Jay, Your the first and only person to fully explain how to wire an alternator !! I must have watched 20 to 25 videos on this until I came to yours. Thanks so much for the info !!!
Awesome video. I have done several alternators but not frequently and always forget which wire does what. This is the best video and most to the point I’ve found. I’m sure I’ll refer to this video several times.
Huh 🤔...Great explaining, this may have solved my alternator overcharging my battery and battery not taking a charge and staying dead after shut off...in my '84 Monte Carlo with a 305 1st Gen SBC, everytime I shut the car off my battery is dead and I need a jump. After a jump and about 5-10 minutes of driving, my dash lights, headlights, and stereo slowly dim and eventually power off completely, but my HEI distributor doesn't power off, I'm guessing running from the alternator as you stated about the ignition coil. I have a C130 which originally came with a 3 wire plug and idiot light. I was told a 2 wire plug was less complicated. So I bought a 2 wire connector and I wired it up exactly how you did with the 10si alternator you have, S wire to the alternator B+ stud, and exciter wire to the ignition port behind the firewall in the cab. I think it's the cause of my alternator overpowering my battery, I get 15.5 at the alternator and battery with the engine running. I say that, because with the C130 in your video, you have the 3 prong connector with just the single wire, that being the exciter wire itself...vs...mine having technically two S wires, the external wire from the 2 wire connector and the internal S wire within the CS130...or does the internal S source of the CS130 only work with the 1 wire connector ? 1 wire connector looks even less complicated than the 2 wire connector and you're showing and telling me that the 1 wire connector is the correct connector I need for my CS130 Alternator. I need a 1 wire connector for my CS130 alternator.
This really helped! I had bought an alternator with a similar set up to the first one you showed and I was wondering how I should go about hooking it up. Thanks a lot!
This is very basics and very important valuable knowlegde, straight forward explaination and easy to understand.. It's really helpful!! Thank you shared your video.
I found out about the diode after starting the car I was redoing and had not put the whole exhaust system on with only open headers. I was standing in front of the car and ask my friend to shut it off ...the second time I ask him he held the keys up and said I already did lol. Live and learn. You need a diode in your back turn signal lights also when wiring an old school turn signal on the column or you end up with flasher when turning
Thanks for this video, I have a 2 wire alternator from a 63 chevy small block, the motor is mounted on my run stand, I see that on the back of the alternator there is a wire that goes to the "+" side of the batt, on the white wire that you have where does go to. Big thanks...
Wow thanks alot for explaining how to wire an alternator it really helped me I had purchased an alternator and I was wondering how do I go about connecting it just a quick question what size diode did you use as I also need to fit one cause my system is overcharging please help
Hi... what alternator type is best as 2nd alternator for recharging lithium battery banks separately from engine alternator? 1 wire or 2? I need a 100A supply for 500A banks.
I have a 320amp alt with a 14.7 bypass regulator. Problem is when the vehicle is off, there's a faint humming noise coming from the alternator. And after a day or so the battery is dead. I tapped the excited wire to the fuse box for ignition. What's the issue you think?
What diode should I use on a 24 volt altenator, I have a m35a2 deuce and half military truck with a diesel engine, im replacing altenator with a civilian altenator, but it's 24 volt 70amp, and it won't start putting out power until I touch the exciter, but I want to connect it up and not have to keep touching it, so I want put diode in and not have to use a switch to turn on and off.
I have good battery, it's 12.6v holds charge I just need to test the alternator it's the 3rd one i installed now there's 8.8v coming from the PCM wires to alternator so when I ground the other wire to see if increase in voltage at the battery but nothing. Today I will bypass the those wires his time put 12v to alternator and tap the ground again to see if battery increases to 14v.Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Hello, i have a CS 130 Style alternator with the 2 wire connector plug. But my question is, do i need a alternator with PLFS or PLIS? OR is it the same. I have a conversion from Vintage Auto Garage with the PLFS regulator for my 1954 Dodge. Hope you can help me. Best Christoph
Hi can you make wiring diagram for dummy light and explain how it's works and if I want to put extra light to Indicate for my alternator charging how can I wire . Thanks a lot if you can do this.
10 GA should be enough for that. You can never go wrong by stepping upto the next size. I always use 4 GA. But 10 is enough for 100 Amp alt if the factory did it. I always just go bigger 👍
yes and no.. the alternator will charge in either direction but the stock cooling fan won't work properly if you spin the alternator backwards so it might overheat.
Im working on an old allmond bros light unit with a Lister Peter , just installed one of these alternators and stumped why on the alternator im getting 16V and on battery its showing 12V while running. missing a good ground on alternator maybe ?
Good Evening. Found your UA-cam site today. I'm attempting to convert a 1948 TE20 Ferguson Tractor from 6-volt to 12-volt using a Delco Remy alternator 12 volt x 105 amp, model DREI130, remanufacture #20402. Following your video to plan the wiring harness has provided good information. The connector plug has three short wires that indicate P-L-I-S ... How are these wires connected, are all three required or only one? Appreciate any insight that you are willing to provide. TTFN/CDC
I have the bigger alternator brand new but the old style on my truck where do I get the the one wire plug or better yet how would you recommend switching to the new better alternator? My damn battery keeps dying. 1989 S10 1974 350
can you tell me sir what is pin on me 12si alternator? be me I have positive linear voltage regulator inside the dashboard I use only pin 1 with baterry bulb the pin 2 is bend inside the alternator me car dont use that pin. I have unusual problem when I use hv capacitors on me ignition system the alternator back charges up to 3000-4000rpm the alternator light come up always below that engine speed so how do I counter that problem???
Why do the even have a sense wire? I mean why output is already right there next to it, why did they not just do that internally? Seem pointless, I don't get it. Edit: I do now. The way it's being done in this picture is pointless, incorrect. The sense wire needs to be away from the alternator, closer to the load or battery so it can see the voltage drop. Coming right out of the alternator it's going to be a false higher voltage. Doing like in the picture the alternator will maintain the battery at a lower charge, not optimally, but it will still "work".
I switched to a PowerMaster #67293 alternator with internal regulator. So I cut the wires to the voltage regulator and capped off three, and connected the Excite wire to the brown wire. Per your setup, I'm running a heavier wire from the Alternator Post directly to the battery terminal with a Fusible Link. So I have the old alternator wire, the heavier 10 AWG factory '69 Camaro wire and I was wondering is it now going to be live, dead or live only when the key is on? Could I use that wire as a 12v Switched Ignition source? Or should I cut the eyelet off and cap that wire?
Hi there - If using an external regulator on an alternator that has been upgraded with an external field wire, is the connector with the sense wire and exciter wire you show here still necessary or can you disconnect it? Thank you!
Please can you make a video on how to use a car alternator for home appliances or how to wire tv, cd player or any water pump to the alternator? If the alternator shaft rotate at 1200 rmp and produce 100 amp current then will car battery over loaded. Or is there any fuse and relay circuit to control current and voltage for any appliance? Thanks in advance.
Need to draw a simple wiring diagram for each project, labeling components. If you use indicator light, need seperate bypass circuit in the event bulb burns out. Different wiring of use voltmeter or amp gauge (wihich I don't like). Lighting circuits, starter relay, type of keyswitch used with start position or separate start button. The farm tractors I've put Chevrolet alternators on charge 14 volts at idle.
So irs turned into a DC motor ? Now a speed congroller and a piwer supply is needed . can you please describe the appropriate specs of both items. And would that be useful if washing machine motor is converted similarly .
One thing i can't seem to understand. The alternator charges the battery yet you plug the output wore to the + side using a conventional method. This makes no sense as in reality it is the negative the moves towards the positive. If we are to follow this then you are saying that the current moves from positive to negative. This is however incorrect. Im not sure if im missing something down the line. Can someone explain to me please?
2 things 1. While electron theory states that current flows from negative to positive, it's common practice to wire from positive to negative. 2. The alternator casing is touching the engine, which is grounded to the battery. Which is why you don't need a negative wire
On the older style alternator I briefly touched the excite wire directly to power and I didn't have the sense wire hook to anything. It shot up to 14 and a half volts and appear to be working great. So I hooked the excite wire through a switch to power and I turned it on and did not start the engine. One minute later there was smoke coming from the alternator. I quickly disconnected the excite wire from the alternator . I started it up and tried to briefly touch the excite wire to power again and the alternator will no longer work. I thought the excite wire was supposed to be in line to power with a light bulb or a resistor. I didn't use a light bulb or resistor did I ruin the alternator or did it coincidentally break on its own?
Suicided the voltage regulator. I need that 1 way diode thing he has. I have burnt thru 3 alternators and had problems with my engine attempting to stay on aswell. Never figured it was getting power elsewhere!!!
Jay, Your the first and only person to fully explain how to wire an alternator !! I must have watched 20 to 25 videos on this until I came to yours. Thanks so much for the info !!!
Agree best explanation ever
I'm the same as Ken below watched loads of crappy long videos just trying to find the info you gave us in minutes thanks bro, Paul from UK
May god bless this man....he totally helped my solve the problem on my 1972 Impala!
The Alternator on my ford 8n hasn't worked in years. Its missing the exciter wire. This is the only video that explained it well enough.
Awesome video. I have done several alternators but not frequently and always forget which wire does what. This is the best video and most to the point I’ve found. I’m sure I’ll refer to this video several times.
I really appreciate your video. It clarified where the alternator output wire goes. Thanks for posting.
In two mins you answered all i needed to know thank you sir

I need a 1 wire connector for my CS130 alternator.
I appreciate your advice. I was lost on my backyard project but I think I can get it going now. Great video.

This really helped! I had bought an alternator with a similar set up to the first one you showed and I was wondering how I should go about hooking it up. Thanks a lot!
An alternator (wired specifically, is an electric motor and my bike is an e-bike
This is very basics and very important valuable knowlegde, straight forward explaination and easy to understand.. It's really helpful!! Thank you shared your video.
I have a 70 amps alternator what type of diode is recommended??
I found out about the diode after starting the car I was redoing and had not put the whole exhaust system on with only open headers. I was standing in front of the car and ask my friend to shut it off ...the second time I ask him he held the keys up and said I already did lol. Live and learn. So does the alt have to stay excited all the time? Would it hurt the alt of the excite wire was hot all the time? Even when the motor is off?
Simple and to the point!
I thought i was the only one however it appears i have been mistaken much respect thank you sir
So the white wire keeps the coil hot. I am working on a diesel tractor. Where would white wire go since there is no coil?
I see an extra bolt on the back side of both alternators, will that be where u hook up your negative cable to the body of the car?
Thanks for this video, I have a 2 wire alternator from a 63 chevy small block, the motor is mounted on my run stand, I see that on the back of the alternator there is a wire that goes to the "+" side of the batt, on the white wire that you have where does go to. Big thanks...
Thanks for the video. Can you tell me where I can order the one wire diode alternator wire?
Great video but how do you know which one of the 2 spades is a sense wire? I have a 2 terminal in a T shape.
Wow thanks alot for explaining how to wire an alternator it really helped me I had purchased an alternator and I was wondering how do I go about connecting it just a quick question what size diode did you use as I also need to fit one cause my system is overcharging please help
Diode isn't to regulate the charge rate. Just to regulate electric flow direction. Your external or internal regulater is possibly bad.
Hello, thanks in advance. Sr. I just wonder where the white cable is connected?
Im looking to just connect on a run stand how would i connect up? Thank any help is appreciated.
If it doesn’t have a good ground will that cause it to die when I take it off the jumper cables
But what if I'm hooking up a a battery isolator do I still need the wire with the diode ?
How do you go from a nineties style alt to a one wire??
Can I plug the left alternator white excite wire to the pos side of coil
Thanks for posting this.
I hope these instructions apply to the ACDelco 335-1222.

Jay... I've got a Powermaster #67293 and I recently installed a serpentine setup which has the alternator on the driver's side. My old
Very Informative & Useful Thanks Dude!.
90 blazer 5.7 any improved or amps alternator recommendation?
Where does the white wire goes to
Where can you buy the plug with the diode installed
Can i hook this up to a small block mopar somehow, need to be creative wih making brackets i guess

What difference does the amps make cause I had a 22si and I’m thinking about getting the 40SI
I follow your blog sir. Thank for 💡
Hello, i have a CS 130 Style alternator with the 2 wire connector plug. But my question is, do i need a alternator with PLFS or PLIS? OR is it the same. I have a conversion from Vintage Auto Garage with the PLFS regulator for my 1954 Dodge. Hope you can help me. Best Christoph
Looks like you are using the L terminal to excite. Does it not need a resistor of some sort?
How do I wire my new second 3g alternator ? I have 2 3 g 200amp big case alternators
Is there a adapter to convert?
Thank you for making this easy to explain.
What size are that white wire
What are the specs on the diode?
Hi can you make wiring diagram for dummy light and explain how it's works and if I want to put extra light to Indicate for my alternator charging how can I wire .
Thanks a lot if you can do this.
Where i hook up white wire ?
Can you use a 10g wire on a 100 amp alternator.?

I always use 4 GA. But 10 is enough for 100 Amp alt if the factory did it. I always just go bigger 👍
I am going to use this for an off-auto project. Does it matter which direction the 10SI alternator spins?
yes and no.. the alternator will charge in either direction but the stock cooling fan won't work properly if you spin the alternator backwards so it might overheat.
Where does the white wire connect to??
The white wire connects to accessories on your ignition or connects to anything that turns on with the key.
Im working on an old allmond bros light unit with a Lister Peter , just installed one of these alternators and stumped why on the alternator im getting 16V and on battery its showing 12V while running. missing a good ground on alternator maybe ?
Thank You sir, great video and appreciate the help and explanation. 👍
We’re can I get the white wire at
What do you do with the white wire though I have an 1977 Ford LTD 2 and I'm doing the one wire conversion my battery is draining when it sits
One wire..to batt..one to key..that's the remote wire..one neg wire
Looks like the white wire is also connected to the positive battery terminal
White wire carries 12 volts back to alternator? Most setups it goes to the key.

thank you for your sharing about that.
Can you do an other video like that
How can you a inverter with it without using battery
No wonder these Mazda's white wires are burning up to a crisp. The diodes probably popped.
Isn't 10 gauge wire undersized for a 60 amp alternator?
Here is a chart to select which gauge to use. www.motorcityreman.com/technical-info.html
Can i use 3 Pin alternator (L S V) in my car having 2 pin alternator (L S)
can you tell me sir what is pin on me 12si alternator? be me I have positive linear voltage regulator inside the dashboard I use only pin 1 with baterry bulb the pin 2 is bend inside the alternator me car dont use that pin.
I have unusual problem when I use hv capacitors on me ignition system the alternator back charges up to 3000-4000rpm the alternator light come up always below that engine speed so how do I counter that problem???
For 10SI Alternator, there are 4 wires plug, what are those 4 wires? In your video wire #2 is connected to the battery via a diode.
The number 2 is the L term. Connected to this light?
Why do the even have a sense wire? I mean why output is already right there next to it, why did they not just do that internally? Seem pointless, I don't get it.

Very nice vid
What type of diode is recommended? 20ohm 10watts? Idk what to get for my 100amp alternator
1N5408 diode is what you want.
Thanks man
Where does white wire go
plz make a video connecting ,alternator with rectifier(positive and negative) connected to battery
Nice video

I knew an old Vietnam vet who could do that.
Home appliances use 230v or 110v in the US, an automotive alternator only produce 14-15v, in your case the amps are irrelevant
Where does the white wire go
Very nice explanation i use phone hedasets to listen to you. low volume lol.but like like like this vidio

Any chance you may have experienced exciter wire issues? Like the alternator fails to start outputting?
how to connect WIRS OF alternator mercides 300E 1987> no sokets just 2 Bins ( B+ ) ( D+)
You didn't say where the 10si white wire goes
So irs turned into a DC motor ? Now a speed congroller and a piwer supply is needed . can you please describe the appropriate specs of both items. And would that be useful if washing machine motor is converted similarly .
Great way to the jobs
Sorry, but you need to turn your record volume up so we can hear you. Try recording again.

Sir jab alternate ki gati badhai jati hai to aabriti bataiya
Good job
I guess I missed where the other end of the white wire connects.
How are we to be able to try the Generator when the man showing it don't speak loud enough to hear what he says.
Thanks for doing this...
And you guys are the only ones who make the 1 wire connector for the CS130 alternator ? Total cost is $40...yikes.
so what do you connect the white wire to?
On the older style alternator I briefly touched the excite wire directly to power and I didn't have the sense wire hook to anything. It shot up to 14 and a half volts and appear to be working great. So I hooked the excite wire through a switch to power and I turned it on and did not start the engine. One minute later there was smoke coming from the alternator. The white wire on the 10, where would I run that?
