      Unfortunately we are being told that when they lost power, they lost steering. The ship hits 1 support pillar and nearly the whole bridge goes down ! Are they designed that way it makes know sense to me. Was it something to do with design or was there something wrong with the way the bridge was built the materials used in making the bridge? It just doesn't seem like a bridge would be taken out by a ship hitting just one pillar

    • @OregonDARRYL
      @OregonDARRYL 2 місяці тому +6

      Bridges are fragile. Made with the least amount of material to be safe and cost effective. They are not designed to bear loads from the side or be bent or messes with in any way. There should have been rocks piled around to protect the supports from any ship. This was waiting to happen... and did.

    • @kimberlystikes5082

    • @OregonDARRYL
      @OregonDARRYL 2 місяці тому +2

      @@kimberlystikes5082 There is no evidence that the bridge was constructed poorly or not maintained - AND even IF you're right... that doesn't matter. It was coming down. Not designed to be hit... There should have been ROCKS piled around the supports to prevent this. Not the bridges "fault"...

    • @kimberlystikes5082
      @kimberlystikes5082 2 місяці тому +2

      @OregonDARRYL concert over steel, like the one it hit, would be better than pebbles. And there weren't enough support pillars. Louisville bridges have more support pillars than that one, and they are shorter bridges.
      I'm glad my city (Louisville) was more concerned about safety and stability when constructing our bridges, even the old ones. But they also know that a barge is going to run into at least one of the bridges (we have 4), about once a year.

      I keep asking myself this same question

  • @kimberlystikes5082
    @kimberlystikes5082 2 місяці тому +8

    This bridge was very poorly built. Bridges in Louisville are not as long as this one, and they have more support pillars, all concrete over steel than this bridge had.
    The oldest two have been hit multiple times by large barges and haven't fallen or lowered. The barge itself went down, one of them took two or three months to remove all the containers and pieces of the barge. The concrete around the steel has had to be repaired, but that's about all the damage that was done to the bridge.
    Guess I will stop complaining about the tolls since they didn't cut corners, making them vulnerable to hits like this. Which happens almost once a year. The shipping company AND the city need to face consequences. Shipping company because it was neglectful on the crews part and the city because of how poorly it was maintained. More support pillars should have been added many years ago.
    My heart goes out to the families who suffered a great loss.

      I swear I wish civil engineering and architecture was mandatory in high school. No that’s not what it means. A ship hitting a support beam at speed there is absolutely nothing that could prevent it from collapsing the way it did. If anything the structured collapse is exactly how it was designed to in the event of demolition. Rewatch it and watch how it folds in sections perfectly. But the point is, ship is not meant to hit support beam. Support beam is not a ship bumper. Safety protocols are in place for reason. Bridge moves for reasons. Storms, natural disasters never took down this bridge. But it’s not built correctly cuz ship hit support beam? Kay. Just Kay.

Yes crabs and other creatures are possibly eating on these bodies as you're ready this and a lot of people drown in the harbor, do your research not only that, there's raw sewage in that water, I'm talking turds and piss read up on it, read up on Back River waste treatment plant! That harbor is DOOKIE WATER the clams can't filter it fast enough!
