This is the best explainer of counter steering because you address the differences between pushing on the bars vs. pulling and what the differences are. So many people are horrible at explaining this.
I think he was pretty horrible at explaining this lol. The push and pull thing is right but he makes it sound like you have the steer in the opposite direction lol
@@josephbates7967 Pay attention when he's sitting still on the bike and what happens when he pushes down on the handlebar. The bike leans in the direction he pushes down. If the bike leans left, it turns left and viceversa. Same as when you're on a snowboard/skateboard or bicycle
Best explanation I've heard so far. Thank you so much. Just got my 1st bike and I'm still practicing letting off the clutch and just moving in 1st gear and stopping right now. I don't think I've ever been so excited about something. Hoping I have years of fun riding!
I’ve ridden motorcycles all my life so it kind of came natural and I never even noticed I was doing this until I’d had quite a few hours on the road. Once you understand properly how counter steering works and how it feels and effects you on the road you will become a far better rider. It’s something all learners should know right off the bat
great simple explanation. where virtually all other explanations confuse is when they say stuff like 'push forward with the left', which sounds like it's going to turn the bars if you push in the direction of travel, but you demonstrate pushing TO the left (90 degree's to the direction of travel) and not 'forward' per-se. a subtle difference. It's a bit moot though because most of us must do this as second nature without thinking about it anyway, else we wouldnt be able to take corners lol. Thanks.
@@jad2290good question, but i suppose the simple answer is that you just can't turn the bars easily at any faster speed and control it, either on a pushbike or motorbike, so it must become instinctive then ingrained without thinking about what you are doing, if not you crash lol, but when you learn a bit more about countersteering it does help you improve your technique. GL
@@jad2290 by pushing left you tilt the bike left and that makes it turn in that direction, leaning also helps, you dont actually turn the wheel with the bars like you do at walking speed. it's hard for me to elaborate more, sorry, but there's nothing to worry about you will do it naturally yourself when you start riding. ACTUALLY THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH, my bought a bike off my dad to get to work and was scared to ride it after he explained it, actually seeing it, it makes so much since now, finna hit up a parking lot to test it out before i go take the test
A lot more simpler than the random doddle some instructors tell you. This one instructor helped me a lot recently at steering and using the correct level at acceleration when turning
omg this video explained it perfectly for me. I was overthinking it. Other videos def overcomplicate it. Pretty much just like riding a bicycle or a stand up electric scooter when steering past a certain speed. you dont use the handle bars, you are essentially just leaning the vehicle. Thanks!
Only recently I've discovered that this is why I was feeling like my bike was an untamed horse I was cornering forcing the handlebar and leaning too hard in
been riding a bicycle to work and on days off for years. just got a kawasaki felt pretty natural to me. didnt even know it was a thing. works same for bicycle. you need to push to make te wheel lean a certain direction. so the bike stears itself.
I’ve been automatically doing that on my mountain bike and now on my actual bike since I was a kid-, without knowing you’re supposed to, I always knew I was a “natural” ✨😁😂
To explain whats going on, whenever you turn to a direction without leaning along the handlebars at low speed, the bikes center of mass is elevated due to you being ON the bike, and this causes the bike to lean into the opposite direction that you "attempt" to turn into, thus why its called counter steer, you shouldnt try to force this, just think about turning, and your brain will do it for you, just concentrate not to look like a moto gp driver and you will pull thru just fine ❤
You may not lean to follow a curve above 20kph. Just push the right handle bar a little bit, maybe 2-3 inches at first to test and then you will turn right. Push left to turn left. This doesn't apply when you are very slow or below 15 kph.
@@pedro_kapparosso I got my license yesterday, and they mentioned that we should learn counter steering (as the range wasn't big enough to go faster than 30kph, hence why I'm here) but I'm still a bit confused on the direction we push the handlebars. Do we push the handlebars forward or down? It looks like hes pushing it down but he says push it forward
@@jarroddt practice in an open area with no vehicles that might put you in danger. It feels awkward at first but you will get used to it. Push for around 3 inches forward and feel the bike lean. When I practiced it, I tried to push the right first and tried to go straight but I felt the bike going right. The more you push, the more you will lean. If you release the power of the push, the bike will go upright again. Watch videos about trail braking, too, but for now focus on counter steering as it is the only way to deal with curves. Ride safe, my friend.
