  • A legend on the British Folk Music Scene, John Joyce, along with Cyril Davis, pioneered the 12 string guitar in the UK. Blues was his first love and he appeared with such greats as Howling Wolf,Jesse Fuller, Reverend Gary Davis,Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee. John's playing a 'one off' Harmony Stella 12 string, made for a trade show in the 60's, but not released on sale, shame about that, as it's got a great sound. Sadly,in February 2004, John passed away.

thanks for your sincere comments on my friends playing. During his lifetime John never got anywhere near the accolades he deserved, but now after his death, many people are begining to take notice. Like you, John always said he was living in the wrong generation. But thanks to you tube, i can now promote his talents. Paul.

John was a close friend of my mum, and I was proud to call him a friend too. I found a cassette of his work that I hadn't seen in over 10 years the other day... what a joy it was to listen to again. A legend as both a guitarist and a human being. The world is a better place for having had JJ in it.

Thank you for sharing this video! I had the great privilege to know JJ, back in the early '90s. My first job out of school, at 15, was working at Hands Guitars in Kingston. John used to pop in once a week to do repairs (he set up all my guitars at the time). He was a rare beast in musician circles, always happy to impart wisdom but never patronising (even to an arrogant little snot-nose like me). A lovely bloke, sorely missed.

Hey, Dan! I too remember John with a great deal of admiration and affection, but bugger, I wish he'd played some guitar for us at the shop! A true master! Also fixed up a few of my guitars. I've still got that SG jnr. Been enjoying your posts on FB. Hope you're well, man.

So lovely to find this when looking for something else. Brought back memories of seeing Johney with Big Mac and Beverly as the Levee Breakers at the Ailsa Tavern in Twickenham almost every week - so many amazing blues players around that area then I thought the whole world was awash with the finest music. Somewhere I have a print by John of Leadbelly's guitar. A beautiful graphic which got put away when I moved house. Must find tomorrow and restore to pride of place. Many thanks for posting.

Hi timmey, unfortunately John's not on this earth any more. He died in Feb 2004. Without his and others pioneering efforts in a distant generation, i doubt there would have been stages for people like Tommy E to play. Both have certainly made contributions to the acoustic genre in their respective careers.

bet that gutiar plays beautifully, i have an old guild 12 from the 70's, beats the hell out of my fender 12 string from the 80's. If i play acoustic i always use my 12 strings, i don't know why, its that huge beautiful sound that i just love. There not difficult to play, it's jsut that you have to have strong and flexible hands to handle 6 more strings.

It's a Harmony / Stella 12 string. As far as we know, it's original. As John is no longer alive to check with, we have to rely on his statement that this was a one off made for a guitar exhibition in the 1970's.

Paul features this extract on his excellent double DVD "12 string guitar and Beyond - Collecting vintage guitars". I just wish some of Paul's own 12 string recordings were still available. His website only lists 'Songs from the Compleat Angler' in which (I'm sad to say), it often sounds as if he was singing an octave higher than his voice could comfortably manage.

Another thing to note, especially if trying to play John's style is that he plays a 12 string with 12 frets to the body, not 14 as most new guitars have. He also tunes his guitar to a lower pitch. Either One and a half or two tones down from concert. He then tunes the two low E strings down a further tone. Have a look at my Paul Brett list on UA-cam where I have put Ja clip showing Johns tuning.

@bmills225 tune the top set of strings like a regular guitar. the on the second set, tune the top 4 each an octave lower that the string above it. the bottom 2 pairs are the same tuning. bb and ee same octaves. i hope this makes sense.

I play a twelve string and it IS a little more difficult but you get used to it very quick.
And as far as the pressure, it isn't cut in half that doesn't made any sense. Its just like a 6 string but each string has a buddy that harmonizes with it, there is no reason why the pressure would be different. The only thing that is different is that you have to press down 2 strings with each finger as opposed to one.

Lazy guitarists don't play 12-strings - not unless they have someone stringing and tuning it for them. I haven't put strings on mine in just about forever, it's just so tedious - then 2x the stretching and tuning. Oh, but what a glorious thing it is to stroke it with new strings. Hey, I may restring that guitar yet!
