Thanks! Yes, we did very well with our sweet potatoes last year. I've heard from quite a few people about the leaves. I'm going to give it a try this year. Thanks for the tip!
I'm definitely going to try this next year. All the sweet potato harvests that I've watched this year leads me to believe I'm doing this incorrectly. I usually save and replant the smallest potatoes from this year. (The size of a french fry). I don't get clusters like everyone else. I'll get one or two together then as the vine grows I'll continue to get one about every 10-12" or so. I like your way better! Great video. Have a great weekend🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
I think I usually start conditioning the bales about the 1st of April, or maybe a little earlier. I kind of go by the weather a little bit, because they take a lot longer to condition the colder it is. I plant the slips about like I plant anything else. I make a planting hole in the bale and add some soil. Here is how I condition the bale if you haven't seen that video: ua-cam.com/video/tredysH3-ck/v-deo.html
Wow, that’s amazing!! That’s one thing that I’ve never planted, so I don’t have a particular favorite. I guess whatever the grocery store sells..lol That’s sad. But seeing your results with that hay bale makes me definitely want to try them next year!! My goodness, those were enormous! Way to go!! 👍🙏🏼👌
Thanks a bunch! I've had good luck growing those grocery store types too a couple of times. I was pleasantly surprised by the results this time and am ready to try it again next year.
Oh no....that had to be so frustrating. We haven't had any trouble with Armadillos, but we have had plenty of trouble with other animals. I hope next year goes much better for you.
I used high nitrogen fertilizer when conditioned the bale, then I usually compost on top of the bale. Other than that, I didn't fertilize. If you want to know more about the conditioning process, there should be a link to a video I did on that subject in the description of this video.
All I can tell you is that I've done grown things in straw bales for several years, and I haven't had a plant die. I condition the plants first, before planting, to allow them to heat up, then cool down.
The left over bale looks like it's ready to be used as compost somewhere else. Great video sir. I will have to try this especially if, as some others have commented, you can eat the leaves as well.
Yes, I think the left over bale would break down pretty quickly at that point, David. It's one of those things that is definitely worth trying at least once. Thanks for watching!
Hi, did you plant them in a straw bale only or was there soil mixed in the bale. It looks like you have really nice soil in the bale. Love sweet potatoes and would like to try this next year.
I put a layer of soil on top of the bale. If you want more details, I did a few videos on the subject. Here is how I condition the bale: ua-cam.com/video/tredysH3-ck/v-deo.html Here is how I prepare the bale to plant: ua-cam.com/video/eUgUH2n9Xdk/v-deo.html How To Start Sweet Potato Slips: ua-cam.com/video/n9ZIzs9PmIg/v-deo.html
The tops is good for salad. Wash it then just put it in a pan cover it and in a minute or two it's ready you don't need to add water. Then just as chopped onion, tomato, ginger, lime or lemon some chilli and soy sauce (optional) salt and pepper to taste.
MAY planted 4 slips in the bale, 3 slips in front of the bale in the ground. SEPTEMBER Harvest in September. The bale produced a lot of huge sweet potatoes, the ground did not produce many, some in the ground did not produce any. Cut off some of the vines and root in water, then plant in other parts of the ground to grow some smaller sweet potatoes.

It's great to hear from another viewer from Africa. I've heard from several people in different countries that have told me about the leaves. I plan to try them this year. Thanks for the tip, Ida!
@@MidwestGardener you are welcome from Congo Democratic republic 🇨🇩 👍
Wow! Look very good, I planted my s sweet loaf ago last year, I planted tomato’s, okra, pumpkin , cantaloupe( my first time plant those ) and guess what I totally forgot to harvest the sweet potato😉,when it’s getting cold I don’t go out on back yard and suddenly I remember oh no I forget my sweet potato lol
Thanks! Sounds like you have a nice sized garden. Don't forget those sweet potatoes this year :)
Fantastically done... my friend try to put sugar mixed in water 2weeks before you harvest them.put daily and then harvest them it will be sweet if you boil them...
Interesting. I've never tried that.
Such an amazing harvest! It seems like the best method!
Thanks Michelle! It seems to work best for me so far. I'm going to try it again next year.
Chidav Agricultural Hubs , Yes, Me as well. Lots of great ideas on His channel. So I went ahead and subscribed to Your channel.
Hello new friend,
Ur garden look amazing i never see who plant sweet potatos in Straw.
Hello! Yes, it is a bit unusual, but I'll be doing it again this year.
Great video 🙏🙋♂️❤🥰
Thanks Glenden!
Great job
Thank you!
Wow! That's amazing!! I think the soil in my sweet potato beds is a bit hard. Harvested one bed, 3 more to go! I just may try a few hay bales next year as well! Thanks for sharing!! ~jc
Thanks! Yes, it seems to me that lose soil or straw that drains well....or at least that is the way it seems to work here.
Good job happy
Thanks Daniel!
Nothing. yuor cuontry lovely
@@danielnie Thanks!
wow lots of sweet potatoes😍😍 here in Philippines we eat the leaves of sweet potato.. its edibles,
Thanks! Yes, we did very well with our sweet potatoes last year. I've heard from quite a few people about the leaves. I'm going to give it a try this year. Thanks for the tip!
Thank You Sir. Learn do much.
You're very welcome!
WOW!! What beauties!!
Thanks Susan! We are happy with what we got.
The leaves cook up nicely, like spinach
Thanks! I need to try that.
Curios if you did anything to your bales before using them. I have heard that you need to condition them.
Yes, I do condition the straw bales before I plant them. Here is a video that shows how I do that. ua-cam.com/video/tredysH3-ck/v-deo.html
@@MidwestGardenerThanks ! I will watch as time allows .
Does the size of the sweet potato that slips are started from determine the size of the resulting sweet potatoes?
I don't think so, but I've never tested it.
Thanks Shirley! Yep, it never hurts to try different ways of doing things. I hope next year is much better for you. You have a great weekend too!
@@MidwestGardenerJust a few questions. When do you put your straw bale in place? Do you insert soil in the bale with the slips? Thanks☺
@@MidwestGardener Thanks. I watched that video. It will be very helpful for next year
Wow, that’s amazing!!
Wow nice introduction
Thanks Jayson!
Now i have idea how to plant potatoes
@@Jaysonvlogs There are links to videos that give more details on how I do it in the description of this video. Good luck!
Okay thank you very sir
@@Jaysonvlogs You're welcome.
I planted sweet potatoes in southern AL. when it was time to dig them an Armadillo dug them up and took a bite out of each one!
Oh no....that had to be so frustrating. We haven't had any trouble with Armadillos, but we have had plenty of trouble with other animals. I hope next year goes much better for you.
Hello sir new friend watching from NCR manila Philippines
Hello. It's always great to hear from people watching from the Philippines.
Much love them sweet potato leaves 😋🤤
Thanks for the tip. I've heard for quite a few people about them, so I will give them a try this year.
Puck off😂
Very good harvest👍👍done tamsak new friend here💚☘️🌿🍀
Thank you very much!
What fertilizer did you use? How often do you water?
I used high nitrogen fertilizer when conditioned the bale, then I usually compost on top of the bale. Other than that, I didn't fertilize. If you want to know more about the conditioning process, there should be a link to a video I did on that subject in the description of this video.
Here in Asia especially in our country the Philippines the Sweet potato tops/leaves are aslo edible nutritious and delicious 😍😋
Thank you very much for that tip! I've heard that from several others, so I'm going to be sure to try them this year.
You can blanch them. They taste good when they're blanched for only 2-3 mins because its crunchy...
@@kinsmangallo6732 Thanks again. I'm getting some good ideas from people on how to eat them.
I ever plant sweet potatoes, and the day of harvesting is the exciting moment.
I agree. It's very exciting.
Sir, I think that the interaction of the soil with the straw can lead to mold and then the plant dies, please explain.
Yes u can eat the tops and the young leaves.
Hi, did you plant them in a straw bale only or was there soil mixed in the bale. It looks like you have really nice soil in the bale. Love sweet potatoes and would like to try this next year.
I put a layer of soil on top of the bale. If you want more details, I did a few videos on the subject.
Here is how I condition the bale: ua-cam.com/video/tredysH3-ck/v-deo.html

Impressive results..what a great idea 😉😉😉
Thanks Jhinno!
The tops is good for salad. Wash it then just put it in a pan cover it and in a minute or two it's ready you don't need to add water. Then just as chopped onion, tomato, ginger, lime or lemon some chilli and soy sauce (optional) salt and pepper to taste.
Thanks for the recipe, Joan. That sounds very good. I will have to try a few this summer.
U can take big ones out put small ones back and you make second harvest again
Thanks for the tip. That would work in a warmer climate, but we just don't have enough time before it freezes here.
Yes, that kind of sums it up. I harvested those small potatoes today.
