Trying to throw make a perfect clay pottery sphere / ball vase on the wheel

  • I was asked to try to make a round ball shape on the wheel by one of my viewers ,so here it is.
Not the best effort as the hole went a bit wonky at the end but it is a bit tricky when the clay is collared in and gets thin.
I've no idea what use it will be as a vase pot or whatever but it was just a try at something different on the wheel.

In my experience, little though it may be, it greatly helps to use either a wooden rib or a medium soft plastic rib on the outside while you are stretching the walls into a spherical form. For whatever reason, it keeps the clay more stable, especially if you have the wheel turning a bit slower than what you would for pulling up the walls.

    Very nice!
Those spheres could easily make interesting looking teapots, especially if you manipulated their shape after you first throw the ball.

Very lovely. This is a good pot for raku--something with no function--because the raku glaze doesn't bond tightly and flakes off, making it unsafe for food and unable to contain water. Art pottery. I love this kind of stuff, eggs and globes. They just blow me away.

I'd like to know what kind of clay you use that can tolerate that much water without collapsing. So graceful. You make it look way easier than it is!

Definitely porcelain. I think it might be a mixture of different clay types though because it doesn't look gritty.

Yeah, its tricky getting round shapes like this. Reminds me of a set of pots in Peter Cosantinos' book "Puff Balls". One trick that he used on his pots was, after throwing the round shapes, he would put a paper colar around the top hole, which would allow him to blow into the hole. This would inflate the pot and make for a rounder shape.
    Luck

How does your clay not just collapse back down whenever you make a pull? Whenever I use that much water, each time I make a pull, the piece doesn’t gain any height because the clay sinks back down under its own weight.

Thy purpose is serves is that you can make luminary out of it that creates beautiful patterns in light on the walls and table.

Now, you let it get about the leather hard stage and carve a lace-like pattern into it to make a spherical lantern for a candle.

That’s gonna be hard on wheel, since the wheel is always spinning. I agree with the other reply poster. Hand build square slabs would be easier to do. Also don’t forget thin coils and slip and score, when attaching the squares to each other

I love it. It's my favorite pottery shape. It doesn't have to have a purpose, just being beautiful is enough. Poke some pussy willows through the hole or maybe some forsythia. Wonderful. I made one once, but it was too tall, sort of oblong, and I didn't have the skill to roundify it. So at the equator I pushed out a little ridge from the inside. That brought the height down, which gave it the roundness I was aiming for. It looked like Saturn's ring, and it was the best I ever did.
