Also, a piece of wood which supports one mast upon the trestle-trees of another." so.. a boat part.. bo'sun is short for "boatswain" which is another old term for a person who did a thing on a boat i don't understand.

They're old-timey contractions, "bos'n" is "boatswain" (a position held by a sailor) and "fid" is short for "fiddle," AKA a violin.
A fid is a conical tool traditionally made of wood or bone. It is used to work with rope and canvas in marlinespike seamanship.
