    nearly had a heart attack when those callipers almost dropped...good catch mate! Amazing amount of work put in and just a shame that it didn't turn out as well as hoped. That said love your videos man and so thanks for sharing !

      Ha, same here man, believe me! It's ok, not the end of the world about the result. I'm about to wet sand the calipers and give them a shot of clear, as people have been recommending. So I'll see how that turns out. If it's still unsatisfactory, I'll send these things out to a place and get them redone in the winter! Thanks for tuning in!

    Good job! You definitely will be more pleased with a powder coated finish. I've never personally painted a set of calipers, but have had a few PC'd. Much more durable too! Awesome channel you have! You've reignited my love of Porsche 's.

      Thanks for tuning in Jim!! I am going to try to fix them with some wet sanding tonight and some coats of clear..I'll see if that works! Like I said though, I'm sending them out over the winter if I can't achieve a better result :)

    Jakob -- You sir have grit! I was very impressed with your video and learned from it. I'm glad you posted it and am looking forward to part 3 next week. Your prep work was amazing. The job made me think about a phrase I say often that goes like: work is only work if you'd rather be doing something else. Your calibers are going to look fine on that beautiful 993 4S. Cheers from Round Rock, Texas.

      Ha, thank you so much! I was really wishing I had the results I wanted at the end, but like my friend James said below, it's part of the DIY game...And it wouldn't' be an authentic experience if everything turned out perfect every time... Thanks again! :)

    Dude! I'm totally bummed out didn't turn out as well as you wanted :( They still look great! I totally feel your pain... The plenum on the 308 was abysmal so I removed it, stripped it and crackle painted it and it sucked, so I stripped and painted again. Guess what.. Three times and it was still not acceptable... Finally had it powdered and it turned out super sweet and now I don't have to fuss with it, like ever! They will totally be what you want in the end. I suck at paint. It is damn hard to get right. Super awesome prep work! Great attention to detail. Nice video. Great as always. Franny

      Thanks so much Franny!! I know, it was painful! Even tonight, after today's video about wetsanding and clearcoating, I ended up spraying them AGAIN with VHT red and they came out fabulous! :P I just couldn't let this project go until it's perfect hahah. Thanks so much for the words of encouragement about the 308 plenum. That's the kind of stuff people don't usually tell stories about but I think are so authentic and interesting. Not all DIYs go smoothly :)

    Jakob great job, sooo I guess I'll bring my 993 up to Toronto next time I come up to visit family, and we will do a refresh on mine...since you already did the big reds, we can do the standard black ones...👍🏻

    Great video (and nice catch!), I'm looking forward to video 3. Although I don't own a Porsche, this got me thinking about refreshing my own calipers, that red is a great colour.

    Finally part two!! thanks!
    great work with the calipers at the beginning... although the result isn't the one you expected.. I also would recommend you to get these guys coated properly so a 100k dollar car gets a caliper condition you would expect from such a valuable car. Keep on truckin Jakob! I'm excited to see your pearl back on the road soon.

      Yes, the plan is to get them redone over the winter time at a specialist shop. I still was able to save them for now, and actually, even after the video I posted today, I ended up respraying them with paint from a can and they came out even better! Thanks for watching! :)

    i didn't even take my calipers off my 993 to refinish them. just masked off the area and hit them with some hi-temp clear coat spray. night & day difference. mine were already dull (pre-sanded?) :-)
    after painting tons of trim and baseboard in my home, and knowing my painting skills, i avoid brushes since i hate brush marks, and for the life of me always leave them behind. spray painting leaves the smoothest finish.
    i saved my old electric oven (we converted to gas), and want to try powdercoating at some point. mr. regular (RCR) did it one some of his parts for his vagabond falcon build.
    i replaced the a/c compressor and receiver/drier over the weekend so finally have a/c in this hot summer.

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому +1

      Yeah, in hindsight I should've maybe sprayed them, but even that, knowing how much time went into the prep and everything I should've just spent the 600-800 bucks on a proper job at a specialist. Good to hear the AC is back! Knock on wood, I still haven't had to venture into the HVAC on the car.. Thanks for watching! :)

    Oh buddy... seriously A+ job prepping-but brushing anything es no bueno for this reason!! I rebuilt some 6 piston brembo/17z calipers off a cayenne last year. I removed all the hardware, pistons, etc. and took them to my local powder coating shop. They media blasted and coated them Porsche silver for $150usd! Way more durable result in the end too! This was almost too painful to watch lol! You could try to sand the brush strokes flatter sections on the calipers, put your new Porsche decals on and spray with 3-4 light coats of high temp automotive clear coat. That should make those brush strokes disappear mostly. Next time hit your subscribers up for advice man! Those new Big Reds will look sick on that black 993 of yours :)

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      Thanks man! Appreciate it! Yeah, you know, at the end of the day, these can easily be redone. It was that last stupid coat that ruined the project..The G2 stuff heals pretty well when it's wet..actually I thought there were quite perfect in look before I applied the last coat..Oh well, luckily the brush strokes are only on the flat tops, so wet sanding and clearing should do the trick.. Thanks for watching and the post-advice! You're right, I should've hit up the community for tips....but you know if I was to do it all over again, I would've just sent them out! :)

    Jacob,if you want to try and and save your diy job you can let that fullycureand than wet sand them with 600 gritt and that will remove most brush strokes and then you can clear coat over the 600 scratch.

    Great video again, it's a same porsche does not run the brembo logo on the side of the calibre, brembo are masters at what they do, I have run them on heaps of bikes I have owned and on my current bike now, I also have them on my Renault megane rs265 and love the brembo logo you see through the wheel spokes.

  • @kevinbodman6620

    You can use 800 but 600 i think would be best only because you want the clear to have something to bite,heck you could even use 400.If u are worried about seeing the scratch from the sand paper dont worry you won't.

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      Thanks dude! The lift is a DirectLift 6MR-PRO and it's awesome. Plans are to sink it into the concrete floor one day, but I like the portability (it rolls) aspect of it so it's a toss up. I took the engine/transmission out using this lift a few summers ago. Worked like a charm! :) Cheers man! :)

    • @gplayjay3667
      @gplayjay3667 7 років тому

      Engine/trans out is the test! I guess with a 911 configuration all one is concerned about is the balance and clearance wrt. to the transmission. Could you drop a mid-engine on it? How did you build your ramps??

    Great video! This series has me wanting to buy a club members 964 now, damn you. There go my savings if he'll sell me it. Cleaning the callipers seemed a pain. Would a parts washers not be a good buy for you consider how much DIY you do?

    • @911Percent

      Thanks so much for tuning in!! Fingers crossed you drain those savings into that 964!! Amazing cars!! Yeah a parts washer would be a great addition to the workshop. I will hopefully add one in the future...I should've sent them out to get done is the real lesson learned out of this lol..what a pain the you-know-what! :)

    Congrats on finishing the rebuild, sorry the paint came out shitty. Live and learn. How many cans of brake cleaner did you go thru? How long did it take to do the rebuild (without part delays, etc)? Nice Blipshift M-stripe shirt. I have the same one in grey, 2 of them actually. Got a few Porsche ones as well. Sadly, no 911 yet and sold all my BMWs earlier this year. What's your BMW history, outside your DD? Any M cars before the 911?

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      Yeah man, live/learn! How many cans? like a dozen in total. The cleaning took FOREVER. I'd say in one sitting the rebuild took 20 hours - 1 hour draining fluid/compressing calipers, removing the spring plates (pita) and plugging the brake fluid openings, 10hours cleaning/sanding clearcoat, 3 hours prepping, 1 hour setting up for the painting session, 3 hours painting, 2 hours reinstalling bleed bolts and new spring plates. I'm also setting up shots, so it was much longer than that..always is! :P

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому +1

      Yeah, I'm a huge BMW fan. I've never had an M car as daily drivers, but was flirting with the idea a few years back to get into an E90 M3, but that never happened. I also came close to buying an e46 M3 for a daily driver once, but ended up with a super cherry E36 Cabriolet instead...I had an E91 Touring wagon for 5 years as a daily too; but sold it in Feb and I miss that car a lot. It was amazing. Now we have an E70 Individual X5d that is a great family car - my wife drives it more than I do though. I am in the midst of getting into another daily this summer, but am not sure what direction I'll go. I am eyeing F80 M3s, but that's 997.2 money so I'm not sure which would tickle my fancy more...But the jist of this ramble is that I LOVE BMW..always will :)

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому +1

      Blipshift is super cool! Love their stuff..just wish they had better quality shirts! :)

    • @K1dPhresh1
      @K1dPhresh1 7 років тому

      911Percent yeah, I sold my e46 M3 that I daily drove for 6 years. Had 116K on the clock when I sold it. We also sold my wife's 2012 X5 and 07 335i. So, I have an affinity for BMWs as well. I would like to get my hands on a decent 80s/90s BMW and slowly restore it in a few years. Obviously want a 911 in the garage as well. We'll see.

    • @K1dPhresh1
      @K1dPhresh1 7 років тому

      911Percent absolutely. I just picked up their "Air Cool" shirt and the "F-icient" with the Ferrari F40 on it. I agree, the quality isn't the greatest. And they don't have very many varieties when it comes to colors. They're mostly grey, black or blue.....which are two of my favorite colors but a flash of color here and there is a good thing. Anywho, good talk! Looking forward to more vids!!!

  • @thedownshiftchannel
    @thedownshiftchannel 7 років тому +3

    That's a shame dude! I've used high temp spray paint and had great results in the past your prep work was great

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому +1

      Nah, not the end of the world bro! There were two schools of thought on the self healing brush-on kit vs a spray kit..I decided to do the brush on, and actually it had great results after the 2nd coat..it was the 3rd one that put brush strokes into the finish...Luckily it's only on the tops, so I will be wet sanding them tonight and spraying them with some clear to try to fix them..and if not, like I said in the vid; I'll send them out over the winter for a powdercoat or paint job.. Thanks for watching man! Cheers!

  • @sinoperture
    @sinoperture 7 років тому

    I used a kit on my old car and they went smooth. You need a self leveling paint.

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      The G2 Caliper System is self leveling...it's regarded as the best you can get. I explain in the video what happened. The drying reactor in the paint was reacting faster than I could work...so if it wasn't for the last coat, they would've been pretty perfect; however, not all of the scuffs were covered; so a 3rd coat was necessary. I'm wet sanding them today and then I'll clear them with a spray. Should be good! And if not, I'll send them out over winter for a proper powdercoating... Thanks for watching PP!

    "A" for effort.......I was thinking maybe if you spray VHT caliper paint over your calipers it might hide your brush strokes......can't hurt...

    • @911Percent
      @911Percent  7 років тому

      I had a few VHT cans that I bought, but on the advice of the internet, I still went with G2..the results were actually quite perfect before the last coat..I'm wet sanding them tonight and going to clear them with VHT clear. Wish me luck! :)

    • @911Percent

      I originally thought this too, but after researching a lot, people were getting great results with the G2 kit. It really does self heal really well. The spray kit I was worried would flake; which happens a lot. I'm not too bummed about it, I'm going to try to fix them tonight with some wet sanding and some clear coat..and if not, I'll send them out over winter to get done at a shop. Thanks for tuning in!
