Interesting seeing how you cope with the cold. Lovely scenery and great drone footage - loved the low level flight over iced lake. And, yes, would love to see you have a dip in the lake Chris.
Hello Chris and Charlene, nice video and insight into winter van life. I wanted to talk to you about the difficult starting of the van, because cold starting at -8 or -9 centigrade for a modern diesel engine shouldn't really be an issue. The main thing for an efficient morning start is to have a healthy and adequate starting battery. It's not enough that it is of the correct capacity, for instance 100AH or model 019, it also needs to meet the minimum Cold Cranking Amps (also known as CCA) required by the manufacturer. I strongly suggest you get the largest CCA battery, for instance if you search for BOSCH batteries, they have three models S3, S4 and S5. All three would have the same capacity but the S5 delivers the highest CCA, which is what really matters. A strong battery will also save the starter motor in the long run. From your video I suspect your start cranking speed is somewhat sluggish, so it's definitely something to look into. If the battery is of the correct type and healthy, then check the cables for tightness and ultimately the starter motor itself. Secondly, the glowplugs. In one of your previous videos, if I recall correctly you showed a flashing glow plug warning light on the dashboard and you commented how that indicated that the temperature was cold outside. Normally a flashing glow plug warning light means that the engine ECU detected one or more malfunctioning glow plugs (you have 4 in total on your engine). I would definitely recommend having them checked at a garage. In case one or more are blown then ensure that the garage which is going to do the work is experienced in this job, because extracting the old ones can sometimes be challenging and if job is rushed it can result in a broken plug stuck in the cylinder head, which could then trigger a much bigger job. About the starting sequence itself, the fact that you cycle the key 3 times before cranking means that you are forcing any remaining functional glow plugs to "glow" harder for longer to make up for the blown ones, but this is going to overstress the remaining good ones and shorten their life. I suggest that you carry out a cold start sequence by first cranking the engine for a couple of seconds, then key-OFF and ON again to carry out a full glow-plug relay warm up, then crank the engine again in one go for up to 15 seconds or until the engine starts. I noticed that you pulse the accelerator pedal while cranking, this is completely unnecessary and probably counterproductive. That was only a useful trick for old carburettor petrol engines. Just hold the pedal depressed halfway and don't revv-up the engine above 2000rpm for the first couple of minutes after starting. Good luck.
Brrrrr C2H!! Get in the bloody lake Chris!!.... You Woosey!! Haha Great VLOG guys, featuring Charlene - The 'Snow Queen' 😂😂 with some interesting facts, tips & ideas to consider. PS that ham & cheese roll looked deeeee skussss tinnngggg!! (It reminded me of tinned spam we used to get at School)! 😮😢😮 Anyway, take care on the slippery surfaces, check ya tyre pressures & brake pad wear! I look forward to the next one, love UK Dad N1S x
Thanks so much Kev, glad you enjoyed the video ❤️ The sandwich was actually good especially the fresh bread... but I think I prefer the normal ham tbh 😀
Yes that sick feeling of a parking fine. I top up the charge in my jump pack every few Months as geting out the habitation battery to jump start is Painful.
It looks really cold in Austria right now - Chris I’m surprised you guys don’t winter in a warmer country like Italy/Spain surely it would help keep your costs down a bit. 😅

Let's do it 🏊♂️😃
Thanks so much Terence, I'm right behind you 🏊♂️😃
Lebensgefahr means so dangerous it might kill you! Rest of the sign says “The ice is partly thin. Walking or skating at your own risk!”
Lucky we didn't go out on the lake then 😊
@ Could have been an unexpected dip! 🥶
The sign by the lake means that the ice has uneven thickness and is very dangerous
Lucky we didn't go out on the lake then 😊

Yes extremely cold, so much colder than last year ... We're on it ! 🇮🇹
@ Nice work, I checked your website out the other day as well. Very professional & impressive.
Keep doing your thing Chris 👍
Hi Chris & Charlene. Did you question your parking fine when you paid it? What did they say about your paid ticket?
It's because that parking lot was also supposedly only for cars
Why did you accept the fine??
Because it wasn't a lot and leaving Austria soon so not worth hanging around to contest a small amount
