When I think of a Sleeper guitar, I think of a brand that is both affordable and high quality that can hang with the big expensive brands. I keep waving the flag of Godin Guitar Co. Handmade in Canada and USA, great build quality, great components, great versatile guitars that don't break the bank.
@@vulcandj Own one and they are awesome. Merlot P90 version. I really want one of the MIJ Pro Gold Top versions like Chris Buck plays, but I don't know how it could be worth 3 times the price of the Standard.
Nblades78 well Godin might not break your bank they sure do cave in a wall on mine. The 5th Avenue(yes I drool for one) is $1000 all totaled. Pricey. Not breaking the bank is $350-500 above that you can hear the walls start to buckle.
I would suggest picking up a good nylon acoustic as well. I had one early on in my learning the guitar days. For me, it forced me to try to learn finger picking techniques and it puts you into another frame of thinking as opposed to a J45 acoustic or Strat/les Paul..gets you out of that country/rock mode a bit. With steel strings I wanna rock! With nylon I get Into a softer side of my musical personality..if that makes sense.
After thinking that I should buy a PRS for a long time, I finally did. I was impressed. Quality. I needed another acoustic recently and because the Custom 24 SE impressed me so much I considered another PRS. It won out against two much more expensive guitars, and now that I've had it nearly two months, I'm still happy.
My favorite sleeper guitar is one that was gifted to me. William F Buslap parlor. It is well over 100 years old. Old craftsmanship that has stood the test of time. You can only smile when you see and play it.
Have an Eastwood Rockerbox DLX that had 3 buckers from the factory. Loved the guitar but too dark sounding originally . Put a custom wound Planet Tone P90 in bucker case in the the neck and bridge and an Ibanez P90 I had in the middle. Neck and middle out of Phase, has a unique tone in that mode if both at max on vol. pots. Bleeds off some of the signal somehow. Don't really know how to describe the sound but it is great for blues lead and such, cuts clean through a mix. It is a full hollowbody and resonates with a clean building slow feedback intensity on any A note I play and hold, very dynamic and musical used right. I also own a '14 Gibson ES 335, two D'Angelico DC Premiers (P90 six and 'bucker 12 string) and a vintage 1972 Aria Pro II TA70 with S-D buckers. I play the Rockerbox more than all the rest combined.
Lipstick pickups are a huge sleeper sound. As for guitars: Les Paul Junior Special P90s, especially the ones Gibson was releasing around 2011/12 with the tuneomatic & tailpiece. For me, that’s one of those guitars that got away.
My "sleeper guitar" is my Epiphone Moderne. Sure, it's strange looking, but it's amazingly light and comfortable, and not all that expensive. I like it better than the Gibson ones. I agree on the P-90s, as my absolute favorite guitar is my '57 Les Paul Junior.
Same, satin black. Wanted the blue or green but blackie was almost as loud unplugged as the others were plugged in and the neck felt better. No regrets. Beautiful sounds
You beat me to it! I have a fullerton Comanche, Fullerton S-500, and fullerton fallout. My favorite ouf.them I believe is the Fallout. I have a fullerton ASAT classic but never bonded with it
@DaveMcCall that's what I should have gone with. They had one a few years ago in Orange metallic flake with matching color on the headstock. Big jumbo pickups looking like the ones on the Doheny. SHOULD HAVE, COULD HAVE, WOULD HAVE in retrospect. I went with the Comanche at that time

A good affordable option that _kinda_ ticks two of those boxes, is the Epiphone Casino. They're really good stock. Later, upgrade it with Lollar P90s, and they are great sounding guitars. The Sire / Larry Carlton H7V 335-style guiar with the P90s is nice too. Could stick a Duesenberg Les Trem on in, and would be a super expressive guitars. Something with a trem like that, or even a Bigsby would be my sleeper guitar: I like the Baum Wingman, and the Gretsch Duo Jet. A guitar (Telecaster say) with a lap-steel like bender, from Duesenberg or Certano, is well worth trying. And a Fender Bass VI.
I played my Les Paul for 30 years, I recently bought my first ES-335, now I can't put it down. It does everything so well, every player should own one.
Gretsch jet would have made my list. Loads of guitarist think of Gretsch as being quirky one trick ponies but my Gretsh powerjet can do anything. I think the fender Cabronita would have made my list too for the same reasons.
Absolutely agree that everyone should get a P90 equipped guitar. I love my Yamaha Revstar with P90’s, it has become my #1 and the guitar I find myself picking up the most.
I've played for over 30 years and I've just recently started using p90 guitars, I've got 3 right now a Epipiphone Les Paul jr, Epipiphone Les Paul special bith are the bolt ons and i swapped the pickups and a First Act Lola with a humbucker in the bridge p90 in the neck I'm loving the sound i get from these guitars
RG550, people think it’s just an 80s shred guitar but the HSH pickup configuration gets nice single coil tones making it versatile for many genres. It’s also a FujiGen Japan made instrument for $1K new and has one of the best modern tremolo systems around.
Anything with P-90s? I got that. Two sounds I don't have right now are: anything with Filtertrons--last Gretch was 40 years ago, dammit--and I don't have a resonator. I know it's a different beast, but then, so is a Baritone. Keep it coming, gents. And yeah, nobody watched The Acolyte.
People lament too much over brand of guitar they have. I played an Ibanez RG550 and a Peavey T-60 for years and many gigs and no one in any audience was angry because I wasn't using a Fender or Gibson. Lots of great brands now. I'd say Cort is the sleeper brand since they make the PRS SE stuff and stuff for lots of other brands. Samick too. FGN is a great Japanese brand.
I had I think every T series Peavey made. The T30 with the humbuckers was my fav. I even had the T45 bass at one point. For the T15 I traded an American made predator. Had no idea what it was gonna be worth one day lol. The little southern town I grew up in was flooded with Peavey gear and I have always sworn by them. Got a raptor across the room from me rn.
Lots of fantastic guitars were coming out of japan from the late 70s onward, and many of the more obscure ones like vantage or westone can still be had for cheap
I gotta go with the Ibanez az line up, I have a lm1 and this guitar blows my mind, very versatile, excellent build quality, it's just as good as my suhr and PRS. The az necks are incredible. All around awesome guitar
I love my 335 style guitar. And I typically play tele type guitars. My son had this cheap Lyon that the pots were all kinds of noisy. Replaced the wiring harness with one from a LP, and pulled the humbuckers out and put in P90s. Fun to play
Good stuff. I bought a Yamaha Revstar with P-90s a couple years ago and it’s awesome! I feel I could cover all the bases with a 335 and the Revstar or a Tele.
For me it's a Weissenborn style guitar. I have a Lazy River Weissenborn style guitar made in North Carolina. You could go with a lap steel too. Great open tuning slide, different than playing slide on a Strat or any other electric guitar or on an acoustic or archtop. That's a whole different thing that's still accessible to someone that likes playing slide
I have an Epiphone ES-339 just because I couldn't get past the overall size of the 335. I love the 339, Ive got the pickups/pots upgraded and it sounds incredible. Very resonate guitar.
I play Teles and mostly. But I also have an amazing G&L S500 that gets almost no love too. My sleeper guitars are a PRS SE with soapbars and an early Ibanez Artcore 335. I have done entire gigs with each of them and been happy at the same time. It's amazing what you can settle with when that's all you have.
Gretsches are a relatively small part of the guitar market and most, or maybe all (I'm not sure about the Blacktops) Electomatics and Streamliners don't use actual Filtertrons. They use PAF style HBs that are voiced as close as they can get while being affordable.
@TheMikecheck101 no, I think most actually have a type of filter tron they came out with the paf style pickups pretty recently, think it was the first time
@@josephtremblay6562 or the boat anchor T60! Those things are majestic, if you have the back for one. Those pickups are like nothing else. Not saying they’re the be all end all but they give off a vibe that no other pickup I’ve ever played.
Reverend, innovative ideas (every model gets locking tuners, useful bass contour knob on most models), great pickups and some cool designs reminiscent of the usual, but comfortable and made out of Korina.
I mostly play bass with mine. As a guitarist, it helps me play bass in my comfort zone. Although needs a light touch to keep pitch and was a bugger to set up properly. Mine arrived unplayable out the box.
I never would have thought an ES-335 was a "sleeper". In my case, it took me over the years buying a first one that wasn't great, and owning four "copies" (Yamaha, Epiphone, D'Angelico...) before getting my current one, but finally getting a good one, it quickly became my main instrument. But I've always thought of the first electric to get after you own the "good" Strat, Tele, and LP was a 335... and I sold my R8 Les Paul since getting the 335.
Great ideas, but perhaps mentioning instead of just the high end versions rather mention middle of the road and budget models too? Saying a particular company’s baritone without a good alternate option is a struggle when you’ve want to fill the gaps in the arsenal that aren’t everyday players. Now for alternative guitars, the Parallel Universe Squiers cover a lot of ground as does Reverend guitars. I love my Heritage H535, but playing live and squeezed up against my amp, I just can’t play it out.
Another great video with all the elements you look for in a Casino video. Great guitar discussion, followed by playful banter about the happenings of the day.
Re-Did my comments. 1980s Fenders Made In Japan are a great deal! They made a bunch of strange super strats back then. For WHATEVER reason they sell pretty cheap. $700-$1400 range.. GREAT deal. Ibanez has an awesome pre lawsuit less paul ripoff that's pretty sweet1 (bolt on neck).. Yes it's totally it's own beast. but it looks and sounds cool. Way cheap... $600-1200. I enjoy your channel and just subscribed. I have a Guild Blues 90 (American Made - 1999). A wonderful guitar with Duncan P90's. The body is chambered so I feels like it is a cool blend between a Les Paul and an ES-335. No pedals required for just a beautiful tone.
Never had a Jag but I did have a Jazzmaster. Totally agree on P90's I have a 1952 all Gold Les Paul that I can literally do ANYTHING with it! And also, I totally agree with you on the 335. One of the best guitars I have ever owned and its just a USA model not a Custom Shop or anything. Fantastic guitar! Making me want to check out a baritone now! My wife thanks you in advance!
My wallet can't stretch to a PRS core model, but I've got an SE Hollowbody II Piezo and it's a really useful guitar. It's certainly versatile and covers a lot of bases, but it also does its own thing extremely well.
Y'all need to get weirder. EBMM/Sterling is the perfect brand to get something weird and unique. I have a St Vincent with triple mini humbuckers and a Mariposa, but they have the Kaizen, Albert Lee, and Armada that are shaped like nothing else. D'Angelico has some fun ones with the Bedford, Atlantic, and Brighton. LTD's PS-1000 is an offset single cut with Phat Cats is super cool. Also no Danelectro??
I would second on the Sterling. I have a Cutlass, maybe not weird but comfortable guitar which I picked up a 50 used for about 340. Love the chunky neck! Great value/quality. My other guitars are a Rickenbacker and Taylor.
Not a “sleeper” list. Maybe a couple odd ball guitars and a couple of very common guitars. I wanted to hear about some guitars that are awesome but get overlooked because of the normal strats, les pauls, etc. I was expecting something along the line of: Rickenbacker Dakota Gibson L6s Any of the Godin guitars The new Yamaha pacificas Old Aria Pro II (various models) 80s Peavey T series guitars G&L Asat or Commanche
I owned a Les Paul with P-90s for a while, but the neck pickup was so muddy and indistinct it was difficult to deal with. Also, if you wanted them to sound clean you had to play with the volume knob at like 2.
My PRS SE One is a gem I'll never sell. It's basically PRS's version of the LP Jr. They only did a few years then a limited run. Don't know why it wasn't more popular. If you come across one, get it. The best part is zero tuning issues. Unlike the LP.
PRS, I have a core and a old 96 McCarty and had a 90's Custom 24 but thats enough for me. My custom shop 335 is good for me on the semi hollows. Ive gotten into Luxxtones lately. Next for me is a custom shop tele. Im looking everyday on your website. When I see the one Ill jump on it. I think a p90's is a must for any collection, i have several😂
Agree with the Jaguar, P90s, and 335. Know someone that is one track minded on Gretsch, so, I brought my Heritage 535 w/Bigsby over-there was agreement around the room it was better than any Gretsch.
I love the PRS Special I had a tone wood beautiful one but it gives problems to my left arm and wrist. I had to sell it , the only PRS neck I can play with is the Silver Sky. 😢
True sleeper Steve lukather hh. But I just bought a PRS special semi hollow on a crazy deal and it is probably the most versatile guitar I ever had and it just didn’t cover the tones they are the tones of those particular models and it has some of its own unique little things as well
I love the PRS hollowbodies. I really wish they would make an s2 version. Theres a huge gap between their hollowbody se ($1500) and the american ($4800)
I was tempted by a PRS SE Santana Special DC with P-90s years ago but didn't buy it. Now they're quite rare. No Jaguar, but I have a Squier VM Jazzmaster. No ES-335, but I have two ES-235s, one ebony, one cherry. Baritone? Not sure I want one. I have lots of P-90s, though. SG Special, LP Melody Maker, Junior & Junior Tribute DC AND a pawnshop Bullet "Strat" with a Gibson P-90 (that's the real sleeper of the bunch.)

The Epiphone Wildcat (there are several versions) are great affordable guiltars with P-90s.
It seems like I can dial up magic on a P90 Les Paul in many circumstances. I love P90's. Great video!
I've a D'Angelico Bedford SH which is awesome, and I am intrigued by the St. Vincent which vaguely remind me of Backlund's art deco designs.
good list! but the RevStar maybe would be a great sleeper from what I hear of them,,although I am a Fender fanboy
I've got a Revstar and agree. Brilliant versatile guitar.
@@tgunmusicchannel1973 I believe ya....I have never played one but if Chris Buck likes em...they must have something!
Quite surprised to see Fender Jaguar and Gibson ES-335 listed as sleepers. They are both incredibly well known guitars.
Yeah one of the most popular models from one of the most popular brands (es-335).
I love my Noventa Tele. The p90 is so responsive and the roasted maple neck is butter
Not a “sleeper” list. Maybe a couple odd ball guitars and a couple of very common guitars. I wanted to hear about some guitars that are awesome but get overlooked because of the normal strats, les pauls, etc. I was expecting something along the line of:
Rickenbacker Dakota
Gibson L6s
Any of the Godin guitars
The new Yamaha pacificas
Old Aria Pro II (various models)
80s Peavey T series guitars
G&L Asat or Commanche
The Guild Starfire lll or V would have been a good sleeper. Great tones and quality. Best bang for the buck.
I’ve got a bass 6 that I setup as a baritone. That thing rocks my socks off
I owned a Les Paul with P-90s for a while, but the neck pickup was so muddy and indistinct it was difficult to deal with. Also, if you wanted them to sound clean you had to play with the volume knob at like 2.
the first guitar is a goal
My PRS SE One is a gem I'll never sell. It's basically PRS's version of the LP Jr. They only did a few years then a limited run. Don't know why it wasn't more popular. If you come across one, get it. The best part is zero tuning issues. Unlike the LP.
I've being craving a Mustang lately, but want one with the old bridge, not the strat one on the newer cheaper versions.
Mine is my Les Paul Firebrand.
Plain, unadorned, contoured 3-piece body with no gloss.
And a pair of T-Tops that scream.
Sounds like my Les Paul faded (albeit with 490/498T instead of t-tops)
PRS, I have a core and a old 96 McCarty and had a 90's Custom 24 but thats enough for me. My custom shop 335 is good for me on the semi hollows. Ive gotten into Luxxtones lately. Next for me is a custom shop tele. Im looking everyday on your website. When I see the one Ill jump on it. I think a p90's is a must for any collection, i have several😂
You missed a Rickenbacker! 6 or 12 string. A must have for any guitar arsenal.
A must-have for any bass arsenal too
Les Paul deluxe could be added to that mix. Mini humbuckers can sound really cool
Agree with the Jaguar, P90s, and 335. Know someone that is one track minded on Gretsch, so, I brought my Heritage 535 w/Bigsby over-there was agreement around the room it was better than any Gretsch.
Parker ! Sold mine but boy I miss it . Very versatile guitar!
Maybe one day I would be able to get one of these dream guitars .
A real sleeper from the 90's . Hohner L90 Goldtop. If you can find one have a try.
Your ‘sleeper’ guitars are Gibson, Fender, and PRS. Never heard of those brands I’ll make sure to check them out thanks guys.
😂
Thanks a lot guys. Now I need to buy seven more guitars?
An alternative five if I may
Filtertron equipped hollow body
Reverse Firebird V
Dynasonic equipped duo jet
Jazzmaster
Flying V
My Sleeper is a Squier Protone strat
The neck on that Castadosa looks really nice.
Guild Starfire III or IV. Depending on which body style you prefer.
Semi hollow guitars are my favorites
Les Paul Deluxe and/or the Firebird should be on an expanded list. Both do different sounds not found on other Gibsons.
I love the PRS Special I had a tone wood beautiful one but it gives problems to my left arm and wrist. I had to sell it , the only PRS neck I can play with is the Silver Sky. 😢
The Player Mustang 90 is nice. Hard tail with P90’s.
Red Jags look fantastic. On;y a few guitars I'd own that are red. That is one of them.
I'm not sure I'd consider an expensive PRS, or any super expensive guitar, a sleeper, but I like your vid.
Gold top, Yamaha Revstar, With the P90's. One Badass Geetar.
My PRS Vela is a sleeper! The first ones. And....maybe my Billy Corgan Reverend.
my list :
1.fender stratocaster
2.fender strat
3.squier stratocaster
I was tempted by a PRS SE Santana Special DC with P-90s years ago but didn't buy it. Now they're quite rare.
No Jaguar, but I have a Squier VM Jazzmaster.
No ES-335, but I have two ES-235s, one ebony, one cherry.
Baritone? Not sure I want one.
I have lots of P-90s, though. SG Special, LP Melody Maker, Junior & Junior Tribute DC AND a pawnshop Bullet "Strat" with a Gibson P-90 (that's the real sleeper of the bunch.)
I enjoy it when you talk about ACOUSTIC guitar now and then. 🙁
you're definition of "sleeper" seems to be drastically different from what the rest of world means 😂
Filtertrons are cool.
Center block gretschs.. love all of them.. (just be sure to loctite every screw and nut )😂
The 335 is really the versatile Swiss army knife without having any ridiculous features.
Another informative crazy mashup up of topic's
Big p90 fans in my house. I feeling love with my cheap Epiphone Coronet, then my boy bought a Casino
Great episode guys laughing the whole time
