I am proud to live in a home in Vancouver Canada which came with a Stainless Steel Whirlpool Gold refrigerator .
However I have some bad news about our Refrigerator.
The Bad News
Symptoms: Leaking water, temperature too high, water on food, spoiled vegetables, temperature is too high / food is too warm.
Why it is Happening
Freezer has a drain system for the auto defrost.
Reason for the symptoms: Auto defrost ice clogs the back of the freezer and the drain hole. Water leaks down into fridge and ice clogs the air vents
But there is Good News: It can be fixed.
Good news: Found a video on UA-cam which explains the solution. Thanks to CTSCAPER for his video on Whirlpool Leaking Refrigerator Repair:

I watched all the videos and all I learned was to let it all thaw out, which I already knew. I have no blockage, it just freezes up over and over again. Finally you came up with a fix action which I just did. Thank you for the solution to an irritating problem!
Thanks Steve, great to hear that it helped!! Cheers and hope you have a nice day :) -Geoff

Can you use aluminum wire?
you are really genius. ..
+mohammed ridha thank you!!! :D
Great Video. Thanks so much Geoff. I too live in Vancouver, so this fridge MUSt be a developers' issue. Question: how long is the copper wire you put in? Some of the comments here suggest three feet? Really? The entire length of the fridge? Then I've got a lot of un-freezing to do.
yes down the drain hole, the entire length of the fridge worked for me. thanks mjboyter.
Hi Geoff! I’m checking in on this, about to fix my fridge… has this fix held through the test of time? I’m wondering if it is still working years later. 😊
Hi smclain1300, thanks. I have moved out of this apartment but I believe the fridge is still there and the fix is still working! Cheers, Geoff
What gauge copper wire do you recommend? Thank Geoff!
I used 20 Ga copper wire
+geoffmobile, how long should the copper wire be?
I used a long amount, all the way to the bottom of the hole. It will prevent ice from forming and clogging the drain all the way to the bottom. You can try putting at least 2 or 3 feet or more if it fits.
is it ok to use the copper wire for the whirlpool refrigerator which has not a metallic hose but a rubber hose?
not sure!
Hi Geoff! How successful was this copper wire solution? Looks promising....
Hi Robert, yes it has permanently fixed this issue for us. Regards, Geoff
cool! Thanks and let me know how it goes :)
hi! I have a bottom freezer that seems to be leaking. I say seems to, because I am unclear if its the freezer or the fridge that is actually leaking. It collects in the bottom of the freezer then runs out onto my floor. It is a whirlpool bottom freezer. Any advice?!
Hi Anna, sorry I am not familiar with bottom freezers. Is there an accumilation of ice, and if so is a drain hole clogged?
Cooper wirer works (on many models. I have a Sumsong refrigerator, same type of issues. Freezer coil would freeze up. I ran a cooper wire through the drain tube from the freezer coil to the bottom of the refrigerator, rapping the cooper wirer around the heat displacement coils (under the refrigerator)… did this about three years ago, no more issues.
Hi I was wondering if this works the same for French door whirlpool gold about 1year old. It is icing on the bottom inside freezer which is at bottom of fridge from there is leaks out onto the floor. Any advice would be appreciated thanks,
Pamela-anne:)
Hi Pamela-anne, I think it is worth a try for your Whirlpool. It is not a very risky repair provided you unplug your fridge or turn off the circuit breaker. Please let me know if it works! Cheers, Geoff :)
Thanks Geoff for the quick response I guess I know what we will be doing this weekend! You have saved me some major worry take care and keep up the great advice. If you ever are in need of a writer to do a how to e-book you can contact me (Pamela-anne Kinney) at odesk.com I would love to write an e-book on your great how to ideas! Bye for now:)
Thanks very much Pamela-anne, hope your fridge gets fixed soon!! And thanks for the offer, I will keep you in mind! Could you please send me an example of an ebook you have written? Thanks :) geoff.peters@gmail.com
Hi Geoff,
I have a similar Whirlpool Gold fridge which is leaking. The freezer looks almost identical to this one but I'm having a hard time removing the back panel. I've removed all 3 screws but it won't come off. It doesn't seem to come loose at the bottom. Is there a certain way to remove it? Thanks.
Hi there, yes I had the same problem. The issue was that the ice was holding the panel in place. I had to use a hair drier to melt some of it, and then pouring many cups of boiling water down into that area to melt it enough so I could remove the panel. I definitely advise to disconnect your power to the fridge before going ahead. good luck :)

Ok, I will try with the hot water tomorrow. I'm sure that will do the trick. Thanks.

ok cool, please let me know how it goes! -Geoff
geoffmobile
I got the back panel off and the drain was covered with ice, which I removed, but the drain itself is full of ice and boiling hot water doesn't seem to melt it. Should I just leave it unplugged and let it thaw out on its own?
MLVC875 yes just wait 8 hours and it should all melt eventually
gonna try it.............will let you know.
+Kate Caldwell thanks Kate, how did it go? cheers, Geoff
Hi Mike, if you pour water down the drain hole, does it drain out? Maybe it is just clogged further down the hole? When this happened for me , it didn't smell bad. Are you sure it's water that was leaking? Maybe it is a coolant leak from the freezer. Does the fridge and freezer still get cold? Sorry I am not an expert on all aspects of fridges, you may have to call a repair person. :(
You mentioned having to pour boiling water to fully de-ice the drain. How are you able to tell when it's fully de-iced and you don't need to continue pouring water down the drain?
The water should start running out of the bottom of the fridge and drains quickly down the hole rather than pooling.
Thanks Geoff! Just to make sure I'm prepared...when you say drain out of the bottom of the fridge, do you mean onto the floor?
it drains into a tray under your fridge. the water will evaporate before too much collects into the tray.
Thanks Chris, that makes sense!! :D
Yes, PoofyLlama :) That is what happened when I tried it. Thanks!! :D Geoff
Great video,
I thought I had the same problem; I was away for a week and came home to a nasty smell in the kitchen; Long story short, i found the water tray in the bottom of the fridge filled with water that smelled nasty; i emptied the freezer, and took off the panels, similar to your demonstration; I noticed my drain plug is cleared; slight condensation on the top right ; from one of the pipes; any idea why I have a leak? first time I've had a problem; fridge is about 10 years old
thx
a bunch of water leaked out the back/underside of the fridge as i was flushing the system with boiling water. couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from, so i wasn't able to catch it on the way out.
I asked a neighbor to borrow her hair dryer and the copper wire went all the way down after about 30-45mins of drying. Hopefully this works. Time will tell
Good luck, sounds similar to my experience, and my fridge seems to be permanently fixed now
geoffmobile also - thank you for sharing this.
LLroomtempJ you're most welcome :) Thanks!!
I have a Whirlpool Gold...there's always water on the floor. It doesn't smell. what can I do?
The solution I propose in this video may work for you, if it's the same issue (check that the drain hole is clogged with ice?)
Good luck!
How far down the drain did you insert the copper wire? I plan to try this the next time it freezes up as it is doing it quite frequently now.
Whirlpool customer service still claims that there is no problem with their model but there are numerous internet postings. My son had the same problem and a repairman used the same solution in your video and claims that the problem on this model is well known. None of my family will ever buy Whirlpool again. If they had acknowledged the problem we could have had this workaround years ago and save ourselves a ton of misery. They should be ashamed!
Hi William, I inserted the wire all the way down the drain to the bottom. After this fix, the fridge has been running great for years! We have a newer bottom freezer Whirlpool in our new apartment, and it doesn't have this issue.
Do not buy a Whirlpool Gold Refrig. I have one 5 years old and have had nothing but trouble from it. Needed a new defrost timer. Now I have leaking on the floor...not even a year later. HATE IT!
