I wouldn't change anything about the concept, it's spot on. There's so many teachers live and in YT who just talk about licks and stuff that gets you nowhere. You are the real deal. And please don't ever start to over-edit your videos. An acoustic piano, camera and someone who knows what he's talking about is all that's needed (well, a bit of cutting never hurts). Maybe do a jazz version of some recent and popular tune to "blow up" the channel? I think especially new movie tunes are great to get a lot of search hits. I know it's a bit cheap but hey, that's how it goes.

I know this comment is old as fuck but here is my suggestion for a modern song you could do a versión of: strangers by nature by Adele, a reeeeeally great tune and with great possibilities to "jazzify" it. Btw this videos always help me so much when having to arrange a tune for piano. I checked them out a lot when i was preparing for my music college entrance exam, and now that i'm in, i still find them really usefull. Keep them coming!

I played string bass and guitar for 50 years but not as a pro but I have developed my chops mentally. Especially syncopation which is giving me a strong independent left hand. Now I have been studying jazz piano for about a year with Kent's book and watch his videos. Just listening to Kent's talking about his music a jazz phiosophy is quite revealing. I look forward to flying out for a few days of private lessons. Just a little more woodsheading first. LOL One thing I love with his style is that his cord voicing alterations is always so efficient. Watching the way his hands flow is so damn ergonomic. I have noticed this on all his song renditions. Now that I am starting to reharminize and adding my own movement and voicing I always try to be effecient concerning my hands flowing like Kent. This is just a small thing but considering the fact that there are a million ways to Express music Kent seems to keep things that are complicated always quite elegant and understated. This is why his expression is so fruitfull. Pros in any field always make is look so easy.

I can’t really play the piano much at all and 99% of what you do goes over my head like a hurricane but boy it’s still just great fun listening and watching you and those sounds you make especially with that tune all the things you are just blow me away, they are sublime moments that don’t last long enough but keep me watching and listening. So many youtubers have started to fill their videos with nonsense to lengthen a post, in order to satisfy the algorithms. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video over the years. But I love it !!! All your stuff. The chordal playing with drop 2’s and block chord techniques. The beginning and ending of your lines, tension - release!! You say it’s a lot of work. Yes it is. I’ve played off and on for 70 years- more on “ now in later life. So good!! I keep practice journals. I try to stay as organized and follow a routine on all songs I learn and I revisit over the years and keep trying more things. It absolutely never ending amd I will never ever be satisfied. That has to be ok. If I lived near you I would beg you for personal one on one lessons. You are the best!!! Kent you have my attention always have, your younger peers are doing 'live' utube question and answer gigs so I suppose that is a suggestion on getting more viewership. I try to study all aspects of music I like, its your taste in particular jazz tunes that keeps my attention, they call this the 'attention economy' what you do, keep doing what you like to do, I like seeing your motions on the piano, it helps myself. Many of us still are grasping all the jargon as far as theory, and its sinking in with your efforts

One of my favorite jazz pieces. I do jazz accordion so I try to use your instruction to enhance my playing. Keep up the good work. I am only 70 but, learning more each time I listen to you. A visual keyboard would help because it is hard to see what keys you are playing.

What's the name of your tutorial on tri-tone substitution? Love the #9s btw. They use a lot in "urban" gospel. They use tri-tone subs a lot as well. Would love to learn how and when to apply them more effectively.

Thanks...but I don't have a transcription of the solo....but I have numerous transcriptions on my channel as well as my book. You can commission people to transcribe solos on UA-cam, who are a lot better at it than I am.

Are you asking to make that distinction in a video? An alt chord such as C7alt is leaving it up to the musician to alter whatever intervals he chooses. Since there may be a number of different choices, you can decide which notes to alter, based on your personal taste. Bill Evans often uses a dominant #9 chord in place of a minor 7th.
As always, thank you for sharing your skills and ideas with us mortals! I love that quote from JSB; perhaps you should honour him with a version of the WTC C Major Prelude adapted with tritone substitutions and Super Locrian passages haha. As to the format of your videos etc - i find them a great balance of humour and "work" and I love them as they are, but I'm sure we all trust you to do whatever works best for you in terms of being efficient and (i hope!) fun to MAKE as well as to watch :)

I have been practising this a lot this winter, going from stride piano, arpeggios to the diminished scale that I have picked up again lately, after giving it some rest. It's a great project you have going on with uploading these videos. After having looked at the diminished video -are you going to do something similar on augmented chords? The pianist was Clyde Hart, and Remo Palmieri , Slam Stewart, and Cozy Cole played guitar, bass,and drums , respectively. I wonder if Gillespie did not dictate the intro, played by Hart almost identically to how you play in video ( you add a note, I think). Was Bud Powell already using the inro, but not recorded yet 1945? Dunno. All subsequent Birdversions use it...and most pianists. Hampton Hawes and Bill Evans refer to it, without playing intro exactly, on some recordings. As you know!I really like your explanations of block chords, drop 2, using metronome ( I'm gonna get one and set on 2 & 4 !),selected progressions and voicings, and solos in various styles. Everything you do is golden. Even your humor is serious,and you generously share so much clarity. Thank you for doing what you do.It makes me want to try to play, and I bet you have that effect on a lot of people.Your explanation of how Bill Evans and Scott Lafaro worked out "My Foolish Heart" with those beautifulrootless voicings for piano...that alone is worth a trillion dollars.And please excuse my discography thing above, but I think it's accurate. A last thought: Lee Konitz and Lennie Tristano sure have done a lot of nice things with "All the Things You Are." They internalized it, and made it like breathing, so that it took them different natural places every visit. To a degree notable even for Jazz.

Or a block chord lesson using Duke Ellington's "What Am I Here For?", or"Robbins Nest" a la Hank Jones. Liked that you put the minor 2 of the five Dominant (A7 ( which is Tritone Sub for Eb. The statement you made actually helped me to decode sophisticated jazz songs. In fact..this tutorial is doing that. When you said that A7 is the 5. So we are very temporarily playing in D.. ( Dmaj7 (Emin7 ) F#min7 Gmaj7 (A7)..) So this tells us our Emin7(E G B D) is what we play...and go down to the Tritone sub Db7..(Db F Ab Cb).. I notice that the E>Db ,the G note> F..Etc. The tritone Db7 nicely goes down to Cmaj7. Then Cmin7..oh my head hurts. I'm texting this.

I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video over the years. But I love it !!! All your stuff. The chordal playing with drop 2’s and block chord techniques. The beginning and ending of your lines, tension - release!! You say it’s a lot of work. Yes it is. I’ve played off and on for 70 years- more on “ now in later life. So good!! I keep practice journals. I try to stay as organized and follow a routine on all songs I learn and I revisit over the years and keep trying more things. It absolutely never ending amd I will never ever be satisfied. That has to be ok. If I lived near you I would beg you for personal one on one lessons. You are the best!!! Thank you so much 😊

Kent you have my attention always have, your younger peers are doing 'live' utube question and answer gigs so I suppose that is a suggestion on getting more viewership. I try to study all aspects of music I like, its your taste in particular jazz tunes that keeps my attention, they call this the 'attention economy' what you do, keep doing what you like to do, I like seeing your motions on the piano, it helps myself. Many of us still are grasping all the jargon as far as theory, and its sinking in with your efforts

One of my favorite jazz pieces. I do jazz accordion so I try to use your instruction to enhance my playing. Keep up the good work. I am only 70 but, learning more each time I listen to you. A visual keyboard would help because it is hard to see what keys you are playing.

Feels a bit intimidating.. 😅 I am already happy that I can play the basic chords with some 9’s added. Playing and practicing everyday with a good jazz teacher. Maybe later this makes more sense to me. Sometimes with jazz it feels like you better learn the notes you can’t touch than viceversa

What's the name of your tutorial on tri-tone substitution? Love the #9s btw. They use a lot in "urban" gospel. They use tri-tone subs a lot as well. Would love to learn how and when to apply them more effectively.

Thanks...but I don't have a transcription of the solo....but I have numerous transcriptions on my channel as well as my book. You can commission people to transcribe solos on UA-cam, who are a lot better at it than I am.

Wonderful stuff, Kent. I have a suggestion, which is to make a distinction between a #9 chord and an alt chord.
Are you asking to make that distinction in a video? An alt chord such as C7alt is leaving it up to the musician to alter whatever intervals he chooses. Since there may be a number of different choices, you can decide which notes to alter, based on your personal taste. Bill Evans often uses a dominant #9 chord in place of a minor 7th.

I love that quote from JSB; perhaps you should honour him with a version of the WTC C Major Prelude adapted with tritone substitutions and Super Locrian passages haha. As to the format of your videos etc - i find them a great balance of humour and "work" and I love them as they are, but I'm sure we all trust you to do whatever works best for you in terms of being efficient and (i hope!) fun to MAKE as well as to watch :)

I have been practising this a lot this winter, going from stride piano, arpeggios to the diminished scale that I have picked up again lately, after giving it some rest. It's a great project you have going on with uploading these videos. After having looked at the diminished video -are you going to do something similar on augmented chords? I think it's an interesting subject.

Kent Hewitt, all the videos are wonderful, and in all the things YOU are , you are generous, clear, musical and inspiring.I don't know where to begin thanking you.RE the controversy and speculation on the little intro that everybody uses for"All the Things You Are"....It was used on a recording of the standard on Feb 28, 1945 by a Dizzy Gillespie sextet co-led by Dizzy and Charlie Parker. The pianist was Clyde Hart, and Remo Palmieri , Slam Stewart, and Cozy Cole played guitar, bass,and drums , respectively. I wonder if Gillespie did not dictate the intro, played by Hart almost identically to how you play in video ( you add a note, I think). Was Bud Powell already using the inro, but not recorded yet 1945? Dunno. All subsequent Birdversions use it...and most pianists. Hampton Hawes and Bill Evans refer to it, without playing intro exactly, on some recordings. As you know!I really like your explanations of block chords, drop 2, using metronome ( I'm gonna get one and set on 2 & 4 !),selected progressions and voicings, and solos in various styles. Everything you do is golden. Even your humor is serious,and you generously share so much clarity. Thank you for doing what you do.It makes me want to try to play, and I bet you have that effect on a lot of people.Your explanation of how Bill Evans and Scott Lafaro worked out "My Foolish Heart" with those beautifulrootless voicings for piano...that alone is worth a trillion dollars.And please excuse my discography thing above, but I think it's accurate. A last thought: Lee Konitz and Lennie Tristano sure have done a lot of nice things with "All the Things You Are." They internalized it, and made it like breathing, so that it took them different natural places every visit. To a degree notable even for Jazz.

Oh, yes, I have heard the tape of Evans working up "My Foolish Heart," moving it to A. It's like being a fly on the wall at mt Olympus !Possible idea: Some of the Bud Powell things that are not in books, to my knowledge, like "Reets and I,""Strictly Confidential." Or a block chord lesson using Duke Ellington's "What Am I Here For?", or"Robbins Nest" a la Hank Jones. I work on these things, but seem to get just so far toward how should be played.Again, thank you. AND YOUR SENSE OF WHAT TO TEACH SEEMS IMPECCABLE. I was just throwingout some stuff I have been thinking about. Just keep doing what you do !

Liked that you put the minor 2 of the five Dominant (A7 ( which is Tritone Sub for Eb. The statement you made actually helped me to decode sophisticated jazz songs.
In fact..this tutorial is doing that. When you said that A7 is the 5.
So we are very temporarily playing in D.. ( Dmaj7 (Emin7 ) F#min7
Gmaj7 (A7)..) So this tells us our
Emin7(E G B D) is what we play...and go down to the Tritone sub Db7..(Db F Ab Cb).. I notice that the E>Db ,the G note> F..Etc.
The tritone Db7 nicely goes down to Cmaj7. Then Cmin7..oh my head hurts. I'm texting this.
