I was born in 1963 and fell in love with the Starsky and Hutch Gran Torino when the show came on TV. I have a tribute car that I consider my "dream come true" car. It's the closest thing I could ever get to the real thing but I love it just the same. Shout out to Steve from Born again Torino's. Much respect to Steve Bordi for preserving one of my most treasured memories. The Striped Tomato.
I actually met the owner and his S&H Torino at a convention recently. really nice guy and his car is in amazing shape. his car and the 2 other vehicles they had on display were the best part of the convention.

My mom had the starsky n hutch car back in the day, fresh off the showroom floor. I came home from school one day and there it was in the driveway, cant express how excited I was lol
I have a '73 Monte Carlo that you can drive with one finger. I think that was the way power steering was in the '70's. Also, just want to let you know that I really appreciate all the effort you put into these videos. I know its a labor of love for you and always enjoy watching them. So THANK YOU!!!
Watch the power brakes on the GM's from that era. Just the thought of applying the brakes seemed to apply them; putting a foot on them would almost put you through the windshield. Had this happen many a time when my older brother drove Mom's Chevy wagon after being used to his Mustang.
Born in '76 behind the Iron Curtain (Hungary) so I saw the series in the 1980's and I fell in love with the color, the shape, the sound. So if I ever win the lottery I'm gonna give a call to Mr. Bordi. :)
The reason I think it’s important to showcase engine/squad 51 is culture impact the show emergency! Had on this county. When the show first aired in 1972 there were only 12 paramedic programs in the county. By the end of the show’s run in 1977, almost all major cities in America had some form of emergency medical service and by 1982, almost half of Americans had access to emergency medical service within in ten minutes response times.
The show also dealt with culture issues of the day. At a time when the fire service was largely made up of men, the show dealt with women in the workplace and how women could be seen at equals in the work place.
I owned a 76 Torino in high school and my twenties. I kick myself in the butt daily for ever getting rid of it. Maybe someday I’ll be able to find another. That deep rumble while idling and then the mean growl when you gas it... I love that!
The low fuel light in the Torino was controled by vacuum or more accurately low vacuum so every time you lay into the throttle the vacuum drops in the engine and the light pops on it's a very simple system that worked, it was just a reminder not a limited....
I'm a born Ford man, own 4 Fords now from a 1944 Ford GP to a 1974 Bronco, and imho, the ONLY problem with the Starsky car is that, in the tv show anyway, the car didn't have a posi rearend, the one-legger burn outs just didn't cut it....other than that, the Starsky Torino is a badass ride...
Seeing the Gran Torino in this video brought back memories of my 1976 Ford Elite which was a luxury version of the Torinos from 1974-76. The dash in my car was similar to the Starsky & Hutch car.
Can verify, the Torino is an easy handling car. Doesn't handle that well when going fast, but for cruising, it's silk. Had a replica when I was younger. That may influence my opinion, but I think this is the best video you've done. Great info, loved hearing Steve discuss his collection and glad he restored that old Season 2-4 Gran Torino. It's simply stunning!
I bought a red 1975 Gran Torino from Hertz Rental Cars in 1977. It was not the “correct” red, but it was good enough for me. I had Paris Auto Body in Rockford, Illinois paint the white stripe on it, then bought slotted dish mags and air shocks. The car looked cool but had nowhere near enough horsepower to get it moving. The doors were so long you could barely get in or out of it in a parking lot with cars next to you. All the same I enjoyed it for a couple of years and then had it repainted all black and sold it. Do I wish I had it today? Yep.
Great video! Great car! Great memories! I used to love watching Starsky and Hutch when I was a kid in the 70s. Also one of the reasons I became a cop. :)
What I wouldn't give to have just one! I'm 52 and I still would love to have one of these......Hell at 11 years old I wanted this car. Lucky guy. Beautiful cars. Nice video
😉😂🤣😄😆😅 It is everything he said it is no doubt about it, except a muscle car. Long gone by then, no high compression cyl. heads, no leaded premium gas, lousy rear gear ratio, and big ugly fat federal government mandated bumpers! Oh the humanity😠😡🤬😢😥 And you can make any car sound powerful with an overdubbed soundtrack........
@@thomasschoon8407 That's right that how that car was made then Ford wanted to cash in on the show so they sold ,1000 of them with 460 ,motor to see if the thing move it didn't was a dog look good.

Another great video Chris! I wish I saw this earlier today as I was running around in Herbie earlier and I was stopped by a recent high school grad who wanted a photo of my car. He said that he really wants to build a "Striped Tomato" replica as he watched the show religiously as a kid.
I had a triple blue 74 Gran Torino Sport. 351C, C6 auto, buckets, floor shift, etc. It was 3 years old when I bought it and I drove it until it died. Loved the car even though it wouldn't go over 105 mph and never got over 10 mpg until about a month before it died. I'd love another one.
I took my drivers ed in 1977 in a 1973 Gran Torino (4 door, of course). Suffice to say, that thing was a sad specimen for the brand, being beaten as a former cop car, then dumped off on the school system like that. They put governors on them in those days, so the thing wouldn't do more than 25mph even with you standing on it. We still tried to make them smoke tires or at least squeal them as we ran around the painted course in the high school parking lot. I can still hear the Instructors' voice over the radio: "Car 23, SLOW DOWN!" :-) Yes, I was a big fan of the original series as well and even though I turned out to be a lifelong Mopar guy, there is an admitted soft spot for the striped tomato car in me somewhere to this day. Look, we're all car guys. We love car guy stories, especially ones with happy endings where the special cars wind up in the hands of those who prove to be good stewards for the cars - and that's what we all are, really, stewards trying to keep these cars alive for the future car guys to see hopefully. I love this channel on YT and I love what this young man is doing. Keep up the awesome work!
My brother returned home from California in late 75. My dad helped him get a really good job in construction working for Mclean Contracting Co. He needed a car to get back and forth to work so my dad co signed for him. He bought a 76 Gran Torino in medium chestnut poly. It had the 351 W 2V auto trans. It had the small quarter top with the opera windows and the plain steel wheels with the little Ford Motor Co. caps. We use to sit and listen to the Eagles, Hotel California, and Peter Frampton, Do You Feel Like I Do. He added a Cobra CB and I would listen to him talking to others. He kept that car till 1980 when he started driving tractor trailers. A mechanic at the place he drove for bugged him to sell the car. He had added a set of Cragar SS wheels to it by then. The guy made a deal with him for the Torino. He got a 65 GTO hardtop and a parts car plus a top and bottom box full of tools. To me that was a great deal and I loved that 65 GTO. It had a 67 400 with a four barrel and M21 and 4.10 gears.
The very end, where the owner talks about how nice it road. They did, they had a ride that you couldn't believe from a "mid size". My 72 Gran Torino four door with a 351 was pretty quick too ! With a Pioneer super tuner and Jensen tri-axiales cranking and way too many beer bottles rolling around we put some miles on that baby !
I had a 71 gto convertible, 400 ci 4 spd, black / white top and interior. My best friend had a 71 Torino gt, dark blue. I'll I ever saw was his taillights, but at the next stop, he'd see all the "tail" I had riding with me. What great times!
I had a 73 Grand Torino sport with the FMX trans and the 351 cleveland, I loved the way it drove it was predictable and well behaved for the young driver that I was at the time. Keep up the videos
The car was the star off the show. I heard that this car almost did not make the show. Because the guy in charge was a Chevy Camaro fan and he wanted a Camaro like his car. He found out Ford was the company that's supplies the cars for the show. The Gran Torino was in the parking lot so that's what they had to work with. Thank God! Because it really worked better for the show. Plus the car looked so very cool after they fixed it up. Next to General Lee of the Dukes of Harzard this car is still a head Turner. Great video!
I love that a young guy is loving these older cars. We took them for granted and then again... We didn't. Cool has always been cool and they were appreciated but we still didn't realize how awesome those cars were. However, they didn't start going downhill in the mid seventies, they were well on their way. It was still a very cool era all in all.
If you grew up with this car, watching it on the TV as we did in the UK, it was the coolest car on TV. The General Lee was cool, but Starsky's car was something else... Of course, I am biased... Starsky and Hutch is and always will be my favourite Cop Show! Thank you for the memories! ❤️
In 1975, i was 7 years old and for the last episode, in 1979, 11 years old. All my childhood. Two things in this show that i love: The stripped tomato and the Vest that wore Paul Michael Glaser alias Starsky. 😂
@@Thirdgen83 The Ford Torino had already established itself as a muscle car before the federal government brought on the smog restrictions that all american muscle cars had to deal with. They all had to reduce emissions and increase fuel mileage. But they still had earned the muscle car honor before that happened so I consider them a muscle car. It’s not the fought of the manufacturers.
As a kid, my whole neighborhood was Ford. Mom drove a 72 Gran Torino 351 CJ, but it was brown metallic. My brothers and I would always egg her on to light'm up.
Love the video, Torino’s are under rated cars, mostly hear about Camaro’s, Chevelle’s or Charger’s and Callenger’s, ‘72 is my favorite year for the Gran Torino coz the rounded front end and rear bumper, my dad was a big Torino fan, he owned a few of them, the one I remember was his ‘72 which was stolen then wrecked, being the late 80’s he didn’t want it anymore cos the damage and I was 5 years old and cried coz he sold it to the junkyard, I still remember that, when I was 16 my dreams came true I found in a barn a ‘72 with heavy layer of dust on it, got it for $400, it needed work but was a steal, I took auto body in high school and restored the body, I was blue with blue interior, being a fan of Starsky & Hutch I painted the original blue with pure white stripe, 20 years later it still beautiful. I bought it with 78k original miles on it and now only have 89k. I love my Torino and can not put a price on it.✌️
The first Torinos used didn't have the 'oomph' needed for tire squeal scenes with an anemic small block in them so they had a couple made with the big block 460's in them for more torque.
Imagine if you will, a resto-mod version of 1 of these devastatingly volatile monsters, with a supercharged 5.2L Voodoo V8, & a frame/suspension that actually allowed the car to perform in turns! (spoken in Rod Serling's voice)
A 1970 ad transfixed me back then: "Torino... styled by the wind. We asked the wind..." as desert sand blew off a 2-door. To me it's the elegant big brother to the beefcake '76 of Starsky and Hutch.
I had the barge, Ford Custom 500 and it was the smoothest car to drive. Exact same, one finger steering. 351 Cleveland 2 barrel and when you opened her up she would float!
There were MULTIPLE tv cars used. Many went out to Ford dealers after the studio was done with them. I worked for a Ford dealer that got one of them. Leaked oil like a sieve.
The power steering in an mid 70s Ford is amazing I have a 77 F150 jacked up on 37.5 x 12 BF Goodrich mud terrains same thing... one finger steering! Even parked or at a stop light
When I was in High School in 1975, I had a 72 Gran Torino Sport exactly like the one in the Clint Eastwood movie, 351c 4v, auto. But if I ever win the lottery I'm heading straight to this guy for a S & H tribute Torino.
my first car was a 79 T-bird,but i fixed it up as my "Starsky & Hutch" Car,T-birds had the same parts as a Torino, steering wheel, seats, dash board, bumpers, interior,it was a wide car to,so when i put wide tires and deep dish rims on the back, plus air shocks, man that car was beautiful, got a fire engine red paint job,it was my inspired car,i called it the "HOOPTY BIRD"!
I had one of the one thousand that Ford put out. It had the tag on the cowl and special sticker on the door pillar and the build sheet was under the rear seat. It had a bench seat and sport mirrors with 351 Windsor engine. Also still got the slot mags I had for it but it had the magnum style wheels stock. Bought it about 1981 and sold it just a few years ago for more than I gave for it with 169,000 miles on it.
Took mine driving my own 4 door Gran Torin. Blue metallic, white landau top, all the goodies except power windows. 240c 351C. Not fast by any means but it would destroy its tires lol.
I had a 1974 ford Ranchero with the 351 c.i.d from the front it looked like your Grand Torino. I loved driving that car. I bought it New and never regretted the purchase. Oh and it was the GT model.
It was not really a popular muscle car in the 1970's, but that TV version was hooked up and sounded awesome ! There's a replica in a garage 2 blocks from me. But we have the 1986 Iroc Z28 so there !
Coolest car ever. This guy is awesome. Oh I have a lot of the same collectables ... but I would love to have the real deal. I give the guy his due... he is the most dedicated S&H fan ever to own the original Torino from the show. Wow. The movie was goofy but I loved that the car(s) were painted with viper red instead of the old ford stock red. Also, they made a slight adjustment to the outside curve of the stripe which matched the body lines just a bit better. I'd be giddy driving that car around. Childhood dream. Too cool.
I was born in 1963 and fell in love with the Starsky and Hutch Gran Torino when the show came on TV. I have a tribute car that I consider my "dream come true" car. In 1975, i was 7 years old and for the last episode, in 1979, 11 years old. All my childhood. Two things in this show that i love: The stripped tomato and the Vest that wore Paul Michael Glaser alias Starsky. 😂
What happened to the blue one with the same white stripe, they used in a couple of episodes?
When I drive my PT Cruiser, I pretend that I am in a Ford Torino. My husband doesn’t understand that feeling either ! 😂
I love that red FT so much!
The Gran Torino was so ahead of its time. We owned a Gran Torino Wagon.. the whole line was great.
Like how he keeps calling it a "Muscle Car" LOL .
Hardly a muscle car lol
@@idontlikecops1 LOL ! Guy is an Asshole Deluxe !!
@@seanrickerson1563 A 1976 anything would NOT ever be a musclecar. A 68-72 Torino yeah but never a 76 anything....
@@seanrickerson1563 Musclecars were not made after 1974 for several decades, and were really down on power by '72.
So YOU are the "donkey".
I had a 73 Blue Gran Torino Sport. Very sharp looking. Bucket seats. Automatic console on the Floor. 351 Cleveland, 4 bbl and duel exhaust.
Great Job Steve
your absolutely correct on the people that love TV & Movie cars a great crowd of people world wide.
G'day Kevin here from Australia. I remember the show well. As a kid i always looked forward each week to watching this car race around the streets. 👍
Absolute class show this car struck a passion from my very young days for love of muscle motors nice video 🔥
I love my Torino and can not put a price on it.✌️
Body on frame are the best! Built like truck ( tough). I wish Ford would bring back an updated version of the Crown Vic.
Just about to build a 75 torino vintage stock car. Always loved this body style. My dad had a montego when I was a kid.
Really great video, as always. I'm really looking forward to the video you shot of Herbie!
Love it! And, love the owner.... he respects the actors, the cars and the time the car comes from!
I loved to watch Starsky & Hutch when I was in highschool. R.I.P David Soul. Aah; forgot Gran Torino movie with Clint Eastwood.
The old Starsky and Hutch show is a great show to watch for old muscle cars all over the place.
The first Torinos used didn't have the 'oomph' needed for tire squeal scenes with an anemic small block in them so they had a couple made with the big block 460's in them for more torque.
would be awesome to do a video on the Bullitt car, 1968 Ford Mustang 390 GT 2+2 Fastback.
Imagine if you will, a resto-mod version of 1 of these devastatingly volatile monsters, with a supercharged 5.2L Voodoo V8, & a frame/suspension that actually allowed the car to perform in turns! (spoken in Rod Serling's voice)
Nice to find this the same day we find out David Soul passed away. Beautiful classic car
A 1970 ad transfixed me back then: "Torino... styled by the wind. We asked the wind..." as desert sand blew off a 2-door. To me it's the elegant big brother to the beefcake '76 of Starsky and Hutch.
I've had 2 a 76 door and a 73 2 door sport they were both excellent car's and would fly!! i miss both of them especially the 73 sport
Even parked or at a stop light
this car would be SO MUCH COOLER with a 4 speed.
When I was in High School in 1975, I had a 72 Gran Torino Sport exactly like the one in the Clint Eastwood movie, 351c 4v, auto. But if I ever win the lottery I'm heading straight to this guy for a S & H tribute Torino.
my first car was a 79 T-bird,but i fixed it up as my "Starsky & Hutch" Car,T-birds had the same parts as a Torino, steering wheel, seats, dash board, bumpers, interior,it was a wide car to,so when i put wide tires and deep dish rims on the back, plus air shocks, man that car was beautiful, got a fire engine red paint job,it was my inspired car,i called it the "HOOPTY BIRD"!
great looking cars that really has that distinct 70s American charm. saw one powered by a roush 588 BBF a while ago, that thing was mindblowing !
I ALWAYS wanted this VEHICLE... One of A KIND
I knew a guy who had one, red, but without the stripe. I worked for him back in the day. I drove it a few times, and it was great power steering.
I have a die cast version of this car as well as many other famous TV and movies cars. Would love to own the real thing one day. Love it!
I took my drivers license test driving my grand dads 74 Gran Torino .
Grand dad? Thanks for making me feel old. I remember when these things were new!
Steve's 76' is equipped with a 460 engine - One of two main screen used 76' Torino's - 2nd thru 4th season. Great vid Chris!
Of course..you would know those specific details!😛
Coolest car ever. This guy is awesome. Oh I have a lot of the same collectables ... but I would love to have the real deal. I give the guy his due... he is the most dedicated S&H fan ever to own the original Torino from the show. Wow. The movie was goofy but I loved that the car(s) were painted with viper red instead of the old ford stock red. Also, they made a slight adjustment to the outside curve of the stripe which matched the body lines just a bit better. I'd be giddy driving that car around. Childhood dream. Too cool.
I love this Car. ! I have a Clone from 76 er Ford Gran Torino "Starsky & Hutch". Best regards from Germany
Id love to own one or even get a chance to drive one! Love Starsky and Hutch as well and this car got me also loving my Ford's even more so.
I had a friend in Australia which owns one of these cars ,he got it from a Nascar driver. Beautiful machine 🙂
Perfect stance and everything on the car is Spot On! Kudo's 👍
There was one of those cars in the first episode of the Dukes of Hazzard, one arm bandits in 1979! Once again your videos are great! Really top notch!
