crazy coincidence I found this video. I have this same tractor and am currently doing the same exact thing to it. I have the cylinder in the vise waiting for me for in the morning lol.

Haha, that's wild, youtube has a 6th sense. Good luck with the rebuild. I hope it goes well!
      Thanks for watching! 😊

Great video brother, mine has writing on it too but still have some differences in ours. My service manual says there were 3 different styles who know lol

Thanks for the kind words! Did you manage to get the correct seal/gasket kit for yours?

I ended up figuring out that there was nothing wrong with the cylinder after putting it under air pressure. it will retract fine it ended up being the whole system just had some much slack in it that it wasn’t moving enough to trigger the valve to release oil into the cylinder. Did lots of cleaning and going to try cutting or adding to the all thread that makes the adjustment there

@shoeyfilms5739 Ahh. Yeah, it can be a bit fiddly to get it adjusted properly. I hope it works out for you without having to spend too much $$

I see in your thumbnail that yours is 4wd I’d love to see a video just overviewing the details on your build there. I know MF didn’t make the 165 4wd or with a bucket. I’m wanting to use mine to move round bales. Westendorf makes a bucket for them. I’ve heard people say that when doing that you need to 4wd swap it as well so you have the structure on the front axle to carry a load. But if you look online there’s multiple picture with 2wd with buckets. Apparently the load can snap the front axle easier when hitting bumps and such. I don’t know, educate me.

You're absolutely right. They never made the 165 with 4wd. The first mass-produced tractor they made with factory 4wd (that i could find) was the MF 1505 (massey harris did, however, make some unique 4wd variants back in 1930!)
There have been many 4wd kits made for the various models by third parties, importers, and local dealers.
Four Wheeled Traction Ltd was a firm that built a few 4-wheel drive conversion of tractors and other vehicles, including the MF 165.
My 165 was imported and re-built as a skidder by a company in Norway, back in the 1970s, I believe.
You can still purchase conversion kits today. There are various designs for this, but your point about the stock front axle being a weak point is definitely true. Swapping to 4wd helps, but then your next weak point will be the mounting.
I think a big consideration for fitting 4wd is to strengthen the front axle mount as well. On mine, they just used the stock axle mount, which is not sturdy enough to where you should put any significant load on the axle, via front loader or similar equipment. At least not for driving with heavy wet silage bales, etc.
Sure, I could make a walk-through video of the tractor and 4wd system! I'll see if I can get around to it soon.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Sounds good, be waiting for your next vid. I’m currently having a pc built after my computer crashed. Gonna go with something big that can hold some footage this time and I’ll be posting again myself. I’ll have to make a video for you on my 165.

I have a IMT 560 deluxe 4wd that has a lot of the same parts as a MF 165, also took a loader off my MF 275 and with a little adjusting fit it to the IMT 560

I'm not sure but 75 years does sound like a long time to fix power steering on tractor.........

Should have it in a vice

Yes! I'd like to get one for chair-height work. The only one that I have requires standing, which isn't great for long sessions like this.
