To be honest I 300% appreciate when you make videos of the non face commanders in the commander products, they don’t get enough love and some of them are very interesting. Fingers crossed for the new Angroth!!
Definitely like the commander. Bought the Lord Windgrace precon for a friend and this as his commander truly shook up our playgroup's meta. Too many of us weren't aggressive and Thantis changed all of that.
The chaos it creates is insane, friend plays it. I play commander's quarters budget zur the enchanter deck in my play group so I make it even harder to attack me
My friend made this deck, and she themed it a spider brood mother watching over wolves and werewolves, and it has completely messed up many of our usual strategies of our decks
I built a super friends deck around this guy that has a bunch of planeswalkers so you can't attack them without being harmed yourself because he gets the +1+1 counters.
The creatures I would throw in are walls, creatures with flying, and infect. With black you can throw in cards that generate tokens for blockers and if you have enough, just overwhelm someone attempting to block.
One of my favorites and I'm glad to finally see a budget version on the channel. I think my Thantis deck might run above the average at closer to $200. I've got fogs, preators, -1/-1, and ways to force you to attack other people.
I built a version of this deck a few years ago with added Forced Combat tactics and it really did put a halt on MANY of my play groups decks. So fucking fun to play. I would love an updated version with any new fog tactics. Doesn't have to be budget at all but def still has to be fun :)
@@jonathanjonathan4908 This is true, but Thantis isn't the main win condition most of the time. Your looking to force your opponents to swing out while the draining enchantments are set up. This deters them from wanting to go at you, because people learn that you have a fog most of the time, but eventually they have to. I've won several games with this deck, but only once have I eliminated someone via commander damage. I made a few changes to the deck to make sure I have a backup plan, using Westvale Abbey and Field of the Dead to generate threats and flip Abbey if Thantis doesn't get the job done.
Awhile ago, I had been inspired by Mitch's videos to build a deck around Thantis...I came up with an eerily similar deck of my own accord--mine revolved around FOG, Deathtouch, life loss when attacked, and ramp....great minds think alike!
@@SilverWolf340 two other cards that I play in my Thantis deck are Overabundance and Trove of Temptation. They may seem like risky cards, but Trove ensures that Thantis will grow every turn cycle (my opponents always try to avoid growing Thantis) and Overabundance makes it easy for greedy opponents to overreach themselves and puts a fast clock on the game
Helping a friend build tribal spiders with Thantis as the Commander for a big duel of tribes and this should help him. Though as a note, Search For Tomorrow puts the land into play untapped, but great video as always and I'm sure he'll appreciate it.
I added a bloodthirsty blade in place of one of the ramp cards (I don't remember which one) because our playgroup has several combat heavy decks like Aurelia and Thrax. It protects me from a particularly nasty creature at least until everyone else dies and I really like it :) I think what I need now is some protection for Thantis herself.
I built a Thantis deck a while back. It's my go to stomp deck. I put a little more money into it and have a few other cards in it that I pulled like The Great Henge, Kazuul, and a lot of others with the same core ideas. People don't like my deck because it makes everyone hit each other and when they are vulnerable, I come in for the kill. Loads of fun.
Something interesting I built with this is something I call “Thantis Defenders”. Basically, I play a bunch of walls in addition to the pingers you suggested and stay relatively safe for a majority of the game. That is until Assault Formation comes down and all hell breaks loose.
Dude ill be honest I was in the process of brewing this deck yesterday and I came to this channel looking for a budget list and the video wasn’t here. When I got the notification I about lost it I couldn’t believe the timing😂 That said, thank you for all these ideas, this will work much better than the deck I was working out😂
Definitely an interesting deck. I do have two very cheap but useful cards given you have no other creatures besides your commander in here. Ring of Xathrid and Blessing of Leeches. The ring is a 2 drop equipment that lets you regen equipped creature for 2, and puts a 1/1 counter on it if it's black at your upkeep for 1 to equip. The blessing is a 2 and one black aura with flash that looses your 1 life at each of your upkeeps, but lets you regenerate the enchanted creature for ZERO mana. Both of these let you freely swing, even if there is no safe target to go after, plus they make most destroy based removal pointless. Obviously the two pairs of boots, lightning greaves and swiftfoot should also be considered too, just Sayian.
I like how Commence the Festivities and Defense of the Hearth can be used kind of a removal spell too, if your opponent attacks someone, you can say "Hey I have this, block this way and kill a few attacking creatures". Also Thantis will kill something if they are attacking you. Edit: for people building this deck: Isochron Scepter is an amazing card in this deck if you have the money to buy it.
While I wasn't going to build Thantis, you've got me itching to build a Saskia deck w/ stuff like Thantis, Marisi, Mirri, and Bruse Tarl in the 99 now...
I made a Thantis deck essentially as soon as the commander came out, this looks like a solid build, the only thing I might suggest is looking for some other cards to include in "Thantis JR." Since Thantis draws a LOT of hate in practice. I can say from experience as soon as she hits the table, people start figuring out how to remove her.
I like this. I built Thantis a while ago but I didn't add any fogs. Those would've been really helpful because I was playing against aggro decks. I wish you had included an infinite combo with spore frog.
Make combat in EDH great again. I'm surprised by how infrequent Retribution of the Ancients shows up in Thantis deck lists. You literally turn each attack into removals with that card.
Seeing as I feel like I have a good ammount of these cards (kinda happy i bought that naya precon now) and this sounds like a really good tech, I totally plan on building this.
Finally a Jund deck that isnt control of agrro! Luckily for me I just traded into a Thantis about a week ago, Mitch are you the Santa Clause of the MtG community?
Mitch i love build decks on a budget and one of my favorite commanders is Lord Windgrace and i like to see your budget version of this one please! He is so good, give card advantage and create a lot of tokens to smash the oponents faces! I am from Brazil and love your videos!
Amazing and very cool deck! Really good job! The negative synergy with Wilderness Reclamation is enough for me to replace Necrologia with Liliana's Contract though, which is also a very good budget commander card.
I actually added some boardwipes... (Well not really board wipes but kinda (whirlwinds, the one that does 13 damage to each creature, massacre girl etc)) because of how big thantis gets
I clicked on the video, noticed that Thantis had a black and green identity and said: "I bet he's gonna put golgari charm in this deck." Not even mildly surprised. Good video tho
This is just a suggestion to anyone making this build based on my personal experience. It works fantastic, but I did find a few weaknesses that my enemies exploited. My play group's power level is a tiny bit higher than the level that Mitch builds his decks at, so they tend to always have answers. Only thing I did to greatly improve the strength of the deck was add a few cards to protect my commander and a few to make her unblockable. I found myself in a few games where my opponents would not let Thantis hit the field. Many people just hate her ability and don't want to deal with it. I also had many times that Thantis got huge and my opponents had all whittled each other down super low, but I just couldn't get past their defenses to end it.
What about adding curses to the build to incentivize attacking opponents as well? I personally have a Thantis deck too and it needs a bit of work so I really appreciate this video!
Possible inclusions: 1. Rakdos charm 2. Varchild and Varchild's War-riders 3. Genesis Chamber 4. Akroan Horse 5. Curse of disturbance, trespasser's curse, curse of opulence, ect. All are for combo/voltron oriented decks which aren't putting many creatures into play, and rakdos charm is self explanatory. I normally wouldn't run the curses, but they're nice to bully people, just enchant the person you're most likely to end up 1v1ing at the end of the game.
Hi Mitch, Love the content. I smashed the like like button. All your decks look amazing. I own two of them. I want to get more of them for sure. An idea I have is maybe some time if you could do a top 10 of all the decks you have done this year. In my mind I assume you use some of these decks in your play group. It would be nice to hear like how did it it work out. Which deck was the most fun? which won more often? which gave the most salt? Which are sneaky good? etc etc. My favorite so far is Massacre Girl however it draws so much hate towards me I usually dont make it to the end....however its so much fun its worth it. Thanks.
Ahhh the good ol days where wayfarers bauble was budget and cards in the lists all had prices. I like how much content the Chanel has now but I miss these deck techs. There was just a different vibe to them.
Wow great deck Mitch! What do you think about doing an episode about Samut, voice of dissent? I think it could be a powerful commander on a budget, with big creatures and intrepid hero like effects. (I saw the last game knights episode but dj's list was not budget at all ahah)
Disappointed that I didn't see *Isochron Scepter* for updating the deck, nearly all of those instants are 2 or less so it makes sense to prioritise it for a consistent stream of fogs.
blesing of leeches has flash, soul channeling can be activated whenever. one of the strongest forms or protection could be asceticism for hexproof on all your creatures and spot regen. gaea's embrace and serpent skin are a bit cheaper and could work as well. molting skin could also work if you need to assist her sparingly. medicine bag for a colourless source or even ring of xathrid. if you want to prevent the targeting of her there is swiftfoot boots, mask of avacyn, and maybe ring of evos isle.
I don't really like Edge of autumn because after turn 4 it is a dead card that is expensive to cycle away. I prefer Kodama's reach over that one. I'm not sure if its the price that makes you choose Edge over KR, if so, I understand, if not I think its a mistake. "Reap" is a really good card, it's a sorcery for 1 and a green that says "return X cards from your graveyard where X is the number of black permanents target opponent controls as you cast it". most of the time, someone will be playing black, making this effective. I know that some games, its a dead card but I feel it's still worth it. it's currently worth just under a 1.30 on tcgplayer. So personally, I would be adding these 2 cards. by the way, Traverse the outlands is just under 10 $ so it could be in your reasonable upgrades section and its a great ramp card that gets you at least 5 lands when you have your commander out. This commander does look fun. I might build it ast some point, but I have other decks I want to build first. like Shattergang brothers which looks really fun, not sure if you made a deck around them yet have you? I hope you will some day if not, because they look really fun.
Why didn't Arachnogenesis make the cut? Budget? It creates one turn pseudo invulnerable damage dealing blockers which can block the following combat phase too AND it doesn't prevent the commanders damage. Arachnogenesis Instant Create X 1/2 green Spider creature tokens with reach, where X is the number of creatures attacking you. Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt this turn by non-Spider creatures.
I went with more of an agro tactic I guess, flooding the board with nasty pest creatures. Anyways favorite 2 card combo I have in there.... Vigor & Watcher in the web, block em and grow. I can’t wait to pull this one off! Anyways great deck tech as always!
Vigor gives other creatures +1/+1 for each 1 damage that creature would receive, prevent that damage. Watcher in the web can block and additional 7 creatures... y’all see where this is going. I hope this will get out of hand real quick.
Pardon my ignorance, but how does thantis' ability interact with the loss of life from the black enchantments? They're forced to attack, but not necessarily forced to pay life? If they choose not to, do the creatures still tap/are they considered "attacking" ?
