50:40 While it's true that a lot of people complain for bad reasons, it's also worth remembering that not everyone is able to draft a dozen times a week. If it's really a 10% shot to get a busted rare, it's still only about 50/50 to get that once in six drafts. For someone who only has time or money to draft once or twice a week, those six drafts could be a full month of playing the format. And then the probabilities can also hit them going the other way, too. Across those six drafts, someone may play against 30 other decks. That means there are reasonable odds of going up against multiple 10% decks without ever getting one yourself. It's easy to say that the odds even out when you draft 50 times in a month, but that's not an option for every player. Knowing that you have the same chance of getting busted rares as anybody else doesn't do a lot to reduce the sting of feeling like the few drafts you were able to do were ruined by lopsided rares. Again, some people complain about the variance in Magic because they want to blame something for their losses or because they just want to complain. It's good to help those players shift to a more productive mindset. But broadly and sarcastically dismissing that kind of complaint doesn't feel great to me because these kinds of issues can significantly hurt the experience for less privileged players.
The amount of games Paul’s been playing really shows based on the stuff he’s saying this podcast. Easily one of the best guest podcasts that I can remember
Paul's become my goto for checking out some drafts, he easily clears my benchmarks for entertainment and you can't ignore his winrate stats. Hope he's on the show many times to come, the chemistry between the three of you is great to listen to - easy to tell how much time you've all known each other.
The moment when LSV casually dropping "Oh btw I wanted to talk about this manabase thing that triggers you so much" and Paul going on a heated rant immediately after while Luis casually sips his drink is just straight up chef's kiss.
Very good discussion today. Love to hear you guys discussing the set with Paul! Totally agree about the colours, whenever I splash more than one land in a third colour, my draft has been a train wreck (including a Dimir splashing red for Cruel Ultimatum). Also interesting observation about the ALSA of cards vs their win rate: Given the sheer number of Mythic cards introduced to Standard this set (about 120 from OTJ and BIG) I wonder how much this influences casual limited players into selecting them earlier than they should to fill out their constructed lists?
Hi Marshall, I was wondering...do you stream or post current set drafts or other MTG limited content much any more? I'm able to watch LSV and Paul draft on their channels (which is great), but I can't find anything current from you other than here on Limited Resources (LR is great btw.🙂I like your pace and to hear your thoughts as you draft. Thanks for doing all that you!
I have first picked cruel ultimatum twice now, both times never saw grixis lands and ended up in rakdos and izzet as a result. Fun drafts with sad ending as mana couldn't support the ult.
Loan shark looked so good during set reviews and it just turned out so bad. You can’t really take turn 4 off to plot it with the only upside being you draw a card the following turn. The only time it’s been decent is when I had several proactive 2 or 3 mana plot cards.
@@skullkrum20 I agree. The weird thing to me is how good Bonny Poll’s stats are and it’s double blue. Obviously the card is great but it pushes you into at least having a decent blue mana base. Whereas a card like railway brawler is absurd and only 1 color. Without having stats, I would’ve guessed brawler had 3-5% higher winrate.
Are the criteria of the Arena mythic # ranking system officially published? I was under the impression that they are a hidden mystery, but are ostensibly ELO-esque, like chess and Magic rating in the old days, so I am confused about Paul talking about not having a chance to outrank players who get twice as many drafts in. Is it a known fact that total wins is a factor in mythic rank #? I assumed it was mainly or solely win rate, with the adjustment of gaining more and losing less rank vs high ranked players. The system of clicks to get to mythic is transparent, but I would really like to know exactly how mythic # is calculated. It seems ridiculous and sus af if this information is not transparent, and it seems like if you do basically have an ELO number in they database, you should be able to see it, so please correct me if I am misaprehended.
I don't understand why, on top of the already large percentage of games that are decided by mana screw, flood, color screw, etc etc, which is probably at least 20% if not more, WotC insists on adding an additional 10% of games to be decided by stupid megabombs. That's not good or fun gameplay; it's horrible. I don't particularly care that it "evens out" because all of the time wasted on those non-games is time I could have spent doing something interesting with my life. What interest do those games serve? I seriously don't get it. Is there some userbase that's just clamoring for more games to be decided by topdecks suddenly 5-for-1ing the opponent?
My understanding was they had planned the big score cards to be in a set after Outlaws like March of Machines had aftermath, but aftermath was not well received and the had planned the big score cards in standard so they added the cards to the set.
High rare count and the increased power level are wotc distracting from the expense of the new boosters. We are all talking about insane cards, instead of the insane cost.
I’ve never understood why they put so much effort into making breaking news/special guests it’s own separate things with different card styles when they could just reprint them for the set maybe with new art like they did for stuff like abrade in LCI
LSV I doubt you'll read this but ABOUT TIME you took out initiative from your Cube, it's such a garbage mechanic... for the reasons you mentioned, but it also makes the draft portion less interesting: they're not color intensive enough. The number of times we saw you pick by default whichever 4-drop with initiative as a splash over interesting cards in your colors was just way too many. I was especially surprised to see you keep them in for so long after your eloquent plea to Ryan Spain to remove them from the MTGO Cube months ago. I think you said it best then: initiative represents the worst Magic has to offer, not the best.
A little less fellating eachother and a little more content please. I know it’s tongue in cheek and it’s fine in small amounts but it’s just constant in this video.
Please have Paul on regularly, he's great.
Fine
And tone down trolling on him, if you ask me.

Paul is the reason I am drafting again . Having someone so knowledgeable and charismatic teaching you how to draft is amazing.
Haumph Joins Up is my favorite OTJ card to build around in draft...
Road to rank 1 is Awesome paul. Ive been loving that content!
Paul's become my goto for checking out some drafts, he easily clears my benchmarks for entertainment and you can't ignore his winrate stats.

i remember paul from way back. awesome to see him battling on arena drafts at such a high level
Paul is the highest level.
Paul is the level.
Love the banter between LSV and Paul :) Good stuff!
I have also beaten the LSV Sucks account. LSV was kind enough to like my screenshot when I tagged him on twitter.
The moment when LSV casually dropping "Oh btw I wanted to talk about this manabase thing that triggers you so much" and Paul going on a heated rant immediately after while Luis casually sips his drink is just straight up chef's kiss.
Please have Paul on more. The teasing and back and forth between LSV and Paul is great
Collaboration is the spice of life glad these guys all cross over, wish Marshall would post some drafts sometimes though.
I am addicted to watching Paul's videos...and yes. The MKM Arena open video got forced on me and I watched every second of it.
This video has increased my win rate in limited OTJ exponentially. Paul's insights are great! Thanks!
Paul and LSV have that kind of interaction that you only see among long term friends. They are great together.
Great show guys - have Paul back often
Been watching the hell out of Paul’s content, and I love to see the banter whenever we get the 3 musketeers on a podcast. Good stuff
The Three musketeers of Limited 💪😎❗
Always love having Paul on, amazing episode and love his insight into the format, he got to be a lot more in depth than he is while making picks.
Paul laying down the knowledge is the best thing ever.
Love it when you have Mr Cheon on
Paul is so insightful. Please have him more often ❤
amazing episode! paul is an awesome guest! bring him at least once every set
I would love Paul episodes to become a regular thing
6:35 earned my like. That was some top quality banter.
Somebody please create the account Marshall Slutcliffe 😂

LR Cheons
Good to see Paul!
I love that Paul is there ☺️👍
Magda is famously not an Outlaw. So the sick of curve into Mine Raider is not a thing sadly. I know from experience.
Hi Marshall, I was wondering...do you stream or post current set drafts or other MTG limited content much any more?

Is Paul ever gonna stream on UA-cam?
Paul needs to come on at least once per set like sirko does.
Cheon should just go live. Real Game No Edits!!
Magda with the tapper or pinger in rw seems like it would work out. 2 common ways to trigger it every turn.
Love Paul!
I like that Paul doesn’t have a beard. So smooth and beautiful.
Magda isn't an outlaw (sigh) so mine raider isn't a good follow up
I have first picked cruel ultimatum twice now, both times never saw grixis lands and ended up in rakdos and izzet as a result. Fun drafts with sad ending as mana couldn't support the ult.
I had one draft that was CRAZY with Magda. 2x Magda and a Generous Plunderer. Treasure / Dragon city.

Ya it’s great when you stabilize and can get value out of it.
then why isnt thunder lasso good?
Meh.. it’s mostly a consequence of blue being bad.
The same card on green, would be pretty good.
@@skullkrum20 I agree. The weird thing to me is how good Bonny Poll’s stats are and it’s double blue. Obviously the card is great but it pushes you into at least having a decent blue mana base. Paul is dope, dude ✌😎✌
Yoooo cheon on LR? lets go
I wish you tell him when his camera is going rogue

This Friday I first picked Cruel Ultimatum based on Paul's experience and went easy 3:0
I got to destroy “LSVs_Alt” a week or two ago in draft. Was in fact not his alt, ha.
I had someone make 2 dragons against me. They also had t1 jitte. So i could never block them og kill magda with me 2 dmg spell.. i was not victorious
Let’s goooooooo
My understanding was they had planned the big score cards to be in a set after Outlaws like March of Machines had aftermath, but aftermath was not well received and the had planned the big score cards in standard so they added the cards to the set.
Very good
I think the issue is people love to draft but don't want to pay 10 dollars per try.
High rare count and the increased power level are wotc distracting from the expense of the new boosters. We are all talking about insane cards, instead of the insane cost.

Can you link to the LSV sucks game?
HAUMPH
3 full time magic people don't know between them that the big score cards were supposed to be an "Aftermath" type mini set.
Always new gigapede was decent
