I'm sitting here in my car in the park, listening to this while tears flow down my cheeks... currently unemployed and homeless (living in my car). Each time, I feel like "giving up," and feel hopeless, I look at the word "HOPE" taped to my dashboard above my radio, and I go on. I realize life can truly change in an instant, in an hour or even a day, and keep the faith. I know I will someday rise above all I'm dealing with and be forever grateful I DIDN'T give up! 🤗 Wish me luck!
it's so funny and annoying at the same time when people overusing expressions like "... is a genius" - he is a good musician, had his good times, he had his bad times, just an human, that's it :-)))
Agree. This video should have at least 10x the views. I went through a big The The phase late 80's/early 90's. Matt Johnson is certainly a genius, and Johnny Marr isn't too shabby a guitarist either!
gotcha beat we started into this trip in 12th grade if I can remember THAT FAR back. I was a teenager and this was hitting the FSU Alt radio station and 2 particular dance clubs. Club 506/Late Nite Library and CPA downtown. THE BEST OF TIMES the 80s
One of the staple in my playlist....gonna play this over and over all day....when THIS pandemic ends.....miss the best time being young during the 80s...the Generation of great artist and music....The The.....
Fantastic album, love this version but the album version with the accordion is unbelievably good, the lyrics are so deep and searching, it will be my funeral song for sure :-)
I'm fan of The The from more than twenty years... Matt's music helped me so many times... I didn't have opportunity to attend in The The concert, but maybe in the future.
Were they more popular in the UK , Australia ? I’ve loved them from the beginning - or close to it . One of the first albums I bought . Wish I still had it . Soul Mining , was it called ? Never worked out how come they’re nearly never spoken of when 80s music is hashed over or played .
Best concert 1992 St. Petersburg FL., They opened for Depeche Mode. They sang and crawled around the Floor in front of us all. These fellas fucking ROCKED MY LIFE.
From St. Pete my friend, wish I could have been there for this one. Wow, amazing lyrics, so powerful, that harmonica, I think accordion with it would have been cool ...
Perfect lyrics to a 20 something yo guy in the completely headless decade of the 1990ies. Most of the time I was just waiting for the perfect day to change my life. It happend fotunately a decade later when I finally met the woman I love until today. But this outstanding song brings back so many bittersweet memories.
I listen to this song regularly because it's effing wonderful, but this is the first time that I have seen this live version. It is superb. Please come to South Africa, Matt.
WOOOO! So glad a new generation will discover this wonderful band!! Congrats on the GTA Online placement!. Saw you at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver in .. the 80s . you guys were AMAZING. one of the best sounding concerts i've ever been to.
Soul Mining is a massive album for me. Another amazing Some Bizzare band. I’d put this on in the dark, headphones on and play it incessantly. 1983 aged 14.
They were so left field . Lyrically complicated musically seemingly simplistic buy fat from it. The collaborators with Matt Johnson ... Johnny Marr, Jules Holland , Nenah Cherry and his team. They are hugely underrated and it stands the test of time
Matt Johnson is one of the greatest talents that England EVER produced. I bought Infected as soon as it came out and converted many to the greatness of that album every track is pure genius
Heard this (thanks to my sister) in 1983, I was 20. June 2024. if you don't have tears in your eyes, you don't get it and if you don't get it you may be one of the lucky? No so sure. One of the greatest songs ever penned. Bitter sweet. Thank you Matt.
Probably my overall all time favorite artist-can't get enough of them...I remember first hearing "Giant" at a party and was intrigued-found that jacket and I was off...I bought the 10 minute vinyl version of Uncertain Smile sometime after that and then Soul Mining and I was hooked. Still have the vinyl...Cheers!
As a DJ, I would play this song (vinyl) in this run-down dance Bar in NB, Canada. Played it almost every day for several months... because I thought some of the patrons needed therapy,
Wow. I only recently discovered this song and I've been listening to the studio recording over and over again. This is an absolutely incredible alternate take. I'm going to listen to it again immediately. Leave me alone.

Good luck to you
Hope you already had your day! If you didn’t make it tomorrow 🤙 whatever you’re good at, go find someone who needs those skills and offer
Hope! I am with you, man.
Please ask GOD for help...& I'll keep U in my prayers, as I've been there myself many times...
❤❤❤
THE THE, maybe the most underrated band to come out of England. Matt Johnson is a genius. Infect me with your love!
Just probably the most under rated band.
Maybe it is because of his political T-Shirt ;@)
it's so funny and annoying at the same time when people overusing expressions like "... is a genius" - he is a good musician, had his good times, he had his bad times, just an human, that's it :-)))
Prophet . Soothsayer

This song never fails to bring tears it is the last song I heard before I got the word my daughter passed. Miss you sweet Victoria!
RIP. Hope you're doing good, man.
Bless you. I haven't got your back story but this track has always brought a tear to my eye.
I'm really sorry about your daughter.
Need more than a song, from a strangely named, one man bad for that.
Be blessed, & I'm sure you will see you daughter again one day!
This bro on the harmonica is killing it!
alexander dragutinovic haha so damn true he goin in 🤟🏼 !!!!!!!!
Mr Fitting crushing it!!!
yES!!!! WOW!!!
the harBROnica
Creo la mejor de ellos en Harmonica es SLOW EMOTION REPLAY
This low, smooth, velvet voice never fails to bring me joy.
Bought this album way back in the 80' in my 20's and loved it for its wit and great vocals and musicality. It's never failed to lift my spirits!
Confermo

The harmonica really adds to the quiet hopefulness and bittersweetness of this song.
Great memories of the 80's.
One of the staple in my playlist....gonna play this over and over all day....when THIS pandemic ends.....miss the best time being young during the 80s...the Generation of great artist and music....The The.....
Why wait till the pandemic ends to play this over and over all day?
we're still waiting, aren't we?
bring me back in a good and young time. Amazing
I think the entire world needs to go back to the 80's or another time. Massive paradigm shift.
me encantaría saber la traducción en español🥰
Fantastic album, love this version but the album version with the accordion is unbelievably good, the lyrics are so deep and searching, it will be my funeral song for sure :-)
Excellent idea!
I CAN LISTEN TO THIS SONG OVER AND OVER AGAIN SO SO GOOD
I love this song, I love his voice!
Infected is still one of my favorite albums. What a voice. Stunning lyrics.
Yes! Infected, it's just in us.💞
I've heard all the versions with accordions, violins, guitars and keyboards, but this one with the harmonica is definitely my favourite🙂
Agree. And it’s so touching when he raises his right arm as he plays his solo.
Same here
If you like the harmonica, listen to the Aussie band, The Waifs, particularly 'Crazy Train'. Vikki Thorn is incredible.
@@Bushkaboo Thanks mate. I'll check it out.
Helped me greatly through a VERRRRRRY hard time -Thank you.
I was a gay cloested gay teenager 😔 when listening to this. Gave me strength
this is the best version,no doubt !!! that harmonica is killin it 🔥🔥
That's overdubbed, the original was unbelievable, but I can't find it anymore.
I'm fan of The The from more than twenty years... Matt's music helped me so many times...
I didn't have opportunity to attend in The The concert, but maybe in the future.
Did you ever go
this version is called "That Was The Day" and it was made a decade later.
yes, it was released on the Dis-Infected EP.
Were they more popular in the UK , Australia ? I’ve loved them from the beginning - or close to it . One of the first albums I bought . Wish I still had it . Soul Mining , was it called ? Never worked out how come they’re nearly never spoken of when 80s music is hashed over or played .

Matt Johnson’s voice always gives me a goosebumps really nice deep voice still sounded like I’m listening to the vinyl 👍👍🙏
"There's a side of you they'll never see is when youre left alone with the memories that hold your life together like glue" wow.
Genius in grace and sound. Smart, witty, dirty, and darkly optimistic.
Matt never got the recognition he deserved. Great singer and songwriter - definitely in my top 10.
My favorite band of all time! Im an 80s dude. This is the Day and Uncertain Smile are my anthem songs now I am in my 50s
Perfect lyrics to a 20 something yo guy in the completely headless decade of the 1990ies. Most of the time I was just waiting for the perfect day to change my life. 👍
Same. Don't ever get divorced.
Nothing is as headless as this goddamn decade.
I actually got his autograph on a T-Shirt and concert program! Thank you Matt and your office staff for helping to make an old lady happy.
I would spin at partying and going crazy having the greatest time, then wake ,turn this song on ,thank you,it's perfect
Beautiful song !!! Lyrics !!! Vocals!! Great baritone voice with great upper register !!! Voice is better than in 80s !!!
I listen to this song regularly because it's effing wonderful, but this is the first time that I have seen this live version. It is superb. Please come to South Africa, Matt.

Awesome harmonica play!
Música de um tempo que não volta
I listen to this song a lot. I've never related to a song as much as this.
3.54 seconds with continuous goosebumps... thats a record!
Empire Records! Such a great film with an awesome soundtrack! Ah good memories of being a tv/movie watching teen before the world went mad!
This is so damn good. I’m just rediscovering The The since those old days mid 80s. So underrated.

O cara da gaita é sacanagem de bom !!!!
Wow. I only recently discovered this song and I've been listening to the studio recording over and over again. This is an absolutely incredible alternate take. I'm going to listen to it again immediately. Leave me alone.
