Hi Brian...generally no, yew does not need a backing - the sapwood is a natural built in backing. This one was a custom request - adds both some extra durability and uniqueness. Also lets you build a more stressed design - shorter and heavier.
I think he doesn't want 100 percent of power instead of 200 percent of power and making a all powerful handy recurve bow, also he may add horns, that will be a 300 percent. 500 percent kill confirmation with a huge long range of shooting distance and accuracy!
