Ignore the haters, Nick. This is the best demo of these amps I've seen so far.
It is. And Nick is The MAN
If there’s haters of anything it’s Marshall’s US pricing, unless you absolutely need it to be 20 watts, I guess, but they’re priced out of the market. For 1300 you can get higher quality hand wired amps like Friedmans or Ceriatones. The Ceriatones are faithfully recreated handwired clones.
@@watersnortmoment3734 same with Mesa Boogie and Europe 🤷
Agreed, best demo I've seen so far. The fact that Nick is not a super skilled player is actually better for demoing purposes. There's too many demos of everything around that are more about being cool than actually showing the gear. Great demo, great job
Really showcases the 'dirt' well in the grit of the tone.
Whenever my wife sees a name Nick, she will always ask me, ‘so what did Nick want you to get this time?’ You have a very good understanding of what you always do or review.
Best salesman ever. Love the raw playing style.
On the Creambacks…
I bought one. I’ve owned all kinds of vintage Celestions and currently have a pair of original Greenbacks… the Creamback sounds fantastic!
Thank You Nick for another informative and entertaining demo. Life is to short and I'm to old not to reward myself with one of these beautiful amps.
Addressed the choice of cream back and lack of tube rectifier... also best description of how to use the channel patching out of all the demo's I've seen on UA-cam, excellent review.
Thanks for the Frampton patch info 👍. This amp is the best investment I've ever done. Thank you Marshall 😊. Rock and Roll!! Awesome Demo Nick.
The best demo of this amp so far
Great sounds! Nicely done Sweetwater
Good lord this sounds INCREDIBLE!!!!!!
Love this guy..why ??..He actually has a personality..not like some robot giving a demo. Fantastic demo of this gorgeous amp. Well done..oh yes I will be getting one..!
Love you guy! We can feel your love for Marshall! Just bought that combo. Sounds perfect!
Love your demos Nick😀👍👍👍
Great demo! You really made the amp shine. I appreciate that you didn’t go way overboard with the gain like 99% of the other demos 😊
Wonderful video. Covers so much Rock guitar history. Very well explained for a new generation of young players.
Those AC/DC tones were sweet!
Most comprehensive review of the sounds available and how to get them from this amp I've seen. Great demo Nick.
That's a lot of really great information. And a great video too, thanks for sharing 🤘
By far the best review. Important point is, that you DID mention the lower Inputs. Most reviewer seem to not knowing this.
Great review Nick. Really get the sounds that the amp produces. Best on the web.
You sir are a master of tone !
Great review Nick! Love your style and positive attitude 😊
Cool demo! Thanks!!
Thanks Nick,
I live close to Malcolm Young’s home in Balmain Sydney and I reckon he would have given a big thumbs up to you and the amp. Well done champion 👍🤘🤘
What an AMP! Holy s*! This is the holy grail of all amps to me!
This is the best JT20H/JT212 cab demo I've seen to date, very comprehensive, in commonsense language and with good humour from Nick. Given that Marshall products in the USA are well overpriced compared to the rest of the globe you do need to promote this brand aggressively. Well done.
In the comments sections of every Demo Video for this Amp there are people calling each demo the best video so far
@@adamwatson6916 Depends on how many you watch, I've seen 'em all and this one takes the prize!!
Gotta say, that sounds awesome!
Amazing sound
amazing tones
Great video. Thanks, Nick. Love this demo.
Nice review and demo!
Great demo ❤
Very nice sounding amp indeed!
Great demo!! 🎉
a fantastic demo from a player's perspective, and obviously a fan of the early Marshall sound ;)
Awesome review. Now i want to buy.
Sounds fantastic.
Now I want one. Not sure about the combo or stack though.
You know what you are talking about. So far it's the best demo of this beauty.... talking about the amp obviously.
Thanks ! A bucket of cleans and distort to you!
Love this!!
I have this amp, its Loud and Rocks!!! IMO every guitar nerd will enjoy this little monster. It's a Marshall!!!
Did your neighbors approve? 😅
Just got mine yesterday, and wow, it's so juicy!
Bush riff. Brave and bold move. 👍🏻
when? i missed it
@@aerialcombatAfter he played “All Right Now” he went right into a Bush riff at 3:32. I forget the name of the song.
@@renodavidLittle Things
What was that piece of music that you did the first Strat sample of? What is that from? I’ve heard it I just don’t know it.
love it! Hope you can answer one question: Why is Marshall in the US twice the price than in Europe. Even with currency conversation and blah blah.. It's not with other brands and also not that Mesa Boogie is that more expensive in Europe (fun fact, it;s actually cheaper).
I want this in 1w version. Similar like 50th anniversary amps.
What pedal are you using??
Not morbid at all... especially for a Grim Reaper. 😀 🤘
Don't cha get the feeling that to know Nick, is to love Nick?
Nick makes this amp better... change my mind
The demo itself is well made!
This amp certainly will find it‘s fans but for me it simply does not sound like a real vintage JTM45. Maybe because of the missing rectifier tube, maybe because of other reasons, I don‘t know.
It has some sort of JTM-ish sound, admitted, but not the dimensionality, the sonic complexity, the very unique „magic“ of a real JTM and especially not this outstanding treble-sweetness-bite-blend, which is typical for a real JTM45, at least not for me.
JTM for the poor, so to say, but hardly the amp, that started it all. On the other hand, for a budget amp it is too expensive.
My advice, as long as you do not own a vintage JTM45 amp, better invest in the JTM45/2245. This one has a rectifier tube, which really is an improvement and also sounds and reacts much more authentically to me than this ST20 does.
Alternatively a much more expensive Dirty Shirley also could be an option, if you look for convincing top-notch Angus Young / Billy Gibbons sounds and more.
But for me the ST20 is some sort of neither fish nor meat in-between amp. Similar, but not the same, sorry.
I also do not like the vertical Studio series cabinets, every average horizontal cabinet, equipped with the same speakers, sounds better to me. Any 412 cabinet anyway.
These amps are just about cosmetics of an old Marshall. They are in no way circuit wise anywhere near a JTM45.
The real reason they likely chose Creambacks was because Greenbacks are rated for 25/30 watts, and the amp at peak likely pushes over the power handling of the speaker and thus to avoid speaker issues, they went for a much higher wattage speaker to mitigate that.
Creambacks are also Celestions highest selling speaker, and Marshall can get a good price for buying in bulk.
For those that buy this, try getting a greenback or a clone from say Weber and hear the difference.
Amp is 20 watts. 2x 25 watt greenbacks are 50 watts. Plenty of room
@@rocknroll1973 I should clarify, I was referring to the combo speakers.
More to your point, a 2x12 of Greenbacks would be great, but alas here we are.
@@JR_Taylor shouldn't matter. What matters is the sound. Creamback is smoother, v30 more harsh
@@JR_Taylor nicely dodged? I didn't dodge anything. Just saying neither is better. It depends on your taste. V30 better for metal. Creams for blues and rock
sorry that question that I thought you dodged wasn't meant for you@@rocknroll1973
Nice! And it looks sexy in that tolex/ tweed mix
Great... now I have to clean up the sticky mess I made after hearing this beauty move some air.
Love the sumo however my question is can the combo accept an extension speaker cab in order to turn it into a 2 x 12 nowhere in the description can I find where the one by 12 or where it has an option for an extension speaker? Also, it appears that this is definitely a new construction in my opinion after reading through a couple of other descriptions on the Sweetwater side I currently on the Marshall studio jubilee a black one one by 12 I know there is also a studio jubilee out in the UK that is a one by 10 or you can get the one by 12 appears in silver black or snake skin lol but I am truly curious about the construction because this app actually has a tube rectifier versus solid-state at least in the description. It explains two preempt tubes two power and one ECC 83 rectifier is that accurate it just appears there’s a lot more wiring going on here than PCB and are they hand wired Tube sockets or are they built-in thank you for any responses or information you can provide appreciate the great demos love your channel. I love your demos, especially Man. You’re a great player. 20:11 20:14
When it comes to speaker cabinet speaker choices, you can always buy your preferred speaker separately with the knowledge that you will likely have to deconstruct and disconnect the stock speaker in the cabinet. I am faced with the same scenario with my Mesa boogie 1x12 mini rectifier cabinet with a 25 watt green back speaker that I want to swap out the stock vintage 30 with; even if I am faced with the need to unsolder the vintage 30 that is soldered in to the cabinet. Otherwise, I definitely look forward to completing the dream project.
For all rock ‘n’ roll gearheads, always remember this; experimentation is what fueled and drove rock ‘n’ roll history.
Why the concern about the speaker? Creambacks sound great!
@@asianaxeman being a bit of a historically correct snob, reading a book about the rock ‘n’ roll legends that defined the genre in the 60s and 70s, and after owning a vox AC 15 with an Alnico blue speaker; I’ve become obsessed with matching speaker wattage with amp wattage, (after finding particularly with my vox), that not only does it create perceived volume, but also a well described smooth transition into overdrive and distortion. With that in mind, I have a 25 watt Celestion green back waiting to be mounted and hand soldered in my Mesa boogie 1x12 mini rectifier cabinet for my Mesa boogie mini rectifier 25 to further explore my hypothesis and observations. I have also been listening to audio tracks of vintage styled 25 watt Jensen speakers that were used in vintage fender amps.
I will say it again, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jimmy page, and later Pat Metheny were my biggest documented rock stories that inspired my passion in experimenting with gear and ideas. All I need now is a soldering iron or if I can properly install solderless plugs after finding them at all.
I got the origin vertical 2x12. Replaces them with a 25w greenback and g12h Anniversary 30 watt
Is the H or M Creamback speakers?
m 65
So is there a tone this amp can get that the dsl 40cr can't?
nope. The 40cr does it all imo especially if you have a couple different speaker ext cabs.
Marshall just flooding the market with countless choices.
@@hybridjohn1 That's kinda what I thought. I have a dsl with the six button Marshall foot switch and I feel it has absolutely no restrictions what it can do.
@@kunkmiceter agreed. I currently run Mullard 12ax7's in V1 & V2 (V3 & V4 are stock) and have a pair of Svetlana EL34's biased at 35ma in power section. I also run a L6 HXFX in the loop using 4CM. The amp does everything except maybe modern metal but if thats someones jam maybe they buy a mesa(or similar) instead.
Much warmer than the DSL
Anyone know the slow piece at :30 of the intro. Cheers
"316" by the much missed EVH
Yes, and thanks.@@nickbowcott8822
I see you have an effects pedal on top to the amp head , So your not plugged straight into the amp ?
Hi - that's the Earthquaker Ledges Reverb pedal I mention in the video. It's hooked up to the amp's series FX loop. So, I am plugged straight into the amp!
Wish they came out like the plexi look.
Bleh, over it.
@@jc5512 not me
Gotta call my Sweetwater rep...
I suppose all of the distortion is inevitable given the 20w power rating ?
Yeah, if you want it rock band loud, it’s going to be rock guitar tone. But if you are playing at jazz band volume, it will give lovely warm cleans unlike any other Marshall amp.
@@tonedowne ok tonedowne thankyou for the info, I have been gigging a pair of 79 Marshall mk 2 master vol combos and still am but these days I'm finding it hard to lift them so the lighter weight ........ And if the tones are there then I will be very interested in purchasing one of these, best wishes, 🙂👍🇬🇧
@@Wooburnmusic Thanks! I would suggest playing a Laney Lionheart as well. Massive clean sound with a very British flavour.
I’m not really a clean channel kind of player, it the Lionheart clean is a bit special.
@@tonedowne Hiya tonedowne, to be honest I have to stay with the 3 ECC 83 and 2 EL 34 format as I know exactly what tones I can get, with the new Marshall though Im not to happy with the circuit board mounted valves and controls that may be soldered directly to the board but, having said that I will definitely look further into possibly purchasing this amp, I have used Marshall amps for decades and cannot get away from the E L 34 system, best wishes to you🙂👍🇬🇧
@@Wooburnmusic Hi, it’s good to know what works for you. I seem to be drawn to EL84s
What gets me about these amps is they not even hardwired. I'll stick to my Marshall 1974x now fitted with a Celestion Alnico Gold speaker.
I still think you need a master volume. It's either going to be 5 watts or 20 watts
Agreed.. even 5w when you need turn it up is still plenty loud…
My old eyes have trouble seeing what the knobs are set at.
jtm45 is 30w and studio jtm is 20w. That 10w quietness won't be noticeable (volume wise). Apart from small size foam factor, I don't see any point of studio JTM.
5 watt lowest volume
I’m just glad it was mitch
$1100 for a 1x12 cab? What? Love the amp, but the cabs are a bit high.
$1100 for a 1x12 is crazy. You can get a Friedman 1x12 with the same speaker for $700.
@@BadCat1990 Yea, I don't see those being a hot seller at that cost.
buy the peavey 212c ext cab for $500 instead. It has a vintage 30 and a gt12-75 and sounds glorious.
@@hybridjohn1 I got a deal on a 1x12 H and K for like $250 years ago
The 490 pickups in the les paul tribute sound wooly and farty. The SG sounds much better .
There’s no reverb, a bit misleading.
Nobody said it had reverb
I'd like to know how grossly extortionate they go for?🤔
there's literally a link to the products in the description. you don't even have to click "show more" it's right there.
The 20 watt head is $1,750. Sooo it's what manufacturers would call "aspirational."
TBH you will pay a LOT more for a copy of one of these heads from another manufacturer.
They are a bit more that the other studio series heads, but it’s not crazy.
It's not a cheap amp, but it's not that crazy of a price. The $1100 1x12 cab seemed down right nutty though.
Could most definitely have a pcb JTM reissue for that price instead…
They just copied the Fender Bassman in 1962.
In 2023 Marshall still can't design a small, light low watt amp. This 20 watter is too big and heavy. Yes I know it's a JTM re-issue but 4 outputs are useless. Useless cos they are not foot switchable. Blending 2 channels is also useless. Marshall could have produced a tonal clone of JTM 45 in a proper footswitchable 2 channel amp. So another lost opportunity from Marshall imo
I'm using an ABY pedal and now it's footswitchable. Works great.
Useless??? Sounded pretty useful in the demo
Besides isn't there a dsl1, and dsl5??
