I have to say this - with all the varied posters vying to perform and garner subscribers on UA-cam, even quite expert players, there are very few that deliver the depth and coherence of instruction that you do combined with a genuine artistry of spirit and emotion. You knock it out of the park every time, Kent! Pure poetry.
I have the feeling that I almost hardly deserve such lessons this easy! I am old-school, There are not that many old-school teachers on the net. You are playing Bill Evans concepts but in way that is you! I am shocked positively and you make me cry Thank you! The hardest thing is to keep the balance You play so good in balance!!!
IT"S ONLY AFTER YEARS OF CONFUSION AND STRUGGLE TO FIND MY PATH IN LIFE. Once I knew what to do, I began practicing passionately and went to hear all the best jazz groups I could hear in NYC, Boston, and Newport. . The work put into becoming it....... is what it is.
Kent always an inspiration and pleasure to listen to and learn from. you manage to fit in all the teaching you do in such depth while performing the song so beautifully. If you get around to it and like the tune, I’d also love an arrangement/lesson of Jerome kern & Ira Gershwin’s “long ago and far away”.
How ironic that the crickets joined in for this dreamy and dramatic fantasia of a piece that centers around relating what happens every night while the author is asleep. Fascinating.
You pack so much into these videos! I just eat this stuff up. Every time I see that KH has posted a new vid, I can rest assured that my knowledge of jazz theory, keyboard technique, and stylistic subtleties is about to increase. A big thanks from someone who doesn't share your skill level (yet), but loves the music on a comparable level. I'm impressed with your fast recovery from the surgery, but I can imagine that for you it felt like forever!
I'm not all there yet and still waiting for better results. I have 4 gigs in a row this week coming and haven't played out in 3 weeks. I appreciate your comment and support!
Your recent posting of your wonderful rendition led me here to give it a go. Good old ADEM in titillating form too. Love the "dork" memory. Insults are the weapons of jealousy.
"Insults are the weapons of jealousy!"Wise epitaphs are appreciated on this channel! We must always remember our dork memories , because we've all had them...whether we want to admit it or not.
I like the Altered Dominant Ego man. He tells great stories of the past days. That's what probably Bunk Johnson used to do when being interviewed by unsuspecting Jazz writers who took his fantastic stories for gospel truth. That's actually a nice supplement to real history and a part of the Jazz folklore. Have to appreciate that!
I dig what you're saying. And certain folks would rather hear these true stories. I have quite a few ...I had a lot of great opportunities when I was "coming up"...those days are all gone now...because it's a different world...but I have the memories and will never forget them. Have you read Bill Crow's book? Great true jazz musician stories.
Great arrangement Kent! Love this video. Please consider doing 'Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most', my all time favorite tune. Thanks for all you do.
8:17 - 8:53 love this bit, reminds me of Barry Harris. It sounds beautiful and it works so well because harmonically the diminished chords in any inversion are functioning as a rootless V7♭9 resolving to inversions of the Imaj6. So in the example I’m hearing D7♭9(V7) -> G6(I) -> E-7(vi).
KH, I would love to hear some of your favorite chord progressions, would be cool to see a video of you explaining some of them and some possibly some modes you use to improvise over them. Thanks!
Very pretty tune. The melody is very pretty, but it's interesting because I heard quite a few dissonant chords/tritones in there, but they all smooth out and work very well together!
This was a new song to you? Yes, it's pretty and unusual, but really part of the hip jazz repertoire, perhaps because of altered chords on the melody and chromatic II-V's. Thanks for commenting.!
Yep! I didn't grow up with much jazz music, truthfully. We were always listening to classical or gospel; as I've taken up piano I've started listening to more and more jazz music/videos to find my way around the keys.
Mr. Hewitt, thank you for the lectures very much. Your playing is wonderful. I wanted to ask, what is the song in the introduction of this video? can I find this exact version of it somewhere? Thanks!
That's Cole Porter's song "Everything I Love" from my trio recording called "Time On My Hands". You can order the album from CD Baby . It's a very nice song. Thanks!
I did this so long ago I don't really remember. However I'll keep that in mind...and if you're interested in my Improvisation videos, here's the playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLFuMibnl_h5bA7Um3IZ38R1kelnoRTPYc.html
Practice my Donna Lee videos starting very slowly and continue to speed them up over time until you develop strength in your fingers and dexterity. Sometimes a simple thing is all that's needed, if you apply yourself.
Hi Kent, I have a question...If we take the beautiful arrangement you did on Darn That Dream for example, what is the process as a pianist? Did you transcribe the arrangement as you played it naturally without preparation in order to explain it to us OR did you first sit and build a plan on how to play the tune and then played it? I mean do the ideas come while you play or do you prepare them? Thanks
Good question. I do it both ways, and my Misty video is a perfect example because the first version played I prepared meticulously working out every detail. The 2nd version played I just "winged it" , like reading from a lead sheet or playing from memory... It is perhaps more fluid sounding. The first version perhaps is more clever and detailed. You can also check out the score on my website. Here's the video: ua-cam.com/video/eMepGOZk1xg/v-deo.html
Great stuff K.H....any ideas on an exercise for working up facility with Drop 2's...e.g. Exercise 1. Run the cycle with the dominant chords in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd inversions of the drop 2 voicing, then, move onto, the minors, flat 5's and majors, or, Exercise 2) Run cycle of dominants with only one inversion, then, with the same inversion, run the cycle with the minors, then, flat 5's, etc, and, then after that's mastered, move onto a 2nd and/or a 3rd inversion??? or Exercise 3) Take 4 or 8 bars of a song, decide on a Drop 2 voicing movement, then take it through the keys...which would be more time effective and practical? Also, is the quality of the Tritones, always Dominant, or can they sometimes have a Minor quality? (I know they can have many color variations like flat 5's, 9's, 13's, etc.) Great to see the pinky free at last...looks great...What's the name of your Doctor, just in case one day I need help...Thanks again...
I have a video on drop 2 exercises through the cycle of 5ths. ...ua-cam.com/video/aP5q_kghIx0/v-deo.html think all of your ideas are good but a big effort of time involved for something that is used basically sparingly. I'd pick Exercise 3 as the more practical use of your time. I have 8 videos using drop 2's in tunes. You might study those. Here....ua-cam.com/play/PLFuMibnl_h5ZMcXYpItRkLzTgzqO44orpRegarding.html tritones...the subs are usually altered dominant chords but differ the way they are used. They can be subbing for dominants (V), minor chords (ii), and diminished chords. The chord they are approaching is the issue. Does any of this help?
Many thanks for this, i've been looking for ideas for this particular song. I'm definitely gonna try parts of this arrangement. I'll most likely start with a dumbed down version and gradually add more and more of these more advanced idea's. How do you come up with these things, like when to use a sharp 13, flat 11 and what not? Cause on their own these chords sometimes sound plain awkward. Only when you add a follow-up chord that closes the tension and suddenly it sounds wonderful.
Interesting queston...because what comes automatic to me is a whole new thing to others. I learned how to use them over years of playing...but there is a natural amount of insight and practical application when seeing the leading tones to tension-resolution in upper structure harmonies. You have to see the b9 resolving down or up a half step and all the dissonant harmonies resolving to consonant. Please see my new video : ua-cam.com/video/RM7wLkAgV5M/v-deo.html
Yes, i already spotted that video (i'm stalking your channel like a hawk :). I guess you're right that it takes time and trial and error to be able to determine where to add tension in between chords. And then _what kind_ of tension. I'm now practicing 'I'm getting sentimental over you' triggered by a cd from T. Monk where he turned this one song inside out. Anyway, certain points in the melody just beg for e.g. dim7 chord runs to get from one point to another. But that's just one tension chord, there's many others. Anyway, by trial and error (and a lot of spare time) i may be getting somewhere. Eventually :) Thanks for yet another helpful video.
Thanks! Did you see the one on Blue In Green?...very much the Bill Evans approach....ua-cam.com/video/YgXm4kAtBT8O/v-deo.htmlh! yes,....I see that you left a comment thanks again!
boody boo doody boo dah.....Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh (Mumbles). Thanks for calling Clark Terry back into mind...put a smile on my face. Beautiful arrangement. Thanks, Kent for the lesson. Good to see you using that finger. All of Kent's fans: if you aren't familiar with Clark Terry doing "Mumbles" - google it. He will have you laughing out loud.
I was going to have a follow up to the Clark Terry bit, explaining that later in the show he did his Mumbles routine with a quirky ending. I hope to get to it. Thanks!
That's a Bdim7 not a Bm7b5. That should be D- Ab and Gbb (F)...it's just a mistake or typo. Fix it on your score. I don't have the original Sibelius score and I don't know how to edit a PDF. Thanks!

Eagerly looking forward to Part II !

You're a great teacher. The guy who called you a dork is a jerk-dork! I dig your glasses, hat, and the way you talk hip, advanced theory.

great job. that is one of my favorite tunes.

He did not record it but check out the list of people who did:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darn_That_Dream
Thanks Kent for the Link and info.

It's possible I moved on to doing a new video...but thanks for watching!
Dear Kent I found also 2nd page second bar your Bm7b5 chord you wrote a Gb i guess you mean Gbb and you mean not Abb i suppose?
That's a Bdim7 not a Bm7b5. That should be D- Ab and Gbb (F)...it's just a mistake or typo. Fix it on your score. I don't have the original Sibelius score and I don't know how to edit a PDF. Thanks!

Hey "KH" could you play Herbie Hancocks rendition of "A song for you"
I haven't heard that...I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the comment!
I heard your Nickelodeon piano song today on satellite radio. Very nice!
Thanks! I was not aware of that. What is Nickelodean and do you remember the name of the song and whether it was from a CD or from a YouYube performance?
The Nickelodean song you played in one of your instructional videos. Can't recall which one specifically? Locrian Mode?
You may be thinking of the intro song which is Music , Music, Music. "Put another nickel in , in the nickelodeon". Teresa Brewer..1949. This is the Ahmad Jamal version 1956.
Oops. That's probably it.
First 8 bars
2:51 2:58 3:00 3:03 3:05 3:08 3:10 3:12 3:14 3:16 3:18 3:20
Second 8bars
3:22 3:24 3:26 3:28 3:30 3:32 3:34 3:36 3:38 3:40 3:42 3:44 3:46
Third 8 bars
3:48 3:50 3:52 3:54 3:56
You got it!
Is the part 2 out yet?
I did this video so long ago, I don't remember what part 2 was suppose to be. My apologies...but I'm glad you liked part 1 enough to ask!
