  • Take a walk in Minneapolis, Minnesota USA
Today we walk around uptown in Minneapolis. We start near 5 points (Calhoun square) and explore lake street until we get to LynLake (lyndale and lake street) where we walk up to the midtown greenway. We see all kinds of shops, stores, and new apartments. Then we walk to 31st street to Bryant Ave and walk on the new Bryant Ave bike lane for a block before heading back to uptown and the uptown transit station that is currently closed. After that we head to shore of Bde Maka Ska to see the new pavilion and watch the snow on the lake.
Recorded on March 26, 2024 during a spring snowstorm

Wow! Uptown has sure changed from when I lived there. Looks like the Apple store and CB2 are no longer there, along with Caribou Coffee on the corner of Lake & Hennepin. Chino Latino was an awesome place to go for a drink and some great dishes, but it looks like it is no longer there either. Thank you for sharing this post! 🙂

In my 20's early 30 yr old I lived apartments right on lake street above stores. I loved it! Above Greek restaurant I knew the official Bill that was the owner of that entire corner. I'm talking about 30-35 yearsago

Hi it's me again I didn't get a chance to get your opinion the last time cause the live shut downs shortly after you read my comments but I really wanna move to Minneapolis by November in downtown to be specific but the growing crime situation is making me second guessing the Twin city any advice I'm a big fan of your work by the way I've learned so much about the twin city cause of you I literally know some of the streets names and restaurants and the downtown area cause of your channel keep up the good work

Hey, glad you asked! I was excited to chat about it then my battery died. It really depends on what you are expecting. If you’re expecting a place you can keep your doors unlocked and car running unattended, you might end up with an unpleasant surprise. I’d love if our society was that way but it simply isn’t.
Unfortunately, crime is a problem here and in most cities. We had a really bad auto theft problem post 2020 but I believe there has been increased punishment for carjacking and it’s coming down from its highs of a few years ago. Hopefully we can keep moving in the right direction.
With that said, downtown is one of the areas where I am least concerned as a whole. There is quite a large police presence and cameras everywhere. A few weeks ago the police chief came out and said how downtown crime is easier for them to punish because of all the cameras. There are parts of the city where crime is a much bigger problem than downtown. If you see a car of people with face masks on driving erratically, maybe a good idea to hide 😬
That doesn’t mean I don’t try to remain aware. Here and in any city I walk I am always looking for signs of trouble to steer clear of and prevent myself from getting robbed. It’s never happened to me though, let’s hope it stays that way.
Hennepin county had a very liberal/progressive attorney and is a liberal city politically as a whole. Because of that there are many accounts trying to amplify its every shortfall in hopes of political (and monetary) gain. There is a lot of money to be made off of angry clicks, comments, and shares of videos of violent crime. There’s a reason these accounts don’t share when criminals are convicted, they want people to believe there is no accountability which simply isn’t the case. That’s a whole other conversation.
I hope this answers some of your questions. Keep your eyes on the data and hopefully it will continue trending in the right direction.
I’m considering putting together a short video for UA-cam since this question comes up a lot (I don’t making talking about it each time though, just want my thoughts to be easy to find)

@@walkingminnesota thanks for responding to this inquiry. I live north of the cities & trying to find low income housing for myself & child. We both have additional needs & I don't have a personal care assistant or para to help with my child. Idk why I think i feel safer in rural or suburban. Maybe thats just because I am aware of the amount of people around where I live vs the cities. I do appreciate small town vibes but unless we live close to a mall or main street, it's more obstacles for getting around. Again thanks for sharing good information 🙂🤟👍

I was in Uptown 2 weeks ago and a couple of more storefronts were vacant. They are using colored paper on the windows now instead of craft light brown paper! Add a little class to the storefront vacancy. Some vacant storefronts still have their signage. Not many stores left from my walk in Uptown. My guess is about 90% of Uptown"s stores/restaurants are vacant now.

Yeah, lots of vacancies. I hope that the renovation of five points/calhoun square brings life back to the area.

It just doesn't make any sense. Highly area, dense population. Especially considering so many people in the area probably telework. You'd think there would be more people out and about frequenting coffee shops, etc. Terrible planning by the city with the Hennepin Avenue reconstruction - removing parking, and the streetscape is laughable. Also - money grab by building owners/property managers who jacked up rent prices and forced everyone out. Uptown and downtown Mpls - Nicollet - need serious investments to bring people back for everyday shopping/dining.
