real" bass player must use a 34" scale 5 or 6 string instrument. Jack Bruce did fine on his EB2 bass and a guy from Liverpool made bass history on a Hofner. I am using a Hofner Ignition Club bass and loving it. A short scale is deeper and I love the depths.
I have the Les Paul Junior DC bass. The neck is maple, not mahogany according to Guitar Center, Musician's Friend, and other retailers. It also looks different than the body on the blue stain model.
For bass I go with fender over another brands counterpart. Especially since I really like the JMJ Mustang. Although I don’t remember a semihollow fender bass but I just woke up so…
Agree. I'm typically-a Fender guy, (just bought a sterling Stingray SS4) but felt the Gibson sounded more Versatile and closer to a Full-scale. Great demo brother. oNe LovE from NYC
I am Torn between: these 3 Short Scale"s: Stingray from Sterling by Music Man, Fender Mustang PJ or the G & L Fallout? Any Input would really Help this guitar player in need of it?
@@jagerking7020 Update: purchased a Sterling Stingray SS-4 = love it. The neck, fret work, sound & playability exceeded my expectations. I also Purchased a Rumble 100 - small, portable and a little beast.
Thanks for the video...I'm actually trying to decide between these two right now (except I'm looking at the Vintera 60's Mustang). Both sound great and I still can't decide. The Gibson is $300 off at this time though so score one in the pro column for Gibson.
Im sure you can comfortably play both. In my opinion there is no disadvantage with short scales. Only advantages. They're lighter, easier to play, very ergonomical, great bottom end sound.
Late response, but I will recommend a short scale for starting out. I bought a thunderbird bass to start with and it was huge, unwieldy and it put me off practising. I changed to a jaguar bass which is much shorter and it felt a lot better to p!ay, but also as it was smaller it was easier to move around the fret board. I made progress much faster and had more fun. Hope you enjoy whatever you choose though and like the instrument.
Can you do a video where you compare both with the same type of strings, so we can actually have a comparison of the basses. It seems pointless and unhelpful to have flats on one and rounds on another is you are comparing guitars.
Could someone help me by saying what are the width, depth and length measurements of this Les Paul Junior bass? I need this information to find out if I can use a guitar hardcase ...
I own both of these basses. To be honest, the JMJ looks stunning, but when it comes to tone, the Gibson DC far surpasses the JMJ. Especially in terms of playability, the JMJ feels quite awkward compared to the DC.

Thank you Cory, really loved this, using Epiphone and Gibson short scale basses for a while now and love the period vibes

Nice Job!!! Love the short scales!
Great video, new sub. I just bought a JMJ and contemplating a LP junior as well. Thanks Cory!
I would like the Gibson and your shirt please.
That is definitely a shirt!
Mustangs are always cool but that GLP Junior Bass is sick!
I've always felt short basses blend with guitars really well.
I have two of those Gibson's, 2019 & 2021 models. They are fantastic for sure! 😎 Great bass playing by the way dude 🤟
Thanks for the comparison. I have a CIJ Mustang reissue, bought new in 2009. Love that bass, it has a lot of bottom end. Just picked up a G&L Fallout, getting used to the slightly wider neck but wow it sounds awesome.
I have that gibson, it feels amazing and sounds amazing.

Nice good deal

Great review!
I love the look and the sound of the Gibson Bass.
This will be my next Baby!!
good reviews, good job man ! Thank you !

7.2lbs! I'm getting the Gibson. It's lighter than my six strings 7.6 being the lightest. My MM bass is 10lbs LOL my back needs a rest
Great review! Very helpful. Both basses seem great.
Great comparison. Both sound great, but I think that the Mustang is the winner, here. Looks, sound, playability….it’s got it all.
Thank you Cory for that, very well done! Oh and yes I own the Fender one and Blues and Mainstream Jazz sound perfect on it.
For bass I go with fender over another brands counterpart. Especially since I really like the JMJ Mustang. Although I don’t remember a semihollow fender bass but I just woke up so…
Fender offered a few semihollows a few years back, the coronado and the starcaster
Love a bass that growls even with a clean tone, seems you get that alot more with american designs
Awesome stuff!
Gibson in single coil mode sounds beastly
Agree. I'm typically-a Fender guy, (just bought a sterling Stingray SS4) but felt the Gibson sounded more Versatile and closer to a Full-scale. Great demo brother. oNe LovE from NYC
Enjoyable video. Thanks.👍
Great vid, Nice shirt 👌
I recorded many songs with the Gibson Les Paul Junior Bass and it sounds great !
You can hear it here : ua-cam.com/video/bL2JkLz8aTI/v-deo.html
I am Torn between: these 3 Short Scale"s: Stingray from Sterling by Music Man, Fender Mustang PJ or the G & L Fallout? Any Input would really Help this guitar player in need of it?
Fallout sounds the best but the gibson sounds great as well.
@@jagerking7020 Update: purchased a Sterling Stingray SS-4 = love it. The neck, fret work, sound & playability exceeded my expectations. I also Purchased a Rumble 100 - small, portable and a little beast.
Wish they’d sell this without being road worn.
Even JMJ wanted a non-relic'd version and fender wouldn't do it, that's messed up
With better pickups and electronics, the Gibson could do an Alembic-y thing pretty convincingly. And brass nut.
I've got an eb3. But that Gibson sounds even better.
Thanks for the video...I'm actually trying to decide between these two right now (except I'm looking at the Vintera 60's Mustang). Both sound great and I still can't decide. The Gibson is $300 off at this time though so score one in the pro column for Gibson.
GIBSON ! ! ! ! There are tons of bolted neck Fender Style basses out there. Buy the Gibson!!
Hello! I want to start with the bass, I am 1.72 tall and have normal adult hands.
Do you recommend a short or a long scale?
Thank you!
Im sure you can comfortably play both. In my opinion there is no disadvantage with short scales. Only advantages. They're lighter, easier to play, very ergonomical, great bottom end sound.
both have advantages, try both types and see which feels and sounds better to you at a music store.
Thanks!

1.72 inches tall? I would try a harmonica
Can you do a video where you compare both with the same type of strings, so we can actually have a comparison of the basses. It seems pointless and unhelpful to have flats on one and rounds on another is you are comparing guitars.
this isn't comparing basses , it's comparing flats verses round wound strings.
Just wondering what strings to get on my string through mustang. I want some flats but sure what length, I hear shorts could be too short
La Bella 760F-MUS Stainless Steel Flat Wound 30″ Scale bass string set. They fit perfectly and sound amazing!
They both sound great- I tried a mustang recently, and it had a massive low end
Could someone help me by saying what are the width, depth and length measurements of this Les Paul Junior bass? I need this information to find out if I can use a guitar hardcase ...
It's probably not going to work due to the larger headstock.
I own both of these basses. To be honest, the JMJ looks stunning, but when it comes to tone, the Gibson DC far surpasses the JMJ. Especially in terms of playability, the JMJ feels quite awkward compared to the DC.
What head is that?
Darkglass Alpha-Omega 900.
just got a gretsch g2220 and this thing was CHEAP and sounds amazing!
I bought the gretsch recently I put tape wounds on it. And I love it
good video
Gibson does not have mahogany neck. It’s maple.
Maple neck on the Gibson. Mahogany body.
Gretsch g2220 is the short scale GOAT
Close enough that it does not matter.
What is this guy ?
Peewee herman
I think the Sandberg wins.
JMJ broke-in, not broken. Lol
I will never understand why anyone would buy the Gibson bass, you can get so much more out of far much cheaper basses
I will not buy a fake beat up instrument, whether it's the style today or not.
JDave Foster agreed
